I have not slept just to make this video about a dude fumbling a dictatorship. Btw the National Assembly members are already filing a motion for impeachment... Just put the fries in the bag mr. President
Isn’t anyone at least one percent concerned that his claim that the political machine of SK is compromised by NK. It isn’t unheard of for them to be capable of it. They literally have programs to filter North Korean spies from asylum seekers because they send spies regularly. I am not suggesting it is what is happening but I feel like everyone is being incredibly self assured that he is just insane. Probably but, I just know that sort of hubris of confidence and certainty can lead to mistakes and I am concerned about SK because China going after Taiwan means that they have every incentive to politically disturb them and same with Russia taking conscripts from NK. SK is definitely on the geopolitical radar of other powers. It’s concerning that nobody is even curious to hear what his evidence was for doing this. I support opposition to the martial law especially given how he did that and everything afterwards. Just feel like people are styling on this guy when it’s not impossible he knows something, I haven’t heard a single person even ask about it out loud. Just because someone does something totally crazy doesn’t means they don’t know anything legitimate in terms of rationale or reasoning their behavior. I just really want to know verifiably that SK is not about to end up with a communist government.
One of the funniest kdrama elements about this is that MANY of the Democratic Party legislators who showed up to vote were.... DRUNK ON SOJU hahaha. I am Korean and if you watch live interviews from that night, many lawmakers are visibly red-eyed and slurring their words. That's right: A bunch of pissed-off, drunk Korean politicians left bars and restaurants on a Tuesday and stormed the National Assembly building to stop a dictator. And succeeded.
As a Peruvian, I can relate. Found out about Pedro Castillo self coup d'etat during class and he got arrested when I was in the bus going home. I LOLed so hard that day...

Thank you for sharing this. This event hits close to my home, Argentina, because in 2001 the former president Fernando de la Rúa tried to impose martial law too. But then people went out into the streets, march into the government's house and force him to flee in helicopter, also resigning hours later. Truly there's no greater power in a nation than their people united for freedom.
One thing not mentioned: it wasn't just the opposing party that made up the voting against martial law. It included members of the President's own party, and yet the vote was still _100% unanimous_
Imagine being part of the president’s party, seeing the hundred+ members of the Democratic Party make it to the vote, and still voting to maintain martial law.

One more important thing should be noted, the military itself was very calm and well composed, never attempted to fire at the citizens. Just shows what side the military is on. The military leader, president Yoon, etc is from the same high school, which probably was motivated by Yoon’s planning to declare martial law. One thing he miscalculated is that members of the military etc were defiant to their leadership, for example they were ordered to fire if necessary and have real bullets, but many soldiers didn’t fire and they didn’t hold real bullets. So there’s that. Also Yoon is possibly cooking up a second martial law, possibly with all of the military in his control, or by declaring war to North Korea. Scary af, but I hope we impeach him before all this happens lol
indeed. it really could've went bad if they actually fired. but i guess that's what happens when the military service is mandatory and not voluntary. the soldiers weren't there because they love the president. they're there because they got called to entertain this BS late at night in horrible weather and they're being asked to shoot at fellow civilians - people who are probably their families, friends, neighbors, teachers, colleagues. they really miscalculated
Yess the military was in fact very calm to the citizens which the Koreans were well aware of. Although in this video they are portrayed as pretty aggressive, in reality, they were just Koreans who also deeply cared for their country. They knew this was not right. Also, from interviews, it was reported that the members of the military didn’t know what they were called for. They thought this duty would be related to North Korea, only to find out they are actually participating as the coup for martial law. The truth is, they were also clueless of the current situation since they said they did not expect themselves to be landing at the National Assembly building. Despite the confusion, they obviously had no choice other than to follow orders since yk, the martial law had activated. But, as mentioned in the comment above, they weren’t hostile to citizens nor did they attempt to, which is honestly understandable. Anyways, Koreans were very warm to the military after the martial law was released since they knew the military had no fault in this. As a Korean I just don’t like how the military is being portrayed as villains in the media rn since they are not at all, just poor people who were suddenly called out of sleep for a mission that turned out to be the worst they could imagine.
Yoon can't declare war with North Korea because they're already at war with North Korea. He could have violated the cease fire tho. And there's no way he cooks up a second martial law attempt after a failed coupe. He doesn't have control of the military and you can tell because they didn't get aggressive and use force to prevent the vote which they could have easily done.
Yeah, basically "I'm sorry ma'am, just here doing my job" but also "I can't just shoot these innocent civilians". I bet they never even took the safety off.
I just why didn't the military support him properly? I mean its good the soldiers have a conscience, but I would usually think soldiers are mindless and always follow orders regardless of the consequences.

He needs to have “inside man” in military. As far as we know, the ministry of defense is loyal to him and perhaps he thought it’s possible because he had him. @@ryananggoro493its not concrete yet but the word that has been circulating the nation is that the since the martial law declaration was so sudden, most soldiers did not get a complete memo of what they were doing and what for. The biggest irony is, before taking the office of president, he was the General Prosecutor in the impeachment and conviction of Park Gyun-hye, another SK president, over abuse of power and influence peddling.
Fun fact(not so fun fact as a Korean myself) Fact 1: Yoon is a former Prosecutor General(similar to the Attorney General in America, but only does Prosecutor things) in Korea. He placed many former prosecutors who were close to him in various key positions in the administration, regardless of their expertise. So Koreans often sarcastically refer to their country as the ‘Republic of Prosecutors’. Fact 2: The soldiers mobilized for this martial law are the 707 Special Forces and the 1st Airborne Division (1 gong-su, 1 공수). The 707 is a special force deployed when there is a counterterrorism mission. Several celebrities from the unit were popular as RUclipsrs and TV appearances. However, due to this martial law mobilization, the perception of the unit has fallen to the bottom. In the case of the 1st Airborne Division, ironically, it is the same unit that was mobilized for the military coup that occurred 40 years ago. They have more experience in Coup than an actual fucking war. Fact 3: In the vote held at the National Assembly to nullify martial law, only a few(18 people) member of the ruling party (국민의 힘) participated. Most of them simply expressed their opinion, “We are against martial law,” at the party headquarters located one block away from the National Assembly, and watched the situation unfold. Most of the people who climbed over the National Assembly wall to take their seats were members of the opposition party.

South Korean highschooler here! The students were going on social media and protesting about it, and some students, like me and my friends, rushed to the congress to protest. The reason why Koreans are so alert about these situations is that we've gone through martial law alot and throught history, we were always oppressed of our freedom and rights every time a similar thing happened. So the thing to take note from this event is that history education is important, and because of well-educated people, we were able to stop this from prevailing into a horrific repetition of history.
This sounds like something Donald Trump will try to do during this next presidency. Unfortunately, a large part of this country indiscriminately supports everything he says, so the result might not be so cheerful :/

So if you see what Yoon says he talks about protecting the country against the North. -Yoon's party's name 국민의힘 is accused of coping far right party of Japan "國民の力" also 국민의힘 is grammatically incorrect, kindergarten level grammar, it is 국민의 힘. which did raise some eyebrows. -Lee Jae-Myung ( the live streaming guy) in the opposite party isn't really better either. There are things like people around him having unfortunate accidents and stuff. -Word is that the military was apologizing as they were pulling out. They didn't like what they were doing either. Also, since all able men go to the military, the military force that was there kinda looked like how a drill sergeant looks at a new trainee. (People are feeling sorry for those guys). -Word is that the Police were confused af. -Another word is someone in Yoon's party said in something like "the enemy force was too great". meaning they saw the citizens as enemy.
As an American living in Seoul, I thank you for this info, but most of us non-Koreans won't understand a lot of it. I just need to state something that a lot of Americans won't get: There is often corruption on both sides, and that doesn't matter what country it is. Many Americans/Westerners are highly radicalized and have no common sense or logic, so try to villainize entire parties because of their distorted worldviews. Meaning, Yoon being right-leaning, there'll be lots of very low IQ comparisons to Trump, even though Korea's last two leaders before Yoon were left-leaning and also highly unpopular (with Jae-in Moon being a NK and communist China sympathizer) and one of them even got life in prison for her corruption (although Geun-hye Park wasn't technically a Democrat; just liberal.) In short: People need to stop trying to make this a "left vs right" issue; political corruption is common everywhere.

bro what a time to be alive. At this rate my grandkids are gonna be hearing 3 hour long stories of "SO THERE I WAS, WITNESSING A FAILED COUP, A CHAOTIC US ELECTION, P DIDDY AND MOST IMPORTANTLY AN ANNOUNCEMENT ON GTA6'S RELEASE DATE"
Most of those soldiers who were dispatched were probably conscripted as well, and were very much aware of what they were doing. It's not like they were his personal body guards. They are not some brainwashed ponds, but fellow koreans from 21st century, just doing their duties in uniforms. I think they well deserve respect for keeping things calm, safe, restricted, and behaving in such a well disciplined manner where no one were killed nor hurt during this mayhem. It is also amazing how both parties (army and protesters) understood each other's situations, and tried to deescalate the tensions. It is pure miracle how no one were hurt last night. In some of the videos one of the soldier even apologizes to those citizens.
And yet, they are still just mindless drones in their uniform and would implement a dictator if told to and so the question on how ethical they handled it really doesn't matter. Let's not normalize Stockholm syndrome here.
Please do not say anything if you do not know the facts.. they were not conscripted soldiers.. 707 (who were the soldiers that were dispatched for the martial law) is a special force which means that they are all career military soldiers... they are claiming that they were told by their higher-ups that they were going to North Korea but this is a lie and a cover-up as it has been noted that they were given a map of the parliamentary building days before so they know how to enter the building as well knowing where the opposition party leader room is on the orders to arrest him.. please stop this nonsense I keep seeing of them being conscripted and innocent and not knowing what was going on.. they are playing with you, they are not innocent.. they are using the same excuse they used by the soldiers that were sent to massacre citizens of Gwangju in 1980s... they were not peaceful (I know they could have been more violence but that does not mean there weren't any), there are videos filmed of the soliders breaking into the building, pushing civilians to the floor... do you know the military hospital had a training of how to handle large amounts of injured people 4 days before martial law was declared? They expected blood..! This wasn't planned to be peaceful, we were really lucky that the situation was handled fast that it was... but stop claiming the soliders didn't know what they were doing and are innocent, they knew exactly what they were doing and are as guilty as the president, stop framing them this way
@@spark6649 If the soldiers were really in on it like you said, why didn't they shoot live rounds? Even with cameras rolling, with that much prep work, that wouldn't matter that much. Obviously there was some mental discourse between the 707th guys on the scene.
I would honestly call this a triumph of the democratic spirit of the people of south korea. The fact that an attempted coup via martial law was so quickly overturned and defeated is phenomenal. While the event itself was scary, there is a ton of hope in the fact that the coup was so unsucesful.
How would you feel about this if it turns out that the people overturning this actually are in collusion with N. Korea? What if this all turns out to be a failure of democracy because the people are not properly informed? If so, then the real coup are the people who put a stop to the martial law.
Started this video thinking "oh good, another awful thing happened" and came out of it with renewed faith in humanity. People can still come together to defend their rights against oppression. They can still choose to act, and not all politicians will let oppressions happen without a fight either. Today is a good day. I salute the South Korean people.
Sadly some ultra right wing people are saying, WelL hE dIDint hAVE a ChoIce PaLimEnt waS too LEFt Wing to GET anythinG DoNe. He should have thought about that when he ran and made crazy promises then. He promised all those things, and didn’t get them done, now people don’t like him, and that’s not an excuse to become a dictator
@@PopoTCG the hurricanes, the school shootings, the riots, the polarized politics, the list goes on. I live in multiple countries, and I would take this "awful thing" in South Korea where people actually banded together and stood up against authoritarianism than self-righteous people who think everything is peachy in America
I mean its also not the best. In south korea, most of the Presidents ended up as dictators, dead or imprisoned, those who were imprisoned were pardoned

A few fun facts behind this turmoil : 1. One of the congressmen who voted against the martial law, Park Ji-won, has actually experienced 17 INSTANCES of emergency/security martial law throughout his whole life. Did I mention that he is 82 years old today? Or did I mention that he also got through the police barricade? Or did I forgot to mention he was once a head of a national intelligence agency? And did I mention he has a motherfXXkin glass eye? DID I ALSO MENTION HE WAS HALF DRUNK THAT DAY? 2. The woman who grappled with soldier was not an ordinary person. She was also one of the spokesperson of the opposition coalition, Ahn Gwi-ryong. 3. About 140 years ago, on the same day with the coup attempt - A band of radical progressive political faction (개화파) also attemped a coup against the old regime - aiming for a Meiji Restoration-ish reforms. They only lasted 3 days. Well, at least they lasted more than this. 4. Ah, yes. The barricade. Due to South Korea's rather turbulent political backgrounds and oppressive military juntas, quite a lot of politicians and their aides have some experience in "street warfare." i.e. barricading againsy police line, making makeshift tear-gas masks, and everyones favorite - the Molotovs. While these were somewhat necessary skills in protests against the regime, it turned the lawmaking business rather bloody and seige warfare-like when they got the badges. Those practices were outlawed in 2012. But apparently- they still got it. I guess old habits die hard.

Dude. Great video. I had seen the news on the Korea Herald but the headline was something like Night Troops shut down parliament and impose martial law and it didn’t really elaborate much at the time so I was like wtf is going on??? Thank you for explaining!
Lmao, this is actually typical for a SK president. Look at their last 10 presidents and the various corrupt things they did. SK has even worse leaders than China.
Yeah with how things going in my country (Myanmar), you do not want martial law no matter what. It was the best outcome because of the Korean people take action immediately.
This happened this way because we went through countless tragedies, exactly like current Myanmar. After 20 or so years, you guys are gonna get a leader who tries a coup and fails because the people know it leads to a bad road. The best possible solution is to educate the public and have better politics but that's hard to implement. All in all the situations of Myanmar are extremely difficult to handle with power within the country. If there were democratic countries that are strong and willing to help, that would solve the situation, maybe.
7:28 Regarding the footage of the lady that went viral. [The footage is actually taken out of context. If you watch the footage that takes place right before this clip you will learn that the female politician literally walks up to the standing soldier, grabs his gun by the barrel, and points it toward herself. Then she says stuff like "let go of me" (while grabbing onto the soldier) "let go of the gun" and all the good-sounding words that would look good on the media. She did it solely for the purpose of gaining her political supporters, and she took a rather drastic measure, because before the event her political standing was on the near verge of ending (she'd been really messing up on her career). A lot of Koreans actually blame her as the person who almost escalated the event to the point of no return, because by Korean military law (I'm sure it's the same everywhere), when another person tries to take away your gun from your possession, you have all the rights to "attack" him/her. The soldier's decision to actually hold back literally prevented the whole martial law event from escalating to the next level. Yet, the soldier is getting all the hates by certain groups of Korean people just so that the female politician can regain her popularity - which is media control at the finest if anything.] Taken from Reddit comment by SilentSolstice_82

@moasssang yeah. I feel kinda bad for the military. Glad things works out on the end.

Thank god someone did a detailed video on what went down. I live in Tokyo and even I didn’t know what was happening. Well done young man.
Fun fact(not so fun fact as a Korean myself)
Fact 1: Yoon is a former Prosecutor General(similar to the Attorney General in America, but only does Prosecutor things) in Korea.
Bro your Fact 3 is actually fake. Ruling party has two group in it(친윤 president Yoon-friendly and 친한 party leader Han-friendy). party leader Han and his supportive parliamnts also get in to national assembly and join the vote.

The reason why Koreans are so alert about these situations is that we've gone through martial law alot and throught history, we were always oppressed of our freedom and rights every time a similar thing happened. -190 were able to make it into the parliament and 190 agreed to remove martial law. 17 of them were in Yoon's party. the rest of the Yoon's party went to their "base".
-Last time martial law was declared it was 1979, called 10.26 incident when Park Chung Hee died.
-Yoon was accused of watching too much far-right youtube channels because it was distorting his views.
-the Right always calls the Left "NK spies" and the Left calls the Right "Japanese warcrime supporters".

Meaning, Yoon being right-leaning, there'll be lots of very low IQ comparisons to Trump, even though Korea's last two leaders before Yoon were left-leaning and also highly unpopular (with Jae-in Moon being a NK and communist China sympathizer) and one of them even got life in prison for her corruption (although Geun-hye Park wasn't technically a Democrat; just liberal.)

bro what a time to be alive.
Bro lmao that's hella creative
The US election wasn’t even chaotic though
@@mathieul4303 Wait till J6.
@@mathieul4303it was. Trumps life was in danger while Kamala tried to cackle her way to Presidency lol

Let's not normalize Stockholm syndrome here.
ye those men really managed the situation greatly. I would expect conscripted guys to be allot more nervous and not willing to be there.
@@snusmumriken145 Because they are not conscripted. These guys are special forces. They are trained to stay calm.
1:44 😊Thank you. I was wondering what was going on. I'm glad South Koreans fought to keep their freedom.❤🙏🏼🙏🏾🙏🏽♥️
He promised all those things, and didn’t get them done, now people don’t like him, and that’s not an excuse to become a dictator
check out what went down in georgia too.
I don't understand what awful thing happened recently other than this South Korean thing. America has been doing great. Canada, well maybe not them
SHUT UP SHUT UP
@@PopoTCG the hurricanes, the school shootings, the riots, the polarized politics, the list goes on. I live in multiple countries, and I would take this "awful thing" in South Korea where people actually banded together and stood up against authoritarianism than self-righteous people who think everything is peachy in America
You’re telling me when they impeach someone there, they actually lose office. Next you’ll tell me their judicial system works 😂
I mean its also not the best. In south korea, most of the Presidents ended up as dictators, dead or imprisoned, those who were imprisoned were pardoned
Yeah when you impeach someone on actual substanciated charges, for sure. When you use lawfare to target political opposition and make up factually evident lies, it doesnt go so well.
You’re telling me when a president commits treason he actually gets kicked out of office?
You just know Trump is going to try this here in the U.S. It will be a put up or shut up moment for the American people. Either you are for or against dictatorship.
Damn, I knew this happened but had no idea why and American media sucks. Thank you so much for staying up to record this. I stayed up to watch it. You're a bro.
Because Trump don't want the Americans getting any ideas on Jan 6
A few fun facts behind this turmoil :
@MaximumHeresey well that lawmaker was inches away from being smoked in the face.... U really don't want to grab a dude's rifle during an unrest... thanks God for the professionalism of the Operator...
@@MaximumHeresey 2024 sure is a time to be a live, that president got absolutely clowned XD

The Enlightenment Party! LOL!
The brave woman who grappled with the soldier is Ahn Gwi-Ryeong. She is the spokesperson for the Democratic Party :)
The army wasn't even try their best. Their commander lied to them that they were going to north korea, not the court. There's actually a clip where a solider apologizes to a citizen for pushing him to hard. The soldiers were also korean citizens who knew what was wrong and them not trying their best was wholesome
Yea but they also tried to break into the building and arrest the lawmakers
@@questonblock people didn't see the clip where the staffer was blocking the doorway with the Parliament chair to prevent the military from storming the chamber, while also using a fire extinguisher to spray the soldier away.
The army was just a mess, but they are as guilty.. if they thought they were going to North Korea, they wouldn't have broken into the building.. all a lie
Have you seen the clip of the soldiers flooding in the parliamentary building? They don't look confused on why they are invading the parliamentary building, instead of North Korea.. the army is as guilty as the president, stop spreading the lies
@@questonblockthey were duty bound to do so, otherwise they can be court martialed for insubordination. It was an unfortunate position to be in for the soldiers.
Dude. Great video. I had seen the news on the Korea Herald but the headline was something like Night Troops shut down parliament and impose martial law and it didn’t really elaborate much at the time so I was like wtf is going on??? Thank you for explaining!
I thought Philippine Politics will be this crazy, but this bro had went it to a new standard 😭😭😭
Tfw you make a worse decision than the philippine government is crazy
Nah the Philippines politics still suck more than Korea.
I was going to say, this dude basically is a more incompetent marcos, complete with his own Imelda buying up luxury goods.
PH politics is still shittier than Korean lmao. Most officials are blood related and you can even call PH government as their "family business"
As soon as I heard about the guy declaring martial law, my first thoughts were:
Nahhhh
Marcos moment TwT//
It's inspiring to see how the South Korean people fought tooth and nail against tyranny here. This is how you preserve democracy. By believing in it.
Isnt south korea a republic? Preserving peoples voices cant always be acheived by just a democracy😅
South Korea may be a democracy but the United States is a Republic.
All country's are oligarchy's. Democracy does not exist. You can only vote for criminals that does not care about you. That is not real democracy !
Lmao, this is actually typical for a SK president. Look at their last 10 presidents and the various corrupt things they did. SK has even worse leaders than China.
@@5SecondsOfFrame Can you tell me how exactly are these two terms mutually exclusive?
Yeah with how things going in my country (Myanmar), you do not want martial law no matter what.
It was the best outcome because of the Korean people take action immediately.
Yea martial law very scary (I’m Burmese too)
Hope ur staying safe bro and I hope democracy returns to your country one day
Myanmar is heading for something even worse than dictatorship ( total anarchy & civil war ) & I don't want that at all
I really cannot imagine what y'all must be going through, so please stay safe and I hope democracy returns to Myanmar someday. :(
This happened this way because we went through countless tragedies, exactly like current Myanmar.
Yet, the soldier is getting all the hates by certain groups of Korean people just so that the female politician can regain her popularity - which is media control at the finest if anything.]

He did this when a lot of people were asleep. Night owls came and saved the day 🤩
That is a positive aboout the horrendously large amount of homework they have to do in south korea
They do say that highly intelligent people are more likely to be night owls, he might have had better chances at the crack of dawn when they're all going to sleep....
He might have been more successful if he had waited a couple more hours. Many people are still awake at 11, even kids are often still up at that time. 1am and public transportation has ended for the night and the majority of people would be asleep. Good thing he isn't that smart...
