The Chicago public housing was never "paradise." Those blocks were built with the worst materials, and within a few years the doorknobs were coming off, wires were burning out, pipes were leaking, elevators got stuck, garbage chutes were clogged with trash eight stories high, the rats infested, the windows wouldn't close, the burned-out lightbulbs in the stairwells were never replaced.
Worst of all, it crammed the Black vote into a single district.

When you're raised in what I call a "white bubble" (all your family, most of the people you associate with and you are white) there are things you don't understand about people of color and their lived experiences. I happened to grow up in a white bubble and it wasn't until later that I could recognize that racism is still alive and well. My boyfriend (who's black) has graciously told me how he's been followed in stores, been treated differently, and how he wouldn't feel welcome living in certain neighborhoods. Growing up, you're taught that racism is in the past and is no longer relevant, but when your well-funded suburban elementary school is 95% white, you know the effects of institutionalized racism are still felt.

I think it's more about the concentration of poverty leading to economic escape routes, such as gangs and drug trafficking. Poverty affected neighborhoods are more likely to develop gangs, as well, due to racially-intertwined police aversion -- aka having a form of protection that won't get you killed or arrested because of your race. Those same protections and escape routes put in place though become the very problem they worked to solve.

The answer lies in integrating wealthy neighborhoods rather than dumping money into sectioned off, new housing projects that will just concentrate poverty and result in failed missions like Cabrini-Green.

It should not matter what part of the city one is in. Take pride. Clean the place up. Stop the violence. An old saying goes, "wherever you go there you are." Point is by moving somewhere else, the same problems will follow. It is an inside job and starts with the man/person in the mirror.

My family got wrapped into the property scams in the 1990s. They sold us a house in the "dying suburbs" of Dolton, Harvey, and Calumet City at an inflated price. We were so eager to leave the city that my family didn't even realize the Mills and factories had closed in these neighborhoods, taking the good jobs that made these suburbs thrive with them. When the jobs closed, the White people ran. I slowly saw the community change from White, mixed, then all Black. With few job options, other than the Metra for commuting, Black people just brought the crime to the Suburbs. Some people argue that Dolton is worse than living in Chicago.

You missed the point of the video. The African-American community is stuck in low-income housing with low-income schools, while the White community generally prospers in the high-income areas. You see the inequality here, right? We need to work to end the effects of redlining. This is about giving whites and blacks the same opportunity to succeed, not forcing integration. Once we reach equality, integration will naturally occur.

You can’t blame segregation for the cities violence in black communities. Englewood was once the second largest commercial district in the city and an example of economic growth in the black community. It was majority black and majority middle class. This neighborhood fell apart so fast it was impossible to get out for many families and today it is the most violent neighborhood in the city. The jobs left and the family unit was gonna so all that was left was violence and drugs. There was no hope only fear. It’s the culture and economics that killed this neighborhood not the segregation.

If we are to honest it is the result of white hostility. The federal and state government, organizations like HOLC, MPHC, and University of Chicago, Redevelopment Act, Illinois Urban Community Conservation act, Federal Housing Act, banks and other mortgage lenders collectively working together in order to satiate white peoples desire to escape “inharmonious racial groups” yet more importantly stuffing the ruling class’s predatory pockets.

My mother lived near Chicago. In the 1930's, her father took her to the train station. She saw a lot of black people getting off the train, dressed shabbily. The governor of Mississippi was giving any black person who wanted it, a free one-way ride to Chicago. These people were maybe 2 generations out of slavery, with elderly relatives that remembered slavery. And they went to South Chicago. Housing projects were segregated by race, then. Chicago was unsafe in the 1930's; my mother showed us the "Chicago grip", taking the purse strap over the shoulder, holding the purse tightly under the arm. One always dressed up to go to the city; white gloves were common, then. Her father worked for Chemical Bank, for many years. We went to the Field museum in 1975, it was great.

The problem with videos like this is that they act as if the US is solely a Black/White country and do not measure the integration that is taking place in the suburbs especially between whites, Hispanics, and Asians; nor do they mention the slow and steady movement of the Hispanic population (in Chicago, mostly Mexican) into historically Black communities.

Gang activity is never acknowledged as the main reason this happens. There is no effort to pull kids from the cycle proactively by investigating who is preying on kids. Being in a gang should be illegal by itself and so should recruiting. The adults should be actively trying to put these gang members in jail for premeditation.

One thing more Black- Americans need to utilize more are rotating credit groups. Asians are known for using them to raise money for businesses and other things. Caribbean Blacks do this also. They call them susu loans. If more of us Black-Americans did this we could use susus as an alternative to banks for raising money for various things.

I cannot find the pbs documentary about public housing. The area of Kenwood Hydepark was very much integrated Blacks, Jews, Asians. Most Jews owned the cold water flats(apartments) in Chicago but Stateway was built to bring Jews out of the deteriorating and dilapidated flats that the still own and rented to blacks.
So that leg up of owning property near by and collecting rent while in new high rises on State St then when enough money was made the Chicago Jewish population migrated to Roger Park and created a booming north suburban called Skokie.
Once they moved out and move black from the lakefront to State the hope that blacks would follow the same route as Jews was expected but how when they didn’t own property and many black men faced employment inequality which housing allowed them to abandon families of wives and children.
