    I will confess, the c.g. animation for the Beatles does not look that bad. The animation looks well done, even when it comes down to the photorealistic designs for each of the Beatles, and they at least provide plenty of emotion and expression with their movements and line deliveries.
    When looking at the designs for the Blue Meanies on the Google, however, well…
    Let’s just say that the photorealistic c.g.i. should be reserved for the Beatles themselves.
    The way I see it, the film would probably work much better if the Beatles themselves were the only characters animated by photorealistic c.g., while the Blue Meanies and other residents of Pepperland were given HAND-DRAWN animation like in the original “Yellow Submarine”, thus establishing a contrast between the real world and the surreal one (even if the Beatles do live surreal lives in this film).
    I strongly think had the filmmakers gone this route, then the film would likely see the light of day and probably gain some positive reception, especially when it comes to the experimental fusion between lucid hand-drawn animation and photorealistic c.g.i.

      It is a very special movie indeed. Saw it as a kid too, the surreal and dreamlike animation is very imaginative and beautiful to watch. The whole movie has this very unique vibe that i only got from Ralph Bashki movies for example. Is like a weird ethereal thing. I got the chance to watch Fantastic Planet (a very phsychodelic animated movie) in theatres and it was very trippy. I literally felt like in a black void, submerged in art. I was not stoned i swear, i cant imagine how it would feel like to watch Yellow Submarine on a huge screen in the darkness. Also, this remake, looked that it was also going to be very surreal, and not like the typical Disney CG animation, looks like we missed someting really unique :(

      I think the idea was the switch between films that Zemeckis would direct, and ones he wouldn't. A Christmas Carol (released Nov 2009) was directed by Zemeckis, then Mars Needs Moms (released Mar 2011) was directed by Simon Wells, then this one (planned for Summer 2012) was to be directed by Zemeckis, then their next one after that was to be "Calling All Robots" (planned for Fall/Winter 2012 or 2013) which would've been directed by Michael Dougherty.

      While I agree ot looks great for 09, they're definitely stylized caricatures of them, not photorealistic recreations. Notice the big heads, elongated faces and huge eyes. That said, cartoonizing faces in animated films is super important to avoid the uncanny valley effect.

      @@Shriner49er I agree, but also they look incredibly similar to the members even in this style. And for 2009 at that. Even if it isn't a photo realistic copy, it's very damn close lol

    • @Shriner49er
      @Shriner49er 3 года назад

      @@squillz8310 I mean, that's the idea, but you have to see how exaggerated their defining features are here. As well as their blemishes such as wrinkles and pores are minimalized. These are absolutely idealized versions of their faces.
      I urge you to compare actual photographs next to these designs and you'll see, while they do very much capture the character of the four, these are cartoon people with cartoon faces.
      And to be clear, they are incredibly well done, but it was absolutely necessary to not try making them entirely photorealistic as they would look very creepy. Animation has come a long way since 09, but the technology still hasn't quite gotten there yet.
      Perhaps with deepfakes yes, but with rigged CG models, no.
      Also they fall very much in line with this studios particular style, similar to the designs from Polar Express and Monster House.

    Honestly, the 3D animation fits so much! I don't know why. But after seeing some 3D animated films in my life (e.g. The Polar Express, Mars Needs Moms, The Adventures of Tintin), I look at this clip and thought "Man, this is good! Whoever animated this did a great job!" And I agree with someone in the comments, this 3D animation DOES capture the weirdness of the scene. And I guess having it in 3D animation does make it look a bit trippy, which I think also fits. I haven't seen the full movie, though. But just watching this scene, I feel like there's a lot of weird stuff going on. Imagine watching the 1968 version, which used traditional animation, and it went from 2D to 3D and everything starts to get more realistic, to the point where you thought you're high.
