I think did the best he could, in a very compromising, embarrassing situation. The fucked up part was that it didn't matter how sincere his apology was nor his ignorance over the "power dynamic" of the situation. Men and women both have to be comfortable talking about these things openly, and not just ratting someone out to the media after the fact. I think that's what was really fucked up...is his own friends wouldn't let him make it right. People he had worked with. They simply turned their backs, very disloyal and graceless.
