  • At 5.20pm yesterday afternoon, 04 November, emergency services were contacted and a large scale search was launched after a swimmer went missing on Bondi Beach.
Two Japanese nationals entered the water on Bondi Beach for a swim, however alarms were raised when they began to struggle in very heavy surf.
Bondi Lifeguards managed to rescue one of the men, however the other 22-year-old male disappeared and drowned.
Assistance was called in from both the Westpac Lifesaver 1 helicopter and NSW Ambulance MRU Rescue Helicopter, however neither aerial patrols could find the missing man in the heavy waves.
NSW Water Police & Surf Life Saving NSW also attended and assisted.

Despite the efforts of lifeguards and frantic searches by Jet Ski patrols, the male was never found.
At 7.30am today the search resumed using the same resources.
Drownings are a very rare event at Bondi Beach, however very heavy surf conditions were likely a major contributing factor to yesterday's loss of life.
The man's belonging were secured by NSW Police and his friend is assisting police with the investigation.

It's sad to say that for him would be search and recovery instead of search and rescue. I don't think there is any possible way he would've serviced. I can't imagine what his loved ones went through.

Sadly, he did drown, and was found a week later 3 miles from Bondi.

I believe this one appears in one of the episodes of Bondi Rescue, that's looks like Azza out on the Jetski. Also Deano and Harries on Jetski. Maxi, Lionel, yes recognize the lot of them. Bondi Rescue episode, can't remember which season though.

It seems like Asians are always getting rescued, maybe it's because they don't visit the ocean so don't know how to handle it, also people from India, Mongolia, etc. NEVER underestimate the ocean, it is far more powerful than most people can even imagine!

It's because of the language barrier. If they knew English, they would know the risks.

If only they could get some basic swimming lessons and swim between the flags...

Its human nature to assume that they already know the risks just because they’ve seen others do it or have been to other beaches before. Same with white folks who always assume they can take on the Himalayas just because they’ve seen others do it or they have climbed other mountains. A lot end up dying or need rescuing by sherpas. There’s just no reality show about it so you don’t know.

A body was found near North Head, (6km away) 5 days later. I'm of the belief it was in relation to this incident.

Rip current probably pulled the person way out there or a shark got the person. Sad either way.

Rip current took him, the female friend was rescued but he got pulled away and it became hard to rescue him, they found him about a week later about 3 miles away I think. I don't believe a shark was ever mentioned, but he did drown.
