"And I thought to myself...there is one I could follow. There is one I could call king."
I would have loved to have seen him as king under the mountain. A trademark of a good king is one who pushes beyond his flaws and does what others fear to do.
His final moments with Bilbo are one of my favorite moments in all literature. Never too late to make right and say goodbye.
In an hour of desperation he proved himself worthy of his birthright. In his death he understood that which was more precious than silver and gold
Thorin spent his whole life in the service of his dwarven people. Reclaiming Erebor from Smaug was his greatest achievement. So lies Thorin Oakenshield, King Under the Mountain, with the Arkenstone on his chest and Orcrist at his side. It bothered me they portrayed him so much younger in the movies from his true age.
Yeah it bothered me too. I felt really dumb when i found out thorin was older than balin
Everything about those movies bothered me lol
It bothered me that they made Thorin (as well as Fili and Kili) good looking, age or not. The Dwarves of Tolkien's world are hardy, tough, and noted for NOT being "eye candy". Gimli is what pretty much every dwarf should look like.
Here lies Thorin Oakenshield, son of Thrain, son of Thror, lord of Erebor and King Under the Mountain
It’s understandable that he looked young. They needed a young good looking lead. If you look at the other dwarfs the make up artists used heavy prosthetics to make them look ugly and gross and they wanted Thorin to contrast that by being the leader. Yeah it’s not accurate to the book but it made sense cinematically.
For all The Hobbit movies got wrong, the casting of Thorin was perfect.
I agree, Richard Armitage, had great presence. Although, I missed him not having a white beard like in the books
@@Thentherewasbim I prefer the ending of the movie better than the book. Thorin in the movie had a staple to his name by killing Azog, whereas in the book he was totally nerfed (he failed to kill any major enemy to establish himself as a great warrior)
Just finished reading The Hobbit yesterday and wow…pretty big character difference between Thorin from the films and the book!
Another amazing video on one of my favorite characters ever written into life.
"far over, the Misty Mountains cold.
through dungeons deep, and caverns old....
I care not, I love the first "Hobbit" film .
Especially the first hour, extended cut of course.
Me too. The Hobbit films are actually amazing fantasy films. Of course, they just don't hold up well when compared to the masterpiece that the LotR trilogy was, but then again that trilogy had set the benchmark way too high.
Same. Id go sar far to say I love the first hobbit film just a hair off a dwarven beard more than the lotr trilogy
@@melvinsamson5684 that’s what I always say! Really good movies, just not good “The Hobbit” adaptations. Just a really good time hanging around in Middle-earth again.
Totally! I love the Hobbit films. Heck, AUJ is probably one of my favorite films in general. (And I agree, the first hour is pure magic.) So much I could gush about, but I won't. 😆
I loved The Hobbit films, I think because they added to the story rather than diminishing it, as the LOTR trilogy necessarily did. And yes, the first hour of AUJ is my very favorite part.
Kili: I will not hide behind a wall of stone while others fight OUR BATTLES FOR US! It is not in my blood Thorin.
Thorin Oakenshield: No, it is not. We are sons of Durin. And Durin Folk do not flee from a fight.
Thorin Oakenshield: I have no right to ask this of any of you. Will you follow me, one last time?
Another great video Yoystan! Thorin is such a great character sometimes a little underrated. Just like Boromir, Thorin in the end found his redemption by setting aside his bias and differences and came to aid the men and elves along with Dain Ironfoot to defeat the Orcs in BOFA.
Thorin is such a great character. Great video as always!
Perfect video to listen to while doing laundry. Thanks for making a chore fun
I Really Didn't Want Him To Die In The Hobbit Trilogy, It Made Me Cry.
One of my favorite characters behind Feanor and Turin! Keep up the great work brother!
There indeed lay Thorin Oakenshield, wounded with many wounds...He looked up as Bilbo came beside him.
"Farewell, good thief," he said. "I go now to the halls of waiting to sit beside my fathers, until the world is renewed. Since I leave now all gold and silver, and go where it is of little worth, I wish to part in friendship from you, and I would take back my words and deeds at the Gate."
Bilbo knelt on one knee filled with sorrow. "Farewell, King under the Mountain!" he said. "This is a bitter adventure, if it must end so; and not a mountain of gold can amend it. Yet I am glad that I have shared in your perils - that has been more than any Baggins deserves."
"No!" said Thorin. "There is more in you of good than you know, child of the kindly West. Some courage and some wisdom, blended in measure. If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world. But sad or merry, I must leave it now. Farewell!"
Then Bilbo turned away, and he went by himself, and sat alone wrapped in a blanket, and, whether you believe it or not, he wept until his eyes were red and his voice was hoarse.
"The Hobbit, Chapter 18, The Return Journey", by JRRT
Rest in peace, Thorin Oakenshield. King Under the Mountain. Truly your deeds and valor made Aule proud.
The King under the Mountain
Was a prince when the dragon came
He swore up and down
That all their gold he would again reclaim
With Gandalf the Grey
And with 13 of his kin
They headed off to the western way
To a Hobbit hole called Bag End
In the Shire and its rolling hills
They recruited their "robber" Bilbo
They sang and danced against the hobbit's wills
But their robber was very reluctant to go
In the Morning Gandalf pushed the hobbit out
With nothing on his back, not even his hankerchief
"Go with Thoran's company!" was the wizard's shout
He ran to the King over grass, path, and fallen leaf
Thoran doubted his newest comrade
But hopped he would earn his keep
Off they went to the dragon's mountain pad
With a clammer of Dwarf boots and hobbit's hairy feet
Though Trolls' hungry attack
To their cave with treasures within
There on the trolls wall rack
Were three swords forged in Gondolin
Orcrist the beater, Glamdring the foe-hammer,
and the mighty Sting
Thoran Oakenshiled, Gandalf mithrandir,
and Bildo the halfling
They took ownership of the Kingly swords
So they could see battle once more
Slaying many Goblin hoards
In their mountain town of lore
Meeting Beorn the skin-changing man
And going into Dark Mirkwood
Fighting off spiders though forested land
Where Thoran shot at a white deer where it stood
Thoran and company were taken by forest elves
And imprisoned by their king's orders
They were soon freed from their jails
And escaped though the kingdom's cellars
Riding inside wooden barrels
They flowed down the forest river
Anduin soon welcomed the old Mountain dwellers
But they were wet and all a shiver
To Lake Town they soon arrived
And announced themselves to the Lake's Master
For Esgaroth they wanted again alive
To create once again the great golden river
Thoran headed off again
To his home of Erebor
With map and key in hand
To find the hidden door
Sending the robber inside
To see if Old Smaug still guarded the gold
It was Thoran's pride
That forced BIlbo to be so bold
With Goblet in hand
Stealing it from under the dragon's nose
BIlbo felt a shaking of the land
As the dragon's wrath soon rose
With the secret door now destroyed
The dwarves had nowhere else to go
The company thought they were being toyed
But Thoran ordered them to go below
Into the treasure horde of Thoror
Thoran searched for the Arkenstone
His madness drove him to war
If it was stolen he would not condone
The Elves soon came
Followed closely by the men of the lake
Smaug's flames Laketown did mame
Bard with black arrow brought down the mighty drake
They demanded a fair share
Of the gold from within
But Thoran though it unfair
And would not give in
Dane soon arrived
And made war with the Elves
But Orcs with surprise
Attacked them all from the hills
Bolg as their leader
Slew many that day
But Beorn the skin-changer
With his life he made Bolg pay
Thoran and his nephews
Sadly did not survive
With his last breath he gave Bilbo news
For actions earlier he did apologize
And so ended the life of this brave King
Whose reign was all but too short
Praises and stories they all did sing
His story was of the best sort
Orcrist and the Arkenstone
They laid upon his chest
Dain as King stood alone
But he knew Thoran was the best.
There is One who I could follow, there Is One I could call MEN OF THE WEST!!!!!!!! Another great video!!!!!
He was a true Warrior King full of longing to save Erebor the ancient Kingdom under the lonely mountain the Stronghold of the longbereds Dwarves and to make sure that as he lives that the deaths of his grandfather Thror and father Thain and the others weren't in vain and to reclaim their home from Smaug the Great fire drake amazing video as always 💓can't wait for the next one
Confounded All Yoyston!
I just packed a fresh bowl of longbottom leaf and loaded up a rather entertaining zombie apoc fps.....now my Zed smiting session must wait.
Longbottom leaf needs its own form in the real world just like you can buy butterbeer from Harry Potter in the real world now
Does anyone else see a similarity between Thorin and Boromir? They are both great warrior leaders defending their people through hardship. Both of whom end up dying in battle as a result of succumbing to dark influences. Both of which are redeemed in their last moments.
These pictures make dwarves look like Olympic bodybuilders, it’s so cool
When are we getting a “what if Yoystan found the One Ring” video?
🤣🤣
Or his cat!
@@Valdagast yes!
Great video, as always. Love these Epic Character Histories!😊While I did like the casting in The Hobbit, those who've only seen the films wouldn't realise that Thorin was actually supposed to be the oldest of his company by some measure. Balin is depicted as an older, mentor figure, though in the book he is in fact seventeen years younger than Thorin. Dain Ironfoot, who would succeed Thorin as King of Erebor, was twenty-one years younger. But hey, who didn't like seeing Billy Connolly cracking skulls with a massive hammer? 😁
I like to think that Gandalf was in the Prancing Pony, losing his mind about how he’s supposed to protect the realms of the free when when the elves were aging and the Dwarves kept losing holds.
But then Thorin walks in an Gandalf can tell by his brooding that he’s a dwarf king with a grudge.
Gandalf was worried about the growing darkness in Middle Earth, and about the terrifying prospect of Smaug waking from sleep and laying waste to all the lands around him.
A beautiful video, and an awe-inspiring one. Thanks for this magnificent video, it makes me want to better ones and also read-more my friend, I shall come back to this one time and again! Truly yours is the finest lore-channel around. As you have made me love Thorin all the more than before, as you have made him seem all the wiser, goodlier and yet the more tragic. Imagine the sort of king he might have been, had he lived past his last moments with that last realisation in his heart.
BARUK KHAZAD! KHAZAD AI‐MENU! Keep up the great work Mellon
One small, but important question that I've never considered before: how would the story have been different if Frerin, Thorin's brother, had not died at Azanulbizar?
Whenever i see a lotr video pop up, i always think "i could swear i watched this one already", but then i watch it anyway.
Well done Yoystan nice video
I truly enjoyed this. Thank you!
I just bought a second copy of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings for my car, I drive a lot so usually I am waiting in my car for half an hour between trips. Started re-reading the Hobbit today.
awesome vid Yoystan enjoyed it
Great video, love all the concept art ;)
I think the one thing that Thorin would say to me here and now is this"go live your life in love and in peace your journey has begun but mine has ended. You will do great things among your friends but promise me this keep fighting for peace."
Criminy chrystler, Yoystan Yes. When I see this video I say “Bless”. His voice fills my home, his rumble, my heart, it takes me right back to the very start. That first video I watched, I couldn’t believe, the mere glory I saw, perfect as sugar through a sieve. XO
Excellent video Master Yoystan! A what if video "What if the Fellowship travelled by boat from the Grey Havens to Pelagir?"
Cant even argue hypoteticals online anymore without people freaking out.
I asked this on another video and thought I would ask again, since I'm not sure when the other video was released. Thank you, Yoystan.
I have a question, but I don't know if there is an answer. Considering Faramir brought it up in The Two Towers. Were the men of the East always evil or did Sauron make them that way? My eyesight is poorer now, and even if I had the books, I wouldn't be able to read them. That's a question I've always wondered about. Along with the question, was the land clear for the Numenorians, or were there people like the Native Americans who had to give up their homelands? Please answer if you can. Thank You!
Finally you listened to my recommendation to make a Thorin Oakenshield epic character history THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁 PS,THORIN OAKENSHIELD BEST CHARACTER IN THE LEGENDARIUM
What if the Witch king was a fallen Maia? Specifically, one of the blue wizards that fell to Saurons corruption and killed his fellow wizard as a test of loyalty.
Nice idea, but I don't think that the chronology works out. Anyway, we're told that they're men.
@@qwertyTRiG We hear that they at least visited Middle Earth during the second age, when the nazgul were made, and the Istari came in the form of old men. Plus, it would explain why he is the chief of the Nazgul and how he is Saurons most powerful servant.
It would also shed some light on the Witch kings the the blue wizards history, and how the blue wizards failed, with one becoming the chief nazgul and the other being murdered by him.

Nah, they are men. And all the maiar who follow Morgoth become Balrog, not ringwraith and i doubt Sauron can turn Maiar into Ringwraith with only Ring of Men.
@@andrewrestu4982 I agree, but I remind you that the Nine, like all the rings from Eregion, was made for Elves, not for Men.
You should do a master of lake-town and it’s history. A couple people in my LOtR FB group I’m in had some questions about him and history.
Such a great character and story, really is a shame the funders of the Hobbit movies didn't pay heed to Thorin's wise words to Bilbo..
I love Thorin Oakenshield xx
All sorrow fail and sadness at the mountain kings return
A very important Dwarf, with a blue hood and a silver tassel 👀
"If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world."
You know, I kind of don't like this quote. Who doesn't like food and cheer and song? The problem is, unlike the Baggins family, most of us have to work for a living. Trust me, if people were providing me a nice house and all the food and entertainment I want, I wouldn't care about money either. But unfortunately, most people have to scramble for every penny we can get our grubby little hands on just to get by. Tolkein on the other hand was the son of a wealthy banker, grew up with servants, and then got a job in academia, about as far removed from the real world as you can get. Maybe we had followed the Gamgee family, they'd understand the value of a coin a little better.
Interesting perspective, I see where you’re coming from. I always read the quote as a critique of those who would do anything for more money, even if they already have enough. It’s said by Thorin in reference to his seduction by the dragon’s gold. If anything, I saw it as a critique of the ultra-rich.
Please don’t read this with any form of patronization, I mean it sincerely. I appreciate and respect your perspective here.
The key part of the statement is HOARDED GOLD. He's not saying you shouldn't appreciate coin you manage to earn to provide for living. He is bringing to light people like Ebenezer Scrooge or the typical billionaire that values his money over his fellow humans on earth. It's actually pretty obvious what the statement means when you factor in that the Dwarves in Tolkien's world are generally seen as greedy and grasping.
Rock and stone!
Greetings, Loremaster, have a middle earth day. (You can if you want to)
TO THE KING! TOO THE KIIIING!
I went on a quest with Thorin to obtain the Star of Africa, a 29.33 carat diamond, which was set in Queen Elizabeth II's Scepter. I handed the stone off to Henry without doubting how it would be set. Prince Philip had it cut. Henry is the Queen's Consort. Prince Philip paid DeBeer's for the stone.
This Adrian Delatour is in every video..every single one of them.
I named my second son Thoryn like a gangster
Everttime life gets boring or hard i ckme back to middle earth...RIP tolkien❤
In many respects, Thorin is like a precursor to Scrooge McDuck even though Thorin predated Scrooge by at least 10 years. I see many striking parallels between the two. For example, both came from prominent families that fell on hard times, both have quite a temper, both are good fighters in spite of their old ages, both didn't father any offspring, but have two heirs from their sisters (Fili and Kili from Dis and Donald and Della from Hortense McDuck), both reclaim their families' long-forgotten gold, both deal with excessive greed sitting upon a vast treasure horde, and both treasure a small object precious to them (the Arkenstone for Thorin, and Scrooge with his Number One Dime).
A king great king is never remembered by his people for the richest they bring or the lands they ruled but by the Deeds they did for there people and thorin oakenshield well always be remembered
My second favorite dwarf. The first being Gimli.
Thorin was played so well by Richard, it is such a shame the script was so bad 🤔
"Open the letterbox for the vindaloo..."
Dave Lister wants to know your location.
Thorin, Dain, Gimli or etc, who would you love to have if you had to have one a great drawf in your company?!!!
Is it Dwarf week or Matt and you preparing for Gimli coming?!!! So many Dwarven Videos!!!
Thanks Mellon for Thorin's ECH, Until the video *Updated* Khuzdul...Marion Baggins Out!!!
I prefer the ending of the movie better than the book. Thorin in the movie had a staple to his name by killing Azog, whereas in the book he was totally nerfed (he failed to kill any major enemy to establish himself as a great warrior)
I have allways wonderd about the greednes or sickness of Thorin at the end of the Hobbit. As we know the kings of durin's folk all had this but it was because of the dwarven rings and we know that Thorin didn't have one so could it have been the pressence of the one ring that caused the sickness.
The Rings of Power work by amplifying what is already inside their wielders: and in the case of the Seven, also twist it towards evil ends. All dwarves desire wealth: the rings merely turn that appreciation into greed. However, one does not need a Ring of Power to become twisted. Suddenly coming into wealth and power after a lifetime of exile and hardship: that would mess with anyone’s head. No supernatural forces required. Often the greediest people in real life are those who grew up poor. Whereas those who have always had money, often don’t value their wealth very much.
@@golwenlothlindelgot it and very good answer
Dragon sickness caused by Smaug horsing the gold for soo long. Gandalf says so somewhere in the book.
Still not a fan how Peter Jackson pictured Thorin as some kind of 'sexy' dwarf who doesn't even remotely look like the others
idk if that was Jackson’s doing. Who hired the casting director? him or del Toro?
Yeah, I wasn’t much of a fan of the dwarves in the hobbit trilogy, way too comedic.. it was always going to be hard giving 13 their own identity but I just thought the actors were too young, especially Kili and Fili, they looked like they were out of a middle-earth fashion shoot 🤣
Hobbit was a great kids book. Extremely weak as an adult fantasy novel. I fear so much analysis and review shows up the stark weaknesses and poor writing of the book. I wish it was left alone to be simply an enjoyable book for early teenage boys as it was designed for
????
The Hobbit isn’t any more poorly written than LotR is. Granted, Tolkien’s prose writing isn’t fantastic by any means. However, his characters are incredibly nuanced, his worldbuilding excellent and his narratives well structured. The Hobbit is no exception to this, and this analysis illuminates that fact. A fact generally overlooked because of The Hobbit’s lighter tone. Tolkien hated the idea that writing for children shouldn’t be considered sophisticated enough for analysis. So no, The Hobbit absolutely should be analyzed: and it absolutely does stand up to analysis.
Why use the Hobbit film portrayal? Completely inaccurate from the book.
Guy loves to stretch those R's it's really annoying.
