    Your message about respect at the end is exactly why I follow you on RUclips - you bring us great travel adventures, but always with respect for history, culture, environment and your fellow humans. I have traveled a few times in Mexico and Central America with Intrepid Tours, and if you're looking for small group tours that have this same respectful attitude, check them out.

    Lake Atitlan is a very beautiful lake. Mountain lakes are especially beautiful. Atitlan is about 5000 feet in elevation. I would often visit the very beautiful Lake Dillon in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado (elevation 9000 feet). Lake Tahoe (6000 feet) in the Sierra Nevada Mountains was also very beautiful to visit. And, the extremely clear water of Lake Tahoe that allowed you to look very deep into the water was truly remarkable and magical.

    I was in Panajachel few months ago and I stayed in this hotel "Hotel y Centro de Convenciones Jardins del Lago" It has a beautiful view to the lake and the food is delicious. I recommend this place if you are going with your family and have small kids. They will love it. The best part of staying in this hotel is that restaurant is in open space and the view to beautiful lake is breath-taking. If you are planning to Visit Guatemala, I recommend to go during summer time that starts from November to Abril. The hottest months are March and April. So make sure bring sunscream.

    Ha! I was in Guatemala a month ago and we went to Panajachel and San Juan. I saw that same picture of the beer drinker with a mask. My uncle really wanted to buy it. And the weaving demo was really cool. If my parents were up for more activity, I would have done so much more.
    There’s also a major effort in the country to clean up the lake. There’s a lot of trash that was left in the lake and the people are concerned about restoring it to what it used to be.

Good to know San Marcos would had been a good option for that. And for sure will try jump cliff next time. Also huge respect for what you said at the end, what do we give back to the community is true, if not giving at least do not harm or take to the detriment of the same.

    I visited Lake Atitlan in 2008. I wasn't even aware that it was the "party town" as you describe it. Perhaps we were in a quieter part of the town. We stayed in Hotel Mikaso, which was simple, but a very nice experience. I think it has changed owners since I was there. We did a bit of hiking and horseback-riding in the area. One word of caution is that the lake was not very clean when we were there. There was a lot of garbage like empty water bottles, etc. along the shore. My travel companion went swimming in the lake and got ill afterward.

    • @TheNewTravel
      @TheNewTravel  2 года назад +9

      Thankfully, the Lake appeared very clean on my visits. Though what I heard from a Guatemalan is that another lake called Lake Amatitlán (not to be confused with Atitlan) used to be the favourite spot vacationers 50 years ago... however it has become quite polluted and can no longer be safely swam in. So Atitlan has become the new popular spot. That's why I hope people can treat these beautiful lakes with respect... if we don't, they disappear :(

    Como guatemalteco desearia que se contruyera casas de dos o tres niveles como las que hay en Estado Unidos o Europa y que tenga un solo diseño y quitar muchas casas que estan cubiertas de laminas de la gente que es pobre y se le construyera una casa seria ideal, y los caminos que hay alli pavimentarlos y hacer hoteles verticales en donde se pueda y ampliar algunos muelles y poner mas barcos mas grandes para hacer tours con servicio de comida y bebida, hay muchos detalles de ese lugar para arreglar y hacer mas atractivo para los turistas o que los que viven alli aporten con sus ideas como mejorar para que el turismo se incremente asi como la cantidad que va para antigua guatemala.

Es necesario apostarle a la seguridad de toda el área y por último la infraestructura de las carreteras super urgente trabajarlas.
