    Employees at the Cambridge Union,
Please don't be cowards, post the clip of the good taste debate.
    Yours sincerely,
A former university alumnus and member of the union.

Th debate topic is dumb. One can be stoic and hedonist at different times. Human existence can't be explained in a singular Ideology.

With regards to your debate this morning (for which the comments have been subjectively turned off...) I would like to chime in as seems to be my RUclips-given right to do so (or is that my British right? Or a right as derived from the ((now rejected)) convention of human rights?).
    1. Acknowledgement should not be confused with embarrassment.
    2. Embarrassment cannot be inflicted upon any human. Much like love, it cannot be prescribed. We either feel it or not.
    3. What ignorance to refer to swathes of the British public's ancestors (or recent family members such as parents and grandparents) as those complicit in acts of imperialism, segregation, putrid foreign policy, the list is endless. We are simply not all of families who came from these backgrounds. Am I to be ashamed of the fact my decendents shared planet earth with imperialists? That they shared these Isles, the same oxygen..?
    4. Other nations have actually done a better job in some respects, to acknowledging their pasts. This is reflected in their state education. It's no wonder we've become to extreme in our divisions, given British education is teaching next to nothing about our past wrongdoings. We also fail to teach adequate history on the atrocities in Russia, or Spain, or Italy. If i remember my own education, I was taught the Homefront, some things about Nazi Germany, and that's it. Other countries have done a better job to stave off collective amnesia (Spain is perhaps a questionable example). This does not mean they're embarrassed. It just means they've been educated.
    5. Whether you are referring to modern day Britain or the Britain of the past, it is irrelevant. You should never feel responsible for the actions of others, only your response to them. And in doing so, we must also recognise the very real even if regretful limitations to what we can actually do in the way of righting others' wrongs. We are not superhumans.
    6. The young chap who commented some 30 minutes before the end who essentially stated we should be mindful of how we act as INDIVIDUALS and not sideline those who feel 'quasi British' really hit the nail on the head for me.
    7. With regards to the last speech, yes we may possibly have to remained a more modern definition of British. However, in recognising the magnitude of this task, we can only assume that a blanket, modern meaning of 'Britishness' is yet to be invented and therefore currently, does not exist.
As a Scottish born woman to half Scottish (some English) and half Irish family, I can say that being told I should consider myself British in order to escape the 'small minded nationalist' branding, this all feels so futile and indulgent on certain speakers' part. Which flag waving and group chanting is considered worse? Should I heed those who want to welcome me into the British bubble of forward-thinking, creative culturalists or those who reject me for my differences? Or my stance on Irish peace processes? Should I respect with the utmost sincerity an institution like Cambridge supposedly at the forefront of what we hold dear not just in the UK but the western world, which claims to stand for free speech (as a university, should stand for FACT not feelings) and turn to such debates for intellectual enlightenment? How can I, when there is such pandering, walking on eggshells, disregard for those invited to speak (Mr Corbyn would have fared better on Question Time it would seem!)?
What am I supposed to feel part of? If I choose to actively participate (to the extent that it is voluntary, as I have not been able to opt out of my sensational blue passport) then what am I actually signing up for? What club is this that you don't want us to leave? I have no idea where we'd be if we left, but I have no flipping clue where on earth I am. Anyone care to shed some light...?
Ps. Where is the video recording of the 'good v bad taste debate?'. I'm not fond of this censorship and eliminating of the past.

Thought this would be quite fun debate. How wrong I was. Over the top satire and some very bad rhetoric! Thought the only ones worth listening to is the lady who said we're all hedonistic and Stoic on certain levels, and guy who had a tough family upbringing. Who wasn't from the Uni. I'm not a fan of him either but absolutely disgusting what they said about Jacob Reese smog. Has these students not learnt anything about how to communicate in the real world. Especially when it comes to debates. Coming off the back of the Angela Raynor incident???. Seems to me that a lot of students/ young people mistake liberalism for Libertarianism. You cant just say anything without consequence! Has anyone heard of freedom of speech but with responsibility??? 🤷. This was very bad PR for Cambridge University! Most of these people are dripping in Egoistical Narcissistic Hubris! I will be unsubscribing
