You forgot to install the two half-moon pieces and their surrounding washer!
Also, aren't you supposed to use red loctite on that nut, and stake it into the slots on the shaft??

The other "shim you didn't know what it was for. That is to another kit and the are 2 half moon washer that fit inside of it and around the shaft. They are probably in your main case of the transmission.

Someone previously rebuilt that nv4500 and tried to make it bulletproof...and unfortunately, as you can tell, it didn’t work. It had a fully splined main shaft and gear retainer (that failed) along with a cast iron tail housing. The reason fifth gear fails is because of a lack of support, even with a “fully splined” main shaft. The only real fix is a shaft, gear, nut, and retaining system developed by torque king that unfortunately stopped being produced in 2011 and the last complete kit sold in 2012. If it hasn’t come apart yet, and IT WILL, you might try buying a new nut and/or borrowing the proper spanner, torquing the nut to spec and welding the nut to the gear, not the nut to the shaft. This could give the gear the support needed so it stops walking on the shaft which will eventually lead it backing off. FYI, you got damn lucky that the retainer didn’t cause massive damage when it failed, which is usually the case.

I've got a 96 Cummins 4x that the 5th gear dropped off of. I drove it home about 15 miles using 1-4. Are you familiar enough with these transmissions to theorize how likely it is I can just fix the 5th gear and be good? I'm trying to decide whether to try this fix with the trans in the truck or just order a whole new transmission.

@@MillenniumWright What did you end up doing? I had the same thing happen to my '98. Driving on the highway and all of the sudden lost power. Shifted to 4th and was able to get to the next exit going 60 max. Trying to decide whether to do this myself or take to a shop.

@@matthewbenson7143 I sold the truck and got an '08 5500. I'd rather have the 5.9 all mechanical motor than the 6.7 with all its computers but I can swap one in later. Or just get used to electronics on my motor. It has a G56 and there are plenty of those around for future years, plus the rest of the truck is 10 times better than the 1 ton was.

Will the same parts work on a 2wd...?

I saw another video from a wise man that said that the washer/shim you put in before the nut could eventually fall off and become shrapnel ? What do you think of that.

Yeah it definitely could. When I took the old nut off I found pieces of the previous shims at the bottom of the cover. Id think if they'd break off it would just settle to to bottom and shouldn't go through the system. But I guess you never know

What Valvoline oil did you use? Is it working well? How long have you been using it?

Valvoline is the wrong stuff to use!
The NV4500 factory fill was Mopar Synthetic Manual Transmission Fluid SAE 75W85 GL4 Part# 4874459 for Dodge applications or AC Delco Synthetic Manual Transmission Fluid SAE 75W85 GL4 Part# 12346190 for GM applications. Both the Mopar and GM fluids are repackaged Castrol Syntorq 75W85 GL4
