- Rent doubling for Greensboro seniors
Residents at a Greensboro apartment complex are facing a rent increase, double in some cases, forcing them to make tough decisions about their housing future.
"The exorbitant amount of rent prices in the name of renovating or bringing something up to market value, I understand the necessity of that, but you don't have to do that, in my opinion, and cause harm while you're doing it," said Josie Williams, the executive director the Greensboro Housing Coalition.
GHC held an event Thursday to help the residents of New Garden Manor and British Lake Village. Both properties, managed by Brown Investment Properties, are seeing rent increases.
Brown Investment Properties sent a letter to New Garden residents in February notifying them that rent would be increased to $1230 per month in June. This applied to residents with expired leases who are thus living month-to-month at the complex. In the letter obtained by News 2, the company said the rate increase is due to the "escalating cost of operation and the need for significant capital improvements." Currently, residents pay between $575 and $675.

It's not only senior citizens that are facing eviction --- it's also senior citizens that are facing *foreclosure* on their homes ---- 😢
I’m reading some of these comments like…”does anybody think before they speak” This is happening everywhere! It’s truly devastating knowing most senior citizens live off SS! They can’t work. The government will cut their benefits. Buying a house may not be an option for some! Who wants a roommate at 93! Some will have to move into their children homes.

It's no different in Florida and many other states it's time our government step up stop all this squabbling over stupidity and help the people that voted them in office we are in need of severe help here. It's not just the elderly it's the disabled it's the young families it's affecting everyone and the cost of food raising so high OMG I don't even eat the last week of the month I tell everyone I'm fasting embarrassed that my disability can't take care of me and I'm unable to work to make it up. Instead of fighting about abortions and of the trivial stuff fight about your people starving and becoming homeless.

@@drnutell Well let's see, the majority of our current zoning laws in the US are derived from Red lining maps, and Red lining was specifically designed to keep white families in nice neighborhoods and minorities in poor degraded ones. As per the US Census Bureau in 2019, the following statistics reflect Home Ownership among racial groups:
White - 73.3%
All races - 64.6%
Hispanic/Latinx - 47.5%
Black - 42.1%
Zoning laws which have disproportionately benefited White Americans have enabled them to be the only racial group that possess a Home ownership rate well above the national average. This needs to change and we need zoning laws mended to cater to all people not just wealthy and White.

@GoinHam10Four, to answer your question: YES, I’m a homeowner! FYI: I own 2 houses and 1 condo. Unlike other shameful homeowners, I refuse to take advantage of my renters, especially during these difficult times. Shame on homeowners exploiting the economy for greed! Anything else Troll?? 😙🙄🤔
It's small landlords who are hurting the worse over big landlords they are getting out of the business they have the more affordable rents

Exactly if 10 people roomed together then 5 units would open up. More supply lower prices. That's how I afforded the downpayment for my first house.

People who want the government to help should demand money goes toward seniors instead of paying of young, able bodied adult's student loans.
People don't understand these people are old, disabled and helpless. It is not as easy to get help as people think. This happening all over this country. Our society is letting this type of crime flourish because it is being done to people that no one cares about or wants to deal with. One day it will happen to all of us, because nothing gets done. This is criminal.

Yet they overwhelmingly voted for a $1.7 BILLION bond package for the local school district that will be funded through increased property taxes (paid by a jump of up to 33% in property values), and voted for the same politicians to run in the primaries that have been in office that have caused this housing crisis and have been in charge of government for years as they complain about cost of living increases, and both the County and City are asking for over $800 million in budget expenses for the year to be funded by the same property tax increases, and the sales tax increase that failed on the ballot this May will appear again in Nov. “because voters didn’t understand how it benefited them” or they would have voted for it, so obviously these someone living here doesn’t understand how all this impacts the cost of rent in our area. And this doesn’t just affect seniors, as college students can’t find housing, nor can people moving here for the jobs at corporations that we’re paying exorbitant tax incentives because our local government has agreed to blackmail in order to lure them for the promise of possible future income and property tax payments. We can’t bail these people out, they’ve created their own problem as they create the problem for all of us by putting huge tax money spenders in charge while expecting free stuff in return. The economy doesn’t work that way.

Because no one really cares. Old people are treated the worst in this country. They work all their lives, only to end up struggling and living out their last days with nothing to eat because they have to pay their rent and try to keep the power on. No one wants to deal with it, so it never gets addressed. It is heartbreaking.

The landlord has to pay for the property, insurance, upkeep, property tax which is going up about 33% thanks to our Democratic City and County politicians, recoup losses of people who haven’t paid them for two years because the Feds said so… how is that “American Greed”? All property values in the US have increases due to inflation thanks to our government’s bad economic policies, as well as housing costs in our area have increased due to our City and County spending out tax money to lure corporations and students here to “grow our community” which has meant there are fewer places to live than people needing a place to live. This is a government created problem, not an American Greed, as in citizen or business, created problem.

This is government housing they’re being thrown out of. Then the landlords are fixing it up, turning it into private housing, and renting it out at higher prices. They are trying to make up for two years of non-payments during COVID.
