    It takes a special type of arrogance to be in the path of totality in clear weather and not even going out to look up for 3 minutes.

    • @ianlauerastro
      @ianlauerastro  4 месяца назад +1

      Yeah, it's a shame, especially for those who travelled so far only to be plagued by poor weather! I understand not caring, but the folks who actually thought the eclipse is stupid and rooted for the clouds - they definitely have issues in their they refuse to deal with :P

      I would call it ignorance. I think arrogance is to feel offended someone else doesn't share your interests.

    My group travelled to Hot Springs, AR to view the eclipse. When getting ready to leave town the next day, I had a gas station employee tell me, "Nah, I didn't bother to go outside and look at it. I heard it was only going to be 4 minutes long, but bills are 24/7." I felt sad that some people may have missed the opportunity because of the demands of their jobs, especially when I'm sure the entire store was empty during those 4 minutes.

      @@ianlauerastro There's no way to prepare for what a total eclipse actually looks like. Photos and video don't do it justice. It's the sort of thing that you see pictures and think, "Yeah, that's cool, OK" but when you see it in person it's mind-bending. It doesn't look real. It looks like somebody burned a cigarette hole in the sky and the edges are still burning. It's black and it's MUCH BIGGER than you think it's going to be. in the videos everybody has the same reaction when they see it: "OH MY GOD!" They're shocked. If you haven't seen one, there's no way to describe it. There's nothing to compare it to.

    I drove almost 10 hours from South Texas to Russellville, Arkansas with my kids in tow to witness totality. It was the darkest, inkiest black you will ever see. It looked like a 3 dimensional hole in the sky with a ring around it slowly moving... shimmering. The hole moved and grew as the corona spread and we remained mesmerized in awe of what seemed like a portal to another world. Absolutely beautiful. It was epic and those that did not experience 100% totality are truly missing out.

    I was actually in a flat earth group where people were challenging flat earthers with eclipse pictures where half of them were fake. And they got mad at me and told me I didn't know what I was talking about 🤷 when I shared mine to show what it really looks like, I was then told, "oh, so everyone who isn't you don't have real pictures". I honestly would the media wouldn't have hyped up this eclipse so much because it was a pain getting back home this time

    I drove 1,400mi from Montana to Arkansas for the eclipse. My family thinks I'm crazy and wasting time/money for driving that far for a 4min event. Same goes for my coworkers. They just don't understand/care. This was my first time seeing totality in person, and it all worth it for those short few minutes that far from home.
    It's sad seeing people that just don't care, and would rather grind away at work than look up for 4 minutes.

      I can imagine until you've actually seen a full total eclipse most people don't really know how amazing it is. Most people's idea of an eclipse is less than 99% coverage, which honestly isn't that exciting. I saw pictures and video clips of it of course before actually driving up to see it in Northern Vermont earlier this month. I don't know what I really expected but it blew past all my expectations and was probably the most awe inspiring thing I've ever seen in my entire life. I could have tried to see it in 2017 too as it was a similar drive but I kind of just brushed it off as inconvenient at the time. But now after having seen it in 2024, I really wish I had gone out of my way to see it in 2017.

    I ran across this too. The first time I ran across it was a few weeks ago with an acquaintance. But then I remembered they don't seem to care about sunsets, or nature in general, so... I wasn't surprised that they were ambivalent about the eclipse.

    It’s too bad that there are people who don’t care and find it annoying that the eclipse is happening. That’s their loss, not yours. Some people can’t appreciate beauty, and they never marvel at anything extraordinary. They are trapped in their own mundane existence. With their ignorance often comes fear. You literally can’t convince them to open their eyes, and that’s not your problem.
    The Voltmer photo of the 2017 eclipse was not a single image but required advanced digital processing of multiple images. No one image can duplicate what your eyes actually see during totality.

    I watched the one 2017 & Was flabbergasted when it reached totality ! Pictures did it No justice. I couldn't wait seven years hardly to see the next one. It was such an amazing experience for me. I read the only one in ten thousand people have ever seen a total solar eclipse in their lifetime period and I was about to see two! I was asked by a couple people to go to various places to go watch It.And I declined because I was not going to risk getting stuck in traffic and missing it for anything.
    However I did have company over that day. I would have rather not. But i'm kind of wishy washy like that. So okay. About 7 minutes before the eclipse.I was getting my camera ready. So I could film it at the same time as I was watching it. And the person I was with was saying "Look up it's happening.It's happening, look up right now. Look up, you're missing it. You're missing it!!" ( I knew I wasn't. But I knew it was close and that I had to hurry and finish what I was doing) Well he was making me really nervous and I snapped At him. Apparently he wanted to make some sort of This moment and have us be hugging or kissing at that moment (Not my plan at all.) When I snapped at him his feelings got hurt and then I felt bad so I was trying to smooth it over and I have a d d really bad so that's all it took!! I got distracted. And while I was trying to Explain to him that I didn't mean to hurt his feelings and all that. I totally missed all four minutes of totality.
    Yeah . That's what I did.
    And now every time I see a video or something mentioned about it.I just feel sick.

    I took a couple of videos, I only got one picture but I am glad that I did. I didn't notice until much later in repeated viewings that I captured the second set of street lights coming on.
    My friend came over from the UK to see it. We managed to drive a couple of hours and found a nice spot.
    I tell people it is like all the sudden a magic ring is in the sky you can see some stars and the light before sunrise and sunset is all around you. I missed the 2017 one but this one was a lot closer. I'm not sure I'll live until 125 to watch it when it happens in totality over my house.

      He did point out 99% is not 100 and I am so glad we drove a couple of hours south.

    Absolutely dude, can relate to when you talk about people traveling thousands of miles to see the eclipse and some people are in the oarh and dont even want to look outside
    I wanted nothing short of a gaurentee of clear skies. My plans went from texas, to Illinois, to Vermont, to eventually a spot in Canada.
    I drove from California through all those states all the way uo to Canada. I tried so hard to see and photograph the eclipse id be disheartened if someone else who lived in a clear path of totality to simply not want to look at it.
    Luckily i got to see it but man, that drive and quick change in plans was stressful as hell but i got the shots 😁.
    I was so happy, i teared up after it was all over.

      So wild - but I think a lot of those people who refuse to go outside and look don't understand that it happens in those 4 minutes - many of them might just remember partials when they were young, needing glasses to watch it and it taking a few hours to complete, all while being bored as a kid. Such a bummer but glad you were able to get photos and see it!

    I have a similar story.I met someone on the elevator at my hotel that I just drove an extra twelve hours to get to be in clear skies . The couple was actually checking out of the hotel. I asked if they were going to watch the eclipse and they said yes, they were going to watch it from their front porch and I mentioned how lucky they were to live on the center line. however, they said they actually were going to only get 98% totality and I think they could see the blood drain out of my face. I explained. I could not understand why they were leaving the center line to drive a few miles to be out of totality! I did the same thing and tried to explain that 98% is not the same as totality. It's sort of like almost getting to an have an orgasm ....but then you don't!!!

There are many people that doesn't care about these kind of events and it is totally fine.

    • @ianlauerastro
      @ianlauerastro  4 месяца назад

      Of course, and you can't force people to like things. What I noticed is a gap in knowledge about what was going to happen. In my experience many of them remember eclipses when they were young (particularly partial eclipses), needing glasses to watch it and it taking a few hours to complete, all while being bored as a kid. And to be fair, partials (to me) are pretty boring events and I would not travel to see a partial eclipse. Many "saw" the total eclipse in 2017, and when I asked, they said they were in an area where it was only a partial, not totality.

    That is absolutely crazy! Some people don't wanna see the eclipse because it's the reality of the Cosmos and pretty much the existence of this planet and of life around them! Some people are too religious and grew up religious and unfortunately to think out of the boxes very hard for them and many of them low-key know that there is something much more out there in this universe.
    It's just that some choose to be stubborn and they know that they want to be stubborn about it.
    Because the reality is out there in their fingertips as far as learning about the creation of earth, etc., etc., and that's the part right there that they get irritated about.
    Some people say that people should worship the coming of Jesus rather than getting excited or threw it about a solar eclipse.. and that's why rather than getting jealous they don't want to get excited about it because they choose to be stubborn.
