  • When I was a kid back in the 70s and 80s, our family had a Presto Hot Dogger, a kitchen appliance that cooked hot dogs via electrocution. It was extremely unsafe and unsanitary. Here, I electrocute some hot dogs and try to eat one.

It's really kind of fascinating. We talk about all of these ways of cooking food: baking, braising, frying, broiling, whatever. But you don't often see food cooked by running an electric current through it. Can't think of another instance, in fact.

I would love to experiment with this thing. Thanks for sharing

The weird taste is probably from electrolysis moving metal atoms from the electrodes into the hotdog. Does the middle taste weird too or just around the holes?

We just got the same model today. Love it! Ours split open all nice and gruesome-like. We didn't taste anything funny about 'em. Fun way to make tube steaks...

Really?! Never thought of using them for that purpose. How many tines were necessary for the steaks?

'Tube steaks' are hot dogs. You never heard that phrase?
Now you've got us wondering... Lessee...hot dogs are a precooked meat so it'd probably take longer for a raw cut of beef... we'll hafta get back to you...

I'd love to have one. I remember these when I was a kid. The reason there are no safety devices is because back then we used our brains. We paid attention to what we were doing and if we got hurt we took the blame instead of looking for someone to sue.

You can't tell us it makes hot-dogs explode and then not explode a hot-dog.

My mom had one of these when I was a kid.
Hebrew National hot dogs are way to good for this gadget.
    IIRC, they are acrid.

I'm not sure how you can electrocute something that's already dead. But ok.
