2 Basic BJJ Chokes that Are Effective in Competition or a Fight

  • What submissions can you use in a BJJ competition or a street fight or self defense situation? This is the question for today's video.
The question comes from our buddy Bart who is curious about what kind of submissions cross over from the competition realm in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu to a street fight.
In this video I start by sharing that if I am going to use a submission on the street. I'm going to focus on chokes instead of joint locks.
This is a two fold function. 1 most people don't know what grappling is or what they should be feeling with joint locks. And if the person is really aggressive. The joint lock may not work as effectively as desired. Especially if they are are on some sort of drug.
The 2nd reason is, it lets me finish the fight without doing a lot of damage to the person so I can move on with what I was doing. For me, self-defense is about defending myself and not about dishing out excessive amounts of harm to another human.
Another side aspect of a fight situation that I didn't mention is that most often I will do my best just to control the situation using position.
If it's a situation involving a 1 on 1 fight (which isn't always), I will focus my attention on controlling the person till authorities can take it from there.
    Back to the video!
In this video I show a standing rear naked choke and a standing guillotine choke. Both of which I have seen work in either my personal experience or the experiences of others in the street and/or mma.
If you watch this video understand that I'm speaking about a very specific situation. Street fights where rules are not recognized present too many variables.
The goal of a fight situation should be to avoid and get out of the situation if at all possible.
    Hope you enjoyed the video!

    Hey Chewy 2 questions:
    1. Ben Askren ( Olympic Wrestler and Bellator MMA champ) went on joe rogan podcast and talked a little bit about why he dislikes the way BJJ schools teach the way they do and how there should be changes made. There's like a 10 minute video on youtube of that part of their discussion. I know you come from a wrestling background what are your thoughts on Ben Askren's rant on how BJJ is taught or your personal criticism of the traditional method of teaching bJJ.
    2. I was thinking about this the other day. When it comes to motivation the belt system provides an extrinsic form of motivation as opposed to an intrinsic form of motivation. Do you really feel like the belt system is necessary? I guess it provides extra motivation to come to class more often in order to get the new belt or stripe, but at the same time that shouldn't be what your focus should be on.
    3. This is a technical question. I keep getting caught in Guillotines from particular ppl that are good at catching ppl in guillotines from very stange positions. Is there a general rule or tips you can give to avoid getting caught or being susceptible to guillotines?
    p.s

that guillotine counter for the chode-double leg is great. Used it in a bar fight where the guy just went for that sloppy double, arm around his neck and went down in closed guard guillotine. Didn't really choke him unconscious, but left him in a sort of hangover state. Bet he learnt the lesson. Great video.

Distance is very important but you should really keep your hands off the other person if you are trying to deescalate the situation. Just having your hands up in front of you should be fine and is a better situation to be talking from.
Other than that I completely agree with the choice of a choke in a streetfight as opposed to an armbar or any other snaphappy fun stuff.
Always be careful though! Most people are not alone so watch your six. This is also why choking in a standing position is best for the street.

Really like your videos. a lot of functional training methods and info! I would say however, that now things are changing , and there are more and more people with training(mma, basic bjj etc) that do get into fights, at bars for example. And even criminals with some training. Also I really like the rear naked , in the way you showed it for bringing someone down. I will say though, I have used it in a street situation before(working in a security related job), and as I was putting it on, and the guy was going for a concealed knife and almost got it out, thankfully I was working with a friend who controlled his hands , with basic grips. It worked out well in that situation , but you need to be very mindful how quick that knife can come out(or any weapon). Thanks for all the good videos and content! Awesome channel

This is great. Just a warning, if you're in any doubt the target has any sharps just keep away from him. Don't be a hero. Closing the distance, especially going for a choke just gives them a chance to shank you in the thigh.

I've been doing bjj since I was 2 (27 now) Thai boxing for 7 years and incorporated wrestling to be a complete mma fighter and it takes a lot to get me to fight with a stranger out and about in the world. Always walk away unless they are actively attacking you or a loved one. Not worth it any other way. I see it as not having to sit in jail and having to pay medical bills.

This guy is GREAT. Agree with everything he said. As he said, in a close grapple where you can't choke you're pretty much gonna have to throw: but generally I'd make sure I then go into a front or rear naked choke where I'm mounted so my head isn't close to floor (head kicks) and more importantly, so I can see where other attackers are cos better to disengage than to get them all jump on top of you or head kick you.

The guy had no leverage and no power, no range of motion and my brother could've still went into chokes from there. That doable knee is the worst. Lolol

When doing a guillitean you don’t lean back. You take your forearm and turn it towards you while leaning your shoulder towards him. It might seem weird. But it makes an incredible difference. Try it out yourself safely with your partner.

How to make sure or guarantee that your choke will only result in a nap, instead of death?
I am very afraid of choking someone to death, and thats why i am very hesitant to go for chokes, which, obviously, limits my abilities.
Also, as far as i know, you shouldnt put the guys head gently on the ground and walk away, after choking him out. You need to turn his body on the side, otherwise theres a risk he will swallow his own tongue and suffocate

    • @dard4642
      @dard4642 5 лет назад

Cutting blood to brain for seconds will cause unconsciousness. You release the choke and blood supply returns. Three to five MINUTES of choking blood to the brain can lead to permanent brain damage. Five or more minutes leads to death.
When you see people in a blood choke for a long time, they aren't actually *in* the choke; they're in an attempted choke. Once they go out and you release the choke, they'll wake up in a few seconds. If they've never been choked, they'll almost always ask how long they were out because, when you're out, it doesn't feel like only a few seconds. You would have to hold an unconscious person in a tight choke for five or so minutes to kill them.

I tell you now if you get into Street fight in a even remotely Ghetto area and you start submitting somebody all the bystanders will jump in and either kick your ass or just pull you off and tell you to throw hands or leave. If you want to take the fight to the ground make sure you're just subduing the other guy or rearranging his face with Strikes. For the love of God don't start to choke somebody out cause everybody will turn on you cept your ride or die friends. I've seen it happen several times which is why I always just rearranged someone's face from Top Mount in the 2 street fights I've been in.

    • @Chewjitsu
      @Chewjitsu  6 лет назад +34

Last Defender Of Xhotl I agree with you. I grew up in rough neighborhoods as a kid. When someone’s friend gets beat up. The rest join in.
And I wouldn’t pursue any sort of fight in an area like that. If at all possible you should get out of a fight situation on the street. There are just too many variables and no rules.
Also, I’ll do everything in my power not to find myself just hanging out in a bad area. Situational awareness is paramount.

Great stuff. One that i like is the arm triangle. Slide under the arm and wrap the neck tight and pull them off balance by stepping behind making sure they have multiple issues. Once there off balance, there being choked. And its natural when off balance to try and write yourself. By the time they figured out whats happening there waking up on the ground. Its nice for a few reasons one it allows you to be able to stay standing or go to the ground depending on whatever is best for the situation. You can use that person as a shield for a short time while you gather what's going around you. But the disadvantages are that your already in a bad situation if this person is swinging and it requires a good deal of timing and understanding of this choke on your part and the chance your going to get hit and laid out. If you don't have a chance to stop it though, generally people throw from the right first. you can kinda prepare for that and go in from there. I've only used this once. And I think a good deal of luck was involved with how smoothly it went. But it worked out. The key thing for me was keeping him off balance. Stepping behind him once i had the choke locked. Honestly didn't think about that. He was just a big guy and im thinking he can probably pick me up or something so i stepped behind him to put myself in a better position and it wound up working great

And where I live the ones who will mess with you on the street are probably the type that will stab you, or have a whole pile of scumbag friends and family members who will make your life hell and sometimes you have to swallow your pride and walk away.

chokes are perfect for many street situations but one thing to remember is the lawsuit factor if too many people don´t tell the truth and say that you started it. in the first scenario you actually would have been charged considering you grabbed him first and proceeded to choke him unconscious. during court it would have been known that you were trained and could have done more to avoid what happened.

awesome advice. I'm a Krav Maga instructor so ya, slam them on the ground for sure, but you don't need to be down there with them. throw them down and then stand on their throat or do whatever you need to do, but the ground isn't a nice cushy mat! getting kicked in the head by a buddy can kill you, too.

I haven't seen many street fights but one (and wait until the end) did end up with a takedown and somebody being in the mount position.....
.....sadly for the dude in the mount position (the aggressor), he wasn't a fighter. his opponent (the defender), however, had training and made a series of rapid choices that were super impressive (to me, at least).
    1) He (the defender) was able to size up his opponent instantly and figured 'I'm much taller, odds are I have a much longer reach'. He was right.
    2) He stayed calm and talked while the other dude (the aggressor) had already started a fight with a teen (who was a punk. long story short: no one was in the right or the wrong. all parties were set up by this teen and he didn't have good intentions). So, he knew his opponent was already tired and full of adrenaline.....not controlling his breath, yelling....he knew his opponent would gas out quickly without much pressure.
    3) He knew his opponent wouldn't be able to stay calm and was going to react emotionally...making him easy to bait into a trap.
The aggressor is fighting the teen and the defender, obviously, tells him to stop putting hands on kids. he then invites the aggressor to hit him if he wants to fight somebody. the aggressor yells, takes the bait and starts storming the defender. the defender squared up and left on leg out a bit....then feinted an overhand right. the aggressor immediately took the bait and went for a double leg takedown, but he only got one leg while the defender pulled him down and tried to pull guard, but was still on his back with the aggressor in a low mount.
...the defender, however, employed that reach advantage, held the aggressor's head with on hand and beat the soul out of him with the other. after awhile, dude on top was swinging and hitting the ground while dude on the bott had him by the throat, holding him up, about to knock him out.
.....it worked out in the end but that's one example, albeit anecdotal.

    Hello,
I have just begun BJJ in the U.K.
I've had about 8 sessions. I find my self running out of energy at the end of the 1hr sessions, especially during the sparring at the end. I just don't have any more fight left in me.
Any tips on how to conserve me energy during a fight and increase my stamina?
    Thanks! (great channel btw!)

That's the reason why chokes and leg locks will be so much more efficent than wrist and arm locks. If a guy passes out, he's not gonna keep fighting. If a guy breaks his leg, he can still fight on the ground but not standing up, and he can't follow you.

Us BJJ guys... are all part of a big family! Instant comrades, everywhere I go.
However, my experience with wrestlers is a little bit different? They seem to be a bit more high strung?
Let me put it this way... On several different occasions, I've seen wrestlers start unnecessary fights at parties? But, I've never seen a BJJ guy get aggressive, unless it was completely unavoidable.

There are loads of videos of strikers knocking out up to three or even four people single handed. But I’m with you on everything else, but it’s a huge misconception that once you’re outnumbered your only option is to run as sometimes you don’t have that. Even basic boxing goes a long way

    Good evening Prof.Chewy
Many thanks for yet another GREAT post. You guys ROCK! Or more appropriately ROLL! 🤣
Thanks again for your response to getting back to Jiu Jitsu AFTER a major surgery. Soon it’ll happen.
I know that you’ve said it before, please forgive, I’m not that bright, but WHERE ARE YOU LOCATED AT PLEASE?
There are so many BJJ/GRAPPLING sites online to watch and I’m sure many are great. That said, I truly do enjoy and appreciate the work that you and Prof. Beast put forth. It would be my delight and my privilege to make my way ‘ down south ‘ in the fall/autumn for a little training vacation at your academy.
Thanks again Prof. Chewy & Prof. Beast.

0:45 lol this reminded me of the first time bjj was useful in a street fight for me.
Drunk fight, I was 17, he was 17-20, we went to each other and instantly entered a kind of over-under position. Then I asked if he did bjj and he told me yes, I told him I also did, then he immediately got my back and threw me to the ground. It was a legit bjj-only street fight, it was short tho, I was a white belt and he felt more like a purple belt.
I’m saying bjj was useful for me bc even tho I lasted only like 5 minutes, he never punched me, and he respected the tap (rear naked choke) and didn’t put me to sleep. I really doubt he would have done that if I was just a random jerk asking for a nap (which I prob was) that didn’t know bjj.

I think that another reason why people who train are less likely to get into fights is because you realize from your academy that anyone could be able to fight. There are old people, fat people, or short young women who train where I am who can really fight. Nonetheless, I agree with Chewy that the belligerent, aggressive bipolar types rarely train, otherwise, they would get all that aggression out during their training.

It is important for students of jujitsu to know that a jury of your peers (likely with no understanding of BJJ ) would consider a Rear Naked Choke, or any choke, for that matter, to be a lethal use of force.
In a court of law, it is important to know where a reasonable person draws the line between nonlethal use of force and lethal use of force, and when you can legally use it.
If your opponent is carrying a weapon, and you escalate the flight from non-lethal mutual combat to lethal use of force by attempting a choke of any kind, a jury would likely consider your opponent’s use of his weapon( knife or a gun) to be reasonable under the circumstances.
Lethal use of force also includes BJJ techniques like arm bars, or knee bars or any hold that will likely result in serious injury.
Most states expect you to attempt to retreat from all fights, if you expect to claim self defense. Even in stand your ground states, your self defense must be deemed reasonable and proportionate, before you get to claim self defense. Most jurors would wonder if retreat was possible, why didn’t you use that as a means to end the altercation. Stand your ground or not. Retreat is always deemed reasonable if you can.
If your first defensive technique is lethal use of force and you kill or maime your opponent you WILL go to jail. If your opponent stabs/shoots you while you are choking him will likely go free.
To see how an MMA killer should handle himself, watch Matt Sierra in a restaurant scuffle.

2nd move is great, first move is risky. If you grab and leave your arm there (just for a second) the other guy can pak sau with his left hand (in your demonstration) among other moves, knock you off center and you are in serious trouble.

So... I am not good at this. When you choke someone does he go to sleep or do you make him unconscious?

    • @Rrevolutions
      @Rrevolutions 5 лет назад

Doddo depends, if it’s a windpipe choke, the brain doesn’t get oxygen and can go unconscious but if it’s a blood choke, like a rear naked, it cuts off blood to the brain which also puts someone unconscious. So to answer your question, people go unconscious not to sleep. Going to sleep is a term for knocking someone out weather by a choke or punches.

Another question: Wouldn't he swallow his tongue, then?

    • @Jonesykins
      @Jonesykins 5 лет назад

@@domonkosludvig3314 There is a risk they could swallow their tongue, this is why it is good to stick them in the recovery position.
With that said, even if they do it is not your fault or your problem at the end of the day.
I don't know how it works where you are, but for example over here in the UK we have a thing we sometimes refer to as ''secondary injury as a result of your own actions.''
This comes from a multitude of legal doctrines and case laws but one good example would be a legal doctrine called *Ex turpi causa non oritur actio,* (From a dishonourable cause an action does not arise). That basically means that the plaintiff cannot pursue legal remedy against someone for something that arose from his own illegal act.
_You try to stab me and in defence I break your arm, you cannot sue me for breaking your arm_
