The problem is that adjusting to get the pinion right will mess up the caster angle. It looks just about right now and will be way off once the pinion is correct.
I'm new to the world of RCs but I bought two MN99s for my son and I after watching your previous videos. I waterproofed them by following another of your videos. And now you've shown this metal upgrade I think I'll have Xmas sorted. Really appreciate your work and looking forward to your comparison video with the MN stock setup.
Thank you so much. I have the mn 96 and I Also did research on how much it would cost to metal it out and you're on the money with price. Guaranteed that I'm buying it. You sir...you are the MAN!
Hey tomley hope you're well dude, just bought myself one of these, got a hbx devastator a while ago an got into crawling, so bought this because I watched you're mn99s review, love you're videos bro, hope you an family are keeping well. Keep up the good work matey
the A285004 shocks that I like may be slightly longer than those, and I mount the tops to the inboard tray holes, they're about 1" to the inside of the normal shock holes giving a lot more travel. haven't had issue with tires running into them, but idk with that beastie.
@@TomleyRC yupyup, and with the tops of the shocks angled in the "pull rods" travel lots further before the shocks run out of travel. its how I've set my C-14, C-24, and MN D90 if you've watched the more recent run videos they all show it off. when they're at the rear tray holes it won't be standing tall like a monster truck, then you can adjust your links to level the axle casings, the drive shafts won't threaten to be kinking (is why they tilted the axles!). yes you'll lose some center clearance at the gearbox casing, but body and chassis rails lower (gearbox battery etc) is harder to side tip as flex itself goes way up.. like 2-1/4" to 2-3/8" of one wheel lift. it won't take you long to sort that stuff now.
It´s interesting to see how, in their relentless drive to push their products up market while keeping them affordable, different companies cut costs. It looks as though MN Models have specified a set of relatively high quality components, but have had to skimp on quality control. I wonder whether the WPL chassis will turn up with empty oil shocks and maladjusted linkages, or whether they´ll have cut costs in other areas instead. I´m also eager to watch your future comparison of this with its RTR sibling - to what extent will all the metal bits make it a better-performing rig?
I think this will win on power/torque on the Stock Vs Upgraded. But it's not really got the flex or the right tyres for the job. Of course... I will be routing for the underdog as always :)
@@TomleyRC curious if you followed along my game plan starting with moving the shock tops inboard. after that its link length to put the axles right, and shock collar adjustment to dial in the flex. if those ARE the A285004 shocks it'll definitely work out nicely, with stock plastic links I'm getting 2-1/4 to 2-3/8 of one wheel lift from the MN D-90, so front+rear axle twist total is pretty high (for what it is anyway).
Hi Bro, I recently got the same model at Banggod, I had to move two links to give the axis distance, and with the other links I was able to angle the axles with respect to the gearbox. Sometimes the most functional point is also the most visually unsightly point of pumpking, which is when the connector of the links is less forced. Personally, I really liked this kit, I only acquired other wheels, bumpers and gearboxes. Acquiring everything in a kit makes the components also compatible. I hope you have a great day. I am fascinated by your channel, I wish you the best.
Yeah I was gonna say buying it already pre assembled like that is cheaper . I speak from experience still waiting on pieces to get here as well. Roughly over $225 US.
Good info. I see that WPL version much cheaper;approx 110 euro shipped. So look for a real cheap WPL c kit for the body , it could land around 140-150 euro all in, not bad. I was looking to have a 6x6 aside form my b-24, and kitted to my liking it would be 80-90 euro without esc and receiver.
go over the chassis, apply some threadlock here & there ofc as well. Would be interesting too see this with a brushless 370 motor, like a 4300 - 6000 kv motor on 2s. Feel free too build a monster truck out of this with some hex wideners & a low kv brushless system & perhaps 1:10th scale 2.2 inch buggy rear wheels all around.
@Tomley RC I have this Chassis, the Chassis rails are not metal (I think carbonfibers or fiberglass?), is there any way to source those rails in steel / alu ? that is the only non-metal part that would complete this bit of kit.. more realistic and with the added weight will be much better for a crawler
I want to see your comparinson between this and a standard. I am building a MN99s, its already Full metal with a HW 1080, 3s lipo and a 370 wpl 2 speed gearbox. Love that little crawler
The question answered was is it cheaper. Of course it is but let's be honest, building it yourself will always have that satisfaction. Specially me when I first built my first kit. Took me almost 5 hours lol.
Can you put the original MN wheels on this or at least fit bigger tires? It’d be a shame to ditch the metal wheels, but those low profile tires are a let down even if they do work decently.
Just got my first R/C this week. A 1/12 MN 99s for about 60 dollars including shipping, and so far have not been disappointed. It handles the sand, gravel and volcanic rock "trails" I've tested it out on well and even surprised me on some of the inclines I drove it up. Certainly considering this metal upgrade shown in the video.
Thanks for posting. I like everything except the low profile tires. Do you think you would get more flex by changing the coil springs? Looking forward to the running video. Also, are you going to get the WPL version of this chassis?😀
@@TomleyRC definitely will! it'll drop down 1/4" or a little more, then all the "pull rod" readjustment to go with it to put the axle casings close to flat, maybe input pumpkins pointed upwards 3-4 degrees to help relieve kinking at the U-joints. when it's settled at its full running weight, should be able to lift front or rear bumper near 1/4" before tires lift off the table, roughly 1/4 to 1/3 of the shock travel (from the top). that'll get you "in the zone" with positive and negative suspension travel both sides.. is adjusted with the shock spring collars.
I've been eyeing this chassis since I saw it. While it looks nice,I think it needs smaller wheels with a nice offroad tire. I can live with the square axles as several home built off road trucks here in the states uses the axles off old military trucks, lol.
Good looking chassis but it's a shame for the price it doesn't have much flex, surely they could have given it more articulation. All in good vid and really informative 👍
