Oh yes, this is a must-make classic salad for the holidays! And then in January, you can make the chicken Waldorf salad version for a full-meal weekly meal prep. What other salads are you guys serving up for the holidays? xo - Lisa
My Grandma used to make it with celery, sweet onions, walnuts, sweet apples, mayo, salt and a sprinkling of cinnamon. Sometimes she would keep out the cinnamon and add curry powder along with bits of left over meat.
Hi Lisa! I pre-ordered your book. Is there suppose to be a download with it? I wasn't sure but saw a note about that before I ordered. I'm so excited for this cookbook!
My mother was born in 1908 and got her Waldorf Salad recipe from HER mother. We use the 'dump'' method in my family so I'll list her ingredients but I have no measurements. We don't use mayonnaise at all in my family. Walnuts, apples, celery, crushed canned pineapple in syrup. Take the juice from the pineapple can and put it in a double boiler and add cornstarch for thickening-this becomes your dressing and is plenty sweet enough. We have this every winter holiday and have for all my 73 years and always get compliments.
I remember my grandmother thickening pineapple juice plus lemon juice and spreading this over a avacado/walnut gelatin salad. The bottom part of the salad was creamy green colored, so probably had cream cheese or sour cream in it. She rarely used a recipe, as she raised 15 children plus cooked for farm hands, and recipes weren’t written in the big quantities she cooked in. Thanks for rebooting my memories!
Wow - that sounds delicious! I used to love canned pineapple and would mix it with cottage cheese which was surprisingly good. In fact, the stores used to sell cottage cheese and pineapple in the olden days. Doing the math, my mother was born in 1928 and I'm 70 so your parents had you rather late in life, especially for that era. But, it's always nice communicating with someone who is actually older than I am 🤷♀
Thank You so much for sharing Your family's recipe.. I love this salad just the way it is, but adding pineapple to everything is a big hit in our family. I'm excited to try it. Happy Holidays.
Great recipe as always. Just like the lemony lentil & chickpea soup. Will definitely be making both (love my soups, always a must have in the fridge); but the salad looks like smth I would consider serving for a special dinner. I’m thinking the New Year’s 😉😉🎄 Thank you, Lisa!☺️
My Grandmother was given this recipe when she was a child, in Mystic Conn, 1908-1910. Her family owned the Oviatt Hat Company, in New York City. We always make it with Shrimp, but the rest is the same.
Great recipe. Just a little tip or call it a request. All of the best youtube cooking channels make a point to either have the ingredients and portions listed in the video description or they list them all together and the amounts somewhere in the video usually the beginning “you’ll need ….” That way your audience doesn’t have to hear that you can use green grapes to make a stylish monochromatic salad” 10 times because they keep forgetting or getting interrupted when they are trying to find out how many apples to use. Personally my kitchen is chaotic, there’s a million things going on cats stealing ingredients off the counter and people who decide that moment is when they remembered that thing they forgot to ask you about. It just makes life so much easier. I subscribe to those channels just because they do that. I can go back once and get what I need to know. Anyway keep up the good work. Great recipes.
My favorite variation is a sweeter apple, like a Gala, and dried cranberries instead of grapes. The tartness of the cranberries balance the sweetness of the apple nicely. A year-round favorite!
WOW This is on my list for Christmas day! Having hot Christmas days here in Australia this will be most wholesome as well as refreshing. Thanks for sharing your spin on it. Have a most wonderful day. Cheers Donna
One of my favorite fruit salads, and I've tasted it in so many variations! I'll toast the nuts the next time; I always skipped that step. Cranberries are a must for me, and now I'm also intrigued with adding chicken, which I never dared to do with this salad before. Lots of things to try today! Thanks for sharing it, Lisa!
Good catch! The video is correct... I meant to go back and change that on the recipe card (which I'll do right now). But you can use more mayo or more yogurt, depending on personal preference as well. :) x
Wonderful salad. I also sometimes season the dressing with curry powder, use chicken and all the goodies, and it is a wonderful curry salad. Then i sometimes use chopped broccoli with all the goodies plus some crumbled bacon, and presto…you have a wonderful broccoli salad. For the holidays, my family will ask me to bring “one of your…you know all the stuff in it…salad”. Thanks for the inspiration. I know this one is a good one!
I did this salad today , that was soooo good 😋. Me and my husband like it , was really great. I did mine with coconut 🥥 yogurt since I did not had other yogurt, and I used raw pecans to keep the maximum nutrients……. Was still good 😌 👍.
A really great recipe for an exceptional salad. I am really amazed that, contrary to all clichés, such wholesome and healthy recipes come from the USA. I will definitely try. From me another tip for the fastest mayonnaise in the world, which is even better preserved than the original: 100 ml milk in a high container. 200 plant oil on top. Place the hand blender on the bottom of the vessel, mix and slowly pull up. It's going to be perfect.
This looks amazing and I’m prepping it today (without the chicken) for Thanksgiving. I’ll make it again in a few weeks WITH the chicken. Can’t wait to try both versions!
This is one of our favorite chicken salads. I haven't tried this sause mixture yet. I've always used Hellmann's mayo. But I'm going to try this sause for our 4th of July party this year. Fingers crossed! It sounds great.
What temperature do I cook the chicken at? I assume very high as I saw you turn up the temp to 400? I assume you meant 400 for 20 minutes? Looks like a delicious chicken Waldorf!
That didn't exist in the GDR. We make Waldorf with chiccore, walnuts and canned tangerines. Oh dear, so long ago. I do not understand English. Google helps.
I love Waldorf Salad (actually, I think it is just about my favorite) and I plan to make it ASAP. Since I have some slow-cooked chicken in the fridge (Greek Lemon Chicken with Potatoes) I think I will try the salad with the chicken (sans potatoes, of course). Thank you. P. S. I pre-ordered your cook book because of this video.
Just made one with no mayo, just sour cream, honey and lemon juice for dressing. I want to try it with parsley and maybe a pineapple version as another commenter mentioned.
Going to try this with some plant-based mayo and without the chicken as I have a family history of Cancer and need to avoid all the Choline in eggs and igf-1 in meat---thanks for posting
Oh, gosh, this is a recipe from my childhood! Thanks for reminding me - I have all the ingredients, and a nice leftover (oops, 'prepped'!) breast of rotisserie chicken in the freezer waiting to jump into a dish! Thanks, Lisa.
@@Downshiftology Hi Beautiful-i am hosting a brunch and this will pair so well-again and again you continue to amaze me and all of us-sending you a huge hug and Grazie Grazie Grazie(btw my Mom loved the squash and all the dishes from you
This is strange, my daughter has just gone away to a conference for a few days and I said to her, I will make waldorf when you get home! He he. We always add taragon to our salad and it shows how many ways people have their own way of making this! Thanks for all the fab recipes. Take care x
My mother used Miracle Whip instead of mayo, and mixed it with milk and sugar. Trust me, it was perfect. I've tried to replicate it and have never been able to get it right.
Yummy! You mentioned you meal prep for a few days. Does it maintain its freshness? Planning to serve for Thanksgiving and need to make it beforehand. Thank you.
Our family made this since I was a child in the 50’s. I make it all the time. But, a bit different. But, basically, the same…sugar vs honey, no parsley, & I use raisins instead of grapes, 3 apples & my preference of apples.
Thanks for the inspiration. Definitely making this next weekend. Probable go with adding Chicken (love the look of the rub 🙂) and then dried cranberries, sultanas (softer and sweeter than raisins) and fresh pitted cherries. Can't wait !!😁
Crazy, but this is something I’ve never made! How did that happen? But, thanks to your awesome video, I’m making a grocery list now, and including ingredients to make this. Thanks for another yummy idea for the holiday!

Sounds interesting but as a dressing I would try blended pineapple with coconut yogurt I think that could could be a little more exotic 🤓 😋

What do you suggest if my family does not like celery?
Water chestnuts have a similar crunch. :)
@@Downshiftology that is a great suggestion. I never thought about that
Added this recipe on my Thanksgiving menu! Thanks Lisa for sharing this beautiful and versatile salad 🥰

This would be great with leftover diced Turkey breasts the day after Thanksgiving! 😋
Yes, absolutely!
Salads are actually my favourite food! There are so many variations. Waldorf is a great Summer one.
I haven’t had this salad in years and I don’t really know why. I loved it so much. Thanks for bringing this one back to my attention.

Yes, toasting really adds that extra touch of flavor, give it a try! And see what you think with the chicken as well. :) x
My mom's recipe had celery, walnuts, apples, small marshmallow. The dressing was mayo, sugar or splenda and water til thin mixture.
Our family adds mini marshmallows too.
Your printed recipe calls for 2T mayo and 1/4 cup of yogurt….video says 3T of each. Please let me know as I’m planning to make this. Thanks!

Enjoy the recipe!
I grew up on my families Waldorf Salad. It had apples, banana, walnut and a blue cheese dressing.
Mmm haven't had that in years but going to make it! Maybe with a touch of blue cheese
I made a lunch out of this today and YUM! I really like that dressing vs plain mayo. Thank you!!
I remember raisins being substituted for grapes when they weren’t available. A simple, easy and delicious salad.
or chopped dates

For Christmas I substitute chopped canned chestnuts for the walnuts.
Great sub!
DAMN. Every ingredient i'm fine with except celery. Or cucumber. Can't stomach either...

@Downshiftology can i use beets instead of grapes? Or will that overpower the apples?
Omgosh - that’s looks delicious Lisa !
Thank you ❤️

I love a good Waldorf like this😍
You really can't go wrong with it. Enjoy!
I was going to make this after watching, but I looked around the kitchen and realized I was out of woldorfs .
I think cranberries or raisins would work with that if you arent a fan of grapes (i'm not)
We use sour cream with a spoon of sugar to make the dressing at Ruby Tuesday.
I like chunks of creamy sharp blue cheese in mine !!!!
Made and added the salad to our Thanksgiving menu. It was a hit. Delicious!
I will try your salad. Can you recommend a good knife set?

Yummy! You mentioned you meal prep for a few days. Does it maintain its freshness? Planning to serve for Thanksgiving and need to make it beforehand. Thank you.
It's definitely best fresh if serving for guests, but I'm less particular for myself - ha! But it does stay crunchy for several days.
