I used to walk through the settlement on my way home from school back in the late 50s and early 60s. It always had and always will have a special place in my heart. To me it personifies the struggle of people against persecution and oppression and the faith that drove them on - why on earth they chose to settle in Droylsden is another story!
Colin Ardron thanks for watching Colin, it’s much appreciated. Such a beautiful place it must have been lovely back in the 50’s! Haha yeah it baffles me as to why droylsden
I spent most of My childhood crossing the settlement as I lived just around the corner at No5 Broadway. Our back garden backed on to the cemetery , which was quite spooky. We used to dare each other to creep through the fencing as kids which would take you into the cemetery and up to the top end of Broadway as the road spiralled around itself. Anyway we always went to the Moravian church's Spring, Autumn and Winter Fayres as well as their Bonfire nights on Nov 5th. My Grandparents also lived at 22 Fairfield Avenue from the 60s until 1983, I spent many an evening having tea there with them , after school finished. The settlement was linked to the Avenue by ratter spooky pathway with the schoolgrounds in one side and the graveyard on the other. I hated walking down it coming home from school in the winter time or at night as it just had one lamp at the top end of it and a small one in the middle, it used to scare me as a kid. lol We used to play on Fairfield Highschool getting up to all kinds of mischief , like making swings over what we called "The Froggy pond" , I was always falling in it getting covered in mud and winding up with Me Mum plaiting me legs! lol In the spring and summer , it was the swing. In the winter when it was frozen we'd sledged down the little hill and go whizzing right accross it! But back to the settlement itself. I remember there used to be a museum at the bottom end of Brethren ST close to the school that had open days and Spring fetes, where they'd sell home made products and there'd be Morris men dancing as well. I also remember as far back as the late 70s/early 80s My Grand-parents who live ion Fairfield Avenue, used t save the news-papers up every week and in a Saturday they'd take them round to a special workshop in the settlement where they'd recycle them. Which when you think back was pretty unheard of back then. I don't know what they did with it or made with it, I just remember going with My Grandma and Great Aunty round there on Saturday morning as a kid before we went into Droylsden or Ashton shopping. A wonderful place to spend your childhood back then, I didn't really appreciate it as much as I probebly should have as a kid, It was/is a beautiful area. Lovely to see the grounds again. Thank you for sharing this video. So glad to see it being preserved.this way. Whenever I have a really lovely dream, it's almost always about me being a kid again, on My bike in the Spring time, with the cherry blossom blooming on the trees on Broadway and around Fairfield Avenue and The settlement , riding through the "spooky" footpath and just having fun 🙂 Thanks for your video. The memories have come flooding back. THANK YOU! 😀
There is a moravian settlement in pudsey ,leeds I worked at the school , there is a graveyard at the back of the building and apparently the mortuary was where the nursery is now I felt spooked when I went in there . You walk through the village and it's so peaceful like time stands still I understand why they chose that particular spot to build and live there .. love your videos keep them coming 😊
veronica fallows that sounds fascinating Veronica & I never knew about that place in Pudsey. I can’t thank you enough for watching the vids and showing an interest. Thanks so much 👍🏼🐒
Just doing a catch-up on some of your back catalogue and wow, what an incredible little place! Isn't it great how it's been preserved both in brick and in atmosphere, I can't get over it. Brilliantly researched and presented video as always Anthony. Thank you.
Hi Padraic, yes an absolute gem of a place that is steeped in history. It is very strange walking around their though. A beautiful place nether the less 👍🏼 take care pal
Very good video and background info to the this piece of history. My doctor's surgery was part of this settlement at the entrance opposite where the statues stand. I used to go there with my mother in the late 60's and 70's. I got to know about this site when Granada Studios did the Jeremy Brett, Sherlock Holmes series in the 80's. I often recognise the buildings when I re-watch this series. Fascinating view of what went on all those years ago. Thanks for all the effort you have put into this "walk down memory lane."
adamstuart4156 i could tell by walking around that I was a very nice place to live. A real good community spirit...something that is becoming less and less in today’s society, sadly. Thanks for sharing your memories adam🐒👍🏼
Thanks for another interesting story DM, it's always good when people of another culture choose your country to live in. Must have been very hard for them as well, leaving your own country for another, trying to adjust to another culture. Very neat buildings. Thanks for sharing 👍👍
Interesting video i never heard of that communitie . My auntie used to lock her front door with a key hanging on a string on the inside of letterbox so you could grab it and pull through the letterbox and unlock !!! Talk bout communities that was nice to each others .As for legs i better leave that one 😆 Cheers Rob

Thanks for this video. We are doing our family history from New Zealand and find we have a family line from the Farfield Moravian Settlement. Thanks for the informative and thoughtful commentary. You made the place come alive for us.
Amazing video. One subject I know nothing about. Thanks for enlightening me. The video is about the people who live in a community who worship god. you say your not a believer . I say keep your heart open like you do with your videos. Again thank you and well done.

We were (sort of) Catholics. But that wasn't the thing about trust. It was neighbourhood, not religion. My Mum or my Nana would send me at the age of five, on an errand down Marple street to Ella's or Tommy Cheedle's corner shop with a shilling, or florin, or may be a half-crown coin to buy four ounces of boiled ham, or half a pound of bacon, or six ounces of cheese, or a pat of butter, sure that I would be safe and the shop keeper totally honest. They were all just great people. Some people totaday would call it "solidarity". But then, they would never have heard that word, and would have had no use for it. It was just the way they lived, the way we were.

There was a doctors surgery just before you entered the square, off the main road in the 1980s early 90`s . Does anyone remember it?
