I'm pretty sure he was worried about getting kidnapped and draged away. Because we already have that history of abducting opposing politicians. And the (former) president really sent army to his house to capture him.
The army wasn't even try their best. Their commander lied to them that they were going to north korea, not the court. The crazy thing is that there are Koreans who slept through all of this and woke up to news about how their president tried to establish a dictatorship, fellow Koreans protesting against it and it all resolving before you even woke up. I would honestly call this a triumph of the democratic spirit of the people of south korea. The fact that an attempted coup via martial law was so quickly overturned and defeated is phenomenal. While the event itself was scary, there is a ton of hope in the fact that the coup was so unsucesful.
Yun Sok Yeol: “I am declaring Martial Law.” Also Yun Sok Yeol, several hours later: “I made a severe and continuous lapse in my judgement, and I don't expect to be forgiven.”

He failed on multiple areas of trying to be Palpatine. 1. Palpatine was so charismatic and played the political game so well the senate basically gave him the dictatorship. 2. Palpatine was orchestrating both sides of the potential war 3. Palpatine spent years laying the groundwork for executing his plan

Fun fact(not so fun fact as a Korean myself) Fact 1: Yoon is a former Prosecutor General(similar to the Attorney General in America, but only does Prosecutor things) in Korea. He placed many former prosecutors who were close to him in various key positions in the administration, regardless of their expertise. So Koreans often sarcastically refer to their country as the ‘Republic of Prosecutors’. Fact 2: The soldiers mobilized for this martial law are the 707 Special Forces and the 1st Airborne Division (1 gong-su, 1 공수). The 707 is a special force deployed when there is a counterterrorism mission. Several celebrities from the unit were popular as RUclipsrs and TV appearances. However, due to this martial law mobilization, the perception of the unit has fallen to the bottom. In the case of the 1st Airborne Division, ironically, it is the same unit that was mobilized for the military coup that occurred 40 years ago. They have more experience in Coup than an actual fucking war. Fact 3: In the vote held at the National Assembly to nullify martial law, only a few(18 people) member of the ruling party (국민의 힘) participated. Most of them simply expressed their opinion, “We are against martial law,” at the party headquarters located one block away from the National Assembly, and watched the situation unfold. Most of the people who climbed over the National Assembly wall to take their seats were members of the opposition party.
Bro your Fact 3 is actually fake. Ruling party has two group in it(친윤 president Yoon-friendly and 친한 party leader Han-friendy). party leader Han and his supportive parliamnts also get in to national assembly and join the vote.

The South Korean "coup" is a lot more complicated than people might have expected. Rather than a simple "hissy fit" or legitimate coup attempt, it was most likely a strategic use of martial law. Before he was elected, President Yoo was the head of the prosecutors. He was known as the "knife stabber" because he relentlessly went after and challenged corruption, which was why politicians feared him and why he was elected in the first place. Surprisingly, what most media didn't report on, was that one hour right after he announced martial law, he used those power to essentially send the military to raid files he wouldn't have been granted access to from the opposition party, which held a majority. The opposition party, before the coup, essentially used their majority power to strip the sitting president Yoo of being able to use any tax funding, making him a president with no power. Additionally, the opposition party leader, Lee Jae-myung, was accused of numerous crimes beforehand, such as corruption and holding hands with gangsters. Most likely, Yoo used martial law to grant executive power to find daming evidence against the opposition party and its leaders. TBH, I'm a bit biased because I don't really like Lee Jae-Myung, the opposition leader, after he represented and won a case for his Nephew after he killed his girlfriend and her mother with a knife in front of her father, who barely escaped after jumping off a building. Also numerous of Lee's aid who supposedly had connection with him mysteriously committed suicide after they were facing prosecution and such... Nevertheless, I can't imagine the South Korean President using martial law simply because he was pissed at losing. It literally makes no sense to enact martial law then retract it 6 hours laters just because people got mad. Most likely, it was a gamble he made to go down as the most idiotic president in Korean history or bring down the opposition with him.
Fun fact) The soldiers were informed that the North Koreans had crossed the armistice line and that they had to go out. Therefore, after arriving at the National Assembly, they felt confused and passive in his operations.

As South Korean. I would like to explain some stuff about Yoon and what happened. -190 were able to make it into the parliament and 190 agreed to remove martial law. 17 of them were in Yoon's party. the rest of the Yoon's party went to their "base". -Last time martial law was declared it was 1979, called 10.26 incident when Park Chung Hee died. -Yoon was accused of watching too much far-right youtube channels because it was distorting his views. -the Right always calls the Left "NK spies" and the Left calls the Right "Japanese warcrime supporters". So if you see what Yoon says he talks about protecting the country against the North. -Yoon's party's name 국민의힘 is accused of coping far right party of Japan "國民の力" also 국민의힘 is grammatically incorrect, kindergarten level grammar, it is 국민의 힘. which did raise some eyebrows. -Lee Jae-Myung ( the live streaming guy) in the opposite party isn't really better either. There are things like people around him having unfortunate accidents and stuff. -Word is that the military was apologizing as they were pulling out. They didn't like what they were doing either. Also, since all able men go to the military, the military force that was there kinda looked like how a drill sergeant looks at a new trainee. (People are feeling sorry for those guys). -Word is that the Police were confused af. -Another word is someone in Yoon's party said in something like "the enemy force was too great". meaning they saw the citizens as enemy.
As an American living in Seoul, I thank you for this info, but most of us non-Koreans won't understand a lot of it. I just need to state something that a lot of Americans won't get: There is often corruption on both sides, and that doesn't matter what country it is. Many Americans/Westerners are highly radicalized and have no common sense or logic, so try to villainize entire parties because of their distorted worldviews. Meaning, Yoon being right-leaning, there'll be lots of very low IQ comparisons to Trump, even though Korea's last two leaders before Yoon were left-leaning and also highly unpopular (with Jae-in Moon being a NK and communist China sympathizer) and one of them even got life in prison for her corruption (although Geun-hye Park wasn't technically a Democrat; just liberal.) In short: People need to stop trying to make this a "left vs right" issue; political corruption is common everywhere.
Most of those soldiers who were dispatched were probably conscripted as well, and were very much aware of what they were doing. It's not like they were his personal body guards. They are not some brainwashed ponds, but fellow koreans from 21st century, just doing their duties in uniforms. I think they well deserve respect for keeping things calm, safe, restricted, and behaving in such a well disciplined manner where no one were killed nor hurt during this mayhem. It is also amazing how both parties (army and protesters) understood each other's situations, and tried to deescalate the tensions. It is pure miracle how no one were hurt last night. In some of the videos one of the soldier even apologizes to those citizens.
And yet, they are still just mindless drones in their uniform and would implement a dictator if told to and so the question on how ethical they handled it really doesn't matter. Let's not normalize Stockholm syndrome here.
Please do not say anything if you do not know the facts.. they were not conscripted soldiers.. 707 (who were the soldiers that were dispatched for the martial law) is a special force which means that they are all career military soldiers... they are claiming that they were told by their higher-ups that they were going to North Korea but this is a lie and a cover-up as it has been noted that they were given a map of the parliamentary building days before so they know how to enter the building as well knowing where the opposition party leader room is on the orders to arrest him.. please stop this nonsense I keep seeing of them being conscripted and innocent and not knowing what was going on.. they are playing with you, they are not innocent.. they are using the same excuse they used by the soldiers that were sent to massacre citizens of Gwangju in 1980s... they were not peaceful (I know they could have been more violence but that does not mean there weren't any), there are videos filmed of the soliders breaking into the building, pushing civilians to the floor... do you know the military hospital had a training of how to handle large amounts of injured people 4 days before martial law was declared? They expected blood..! This wasn't planned to be peaceful, we were really lucky that the situation was handled fast that it was... but stop claiming the soliders didn't know what they were doing and are innocent, they knew exactly what they were doing and are as guilty as the president, stop framing them this way

A few fun facts behind this turmoil : 1. One of the congressmen who voted against the martial law, Park Ji-won, has actually experienced 17 INSTANCES of emergency/security martial law throughout his whole life. Did I mention that he is 82 years old today? Or did I mention that he also got through the police barricade? Or did I forgot to mention he was once a head of a national intelligence agency? And did I mention he has a motherfXXkin glass eye? DID I ALSO MENTION HE WAS HALF DRUNK THAT DAY? 2. The woman who grappled with soldier was not an ordinary person. She was also one of the spokesperson of the opposition coalition, Ahn Gwi-ryong. 3. About 140 years ago, on the same day with the coup attempt - A band of radical progressive political faction (개화파) also attemped a coup against the old regime - aiming for a Meiji Restoration-ish reforms. They only lasted 3 days. Well, at least they lasted more than this. 4. Ah, yes. The barricade. Due to South Korea's rather turbulent political backgrounds and oppressive military juntas, quite a lot of politicians and their aides have some experience in "street warfare." i.e. barricading againsy police line, making makeshift tear-gas masks, and everyones favorite - the Molotovs. While these were somewhat necessary skills in protests against the regime, it turned the lawmaking business rather bloody and seige warfare-like when they got the badges. Those practices were outlawed in 2012. But apparently- they still got it. I guess old habits die hard.

Yeah with how things going in my country (Myanmar), you do not want martial law no matter what. It was the best outcome because of the Korean people take action immediately.
This happened this way because we went through countless tragedies, exactly like current Myanmar. After 20 or so years, you guys are gonna get a leader who tries a coup and fails because the people know it leads to a bad road. The best possible solution is to educate the public and have better politics but that's hard to implement. All in all the situations of Myanmar are extremely difficult to handle with power within the country. If there were democratic countries that are strong and willing to help, that would solve the situation, maybe.
I am currently in korea for vacation and i actually escaped to Busan a couple of days ago. december 1st, to be exact. I slept at 10:30 pm in December 3rd, and woke up in the morning of December 4th at 6 am. Literally martial law was placed and lifted in the span of me sleeping XD
So how many communists are in South Korea now trying to take over? Last time I was there there were a lot of very dumb ajumas and people who watch CNN and sympathize with the Left. Only a few tough Korean dudes were right wing.
News anchor-turned politician Ms. Ahn Gwi-ryeong is the one who grabbed the soldier's rifle and demanded to know if he had no shame in marching on civilians while so armed. She is also a descendant of a S.Korean freedom fighter.
Unfortunately there are incels, 'men's rights activists', and other korean losers with no girlfriends that are criticizing and mad at Gwi-ryeong, presumably because she's a woman.
Probably, but they had to follow the orders as they were in the dark as much as everyone else, just told “martial law is in effect stop anyone from getting into the assembly”

Fact 1: Yoon is a former Prosecutor General(similar to the Attorney General in America, but only does Prosecutor things) in Korea.
Something I saw Koreans mention was that many of the opposition party had been democracy activists in their youth. They KNEW what was to be done. Remember the last dictatorship in Korea ended in 1987. There's 45 year olds there who lived it.
The President of South Korea focused on the Election Commission at a time when attention was concentrated on the National Assembly. Reports indicate that 300 special forces seized the Election Commission's servers in order to find evidence of election fraud. This was under martial law. In fact, the Election Commission does not have a warrant. It is impossible to search this place without military personnel.

What a legend

-Another word is someone in Yoon's party said in something like "the enemy force was too great". meaning they saw the citizens as enemy.
you have luck he wasent popular, because if someone is popular he can do practically anything

Meaning, Yoon being right-leaning, there'll be lots of very low IQ comparisons to Trump, even though Korea's last two leaders before Yoon were left-leaning and also highly unpopular (with Jae-in Moon being a NK and communist China sympathizer) and one of them even got life in prison for her corruption (although Geun-hye Park wasn't technically a Democrat; just liberal.)
In short: People need to stop trying to make this a "left vs right" issue; political corruption is common everywhere.
