  • Travelling to Lake Atitlan on public transport (aka a chicken bus) was chaotic, but surprisingly easy and VERY cheap!
    We ended up taking three different chicken buses AND a ferry because that was the safest and quickest way to get to Lake Atitlan. It also turned out to be a fun experience. The locals helped every time we got lost, which was a lot. Not to mention a stunning bus journey along windy, mountain roads and a scenic ferry ride across one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. All this for only 64 GTQ pp! So, here’s how to get to Lake Atitlan, Guatemala via chicken bus, a cheap and perfectly safe way to travel!

    Very nice! I am thinking of going to Guatemala and I want to go to Lake Atitlan. I wonder about going by chicken bus, this gives me a good idea of what to expect. If you travel in Guatemala, you have to have a spirit of adventure!

    There is a direct bus from Xela that goes to San Pedro, along the way it stops in San marcos and San Juan. Leaves early until the late afternoon. I take the 11am or 1pm most the time. No need to pay extra for the lancha/boat or connections.

      Yes we know, but our government website says that road isn’t safe. So far Guatemala has felt very safe to us, but we thought it was best to listen to our government’s advice 🙂 plus, the ferry ride was so beautiful!

      @@izzieanddale your government website must be way more thorough than the states. haha. I've never heard of any issues on that road in the past 5 years. To each their own. Glad you arrived safe. I hate switching all those buses, and the lancha in the late afternoon can be super bouncy -fear of water... Too bad you didn't spend more time in Xela. Oldest church in central America, hot springs, tallest peak/volcano. Not the easiest place to discover, but lots to offer. Cheers! Have a wonderful time in Guate.

      We’d have liked to explore Xela, but we have 90 days to get ourselves to Costa Rica (visa restrictions) so we have to be picky! And thank you 😊

    So is there a currency exchange at the airport, or should I get money from my bank here in USA before I go?

    • @izzieanddale
      @izzieanddale  2 года назад +1

      We didn’t actually fly into Guatemala. But there were loads of currency exchanges at the border crossing and in the main tourist areas throughout. I would expect you can exchange when you land 🙂
