Peter Gabriel - Lay Your Hands on Me (Live In Athens 1987)

- Peter Gabriel performing Lay Your Hands on Me, from his fourth solo album, live at the Lycabettus theatre in Athens in October 1987.
On stage are PG, Tony Levin (bass), David Rhodes (guitar), David Sancious (keyboards) and Manu Katché (drums).
"It's a trust exercise. I had spent a long time thinking about how to bridge the border between performer and audience. I thought 'maybe the ultimate thing you could do as a performer would be to fall backwards off the stage.' - pg

LAY YOUR HANDS ON ME
Sat in the corner of the Garden Grill, with the plastic flowers on the window sill
No more miracles, loaves and fishes, been so busy with the washing of the dishes
Reaction level's much too high - I can do without the stimuli
I'm living way beyond my ways and means, living in the zone of the in-betweens
I can see the flashes on the frozen ocean, static charge of cold emotion
Watched on by the distant eyes - watched on by the silent hidden spies
But still the warmth flows through me
And I sense you know me well
No luck, no golden chances
No mitigating circumstances now
It's only common sense
There are no accidents round here
I am willing - lay your hands on me (here)
I am ready - lay your hands on me (here)
I believe - lay your hands on me, over me
Working in gardens, thornless roses, fat men play with their garden hoses
Poolside laugh has a cynical bite, sausage speared by the cocktail satellite
I walk away from light and sound, down stairways leading underground
But still the warmth flows through me
And I sense you know me well
It's only common sense
There are no accidents round here
I am willing - lay your hands on me (here)
I am ready - lay your hands on me (here)
I believe - lay your hands on me , over me, over me,
Lay your hands on me
Lay your hands on me
Lay your hands on me , over me Видеоклипы
I saw this in L.A. This song was the point of no return. The show left my friends and I speechless for many hours afterwards. After all these decades, from Pink Floyd to Rage against the machine and everything in between, it remains the most amazing performance Ive ever seen. Brings me to tears watching this
And there you have it folks that’s Peter Gabriel inventing crowd surfing. I love how tired he looked before he went down there, and how he really just enjoyed all of the moments. When he bounced back up on stage re-energized… This man is a global treasure ! We must protect him at all costs
In some of those moments, it looked like he was trying to hold on to dear life. That crowd was about to rip him to shreds like they did his jacket.
no... he didn't invent crowd surfing.. my god...
@@morbidmanmusiche once broke his ankle running from stage into a crowd which parted like the Red Sea lol. Back in the early seventies.
One of the most incredible concerts I have ever witnessed, and this song in particular sent chills down my spine as I had never witnessed anyone offering themselves up to an audience in this way. Amazing.
This man is truly in a class all his own. His song are like nothing I’ve ever heard before. I absolutely adore him!👍😊
He is getting old now definitely worth the ticket price.
@@vincentwhitley8197 He's ever the best one! I like his shows so much!
One of my favorite Artists, of all time! Got the January 2023 Full Moon drop...always awesome!
My personal fav artist since 1972. Am I getting old, maybe? Might be. Old but wise.... 🙂
One of the greatest experiences that i ever had in my life, i was there and after so many years it's still the best concert i've ever been to. Peter Gabriel at the peak of his powers with a band that leaves you with the mouth open even if you watch it from a small screen. Magic night, unique experience, great music from a master of his art.
My thoughts as well. I saw this tour in Pittsburgh, PA and nothing has ever come close to how stunned I felt leaving the arena.
Same. I saw his show in Ssn Francisco. It was so worth it in every way. It was the first time I saw him as I had seen Genesis just after Hackett left and often wondered what was the band like with Gabriel? So I took my brother who got me hooked on Genesis to see him and what an experience. I couldn’t believe he fell into the audience and they returned him after going around. He managed to keep his white jacket on without it being torn off him like in this video though. I was amazed. The performance was memorable. I could only imagine what he was like with Genesis. Peter Gabriel is amazing.
@@carologiwan501 Great Artist, stood the test of time.
I saw Peter Gabriel live at the Rosemont in Chicago it was fucking awesome
@@chrissanchez2998 Totally agree. Almost like a religious experience.
This is the track that got me into Peter's music, it was so intense it literally took my breath away. Even now after hundreds of listens, this track is still freaking intense as hell. To this day 'Lay Your Hands on Me' is my favourite Peter Gabriel song and PG4 is my favourite record.
PG4, mine as well :)
All the albums have a class of their own, one of my favourites is moribund the Bergermeister but love lay your hands on me and here comes the flood. Happy listening.
Still love this so much. The nerve to throw your self into a crowd. ❤️
Can't be doing that anymore 😂
don't know...as long as one kept a social distance....
....it would require levitating but hey it is @Peter ;)
The crowds have never failed to catch people ❤️🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
@@BamaSquirrel yes they have.
@@BamaSquirrel Peter actually tried this stunt with genesis in the 70s and it didn't go well. He broke his leg.
Seeing that live in 1987 in Chicago shook me to the core. Still amazing after over 35 years...
Saw him in Chicago in December 1986! Was that the one? My first concert, and I remember nothing of the actual show unfortunately, so wasn’t sure if he did crowd surfing. Would make me feel good to know that I saw that even if I don’t remember! 😊
@@chrish8091 He did, only I remember the crowd kind of tore him apart right away, so it didn't last as long as on this video.
Wow, interesting! Thanks for the history.
I was at that show in Chicago in 1987 also! I was in the back up high and I had heard about him doing the crowd surf for a few years, but back before phone cameras and the internet I had never seen it. It was totally cool to see it in person and be there!
Manu Katche is such and awesome and amazing drummer
oh yes I agree!
yesssssss!!!!!
It’s great to see an artist like Peter Gabriel: his joy in performing his art is always so lovely to see.
Tony Levin, the big one, his bass sound like a thunder!!! awasome....
Best and most creative bassist for his time
The strength of his voice never ceases to astound me. He’s still just as good today ✌🏻
totally! so good
I was at a concert where he wore the cordless microphone and let the audience pass him around back when they had general admission on the floor and I always was on the floor for any concert but got to pass him around like he did at the end of this song but he was singing as well and I wouldn't let him go and he said to me,dude you have to let go and pass me along it was so cool just didn't want to let go of my favorite solo performer. 😎
Year?
@@manco828 Saw him a couple of times roughly early 80's and he did that
@@sandrameads1124 👍👍
It's like the coming of Jesus Christ.. Peter Gabriel's a saint amongst the Sinners but we'll be fine.
I had a jacket so similar to his in the late 80's. :) I couldn't love this man more. He is in his own category. No one else like him!
👏👍🇮🇹
Best vocalist ever
I agree! ❤️
The triumphant 'OVER MEEEE!' at the end always gives me goosebumps.
oh I felt that!!
I was at this show in California I had my peter makeup and I got to touch his shoe! When he fell into US! Very emotional for me I Love You Peter , and yes this is my avatar I’m obviously a little obsessed with his music ask anyone that knows me !
cool Julie, I seen this show at Montral Forum, it was like a spiritual experience, very rare an artist is born into our world with such great love as Peter .
Oh cool…so where are you in this video??
I totally understand!
@@cbennett196631 He said he was at this show in California. This was filmed in Athens. He wasn’t at this concert, so why would he be in the video?
Who knows you? 😅
Best that ever lived, period.
!!!.
Him and Phil
Absolutely.
I saw Gabriel in 1977 to promote his first solo album at Winterland in SF. He sang Solsbuty Hill walking up and down the aisles. He was a master showman, blending his music with visuals.
Yes sir Ken that was incredible!
Thanks Peter Gabriel,
You're The Best!!!!! 🎶
I agree with you...
I first saw him do this when I was 16 .. at the Liverpool Empire
Its biblical .. he couldn't be anymore vulnerable and trusting 🙏🏿🩷
I saw this tour in 1986. I knew no Peter Gabriel except the So songs I'd heard on the radio which I thought were okay but I didn't love them or anything. The show had been sold out for weeks, and then on the radio they said they'd released 500 more tickets. I had a gut feeling I should go. He opened with San Jacinto, and by the end of the first song, I was HOOKED. By the end of the show, I was a Peter Gabriel fuck up for life!
We will never forget this part of the show when we were blown away by the balls it took to show us lay your hands on me
Thank you Peter Gabriel for bringing my life so much happiness and excellent music for the last 30 years of my my life😊
I saw Peter Gabriel (Pete as I called him, he called me Rob, haha no big deal) back in 1978. Man he was living! He was a masterclass performer that weaved his performance into his songs! Oh if i could go back
I saw this tour in Pittsburgh, PA. This many years later, it is still vivid in my memory and a true "moment" of my life. Incredible performer and show all around. As close to religious fervor as I've ever come. Thank you, Peter Gabriel and the fantastic musicians involved in your art who have given so much sound to my life!
Yes, at the Stanley Theater. At our concert Peter walked into the front seat area and stood on the back of a seat. The audience was a sea of hands reaching up to him. We didn't have any of that grabbing of clothes bullshit. Peter gives his audience a role to play; it's magical.
...in a word, Awesome!✊
Totally agree this man is a real legend in his work, truly amazing.
The utmost in trust. He clearly loves his fans.
How terrifying, I love Peter 💘
Peter Gabriel and this band played The Greek Theatre in Berkeley, California on this tour. He opened with Shake Hands, performed this song like this, finished with Biko. I remember being so moved, like the entire audience must have felt. One of the best shows ever (and I've seen many great shows) in an amazing outdoor arena that felt so intimate.
Quote from PG: "Well, there goes another jacket!" But seriously, I'm amazed by PG's performing and bravery all rolled into one here. Have seen this video before, but never with this stunningly perfect video quality.
That’s what gave his great mate Phil Collins the idea to call his album no jacket required. 😂 But seriously as well.
From the very beginning, I have liked PG's music. But when I was in one of his concerts in a small town in Germany in the 80ths, this song - and, in fact, also the crowdsurfing that can be seen in this video - has deeply impressed me. It has been a great exprience that also influenced me, to visit the other concerts like in this month in Hamburg. This video brings me back to the former concert, back to a great time and back to legendary perfomer. Also my son (30) shares my enthusiasm and was with me at the concert. But just mentioning the impessive effect of this song is just half of the truth. Acutally, there are many more that I am proud to listen to PGs music. His songs are a great contribution to the world and my life. E. g. Biko is not just a song, it is a hymne that electrifys the audience, it casts a spell and let the audience become one. Now the songs are very different to others of the past, but great in the same way and I hope, we will get much more of this music.
You are part of my youth and of my son's childhood, and for sure, you will also be part of our future.
Thank you, Peter, for your music and your constant efforts to make the world a little better!

Such an amazing musician we named our son after him! Honest 🎤 🎹
You called him Angel Gabriel? 😂
What a performance! Incredible! Unforgettable!
There is no one who writes like Peter Gabriel. While his output of material is small compared to other artists, I don’t think there is another Artist who puts as much emotion into his music. Powerful Video of one of my favourite songs. I have seen his band 3 times and I swear if I closed my eyes at any of those concerts I could swear I was sitting in my living room listening..
PG i saw him 4 x 1988 and 90 and 2000,s is the kiiii ing. Indeed w T. Levin & Manu K.
The power and emotion in this song. Beyond words.
Got the privilege of seeing; Plays Live and Secret World tours...also hugged his mother in gratitude.
He trusts ❤️ The magic that is Peter Gabriel 💫

Manu Katche is sublime 👏👏👏 Thanks again Peter, the best!
it's incredible... after the trust-fall, he's being passed around and he's still making eye contact and connecting with people. a one-in-a-generation performer. I dunno... maybe one in a lifetime.
What a brave guy! 🎶🎧👏
Peter Gabriel. What a beautiful song, you voice is feautiful, you interpretation is wonderful. You are Genesis, you are the creation of the best in music. Congratulations, success.
so much energy
Wonderful! There goes another jacket!
A highlight of a great life, this performance at the Greek Theater in Berkeley. The crowd was chill, the experience was spiritual.
Thank you Peter.
Every time I watch this video I get emotional.
1986, at Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey I saw Peter at outdoor venue. It was packed, I remember vividly during Lay Your Hands on Me, as he backed into the crowd, surfing on top about 20 feet in, some idiot ripped off his cordless mic, he made his way back on stage to a hot mic. After that, I don't remember much, it was my first and last getting trashed from blackberry Brandy, my uncle had a drive me home as I was passed out in back seat.
I saw him do this song in an amphitheater. He walked towards the back on the tops of the seats. He came between me and my friend Paul. Placed his his hands on our shoulders for balance. I placed my hand on his back so he wouldn’t fall backward. Paul did the same. Totally cool.
He's a brilliant artist. Simple as.
Gifted musician, your music is high in my esteem
One of my all-time favourite Peter Gabriel songs
4 days ago, in Athens in 1987... he does looks good 33 years later as the one of a kind legend he will always be... blessed are we... 🌞
Now days its more like....
"You're contagious (Get your hands off me). You are sneezing (Get your hands off me). Please don't hug me (Get your hands off me).
You're amazing. Your voice is like heaven and your stage performance is always exhilarating. Your music guides me. Bad day? Time to put on some Peter Gabriel and let it all melt away. Thank you for being awesome.
Ugh...scammers!
1:05 Going bald way back in 1987. Now I don't feel so bad looking at the shower drain today. Thanks Pete!
One of the greatest entertainers of the 20th century
Audience Participation at it's finest!😉
The Guru, had to wait until 1993 for the first time to see him, I only missed about 20 amazing years...ugh.
I've been so blessed to have seen Peter on 3 different tours for 3 different albums. I believe the first time I saw him do this was at Roseland Ballroom in NYC on either his '84 or '86 tour. To say flabbergasted would be a gross understatement.
Manu Katche .. this is biblical 🙏🏿
I've carried Peter 🤍
Best. Trust fall. Ever.
Hello Peter!!! Oh yes amazing! You are sublime Peter... Thank you so much for many emotions. I wish you a wonderful weekend maestro. Cheers 😉👍🎶
When I saw him play in Southampton, back in the late seventies he actually had wireless microphone and was singing whilst crowd surfing 😊
There is only one Peter Gabriel.

I was in Rotterdam in 87 stage front. I was blown away
He did this when I saw him at the Hammersmith Odeon. I got to hold is ankle!
So wish he would do some more gigs. His crowd surfing days may be over but he is an amazing performer. Maybe after all this Covid stuff is over he’ll play again?
😃👍
BLESSED BE his TRUST!
WOW! ... Talent. Musical Genius. *And* Courage! ... Man - Oh - Man. ... How I wish you would come to perform here in Seattle. ... This was an amazing show! Saw it in Milwaukee, When they passed him overhead thru the crowd you could feel the trust & togetherness. The audience & musician became one. It still brings tears to my eyes.

Did the PG boost a couple times over the years. When I rushed the stage in Dallas, people in the audience had NO CLUE what was going to happen... Most intense concert experience ever...
Such a compelling and charismatic performer, his voice is so raw and alive with emotion
Once upon a time... My first live experience 🤗
Got to touch his shoulder 😉
Le bon vieux temps 🧡
Blue-eyed soul voice...❤️
that would be Todd Rundgren, or Daryl Hall.
a.k.a. Lay Your Glands On Me, according to Tony Levin, after singing that line hundreds of times while PG went crowdsurfing every night ..!
Fasziniert mich immer wieder 👌❤️

One of the first concerts i ever saw was the Peter Gabriel tour in 1987. It was this song that is forever burned in my brain as one of the greatest things ive ever seen live. Its no surprise that decades later Peter remains my favorite artist. It is worth noting that rewatching this video STILL gives me goosebumps. Most folks dont know this track.
