A very interesting video of Ardwick when I was a child. Born in 1947 and now 73 and living in Anglesey but trying to chase my roots. Lived Roseberry Street and attended St Jerome's church Manchester 11. Thanks to all the people who have contributed to this and still reassured by the community spirit and the integrity of the adults when I was a child.. Ian
Memories of my childhood, I live in Australia now but those days are diamonds. Although poor we were rich in love, friendship and sadly it has gone but great memories, thank you for sharing.

Thank you for this. I was born in 1961 I lived in Clandon Street 1962 to 64 then Blackthorn Street 64 to 66, i was very young so memories are vague but this is just wonderful.
Hi Beverley I’m doing some research right now on Ardwick 1960’s. I’m looking for information on a street that’s knocked down now called ‘Dallas Street’ is there anything could tell me about this?
Born 1944, Collyhurst, went to St Augustine's school, used to go swimming at Harperhey baths, went to AUSTRALIA 1960. Glad to get out, but I had a great childhood .
Many of my ancestors came from Ardwick Green and, although I grew up in Bolton, this photo collage and comments brought back fond memories of life in the cramped terraced houses of the North West. Thank you
My parents came from Beswick, I think that was nearby. I've still got one of those huge long photos of my dad's class at school they were born 1913 & 1916. I grew up a few miles down the okdham road in failsworth. When we moved into the house in the early 1950s we had a black lead fireplace with an oven on the side and a hib which went over the fire. We had gas street lights and all the mums used to donkeystone their steps on Friday nights. They talk about pollution now but then the canal was full if rubbish and the air was thick with smog in autumn & winter. We played out with no coat on down air raidnshelters and bomb sites ....was a happy time, carefree and safe for children and women.
Brought back lovely memories, I went to Ross place from 1961 to 64 lived on Hyde Road not far from the Hipperdrome my brothers and sister also went to the same school, my older brother went to St Nicholas.
I was born in Blackley and walked in the whit week walks every year with St Oswaldos in Collyhurst, I lived at 118 Hyde Road in 1953 my mother was Manager of a sweet shop facing Hyde Road bus station called Crossley’s .I then lived in Birch Street near Belle Vue. I went on to live inside Belle Vue in 1971 .I was manager of the booking office in Belle Vue ….I also worked at the Manchester Hippodrome Ardwick Green when I was a teenager …All the old traditions have gone now …Ardwick is a mess now and the Hippodrome has long since gone ….I have since lived in Belgium, France and Vancouver Canada… I now live in Hale Cheshire…….81 now but don’t feel old . Best wishes to you all.
The photo of the drayman was in Cranworth street Chorlton on Medlock.I was born in the sixth house on the left as you look at it,if i remember correctly Mrs Rhodes was our next door neighbour a wonderfull jolly woman who always had a jam butty for the local kids. Poor but happy thanks for rekindling old memories.
I go to visit Gorton Monastery on the last Sunday of every month and a friend of mine gives a very interesting talk and film show on the history of Belle. Vue……..It’s very good .This is,posted 20 th November 2022.
I lived off of Brunswick St, across from the Apollo in the 70's - 80's. Went to Medlock Infants & juniors, & then Nicholls. Great to see Stockport & Hyde Rd before the slum clearances. I remember the stories of the battles between Nicholls & Greg's, even though Greg's had been knocked down by then! We used to be out all day back then, from morning to night, exploring, getting into trouble! I loved growing up in Ardwick, & know the whole area, but if you was to ask me where the boundaries are, going into Bradford, Ancoats, Medlock, Longsight, Plymouth Grove, & W. Gorton etc, I really wouldn't be able to tell you!! Thanks for posting.
My grandfather les sutton wrote the definitive three volume book on the history of ardwick. Wrote it in the 1970s and copies are in manchester Central library. Self published it for family and manchester libraries so not too many copies
Born Ardwick 1954, parents Margaret Jean & Derek Ravenscroft, remember the whit walks going to the Apollo as a kid, we were moved out to Heald Green, Cheadle. We lived in Grans house, think it was Ardwick Terrace.
@@paulandsueg Im nearly 70 now and sorry just do not remember, but one time, I think 1965 we queued around the apollo to see Mary Poppins, cant understand why that comes to mind cause we went there many times. if fact i do not remember if we were still living in Ardwick or had moved to Heald Green, but we did visit Ardwick regularly for family and friends, plus Dad played the trumpet in a band near by.
I used to go to Nicholls Ardwick in the early seventies for part of third year and all fourth year, great memories even though I did break my knee there.
I lived in Nicholls St from c1956 to 1965. Went to Ross Place primary and liked the photo at approx 4.05 mins. It was probably the year below me as I recognise a boy in the middle (I think his name was david) who was the younger brother of Philip Lloyd. The teacher on the right was Mr Yates. I can't remember the headmasters name (on the left) although I do remember getting the strap from him.
Moriah Buckley was our great grandmother who lived in Tipping Street (which is now Mancunian Way). She had 3 daughters Sarah, Agnes & Marie and a son Harry. Sarah was our grandmother (Andrew Holmes and Carol Sloan).
There is a picture in this video of Ross Place School 1958 ( the time frame is 4.04),.....Does anyone have a still of this class pic .My name was Kay Sullivan then and this is the only pic I have ever seen of my class,my mam was so poor, she couldn't even afford to buy any class pics......appreciate you getting back to me.Amazing I remember everybodies name here.....My name now is Kay Bateman and I live in the States.....Really enjoyed watching this, such wonderful childhood memories,,what a de ja vu .In appreciation K .

Thank you so much for sharing this fabulous video of Ardwick.
Fantastic video of Ardwick , thank you for sharing.
This remarkable film with memories illustrates graphically how much we have lost: the world has become utterly empty by comparison.
I agree
That area was erased in the 60s and 70s: much of the property needed clearing but the council-built replacement housing was itself substandard.
Thank you so much for this fantastic video.
My Father was born in Ardwick in 1928 and went to St A's and St Greggs, he died in 2012, how I wish I had the chance to show him this.
