It worked fine for me. I wasn’t going for looks though becuase it’s a work truck I was just trying to prevent the salt on the roads from slowly making my truck disintegrate
You did an awesome job Auto Picasso! Even the best make an error every now then, You were multitasking painting & teaching!!! Keep bringing the knowledge👍🤓👍
there's lots and lots of undercoats just depends on how you want to tackle the job at hand etc..... is it your car or are you working for a car dealer etc....
How has that stood up to the test of time? Because I find that if I just use primers it only last about AT MOST 3 years before I see the rust eating through the paint again. And this could be something like the top of a trunk lid
+Toni Starks Thanks for checking us out! We're always looking to add more types of videos to our channel, so we'll keep this recommendation in mind! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
Thanks for the video! I’m going to tackle this myself after watching this. I did see another clip where the guy folded the tape over n itself to create a soft edge which looks like it might work well
I need to do this with my 2012 Ram 1500. Right rear quarter panel is rusting behind the paint between the bumper and the fender well. I'm gonna have to remove my rear bumper to get behind it tho. I plan to apply black rhino liner under the body line on both sides of the truck front to back to help protect it from future salt and chip damage
when a mechanic does autobody work.... lol good video to mitigate a small problem turning into a big one. Lol i got to tell my self allot of times, it dosnt matter if its far from good, as long as it looks good from far LOL. Ive used rattle can a few times and I know where all the issues are, but hardly anyone else ever picks up on it. lol
not to bad at all, i have a similar project i do have the professional guns tools etc... but don't feel like taking them out, just want to make it look ok to good, llike you say its not a 100,000 dollar vehicle, again nice video.
I know this is an old video, but I was always told to go in circles and keep moving when hand sanding, but you went in straight lines, so does it not matter wether circles or straight ?
+Will4May Thanks for watching! The main thing is to have the sand paper on something flat, not just your fingers. We use a sponge in this case, bit if you have a block that will work as well!
what about the backside of those panels which are surely rusted worse than the outside? What is missing is how to treat the inside as well as the outside because the cosmetic fix is not going to last long at all.......I would suggest unbolting the fender and treating the rust with phosphoric acid ( Naval Jelly) and repainting it with some really good frame paint to prevent recurrence.
That’s true once rust starts it’s because it’s already on the Inside think of it as a Cancer on metal. That repair will rust out again from the inside. This is a patch job
So looking into die grinders so I can begin on some smaller areas on a resto project but what about for large panels? Previous owner replaced the fender but never treated it so it is covered with surface rust. I do not no much about die grinders but it seems it would take forever to do an entire panel with such a small tool. What's the alternative?
Electric and pneumatic orbital sanders are available, for reasonable cost, from all the home centers with disc size up to 6 inches. Usually for wood working, but also excellent for body filler on larger areas. I've even used a belt sander for rough work on large panels. Final finishing of large panels are best done by hand with a long leveling block.
I didn't have any power tools i bought a 66 impala, i hand rubbed the entire body with compound after i was done i gave it three coats of wax the dude that sold the car walked up to the car and said i had a car the same year but it wasn't as nice as this one!!!

Nice job! I was not expecting the paint to blend as nice as it did. Thank you for sharing
It's amazing how easy it looks when this guy does the repair & painting.
Darn, it's not so easy when I do that myself.😁

I would've made that car look like a local gang graffiti job lmao😆
Just be patient.

Awesome job. I am going to apply this awesome knowledge to my 2015 Ford Escape doors that are rusting. Thanks for sharing.
+Adam Muise Thanks for checking us out!
Great video for basic repairs thanks for sharing your knowledge
I've been doing body work and painting for over 40 years. Anytime I grind out rust I apply zinc chromate as the first coat.

Great work, thanks for showing us how to fix the drip 😊
Well done brother! You did a great job!
Do you have any thoughts on rust converting paints and coatings?
Thanks for the video! I’m going to tackle this myself after watching this. I did see another clip where the guy folded the tape over n itself to create a soft edge which looks like it might work well
Awesome.. try doing a video for primer.. my car is gray and I have a spot where it looks like a clear layer is peeling off
Great video, I'm just about to try this myself so wish me luck!
good video and gives examples how to fix our mistakes as a beginer painter
You guys know your stuff! Love your videos
Great content, thanks for the info. Thought I'd mention: volume diff between intro/brand and rest of vid is a bit deafening

What do you think about using a rust converter before the primer? I have some areas on my old truck that are difficult to get the rust off by sanding.
1AAauto. Really good videos.Great on part's to. Thanks from Norway. Yngve
Hey man. Could this knowledge also be applied if you were going to do a repair on the underside of your car? What else would you need to do.
Can I use an oscillating tool with a sander attachment or I have to use a grinder at the beginning? Can you post a link to a similar grinder you used?
Could you have use a rust converter for the small remaining rust? and paint?
Nice job 👍🏻 I have a white 1985 mercury Marquis where can I find the paint? Thanks
Would a rust inhibitor before priming be an extra preventative to deal with rust in the future?
15:23. You can clearly see line. If it looks bad from here, it must look bad irl too.
Putting the can in warm water is a good idea 💡
Good video. It confirmed what I thought I was supposed to do. Now to cock it up in practice lol...
when exactly do you need to bondo/putty ? when you have some crazy hole etc ?
Hello what grit was used in the begining to sand it to metal? And wich grit did u use for preping? Im new to this. Thanks for the video by the way
80 grit to prep up to 220 and prime then sand prime with 400 or 600 than paint !
Good video, Thanks for sharing.

He had it ground to bare metal what other rust do u mean?
Good video. What grit did you use to wet sand the primer? Also was that a direct to metal etch primer?
I'm gonna guess 60grain then 80grain.
Minimum 220. I use 220 for primer then 400 for paint
Nice Job
+Norman Snead Thanks for checking us out. 1aauto.com
Could you use Ospho also to make sure you kill all the rust? Asking for a friend.
Thats going to rust. Epoxy primer over the bare metal is the only way to truly seal it.
Awesome vid. I appreciate the mistake and the correction of the mistake.
+Briggs Guy Thanks for checking us out!
My 96 Chevy has rust holes in the cab corners and the lower driver's fender I had to seal it with Rust-Oleum till I get the money to fix it
What clear coat did you use?
This is fantastic
Thank you
That is a Cerato 2007-2009 head light that man was holding right?
+Muhsin Ali We unfortunately do not have the exact part he was holding at the end of the video.
What about the rust specs, you have to kill the rust specks
Thanks!
The local auto body shop told me rust comes from the inside of a panel, and can't be fixed without removing and replacing the panel. True?
That’s true once rust starts it’s because it’s already on the Inside think of it as a Cancer on metal. That repair will rust out again from the inside. This is a patch job
What brand die grinder is that?
Nice!
What was the first wheel you used

What kind of alcohol did you use ?
Anything stronger than beer.
What was the reason for warning up the paint?
It thins it, less orange peel.
What is that sander?
Seems legit. I'd send it on my daily.
How do u know what paint to buy?
Should be a paint code somewhere under the hood or in the door frame of the car
What grit are you starting with.
+randy Thanks for watching! We started with 80 grit.
I didn't have any power tools i bought a 66 impala, i hand rubbed the entire body with compound after i was done i gave it three coats of wax the dude that sold the car walked up to the car and said i had a car the same year but it wasn't as nice as this one!!!
You should've mentioned what grit you're using.
+KLOnTheTrack Thanks for the feedback!
how long is.a little bit
Die grinder like that is far better to use than sandblasting in this case. Who wrote this script?
You should have used Filler first .
Repair manual heating cable
Need acids to clean the pores.
Tip: Mute audio and play a 2x speed. You're welcome.
@15:04 cut the video! bring in the other car with no rust for the finished product.
Bro looks fried 😂😂😂
👌
What vehicle was he working on?
Watch the video....
Might be rusting from the INSIDE, if so, will rust through your repair.
Lots of plastic and tape... I found out
Bad color match
Lol a Chevy suburban rusted after 10 years... Buy cheap, buy American
Bad taping
