Excellent video probably one of the best tutorials I've seen on RUclips on any given subject. Unfortunately my transmission appears to be a rebuilt 2006 47RHM. (4 Gears, 7 Capacity Rating, Rearwheel Drive, Hydraulic control, MUTT!). But with the help of your video thank you guys I'm going to make a checklist so I can at least figure out what components are what year and that way I can begin fixing it (somebody put thumb tacks in it my transmission fill line!!)
You guys are badass, if I had more money I would ship my truck out there. I really do like the power but, I can not do it with out the mileage. Maybe 400 with at least 20mpg. Could I do that? It's a2001 short four wheel drive with the 47re and maybe 353 or 354 gears. 330,000 miles. I really like it. I adjusted the valves for the first time at a little over 300,000 and none of them were more than 5 thousandths out. What can I do a little at the time? Great info, maybe in the future or when you do converter 101, talk about adding some stall speed to help with spool up time in a 500 to 700hp daily driver, and please if you dont agree with that theory, why, you guys do a great job with all your videos.
I have 47rh, definitely sure, yet I just recently was driving and slowly but surely, the trans started to NOT upshift to the point that it's not moving from first to second! It was driving fine, then it just started kicking out of gear on street speed 40 and lower also my speedometer stopped showing the proper speed. Question is ....Is it the converter ? It goes in gear when it wants but no lock up and does reverse but tends to grip then slip.
Ok so I have a 2004 early 305 hp 4 wheel drive is it a 47 or a 48 from the factory. I'm planning to biuld it to your 650 rhwp. Kit and am going to need to know it know has 120k on it hard towing still in good shape running 35" tires. 3:73 gears pretty tall gears but right were it likes to tow. I have a 2005 diesel ram in the shop, the customer put a older transmission in it and the plugs won’t work. They need to smog it for California. What can I do to get rid of the codes to smog ? Will the new sensors fit? Do i need to change the harness and ecm?
I'm that 'hot rodder' guy that didn't want to go manual valve body on a 47re. got a stock computer, but not entirely sure which signal is the one that allows 123 shifts. Any feedback is appreciated. All 8pins connected, but not VSS or TV cable yet. Lockup and OD are working on switches, but goint to install a pot switch for lockup.

You left out the quickest and absolute surest way of telling the two wheel drive 47 from the 48re tail housing. If you don't have the two side-by-side to compare and don't have all the differences in memory the quickest way to tell without having side-by-side comparisons would be the 48re is lacking a mounting point at the tail shaft section of the transmission. The 47th clearly have bosses with screw holes readily available to add a mount to that location

And my mechanic checked the pcm and he said it's working fine!!! But my truck still not charge gears!!! There is any other computer under the dash there i have to replace!!!
I havge a 1999 ram 2500 with the 24v. The trans bell housing code says 238-3. All of the plugs point to a 47re but the number code being 238-3 confused me. I guess my question is with that number and the plugs do you think i have a 47re?

Hi to you guy's, i have a 88 fifth avenue whit a 318 2.84 rear, the rpm is hi at hwy speed, i like to put an overdrive trany, i can have a 092-2 that come from d250 1993, you talk about a full hydrolic valve body ,is there a lock up tork for this trany, can you help me, thank's.
4 (# of gears), 7/8 (arbitrary scale "strength factor"), R (Rear wheel drive, the 4x4 are still rear wheel drive as opposed to horizontally mounted front wheel drive transmissions), H (Hydraulically shifted), E (Electronically shifted)
No problem, only difference is the TV lever shaft protrudes up out of the transmission about 1/2" more, your factory TV lever will still attach and work fine. The 04.5 thru early 07 have a TTVA motor in-lieu of the TV cable and lever so the factory made the TV shaft a half inch longer to better integrate with the external TTVA motor assembly. 100% direct swap reverse compatible back to 2003 and 2004 models.
I've got a 1991 Dodge w-250 and trying to identify what transmission it is. Its got the 5.9L 12v cummins in it. Was thinking it might be a TF727 is that possible.

All you have to do is open up the hood: If your yellow dipstick handle is on the right side of your engine (the driver's side), you're likely looking at a vehicle with an Aisin transmission. If your dipstick is just to the left of your engine, you're most likely dealing with the 68RFE.

Austin Doud the 4L80e is a pretty good transmission, even built to hold high HP it’s the torque that kills them quick, and why they don’t hold up to diesel applications. GM actually put some 4L80’s behind early duramaxes in the express vans.

It has the long tail housing of a 47rh, the pre-98 neutral safety switch and the 3 pin control plug for the value body, but the bell housing is stamped 238-1. Do I have the rarest 47rh ever or could it be that a rebuilder put a 47re bell housing on a 47rh?

I assume you mean to make a 48RH? The 48re doesn't have the necessary hydraulic governor to control the shifts. That's why the tail housings are shorter on the RE's
Was wondering the same thing...kind of assumed that this vid was going to touch on the subject like which is the strongest or most reliable for a truck that does a lot of towing 10 000 lbs daily or what should be modded internally to handle daily heavy towing...sure a manual would probably be ideal...but I am lazy and want a reliable auto in a 2004 4x4 with the 5.9.
@@harryguy76 48RE is the best way to go. (IMO) if you put a billet input, intermediate, and output shaft along with triple disc billet torque converter upgraded solenoid valve and upgraded valve body ETC... you will be able to tow no problem. You can check out precision transmission's on RUclips. Or Gearstar.com. They both do very good work.Hope this helps.

5:10 I got a 1994 dodge 12 valve that used to have a 47rh, the bell housing has 238-1 stamped on it.

Curious on a 2002 4wd what would be the best transmission for a solid tow rig build. Not racing but want to build a solid tow rig.
We recommend our 650hp option that way you get the upgraded clutch count as well as the input shaft with the triple disk converter.

How do you identify the transmission by the casting numbers?googled it and there's no explanation for it

No they came with either the 47 or 48re.

I'm still driving it, I start off in 2 then shift to 3. I try to keep the rpms no higher than 2000 at 80kph
They have no idea what they are talking about 3 pin is center power and outside lock up and od 92 518 rh was lockup all 47 were not 3 pin etc
