As a Red Sox fan, what John Fisher is doing to A's fans is starting to smell like collusion to sell the team in Vegas. The league needs to wakeup and realize this guy is terrible for baseball.

As a Yanks fan, it is hard for me to admit this. I completely agree with you. Haha. In all seriousness, MLB is protecting the rich to the expense of the ones who would actually make them money seems off to me.
The A's TV deal is $67mil per year. They were paying Oakland $1.5mil per year for playing in the coliseum. Have you ever been to the Coliseum? I haven't been there in over 20 years and it was crap back then, it hasn't gotten better with age. The city of Oakland met with the A's this past week and offered a $97mil fee to continue to play there. It's for 5 years, but if the A's leave sooner, the $97mil is not refundable.
"The city’s chief of staff Leigh Hanson is helping lead the charge." "To remain in the Coliseum, Oakland is charging the Athletics a $97 million extension fee. Hanson noted that it is non-negotiable and will help settle Oakland’s $170 million general funds deficit. That number will be the biggest sticking point in communications."
They basically want half the review from the TV deal to pay off debt for a poorly managed city. The A's haven't averaged more than 10k per game in 3 years. When they had back to back 95 win seasons in 2018/2019 they barely averaged 20k. Sacramento will fill 14k per game.
They had a stadium plan to build at the Howard Terminal, but Oakland wanted a $12billion dollar project to finance a citywide wishlist. It's a poorly run city, it has been for decades, and there's a reason why the Raiders, Warriors and A's have all left. Everyone is blaming ownership and ignoring the City of Oakland's history of failing to get anything down.
Major league baseball owners are imposing a tax on Fisher to keep him from moving then selling the team, and it will stay in place for 10 years..pro-rated to lessen as time passes.
Oakland to Sacramento is a good two hours one way. Nobody is driving 4 hours round-trip to an A's game.

DEMONIZING Fisher didn't win any brownie points with MLB, never mind whether he earned it. That $97 million three or five year lease extension didn't conjure out of thin air, it is exactly the amount the city fell SHORT funding city infrastructure for Howard Terminal. Yes, MLB noticed the spite! Any GOOD landlord would offer IMPROVEMENTS to get a tenant to sign a new lease, notice Oakland DID NOT... Oakland actually had the nerve to ask Fisher to guarantee MLB actions, something he is unable to fulfill. As Willie Wonka said, you LOSE...

@@ronclark9724 You have no clue about Fisher trying play Oakland by engaging in sham negotiations over a lease extension when Fisher never had any intention of extending the lease in Oakland. Fisher wanted to try to humiliate Oakland by trying to get the city to grovel to keep the team in Oakland for 3 more years and then reject Oakland again after he got the city to grovel. However, Oakland officials read Fisher (which you have not) and knew he was trying to play them in this sham negotiation. So, the city ended up playing Fisher by putting forth an aggressive extension proposal, which was leaked to send the message to the public that the city didn’t have its tail between its legs, and got the A’s to come back for a follow up meeting to hear the city’s “revised” proposal, which was obviously not materially a change.
As for the $97M difference in offsite infrastructure funding between Oakland and the A’s for Howard Terminal, that difference was based upon the A’s moving the target from their original $350M ask. At the time the A’s walked away, Oakland had obtained $400M in state & federal infrastructure grants with additional grant applications pending ($475M in infrastructure grants for offsite infrastructure were obtained). Oakland had also agreed to $500M in tax increment financing (bonds) to reimburse the A’s for on-site infrastructure costs. Keep in mind that Howard Terminal was a $12B mixed-use project with Oakland agreeing to $900M in funding at the time the A’s walked away, which would have increased to almost $1B based upon grants received after the A’s walked. Yet, the A’s have spun this as a $97M difference blamed on Oakland. There is no mention of the $115M difference between the A’s original ask of funding with the Nevada legislature and the $385M they received. The $115M difference with the Nevada deal was significantly gteayet given that the total scope is a $1.5B stadium-only deal vs. the $12B Howard Terminal project with a stadium, 3,000 residential units, 1.5M sf of commercial space, a 200-room hotel & 1,500-seat performance theater. Even if there was a true $97M difference, that is not a difference that would kill a $12B project. What killed Howard Terminal is the same issue stalling the Vegas deal, which is Fisher’s inability to land the financing.

My first game at the Coliseum was as a kid in 68 who had parents whose first date was a game at Shibe in 48. I coached my kids from T-ball through High School and have Umped over two hundred games. I took my kids to Spring Training from Alaska for 10 years back in their ball playing years. After this year I’ll be done with Baseball. And I’ll be done with all sports because Baseball was all I had left.
As a Phillies fan I feel so bad for Oakland and their fans.This is horrible and Fisher is responsible for all this mess.

Sacramento has plans to build a new stadium in the Railyards adjacent to downtown. The infrastructure is already in place, unlike the Howard Terminal site. Watch, Fisher will sell the team to Vivek Ranadive and Arctos Sports.

In regard to the Kings - it got close enough that I know I went to at least one Kings game thinking that I wanted to see them before they left. I'm sure you can find on RUclips a very emotional sign off at the end of one season by then-announcers Grant Napier and Jerry Reynolds. I forget what year that was, but the team was pretty much sold and ready to move to Seattle. It was VERY close.
Hopefully, the A's make the World Series while in Sacramento. A World Series in a minor-league ballpark. That would be awesome.
Actually anyone who goes to an A's game in Sacramento is going to have a far better experience than that airport called "the Coliseum" where you need a telescope to see the field. The current design phase of BB stadiums is smaller with the people viewing closer. The Coliseum is a dinosaur that should have been torn down 20 years ago.
There's no way they're going to let a World Series be played in a 14,000-seat stadium. If they do make the postseason, they'll end up either playing games in SF or...well, back in Oakland.
Can we just go to a premier league style. demote teams like Oakland and promote teams that’s care to try and win.
This is much deeper than just a team not trying to win, this is an owner sabotaging his own franchise and the fanbase in turn.

Multiple reasons, but most of all it's because its a dumb reactionary take.
If the English Premier League rules were adopted during Fishers tenure we'd have lost The: Astros, Rockies, Diamondbacks, Pirates, Nationals, Orioles, Rangers, Marlins, Tigers, White Sox, Phillies, Giants, Twins, Padres, Ray's, Braves, Reds, Cubs, Mariners and Padres. All before we lost the Athletics. Over half the league gone for some AAA teams most of whom couldn't afford to put together a competitive MLB team either.
If you ever manage to pull your brain cells together. Maybe ask yourself why suddenly all the money was pulled out of the Rosters. Is there maybe possibly some big expensive project that requires hundred of millions of dollars?
@@louiscypher4186 No. The most expensive contract in A's history is Eric Chavez back in '04. Anytime they HAD to spend money on a player was usually through arbitration. That's why they have had regular 8 year boom-bust cycles since Fisher owned them.

The first time the A's were in the bottom 3 was in 2022. Prior 2022 the only time Oakland was in the EPL relegation zone was 2015.
The reality is the team has drifted between the playoffs and mid table year in year out.
The A's have never been big spenders under Fisher. But trying to portray them as a team that doesn't try and spends an extraordinary amount of time in the EPL relegation zone is nonsense.
To pretend that the last 3 years is indicative of the A's under Fisher is a falsehood and you know it.
Once all the stadium stuff is sorted they will return to what they were a mid table team who occasionally shines in the playoffs. Everyone knows this, no one expects a dynasty with Fisher at the helm.

It only holds 14,000. They're doing new lights and locker rooms. Problem I see is parking, they had a huge parking lot and they built apartments there and it cut parking about 60%. I used to drive to Oakland from Sacramento all the time. We have a lot of people in surrounding cities.

It’s not an hour a way it’s more like one and a half hour away and with traffic could be 2-3 hours away. I live in Sacramento and I’m stoked. I get to see my Yankees when they come to town. And get to see other teams more often.

A few days ago the Sacramento Rivercats drew 4,904 for a game. Some of the things we are hearing in town is the clubhouse upgrades are coming. Vivek is most likely to pay for a lot of it since he owns the cats, and we know fisher isn’t gonna pay for anything.

Sacramento is a baseball town. We are more baseball than basketball and the Kings have sold out seats or close to it almost every game. We have nice weather for night games as well

I think it is more of understanding the hypocrisy that Vivek showed by "saving" the Kings but helping to steal another team from their community. I love baseball, participate in Sac baseball, and will do everything I can to save Oakland baseball.

I understand they will not be using Rivercats stadium.which is called Hughes Stadium and seats 20,000 +. Will using Sutter Health Park, which seats 14,000 counting outfield grass
I don't know if the River Cats ever played in Hughes Stadium (part of Sac City College), which is a football/track n field stadium but the River Cats play at Sutter Health. There is a baseball stadium at SCC and the River Cats may have played there at some point.

@@tolumnia The Sacramento Solons played in Hughes Stadium from 1974-1976. They made some changes to the field for 1975 and 1976 - but in 1974, the dimensions were 300 feet to RF, 390 to dead center, and 233 to LF.
The Solons hit 305 home runs that season - 250 at home. The Spokane Indians finished second in the PCL in team homers. They hit 178. Visiting teams to Sacramento hit 241 homers, so there were a total of 491 home runs in 72 games...6.8 homers per game.

That ballpark is perfect for the A's. It seats around 10k and not a lot of A's fans attend the games anyway. It'll be for a couple seasons anyway just till the stadium in Vegas is built

As someone that lived in St Louis when Stan Kroenke moved the Rams to LA, most of the Oakland fans will hate the MLB. Maybe years down the lime they'll become giants fans, but most will just hate this league and hate the A's.

Everybody complains about Fisher, but nobody has an alternate plan. The city and the mayor couldn't come up with their share of the deal, which was the infrastructure money. If they would have, the As would have stayed in Oakland. Sometimes you get what you vote for.

I got the solution to the A's dilemma on where the team should play next year: The A's should move back to Philadelphia. After that, the Dodgers should move back to Brooklyn, the Giants should move back to New York, the Orioles should relocate to St. Louis (the MLB does need the Browns), and the Braves should start next season in Boston. The MLB should stop showing contempt for hometown fans.
LOL i want to lower ave attendance so far in 2024 with Cle and Boston in town. opening day 13,500. Average next six games. Almost 4600 a game.

Im not going to sac to watch A's and i drive regularly to Oakland to watch ill spend the night catch 2 maybe 3 games a month some twice a month and its the same time frame to drive to sac

It all comes down to who really runs the MLB. The last 2 commissioners were in the pocket of Jerry Reinsdorf. Selig was his best friend and Manfred was hired by him to be the lawyer for the owners during the '94 strike. The 2 owners he has said he gets along with best are Fisher and Nutting, the Pirates owner. He tried to block Cohen from buying the Mets because he doesn't want owners that spend to set a trend. He successfully lead the charge in blocking Mark Cuban from owning a team for that reason. Once Reinsdorf kicks the bucket, the MLB hopefully will be a lot better place.
You know what destroyed baseball Free Agency,,,It made it that teams like Yankees,Dodgers could go out and throw millions of dollars and buy players that were stars in small market teams...a few small market teams have challenged these teams. I am old enough to remember before free agency that every major league teams had at at least one super star hitter and pitcher. My pirates of the early 70's had their first 6 hitters in their lineup all batting over .300 - Stennett, Clines, Clemente, Stargell, Sanguillen and Cash. Oliver, who had a .303 career average...You had the Mets in 1969 who had great pitchers like Seaver, Koosman, Craig Gentry and Nolan Ryan ,,can you imagine the payroll what a team in todays market would have to pay to keep a team like that together,,,Lets not forget the Bg Red Machine and great pitching staffs of the Orioles and A's..
I doubt the "15 owners who are trying" would really want the other 15 to be like them and drive up free agency exponentially. If there was just a salary cap to put certainty on expenses along with a minimum to keep owners like Fisher away from the sport, I think things would be a little happier in labor relations. I'm not even entirely sure MLB wants this. They want New York and Los Angles as their crown jewel franchises, who are allowed to spend whatever to seriously compete for a World Series.

About 10 years ago I went to the Sacramento triple A Team games and found the stadium to be charming but SMALL FOR A MAJOR LEAGUE TEAM. I wonder if they will add more seats? Crazy.
Sacramento is not an hour away from Oakland…
When the traffic is good, it is. I know that's rare - but my house in Sacramento is 93 miles from the stadium. If the roads are clear, you can do most of that drive at about 80 mph and be there in about an hour and 15.

1) A Missouri Senator threatened baseball's antitrust exemption in the late 60s; that gave them the Royals in '69 after the A's left for Oakland.
I believe congressmen in D.C. in 1960 were upset that the Senators were moving. They might've put pressure on the AL to include a Washington team for expansion in 1961.
So if California's Congressional Delegation makes a lot of noise, it can make MLB do something.
2) They could go the St. Louis v NFL route and sue MLB for hundreds of millions of dollars.

Sacramento is a better place to live than other areas in the US. I’m a realtor in Carmichael and there are plenty of beautiful neighborhoods around West Sacramento and the surrounding areas. The park needs updating because it doesn’t have the seating capacity or the amenities other MLB teams but Sacramento will find a way. Fans will come out to support the A’s. We are true fans.
The stadium was built to be expandable to major league capacity. Sacramento is a growing market. A large TV market. The fans will come and pack the stadium. This is our chance.

The A's are going to have a lot more demand for tickets in Sacramento than in Oakland. I live in Sac, and this town has a huge pent up demand for professional sports. In fact, this is really a test run for getting the MLB expansion team. The park is going to sell out for every game (at least in year 1). There are already plans to upgrade the locker room facilities and amenities to make for a great experience for players and fans. At the same time, probably not much they can do to make the stadium bigger, which means it is going to be the most intimate mlb experience and ballpark in the league. I can see die hard visiting fans traveling to Sac to see a regular season game in a spring season type environment. The A's players are moving to a much more affordable city, with less traffic, and a fan base that will just adore having them here.This really sucks for Oakland and I feel for the fans and the city (especially after losing the Warriors and Raiders most recently). But for the players, general fans of MLB, and Sacramento this is great news.

We need a new league. A league based on the community-based franchising model, a la the Green Bay Packers, Saskatchewan Roughriders, et al. This horseracing model with the crowd from the polo club is, and always has been an extortion racket. We need to redefine what exactly "ownership" of a sports franchise is. "Owners" are merely people who buy a license or franchise to collect money in a certain territory. The fans pay for everything! They are the reason the players get paid, the stadia get built and maintained, that ultra high-priced merch gets sold, that (the once lucrative) TV contracts get signed, and who buy those warm $12 beers and cold $7 hotdogs. Otherwise, that franchise agreement is just a piece of paper. The fan is the organism that gives life to the leech that is pro sports...The larcenous braintrust at MLB has not only lost sight of that dynamic, but they are using teams as hostages. Oakland is just the first of many fires that MLB itself has lit. Tampa is still a mess. KCMO coming up to bat with the negative vote. Milwaukee threatened for repair money. CWS, Anaheim - God, even Baltimore has gotten whispers!...So to come full circle with my argument, we need a league that the fans own, finance, and support at whatever level they are inspired to. A league with a constitution that says it is the fan/owners' choice to sell, move, or disband a team, that fans either directly or indirectly benefit from their investment. Salary caps, revenue sharing (not MLB Welfare) which helps the other leagues stay reasonably healthy. Oakland may be the start of that...Stay tuned...Go Ballers!...
I do feel for the A's fans, but that doesn't necessarily mean I'm a bleeding heart. I am not thrilled that Sac is willing to facilitate a team that's abandoning their fans, but I think it's more nuanced than that. I do think this is good for the city's economy even if just for the short term, and I am a believer that this may be a good test for a future Sac team, even though I've heard the very valid argument that it wouldn't be. I could see it going either way. And lastly, though it's sad, Sacramento is a far better destination than Oakland without question, should things fall through in Las Vegas. Oakland has far bigger issues to fix in their city besides keeping the A's.
Hypocritical? Maybe a little, but I think the circumstances for the A's are different from that of the Kings last decade to where I don't feel that bothered by it no matter how anyone says I should feel. Crucify me, I don't care.

Everyone is whining because John Fisher himself said fans in Sacramento would be excited to see Aaron Judge play there (as opposed to Zach Gelof or Ruiz). A relatively competent owner with a relatively competent team would easily get 20k into the Coliseum.

So, where have the fans been? I have been watching the As longer than these commenters have been alive and the fans have rarely shown up! This goes back to 1968. When they win they do OK but when they are average or below average the fans never go to the games. Face it, Bay Area fans are entitled and think they deserve the team without supporting them. Bay Area fans and that includes Sacramento suck. They cant get their friends and family to go and I dont think many of the complainers go wither.
I’m sorry but you can’t justify a team that gets out sold by its minor league team. Glad for the sport they are moving. Rays n Marlins next please. There are better markets plain n simple.
Great for fans in the Valley. It’s 3-6 hours to drive to SF and LA. Now is 1-2 hours and we have a pro ball club. Sucks for OAK but it’s a trash city and violent, I’m sorry it’s true. This is safer for us.
