Very pleased to announce the release of my new eBook, 'Row Your Fat Off!'. If you have just began using the rowing machine or recently purchased a machine for yourself, THIS is the ultimate guide to get you started in the right direction towards your fat loss goals! You can check it out from the link in the description box above! THANK YOU for all of your support!!
I’ve been using the C2 since 2006. Best rower around. As for price, I bought directly from the manufacturer and saved a bundle. Their web site is great to keep track of you progress, have virtual rowing teams and some great inspirational motivation to keep you rowing.
I rarely hear anybody say anything positive on the noise the concept 2 makes. For me it's what makes it a perfect machine. Not only does it give the impression you're putting in a lot of effort, but once you're familiar with it, you can keep the same split time with your eyes closed so you can focus on every sensation in your body. Just thinking of the sound makes me want to workout!
I agree, I like how the sounds gets louder when pulling harder. At the end of the workout, at the end of your last sprint you try to make it as loud as possible;
As a fat guy (for now), I was pleasantly surprised to hear considerations about how belly size can impact the experience. I think it is frequently overlooked by fit people to whom it would never even occur. Nice review. (Already bought a concept 2 E a couple of weeks ago before seeing this review and I am loving the machine and the rowing workout)
C2 is the best! Used one at the local gym and decided to purchase one for my home use. It's perfect for me and the price was affordable. Their staff is more than knowledgeable and super friendly.
Training Tall Would it disturb neighbours in a flat next door or beneath? I would want to get early morning rowing done without noise complaints from neighbours
air rowers are loud. water rower sounds like your by the beach or your actually rowing. magnetic rowing is boring plus forsome reason cheaper magnetic rowing machines tend to get easier half way though your row stoke.
Hi Austin, I'm doing well thank you. I have a request. Please make a short class video, something like Clair's 'Go Row Indoor 20-minute workout #1' British Rowing class -- but without the circuits. Thank you very much. John. See ruclips.net/video/THuWp4-pbYs/видео.html
Good to know from a Matrix owner!! Im leaning towards the Matrix!!! Seems like a solid piece of machinery to me!!! Owing from a concept 2... boring and I'm looking for something new to use!!! Bought the water rower..switching it out this week..kept it for a few weeks... i don't like it!! No resistance at all!!!
As a home user longevity and reliability are important factors. With the C2 i can purchase every single spare part for the rower, along with full schematics of the appliance. I can also log into the C2 forum if i have any technical issues and discuss with other users. I can't do this with the Matrix or any other high end rower.
have had great luck with the water rower.parts are pretty easy to get and really easy to fix. in my experience at least. i have a concept 2 as well but i thought I share my experience
I would love to see a comparison between static and dynamic rowers, as the C2 is what most people have access to, but the RP3 is what a lot of rowing clubs use, and what you prefer to train on
I have been using Matrix exclusively for the past year. Great review dude and I agree totally with assessment. Silent - good seat - bad handle design - smooth - cushy seat - good computer.
So the best of both worlds would be to swap parts from each machine and create your own. It would make the Rowing machine lighter keeping the wide stance, and magnetic device, seat of the matrix and the sliding component and handle bar and lighter weight of the Concept 2. I don’t think I have the budget so I’ll stick with the one at my gym. Would love to have either one at home.
Have u had any issues with the Matrix?? Been happy with it?? I've rowed on a concept 2 all my life..but I feel like it puts a lot of pressure on the ankles..jumped on a Matrix and just loved the smoothness!
Matrix looks good and indeed there are many machines out there but the Concept2 has stood the test of time and is still used by most top rowers. I bought my own Concept2 twenty years ago and it is still going strong. A big initial investment but an absolute bargain considering the use it has had. Great review though, always good to see other machines! Thanks for posting!
@@trainingtall no way! When all olimpic team use concept2 all around the world it is nothing to debate about any rowing machine at this point in time, and you know it. They are bullet proof.
@@euplot ... Just because olympic teams use it around the world, does that truly prove the concept2 is the definitive machine for rowing though? Concept2 is a *static rower* but have you ever heard about *dynamic rowing machines* such as the *Oartec Dx* (recently released, roughly twice the price of the concept2) and *RowPerfect/RP3* (been around for a while, but 3 to 4 times the price of the Concept2)? Yes, there is also the dynamic concept rower but apparently it's no where near the experience of the Oartec/RowPerfect. Sliders can also be purchased for the Concept2 to mimic the dynamic experience. There's a reason why Concept has products that tries to mimic the 'dynamic experience.' *Dynamic rowers* are supposedly better at mimicking on the water rowing experience. Dynamics are less stressful on the lower back, heavy focus on proper leg drive, they truly require proper technique to keep the seat in stable position. If your technique is off, you wouldn't be able to do much on a dynamic machine. It other words, *dynamic machines reinforces proper technique.* But because they're more expensive, they're less affordable for large groups. Concept2 has been around for quite a while, they're out there. They're used. They're endorsed. They've got brand recognition. But does that truly mean they're the best? I'm still debating between getting a Concept2 or the Oartec Dx, but because the Concept2 is the less expensive version, I'm more inclined to go with the Concept2, possibly. That doesn't actually make the Concept2 the better machine. The Oartec Dx would probably be the better rower. I might actually go with the Oartec when I decide to get a rower myself but the price of the Concept2 is comparatively more attractive and that could sway my decision. It's still a complete toss up.
@@euplot you should familiarize yourself with RP3 and Technogym skillrow.... We get that the c2 is a good rower, but let's come back down to earth for a little bit.
I've rowed here and there over the years in gyms, but recently watched a lot of videos/read up quite a bit in advance of actually purchasing one of my own. Came upon this video (thank you!), which featured the two rowing machines I was looking most closely at and it answered a lot of my questions. Only thing left to do was go in the store and try them both out. Having now done this, the Matrix is the best machine for me (purchased!). It was a lot more comfortable to sit on and I really like the fluid, nearly soundless movement. I did see what you mean about the finishing pull being easier than the initial pull, but there is definitely still resistance at the end. In other words, to me, it doesn't at all feel like the final pull is too weak; I actually think it feels to have a normal/standard feel at that phase of the stroke. Rather, if anything, the initial pull is more difficult than other machines, which makes the end seems easier than it actually is - hope that makes sense. Regardless, these are incremental differences when compared to other machines. Comparatively, what I most disliked about the Concept 2 was the slack in the chain that seemingly results after each stroke and causes a slight delay before you are able to begin the next stroke. To each their own and all, but I didn't really think the comparison was all that close between the two machines when compared side by side.
You can get a designed seat cushion for Concept 2 which I have and use all time, especially good on longer (5k+) rows. The C2 at our gym is not that loud either. Cheers Peter
I use the "Rowing Machine Seat Cushion for Concept 2 Rowing Machine by Hornet Watersports" which I got via Amazon, UK price £19.99. Just done 30min row and it makes a difference! Also find get better "grip" on seat for higher speed interval training. Also great as just lifts on and off so easy to take to and use at gym. Thanks again for your videos, helping me get better times for C2 challenges. Cheers Peter
I had no idea that "noise" was not mandatory for a rowing machine. That is definitely cool. Had that been a concern, and had I known of the Matrix when I was researching prior to purchase, still that double weight and double price tag would have been hard to swallow. (Mobility was a plus in my case, and I really would have choked at 2 grand). Now that I have a Concept 2, I'm thinking there may be a not-so-small market for a sorbathane seat cover...
I hear ya - the C2 is absolutely a great buy! And there are lots of different options for seat cushions available - and they aren't that expensive either!
For pretty much every piece of fitness equipment there are a few to quite a few contenders (I love Intek weights for example, but others prefer Ivanko or Troy - they are all good) - except in rowing. Concept is the clear choice by a margin. I'm surprised they don't charge more to be honest - because they could and they'd still get bought.
The Concept 2 has a weight limit of 250lbs while the Matrix has a weight limit of 350lbs. So, for many people that are truly overweight the Concept 2 is it really designed for skinny people and not for anyone that is really overweight? When you discuss the Matrix weighs double what the Concept 2 does on that side of the story. The concept 2 when I see big people using it and going fast with it, you can see it moving and even lifting up. Due to the extra weight of the Matrix rower it pretty much stays down and doesn’t move. A big difference when your rowing hard on the Matrix rower and not having to look for weights to help keep it from moving around during a hard workout is a big plus for the Matrix Rower as well. I just got my Matrix Rower 5 days ago and I absolutely love it. What a well built machine. I had the Oxford 6 and boy was that a bad experience. Big plastic sides that no matter how you take them off pieces of plastic will break. It was not a very good unit due to some poor workmanship, but if they’d address a few concerns like the belt getting turned around and the bottom of the pole that holds the console wasn’t so sharp and close the belt it wouldn’t get damaged, which was that and a part bouncing around got me to open the damn thing up in the 1st place.
Not sure where you got the weight limit from. The C2 advertises with 500 pounds… I cannot comment on which machine is better as I basically only know the concept 2, but I do know the concept as being rock solid and reliable. I think for the money it’s hard to find anything better. Money not being an object, there surely are other awesome rowers as well.. but will they stand the test of time as well as concept2. I’m not sure.
Concept 2 mimics the feeling of rowing on the water as much as possible, the distance between your legs shorter for that reason. I apologize if there are any mistakes, I don't know English so I wrote on google translator for that reason
I’ve worked in Houston for a commercial fitness repair company since 2001. First as a tech, then estimating parts since 2008. You’re best option is Concept II. The parts are readily available, even for older models. The parts are inexpensive. All the other brands y’all have mentioned, most aren’t commercially rated. The Matrix is, but the longevity of their units aren’t. The owner of my company had a C2 in his house until he put a stepmill in there. Matrix consoles are super expensive to replace, after the warranty expires. You might as well buy a new machine. I don’t know how much the units are, but the console on Matrix RXP is $2,065.99 + installation, labor, trip, shipping. Concept 2 consoles are about $500 + service charges.
Some observations: The extra foot placement width on the Matrix is not going to help you in a boat; it would be more beneficial to work out your flexibility issues. Seats, cushy does not always equal comfortable, while the Concept II can make your butt numb on a long row, I can row comfortably for a considerable amount of time on a properly shaped wooden seat like on my single. Handles, the Concept II handle is too hard, when you start averaging an hour or more per day on the machine it will be uncomfortable, I wrapped mine with tennis racket cushion grip tape, this makes it awesomely comfortable and brings the diameter to about that of a sweep oar. About the sound, there's nothing quite like the whoosh..., whoosh..., whoosh... sound of someone really getting on it, on a Concept II, very motivational, plus I can walk into a gym and just by listening tell if someone knows what they are doing on an erg. But, yeah, I guess it would be nice if they were quieter, then I might watch TV on long rows instead of playing games like 'How consistent can I keep my projected finish meters?"
Hahaha we all love that "game" of how consistent can I keep my projected finish meters. I like the points you've brought up! However, I am not sure if you're aware but Hudson has been designing boat shoes that have a wider position. Tried them while rowing in an 8 and they rock! It might become the new standard!
Great tip on the racket tape, gotta try it out. For media consumption while rowing, bluetooth sport earbuds and a laptop, pad or a phone could change your rowing experience completely, did for me. I watch movies or listen to audio books from Audible, and kilometers just fly by. Works well on calorie burn 10K's but might be too distracting for intense workouts.
Concept feels better. But at my gym the concept foot strap was always coming loose. And the handlebar on concept feels better. And on matrix I was always straightening the rope on handlebar. So I just bought the C2 for home. Either one is great but I’d say C2
Concept 2 have addressed the cushy issue regarding the seat. I.e you can have a tractor seat, or they sell a cushion for the standard seat, I know, mine has just arrived today.
Just as in biking, "soft, cushy seats" cause bloodflow problems, when used over the long term. This is why road bike seats are generally much firmer than is comfortable for someone unaccustomed to them. The Concept 2 seat is designed properly. It is a bit of a disservice to customers to lead them to believe a softer seat is necessarily a "preferred" thing. Concept 2's have universally high ratings for a reason. One kinda needs to be experienced with specific equipment types in order to give good reviews on them. :-D
@@ShortBusRuss I guess I'll hold off for a bit on that extra cushioning I'd considered adding. I'll wait and see how my butt adjusts over the next few months. A *very* helpful comment, thanks!
Hi Austin, Thanks for your videos, I raw much better since I watch them ! Could you do a video about "How to use the stroke profile to improve my rowing technic". It should be good also if you have advices about drive lenght
I have tried out some rowing machines with magnetic -brakes, but bye now all of them sufferd from the fact, that in air the resistance rises with the square of the speed, whie magnetic braking is linear to speed. (What causes a felt lose in resistance in the second part of the stroke) May this probem can get overcome bye electronically increasing teh resistance during the stroke(increase magnetic field, during every stroke) but I'm not sure if any producer of rowingmachines in the hole world has already implemneted such a feature?!?
Really question is: can i still row? I used to, but had to stop due to herniated discs in the lumbar spine; now those are "healed", meaning there are no discs left there and the vertebrae have sort of fused together. Thankfully no pain (though it's by no means the ideal situation for my spine to be in). I'd like to get back to rowing because it was the best total body workout i had ever done and need to get back in shape. Should i buy a conventional rowing machine or something from RP3 maybe? Or even the Concept2 on slides, as i've heard that not only it delivers the closest feeling to rowing on the water but it's supposedly gentler, softer on the back. Any suggestions?
Before finalizing your review please try out a Matrix with a few years of use on it. There are 3 of them at a gym near me, and all three are like rowing on cobblestones. I don't know if the rollers get out of round over time or what, but they were so bad I decided to join a different gym with a Concept 2. I have never seen a Concept 2 with that problem.
Holy cow! I have not heard of this issue, Kurt! Thanks for sharing. There are definitely wear-and-tear issues that can happen similarly to the Concept 2. Appreciate the comment!
I've used many. I like the Octane Ro the best. Best blend of wind resistance and mag resistance, that is adjustable. It's 129 lbs that moves and stores easily.. and can handle 350 lb users.... so it is ROCK SOLID. The handle design is ingenious. The display design is bright, well defined and contains the information you are actually interested in. I HATE machines that are somehow tied to subscriptions. The Octane Ro has no such subscription model. If you can afford $1700, Octane Ro is what I would suggest.
do u have any information on water rowers & how they track meters? i got a sunny health water erg for during quarantine last year & the difference between that & concept 2 is insane, obviously. but one of my biggest problems with it is that my 2k & 500m times are significantly worse when i use it, even with no time in between erging on a concept at school & erging at home on mine. like, 20 seconds, to even a minute difference sometimes, which is hella discouraging
Austin, another great video. I have learned a lot from you over the last couple of months on proper technique and how to increase effeciency. Wondering if you have any experience or had a chance to try a Sole Fitness SR500? Not sure if this is a new competitor in this category, but not finding much out there. Sole is no slouch when it comes to building quality durable treadmills (mine has several thousand miles) so I would expect the same of their rower. Thanks and keep up the great work.
My experience with each of them....The Concept 2 such comfortable and challenging rower.....wonderful feelings into 1 hour...... The Matrix the handles are too thick and no ergonomic to me and make deep hurt and sleep my arms in just 5 minutes of training....useless(I tried it during 3 different days and it happpen the same again)
About to hop into rowing for exercise/fitness...I don't see that you've ever reviewed the Inspire CR2 cross rower? What are your thoughts on this machine vs. the Matrix or Concept2?
The indoor rowing community use Concept 2’s. If you’re going to want to compete, then it’s going to have to be on a C2 and finally, indoor rowing is tough, very tough, so a sore arse (which incidentally the C2 has never given me) will be the least of your worries.
I'm trying to figure out what rowing machine to by, what I'm looking at with most consideration is what give you the best workout. I've only ever been on the concept 2 but I would love to consider a water rower or this magnetic one. The handle thing isn't an issue if you ask me, looks easily replaceable. I've got no problem dropping 2k on a machine i just have so much issue figuring out what to get. I've actually looked with great interest at the Dynamic Concept rower. Anyways thanks for the info.
Bought a water rower...a month ago..returning it for the matrix. Rowed on concept 2 all my life...its ok.. but puts alot of strain on the ankles...boring mCgine!! Matrix seems smoother and is more comfortable...as well as challenging!! Beautiful machine while concept is dull and boring...seat uncomfortable .
@@veronicab.4200 I've actually looked at the Matrix a few times, I've heard a few times that they get easier over time. The big thing that has made me resist getting a water rower so far is all the tracks the seats sit on. I like to be particularly agressive and the seat need to be on a nice track for my preference. I'm aware that that each machine is adjustable in difficulty I just don't know enough, I understand it pretty much all about preference. Thanks for the input, I've been leaning matrix more and more.
@@spatha2456 thank u for sharing. I have a warer rower top if the line. Nothing wrong with the seat!! I just need more resistance..unfortunately he is sold out and I am stuck with the water rower for another week!!! Seems like covid 19 has everyone investing in fitness!! GO Matrix!! ;)
Thanks Austin! Whenever I see videos of rowers that are about rowing (not product placement), almost all of them are on Concept 2. I guess there is a reason for that. Speaking of Concept 2, a comparison that I would really like to see is between Concept 2 standard vs. dynamic. The latter is supposed to more closely mimic rowing on water, and a few years ago Eric Murray set a record for one-hour rowing on the dynamic (the record has been beaten by now, but that's beside the point). So apparently one can get a good workout on the dynamic Concept 2. But despite this rational conclusion, all the videos of rowing on the dynamic look to me like "cheating", which is probably because the seat is barely moving. Austin, if you have some experience of rowing on the dynamic Concept 2, can you share how it feels compared to the standard erg?
SK another way you can simulate dynamic rowing is with slides that you can set the (C2) rowing machine on. And you can get just as good of a workout on either a dynamic or a static machine except the splits may be affected so there are separate categories for dynamic and static records
Thanks Miko! The slides are out of the question for me for reasons of limited space. On the other hand, the absolute values of splits per se are not important to me either (not competitive enough, I guess), but being able to get a solid one to two hours of rowing slog is what I like most. So I really appreciate your advice that the dynamic can produce as good workouts as the standard. That's a serious argument in favor of getting the dynamic model as my next rower. Thanks again!
Hey SK! Thanks for dropping a comment and creating good discussion! Dynamic absolutely mimics rowing on the water closer than a static machine does. The dynamic creates the feel of the "boat moving beneath you" as you row. There is no question about it: any effort done on a static Concept2 can be beaten on a Dynamic machine. Because the machine moves beneath the seat, it is actually much easier to increase your stroke rate without using as much energy as you would use on a static machine.
Funny how all machines except R3 and Concept2 have much lower split times. I row a 1:54 2000 (I’m 60) and on the water rower I was at 1:41 Guess which machine my coach looks at?
I started shopping for a rower just before COVID shut it all down and now there's almost zero chance of getting a Concept 2 before July. I don't want to wait that long. What's your 2nd favorite rower?
Look at the Spirit 800 model. Concept 2 patent is out and everybody can make one. Spirit is in stock and I ship them daily. More expensive but quiet and better warranty.
Hi Austin! I've found a good quality/price compromise in the V-Fit Tornado Air Rower, which basically we can define as a "mini Concept 2" for home use. It is a very popular rowing machine in the UK and an Amazon number one choice, and all in all it's a good bang for the buck. It features an interesting progressive air resistance, which is not bad at all for long distances. It shares quite a bit of similarities with the Concept 2, including the noisiness :D The two models you are presenting are definitely of a higher level, much more suitable for Gyms or Rowing Clubs than for at home workouts... By the way, at 1:10 I saw Vera De Milo suddenly appear! :D :D Ah ah ah Keep it up man!
But what about the monitor/console? Matrix does not seem to have same ability to set up workouts or capture details about interval details, memory storage of workouts?
Huge factor: the flesh. The people, customer service, owners,....the corporate culture. Matrix?: Taiwanese mega corp. Call for customer service > will get multi level auto select, possibly, with patience getting human being who has little knowledge of (for example) computer interactive procedure that was tested out on consumers/bleeding edge. Concept2: Call, or walk in the front door, you can talk to Customer Service people who have been there 9 years, 12 years. Ask to speak to one of the Dreissigacker, brothers (founders, owners, since 1976), and you can! While the other brother is not far up the road, continuing to operate a nonprofit that has supported and build many stellar coaches and athletes in rowing, nordic skiing, running and biking.
It actually tends to wear out the chain more! Setting it up to the machine keeps the chain healthier for longer - plus I am 6'8" and have the reach to put it all the way back!
@@ToddStClair-vk4ov Concept D is $900. Matrix is $1895. I'm not a math scientist but pretty sure 19 is MORE than two times as much as 9. If you can sell me a new Matrix rower for $900...I'll give you my email and you can send me an invoice.
I’m trying to pay off debts, and can only afford to spend $500 for the Schwinn Crewmaster (or something similar). Do you think the Crewmaster is good enough to get started on while I work on saving up for a Concept2?
In my opinion, I'd seriously consider being more patient and just save up for the C2. If you drop 500, you think you'll be able to turn around and sell the schwinn for even $350 on craigslist? 500 is about 1/2 of what you need. Just keep saving and get the one you truly want. That's just my opinion. I love my concept2, and know that with minimal maintenance, it'll be the only rower I'll buy for 20+ years!
You don’t need to spend a lot of money to get a quality gym like experience. It may not have the fancy digital screens but just put on a tv and go for a row.
Never seen a matrix rower in a British rowing club. On the other hand the concept is everywhere, every club has a long bank of machines as they are the preferred option for water towers.
@Training Tall ... Will you do a comparison between *Dynamic* (Oartec Dx, RowPerfect/RP3) versus *Static* (Concept2) rowers? And no, Concept2's verison of the dynamic is supposedly not even remotely the same as the Oartec or the RowPerfect. Dynamic rowers are supposed to be easier on the lower back, emphasis on leg drive and reinforces proper technique with every single stroke.
Does the Matrix maintain online performance data? I am motivated by peer group competition, so I am afraid that the Concept 2's data (and erg competitions) are too valuable to give up. Otherwise, the Matrix might be better for me.
Video could've been 10 seconds long. Couldn't find the price on matrix's website (gotta call) so I looked up what a place nearby that sells decent equipment lists it as. $900 for the concept 2..... $1900 for the matrix. Is there even as debate exploring further? Rowers are simple machines... even the concept 2 at $900 is a bit extreme imo.... but compared to other "high end" rowers (in quotes because... it's a rower.... it is literally a seat that slides and a handle attached to a string/ cable/ chain which is attached to a flywheel or whatever medium used to supply resistance. I never understand how companies decide upon price points for equipment. I mean how does as piece of equipment that weighs 57 lbs cost 900 bucks? That's almost $16/lb. To put that in perspective... going on metalminer.com, titanium is $25.50/lb. Yeah. Still, for the money the concept 2 is (irrationally... and pathetically) the best bang for your buck from what I can tell after months of research.
10 seconds long ? are you kidding ? The video covered a hell of a lot of issues that people would want to know if they were deciding between the two , well laid out video covering everything I wanted to know, not sure what you are on about lol
Has anyone with a Matrix Rower that goes through the user option and goes though age, weight and so on start a challenge work out and the calories don’t seem to work? Only bug I have found so far. Has anyone else had this silly issue?
Why would you ever use anything other than a concept 2? It’s what they use at international level competition and it’s also what real rowers use. The noise is most similar to real rowing along with the foot plates and the seat.
also cheaper and easier to fix no doubt ,their websites replacement parts nearly worldwide shipping and the parts cost as much as the production only ,i bet this matrix company would charge u an arm and a leg for a bolt to be shipped to you

Such a true statement! I would have to agree!
I agree, I like how the sounds gets louder when pulling harder. At the end of the workout, at the end of your last sprint you try to make it as loud as possible;
Im with this. I love the noise. It helps me get feedback about my output.
true story.. Well said!
I often row with my eyes closed on it..with an occasional peek on the frequency.
I totally agree! I actually find the sound melodic!!! And how strange, I also feel like rowing when I think of the sound!
As a fat guy (for now), I was pleasantly surprised to hear considerations about how belly size can impact the experience. As a home user longevity and reliability are important factors. With the C2 i can purchase every single spare part for the rower, along with full schematics of the appliance. I can also log into the C2 forum if i have any technical issues and discuss with other users. I can't do this with the Matrix or any other high end rower.
Really good insight here, Martin! You're totally right! And that is extremely important for longevity in your investment into the machine!
I thought the Concept 2 never breaks down. Why would you need spare parts??
have had great luck with the water rower.parts are pretty easy to get and really easy to fix. in my experience at least. i have a concept 2 as well but i thought I share my experience
@@fortyoneshades 🤣🤣
I have the C2, great rower and the customer service is outstanding!!
C2 does have some of the best customer service out there!
No contest: CONCEPT2
2020 resolution:get myself into a row machine and this video really helped. 👍
I'm glad!
I would love to see a comparison between static and dynamic rowers, as the C2 is what most people have access to, but the RP3 is what a lot of rowing clubs use, and what you prefer to train on
Gonna see what I can do to get my hands on a dynamic rower soon!
Zac Philippa concept 2 makes a dynamic erg so it would be great to see a comparison between C2’s static and its dynamic model.
I mean Concept 2 has been doing it since the early 70's. I like the C2-PM5 when rowing.
Yup! A great machine!
I have been using Matrix exclusively for the past year. Great review dude and I agree totally with assessment. Silent - good seat - bad handle design - smooth - cushy seat - good computer.
Overall, a solid machine! Thanks for sharing, Brian! Keep up the great work, man!
@@veronicab.4200 hey Veronica, if money wasnt an option which would you choose between the two? I'm torn between both of them!
Thanks for the kind words! Totally agree with what you said!
Only rower I know is the concept 2, it’s what my gyms own. Plus it’s what you and Dark Horse demo on.
Concept 2 definitely has the edge above most competitors. But it is clear that other brands are up to challenge them!
There's a reason why Concept has products that tries to mimic the 'dynamic experience.'
*Dynamic rowers* are supposedly better at mimicking on the water rowing experience.
You're awesome. Keeping me in shape through Covid-19!!!
Doing my best!! Keep up the great work, Karen!
I found the Matrix to be harder per meter than the Concept 2. Of course I spend my whole life on a Concept!
Hey John - TOTALLY agree with you here!
Hey Bradley! Really appreciate you chiming in here. Thanks for the details and sharing your experience! I think it will help a lot of people out.
Magnetic ones are most of the time cheaper. And it doesnt give the same feeling.
Feet closer together is more like real rowing. A good thing imo.
You can get a designed seat cushion for Concept 2 which I have and use all time, especially good on longer (5k+) rows. The C2 at our gym is not that loud either. Cheers Peter
Oh interesting! I'd love to check out that seat cushion!
The C2 advertises with 500 pounds…
I cannot comment on which machine is better as I basically only know the concept 2, but I do know the concept as being rock solid and reliable.
I think for the money it’s hard to find anything better. Money not being an object, there surely are other awesome rowers as well.. but will they stand the test of time as well as concept2. I’m not sure.
Sold! Matrix, it is. I could put a concept 2 handle on it.
That's a good point!!
nonono
bad decision
i’ve rowed my whole life, the matrix ergo meter is nothing compared to concept 2 model d or e. or the rp3 dynamic. although it does look cooler.
I use the concept 2 at my gym the seat on the Matrix is the first thing I noticed omg looks like heaven
Haha the seat really does feel SO much better :)
They should check the bicycle handlebars and saddles from the ergonomic aspect. They also can use a padded bicycle short for the hard padded seats.
Some observations:
The extra foot placement width on the Matrix is not going to help you in a boat; it would be more beneficial to work out your flexibility issues.
Pretty sure the majority of people on concept 2s are not rowing to get on a boat lol.. They simply want a workout.
Which machine do you prefer?
The RP3 !
C2
Holy crap. The price is a huge difference. You can get almost two Concept 2s for a Matrix. Concept 2 all the way!
Concept feels better. But at my gym the concept foot strap was always coming loose. And the handlebar on concept feels better. And on matrix I was always straightening the rope on handlebar. So I just bought the C2 for home. Either one is great but I’d say C2
Good vid :)
... question doesn’t need to be asked 😬 C2 !
Concept 2 have addressed the cushy issue regarding the seat. I.e you can have a tractor seat, or they sell a cushion for the standard seat, I know, mine has just arrived today.
The seats on the Concept 2 are part of the fun...
Haha yeah the "butt shimmy" you have to do in the middle of a long workout is just SO fun ;)
LOL no pain no gain..
@@gregoryreese8491 No problem, man. Good luck with the rower. I am about to start upping my physical activity myself this Fall/Winter.
I find the c2 noise kind of satisfying, like you are really moving something
Hi Austin, Thanks for your videos, I raw much better since I watch them ! Could you do a video about "How to use the stroke profile to improve my rowing technic". It should be good also if you have advices about drive lenght
I am glad you've enjoyed the videos! Great video suggestions, too! Thank you!
The C2 app has drive related readings and I have wondered about how to use that info to improve performance. Peter.
I'm much interested in the force-curve/feeling of rowing of this machine.
Yes - I need to make that discussion video, because it is a BIG difference between the two machines.
I have tried out some rowing machines with magnetic -brakes, but bye now all of them sufferd from the fact, that in air the resistance rises with the square of the speed, whie magnetic braking is linear to speed.
(What causes a felt lose in resistance in the second part of the stroke)
May this probem can get overcome bye electronically increasing teh resistance during the stroke(increase magnetic field, during every stroke)
but I'm not sure if any producer of rowingmachines in the hole world has already implemneted such a feature?!?
The gym needs to take sandpaper to the rollers to remove the dust and grime that builds up over time.
Nice, once again many thanks
No problem! Thanks again for watching!
A lot of people say the Concept 2 is loud, and a lot of people say that it isn't. I guess I'll just have to wait and see if I puss off my neighbors.
Piss off*
I've used many.
Bruh they are $1500 on Amazon.. For an extra 200 might as well get the matrix lol
Concept2 you can buy an extended monorail if you're super tall! Not sure about the matrix. You can also buy a gel seat cushion for $20.
do u have any information on water rowers & how they track meters? i got a sunny health water erg for during quarantine last year & the difference between that & concept 2 is insane, obviously. but one of my biggest problems with it is that my 2k & 500m times are significantly worse when i use it, even with no time in between erging on a concept at school & erging at home on mine. like, 20 seconds, to even a minute difference sometimes, which is hella discouraging
I haven't tried it out, but would like to! Sorry I can't be more of a help.. thank you for watching my videos and for your kind words, Jeff!
My experience with each of them....The Concept 2 such comfortable and challenging rower.....wonderful feelings into 1 hour...... The Matrix the handles are too
thick and no ergonomic to me and make deep hurt and sleep my arms in just 5 minutes of training....useless(I tried it during 3 different days and it happpen the same again)
How do you use a rowing machine for beginners?
About to hop into rowing for exercise/fitness...I don't see that you've ever reviewed the Inspire CR2 cross rower? What are your thoughts on this machine vs. the Matrix or Concept2?
Or maybe the Zebex 2?
C2!
The indoor rowing community use Concept 2’s. If you’re going to want to compete, then it’s going to have to be on a C2 and finally, indoor rowing is tough, very tough, so a sore arse (which incidentally the C2 has never given me) will be the least of your worries.
Better. When there are only two choices, the word is better.
Concept2 closer foot placement is better if you are practicing for rowing in a boat
Except for the new Hudson footplates that are wider!
Concept 2 all the way
For most, I agree!
Either one can give you the best workout. It's about how hard you yourself row!
@@trainingtall Sounds about right, i know they all pretty much have adjustments. Just too many options is the real problem. thanks for the replay.
Do you have the review of the new Gran Turismo 7 game on PS5? Just asking for a friend...
Funny how all machines except R3 and Concept2 have much lower split times. I row a 1:54 2000 (I’m 60) and on the water rower I was at 1:41
Guess which machine my coach looks at?
It is odd huh! Matrix I would say actually has a bit higher of split times!
The sunny fitness?
Indoor rower model E's best machine. I think.
it is now used by player. actually.
It is a great machine!
I started shopping for a rower just before COVID shut it all down and now there's almost zero chance of getting a Concept 2 before July. I don't want to wait that long. What's your 2nd favorite rower?
Oh no I'm sorry to hear that :( WaterRower is a good alternative!
concept 2 is worth waiting for, it comes apart, easy to move. I take mine outside for sunshine rowing. Luckily I got mine in 2019. Just wait
Very interesting! I'll have to check it out!
Hahaha I have gotten that reference too many times!
But what about the monitor/console? Matrix does not seem to have same ability to set up workouts or capture details about interval details, memory storage of workouts?
I looked up the price of the Matrix and that ended the contest for me :) It costs $1,100 more.
The answer is Rowperfect
I'll have to check it out!
Think the current C2 is loud? Go find a Model B! That sucker sounded like a jet engine!

Is there some reason you don't put the handle of the Concept in the provided holder? It's drivin' me nuts!
It actually tends to wear out the chain more! Setting it up to the machine keeps the chain healthier for longer - plus I am 6'8" and have the reach to put it all the way back!

How did you not compare that the C2 requires maintenance on the chain and the Matrix requires no maintenance?
The Matrix does actually require maintenance! I am not fully versed in the maintenance for both so decided not to talk about it!
I’m trying to pay off debts, and can only afford to spend $500 for the Schwinn Crewmaster (or something similar). Do you think the Crewmaster is good enough to get started on while I work on saving up for a Concept2?
I haven't tried it, but I'll see if I can get my hands on it!
Dont do it... just save for the concept2.. I tried a few different ones and there is no comparison...concept 2 rocks
I am curious to see how the Schwinn Crewmaster Rower would stack up against concept 2?
You don’t need to spend a lot of money to get a quality gym like experience. It may not have the fancy digital screens but just put on a tv and go for a row.
I've used both and can't stand rowing on the Matrix. When using the Matrix I really missed the woosh sound of the Concept2
But maybe your neighbors don't miss the whoosh sound 🤣🤣
but which is used by every national team. that’s right the concept
Yup!
Not really... The entire Olympic Dutch team uses RP3s along with several other professional rowing clubs
I got an echelon rower
concept2. end of argument
Well that settles it!
Technogym skillrow beats both hands down, unfortunately it costs more than both these rowing machines put together.
I'll have to give it a try!
Tecnogym is like Hammer Strength and costs 6000 dollars. Incomparable with these objects
Never seen a matrix rower in a British rowing club. On the other hand the concept is everywhere, every club has a long bank of machines as they are the preferred option for water towers.
I am not sure if Matrix has rowing machines internationally or not.. interesting!
so where are the waterrowers?
Can someone post a link to part 2 , I can’t find it ?
Hey Casey - part 2 is still in the works!
Nice -- I look forward to it! Agree so far with your assessment, but the magnet resistance on the matrix feels unnatural / less fluid to me.
Price?
@Training Tall ... Will you do a comparison between *Dynamic* (Oartec Dx, RowPerfect/RP3) versus *Static* (Concept2) rowers? And no, Concept2's verison of the dynamic is supposedly not even remotely the same as the Oartec or the RowPerfect. Dynamic rowers are supposed to be easier on the lower back, emphasis on leg drive and reinforces proper technique with every single stroke.
As soon as I can get my hands on other rowing machines, I will make comparison videos for them! Thanks for the info!
Which do you recommend for the taller rower
At 6'8" I can actually hit the back end of the Concept 2 but on the Matrix there is extra room for if you are even taller!
You can order a Concept2 with an extra long rail: www.concept2.com/indoor-rowers/compare
Thanks for sharing, Geoff! Didn't even realize that!
A heavyweight empacher 1x rowing shell, obviously
Not even close...concept 2 is better
Does the Matrix maintain online performance data? I am motivated by peer group competition, so I am afraid that the Concept 2's data (and erg competitions) are too valuable to give up. Otherwise, the Matrix might be better for me.
If you want to peer group competition, C2 is really the only option!
Thanks that just clarified everything for me.
Has anyone else had this silly issue?
pretty stupid question lol whats better for weight loss? or is it the same
Hey Aaron! It's gonna be the same for both, pretty much! It all depends on how frequent you're exercising and keeping control of eating habits!
Anyone have any feedback on the Life Core R100 if you can get it at half the price of the Concept 2?
Do you have a review of the Horizon 6 rower?
What about the Technogym Skillrow??
The best way is a used Tecnogym rowing machine
I need to try it soon!
Why would you ever use anything other than a concept 2? It’s what they use at international level competition and it’s also what real rowers use. The noise is most similar to real rowing along with the foot plates and the seat.
also cheaper and easier to fix no doubt ,their websites replacement parts nearly worldwide shipping and the parts cost as much as the production only ,i bet this matrix company would charge u an arm and a leg for a bolt to be shipped to you
remember you can buy diferent seat-options for concept 2.....
