I have to admit that the thought of sitting for any amount of time watching Sebastian Stan playing Trump not only turns my stomach, but I think subconsciously led me to completely block the existence of this film in my mind. Until today, after watching a really good interview with Ali Abbasi on Democracy Now with Amy Goodman. Jeremy Strong as Roy Cohn is what has sold me on this film and has really piqued my interest.... that and the fact the "Trump Team" has tried to get this filmed banned (automatic 10/10). I loved Al Pacino in Angels in America and as you both have stated many actors have played Roy Cohn (evil P.O.S that he was) and have been able to get the best performances out of playing such a vile but layered individual. His connection/ mentorship into molding the Trump that we see today, makes all the sense in the world and I'm here to see Jeremy demolish the role. Also, loving the choices in the roles Sebastian is taking, great point Christy! Great review Guys!

Saw this last night and was surprised how much it impressed me. Agree that Jeremy Strong is the MVP. I also love how Sebastian Stan plays Trump as relatively normal in the beginning and then gradually over time he picks up the mannerisms he's known for now, like he's trying on a character or workshopping a bit, and he's slowly solidifying this new persona. One of the best moments is when Stan gives him just a few seconds of actual human emotion (his voice even sounds like another person) before clamming up, not letting his wife even touch him, and clearly wanting this ~feeling~ never to happen to him again.

I felt that ultimately the film pulled too many punches, almost glossing over the gargantuan debts never paid, business bankruptcies, questionable loans and tax manipulations. Interestingly, since the release, Ivana has spoken out against the SA, now claiming it never happened , though the producers took it directly from her court-recorded divorce testimony, so... !!🤷‍♀

Just got back from a packed "The Apprentice" showing at AMC Century City and I'm with Alonzo, I REALLY dug this film, great direction by Abissi, both Strong & Stan were GREAT as Cohn & Rump - same with Borat 2's Maria Bakalova as Ivana - the film's stylized direction seeming almost like a found footage doc or Grindhouse film of '70s era NYC, then a sheen brandnew VHS casette tape quality (and 4:3 aspect ratio) as the story progresses into the mid '80s - it all works great to bring you into that era.
Thematically we see the young hustling Rump, not quite yet the modern day P.T. Barnum he came to be in the mid '80s, vying so badly to be wanted, to be in the "cool kids" club, to get the respect he desired from his father Fred, and his surrogate father, the infamous lawyer & fixer...Roy Cohn. Their relationship born of Rump's fave transactional relationship style, the Quid Pro Quo, seen in these early days and even now. There are moments where the script, Sebestian Stan and director Abissi do try to pull viewer empathy for Rump in some teeny tiny attempts, but beyond the "show" of his "business" the Shell Game style of Rump's deals and his troubled relationships with his family, with his wife Ivana, with Cohn just cannot hide the dark, mean spirited, selfish snake he truly always was. Then & now.
Look if you don't know the Trump Family history or his father Fred & Donald's scummy, racist, cheapskate slumlord style of running real estate in New York bouroughs (which his shady son-in-law Jared Kushner also replicated), his SEVERAL failed Trump Casino's and side hustles, this Rump & Cohn Origin Story via the several docs, tell all books, magazine articles over the years, this film gets right at the crux of what the massively Insecure, Daddy Issues, Abusing, Using, Sociopathic fake fraud that Rump has been for decades.
You see EVERY seed of his "Monstro DonOld" penultimate form (shout out The Substance) before his current nationally & globally dangerous FINAL FORM of all his years of living his life via "Roy Cohn's 3 Rules" we non-MAGA cult sane Americans have been dealing with for nearly 10 years now.
*pairing The Apprentice with the Netflix' docu series "Dirty Money" episode The Confidence Man, or Showtime's "The Comey Rule" with Brendan Gleeson (execellent as the elder Mafia style Rump) make Abissi's film "prequel" to the Rump we know now all the more chilling.
*And if you really wanna get a terrifying glimpse of a possible present/future of the "Final Rump Form" on celluloid, Alex Garland's excellent recent April 2024 release "Civil War" is still a very possible reality should this Unfit, UnAmerica, Traitor, Con-man, Grifter, Rapist, Convicted Felon ever hold a seat of power like the Office of U.S. President again.
*also sidenote, very proud to cast my Harris Walz & Blue Downballot vote in my nearby voter dropbox before going to see "The Apprentice", looking forward to continuing my Harris Campaign, VoteSaveAmerica, Field Team 6 Phonebanking this weekend to Swing States as we are in the stretch run towards November and TURNING THE PAGE on DonOld :)

If Trump sees it, he'll be outraged at the accuracy of it.

For it to be called The Apprentice, the first half was much more dynamic & interesting than the last half. Once Cohn drops off halfway thru, just feels like we’re waiting for the movie to end despite Stan’s excellent performance.

Living in the UK I first became aware of Trump as a result of his high profile divorce from Ivana which got coverage here- it was treated contemptuously by our media with snide comments about the vulgarity of brash New York millionaires and their lack of any class.
He next popped up in Home Alone and of course we heard about the Apprentice- although his show wasn't aired here until much later, we got our own version.
In 2008 I visited NYC and did the whole open top bus tour- the tour guide was a real New York character out of central casting. He extolled us with terrific stories about the history of the city and eventually began talking about "the Donald" and boy did he go off on one! He ripped Trump to shreds, exposing all his dirty dealings and telling the tourists just how big a douche bag Trump was. It was bizarre and highly entertaining. I got the impression that the tour guide's family had been done wrong by Trump at some point.
He then popped up due to the nonsensical birtherism conspiracy theory about President Obama. The famous take down and total humiliation of Trump by Obama at the correspondents dinner was show here.
The rest as they say is history.
Cohen has of course featured in so many documentaries and movies- his involvement with McCarthyism and then acting on behalf of the owners of Studio 54 and the tax evasion case have all been well covered here.
I look forward to eventually seeing the movie and the one after that where he ends up in jail...

I'd say after watching Trump and the other side for around 10 years, not to mention all the many books that have come out on Trump in the last several years, that by this point we understand it pretty well.
Besides the election is less than a month away. If we don't understand the other side enough by this point to defeat them, then I don't know how much watching this movie is going to help in that time.
I don't know if I'm going to see this. I'm not eager to spend a couple of hours trapped in a room
