I watched this movie a million times since I was a little kid. I always wondered why sandy didn't just call danny to let him know that she was staying and gonna go school with him? I mean they shouod have had eachothers phone numbers? Also the flying car in the ending always never made any sense. So this theory of her being dead could be possible
The beach scene was the ghosts of Danny and Sandy as they both died in the drowning ordeal. The dialog was correct "Is this the end?", "No it's just the beginning." The rest of the movie are their suppostions that Danny did save her life, stayed and went to school together. Hence explains the ending of acsending by car to the heavens.
I just had a thought when they say he showed off splashing around the splashing was him looking for her as she was slowly drowning deeper and deeper into the water
I like it! Adds a creep factor. They were ghosts the whole time. The T-birds too, but they all died in a tragic street racing accident. Rydell high had been abandoned for decades hence the 50's style of the students in a 70's setting. Class resumes at rydell high for eternity together forever wahooo yeah!
My dad told me this theory while I was watching Grease earlier. I think it's a good theory that changes the whole perspective of the movie. Also to add onto it, during "Beauty School Dropout", the man serenading to Frenchy was actually God (ex: "mountain in the sky"). So basically everyone was dead and the high school was actually heaven (ex. Danny playing basketball with a 'hoop-less' hoop), the adults are angels and Danny was also dead too because he not only tried to save Sandy, but he couldn't remember her name. Even though people will say this theory is creepy. But this is kind of like the "Ed,Edd n' Eddy" theory where everyone was dead too since you don't see the parents.
That is a interesting concept considering for that time period people would not be in flying cars. When Danny is with his friends he just made the car appear that way in that shop in such a short period of time. Like they had a limited amount of time on Earth in it. Usually friends don't leave each other Danny could have said we can always meet up, and call on the phone. Not that we will be together forever that sounds kind of creepy.

They're both the only ones in all black at the end... maybe Rizzo and her boyfriend made up after she got an abortion, as signfied by her red and pink attire at the end and his black leather... I'm a believer!
They don’t really die until the very end....when the car lifts off do they? Until then it’s a fantasy all in their heads, while they are drowning...then in the end they finally pass away. It’s such a beautiful plot though the producers would never admit that.
I watched this in the movies back in the 70's and watched the musical as well and never considered this, that said, I think the writers would have spilled the beans by now.
Jed It wasn’t meant to be taken literally. It was a play on Broadway before the movie and back on Broadway after the movie. FYI, “Sandy”, “Hopelessly Devoted to You” and “We Go Together” were written specifically for the movie “Grease”. The play doesn’t have those songs.

Rubbish! Sandy is still alive 2 years later in 1961. Frenchy says this too Michael who is Sandys Cousin in Grease 2.
