The Tahoe Rim Trail | Day 8: Gray Lake - Marlette Peak Campground (24.7 miles)
(8/26/23) I left Gray Lake this morning just as the sun started hitting the surrounding peaks. It was a beautiful morning, and I was headed up to the highest point of the TRT - Relay Peak - 10,285’.
The views were spectacular on the way up. Lake Tahoe disappeared from view and I got my first views into Carson Valley since day 1.
About 14 miles in on the day, I came across my last water source until Spooner Summit in 20 miles. I would be camping in the middle of this stretch too. So I carried out 5 liters for 10 miles to the campground so I would have enough for today, overnight, and the first 10 miles the next day. It was exhausting and heavy. The scenery was beautiful though, and that helped. I really don’t like dry stretches like this though. It’s amazing to think that a week ago on the other side of the lake the trail was a river, now there’s no water for miles.
Shortly before arriving at camp I arrived at an exposed area with views of Marlette Lake and Lake Tahoe. This provided a welcome boost on my last mile of the day.
Marlette Peak Campground was already mostly full when I arrived at 5pm. It was a pretty quiet night for me and I headed in early after a big day and bigger day tomorrow.

Thanks. Another beautiful episode. You are exceptional at capturing landscape images. I’m getting pretty stoked for my TRT trip starting in exactly 2 weeks from today. Yay.
Again, thank you. Peace and happy trails.
The barren area above Marlette lake was probably my favorite stretch of trail. It was brutally windy (I'd say 45-60mph sustained winds)... it made it hard, but an unforgettable and unique experience.
Really loving your take on this trail. Thanks for sharing!
Definitely a favorite area for me too! Thanks for watching!
Bikes only allowed on even days? That's gotta be a confusing rule to follow.
Glad that creek panned out.
Yeah the rules change throughout the trail. Allowed, not allowed, allowed only on even days depending on the section. I just kept on hiking 🥾
The water was a bit of a gamble but it paid off. Would have been a looong day having to walk back though!
