Running this with my 7th and 8th grade team. The line is struggling with blocking and the qb b back mesh has been issues also. Any tips for the linemen?

Can you describe a bit more detail of your issues you are having with the line (ex. blocking assignments, pad level, proper 1st steps, etc.)? I have been a varsity and pop Warner coach in flexbone for the past several years and our team has steadily gotten much better since my tenure has o-line coach. We had 400 rushing yards this past Friday night and very proud of my guys. I spout a bunch of info, but I don't want to tell you something you already know.

@@mjackson60 Our line is undersized and pad level. We work all week on blocking down on bags then people. We put tape on our players thigh pads as an aiming point and they just dont go for it. The linebacker blitzes are killing us because our linemen get all nervous and don't block their assignment. Our qb still struggles with inside veer read.

@@mjackson60 I have also struggled with our oline coach because they keep telling me to cut the splits down.

@@russellsands7519 Hello Mr. Sands, apologies for the late reply. Was preparing for a big game this week. The undersized linemen part I have found hasn't been the biggest deterrent for us so long if they can move well. Short area quickness and speed is more important. If they are both undersized and slow then that will be a tougher battle to address. I have had the same issue with the aiming point (still do with youngers). Instead of the thigh pads I got a shiver ball to help with getting low. The ball allows for a bigger target for them to land on at they learn the movement. I exclusively used when teaching scooping. A great drill would be to roll it and have them chase it and rip the shoulder through the ball just for them to learn to understand the speed required safely. Shiver balls are $500 bucks, but you can get a weighted Pilates ball too (shoot for 75 or 85 cm). As far as assignment goes at that age, I would honestly focus on wedge blocking as much as possible and push as a unified group. The wedge usually starts at the first D-linemen closest to the dive key. I watch a lot of Lou Cella content for ideas also and he runs clinics at the high school level. Here is an example of his veer blocking rules.

He preaches a lot of triples team on the line, and I am similar. If your kids can't get to backers, then blow up the D-tackle and push him into the second level kill two birds with one stone. With your QB I would suggest you as a coach go in and force him to make the reads by giving him clean looks if you are not already. Having inexperience kids in a scout team do it often stunts the QB. Also, pay special attention to the B-back's track as well as if he does hit the b-gap outside of the guards hip it messes up the timing.

@@russellsands7519 How far apart your splits currently? I have my kids at the middle school and high school levels at 3.5-foot splits on average. There are special plays we do reduce our splits. If someone is telling you to reduce your splits (depending on how close they're talking) may not fully understand what you are trying to accomplish in the system. It should be noted that academies have reduced their just slightly below 3 feet because of the modern zone dive play, but that play isn't a major emphasis in our current scheme.

    thank you for your work
our district has been running the flexbone for about 18 years... Port Lavaca Calhoun
the highest we have gotten was the state semi finals...so far
We have lead the state in rushing offense and I believe we lead the nation once in rushing offense...we were the first i think with 3 1000 yard rushers in one season
