    for the avoiding checks point, just remember knights are the opposite of bishops; they change square colour every move, as well as having limited range and unblockability.

    • @an18yearoldmongolianguy
      @an18yearoldmongolianguy 3 месяца назад +8

      Basically, put your king on the same color square as your opponent’s knight if you don’t wanna be checked by it
      To avoid getting forked by a knight, remember to put your pieces and king on different colored squares from each other - that’s the best counter for knight forks
      In essence, when you’re dealing with knights you always want to keep an eye on the squares your pieces are on, since that’s what knights are all about - they’re pieces that specialize in square color play

    • @QDWhite
      @QDWhite 3 месяца назад +1

      Knights are kind of the opposite of every piece. They can attack every other piece from squares those pieces can't reach.

    I got the queen sac, knight smothered checkmate in a game for the first time yesterday. Was so excited lol.
    I’ve done that 50 times in puzzles, but never see it in game.

      @drewfenton866 3 месяца назад +1

      That’s awesome! I have never been able to pull it off in a game, but I’ve gotten mated like that a few times 😬

    • @chess26622
      @chess26622 3 месяца назад +1

      I never had the smothered mate moments, but I had another way of rare checkmates. Its like Kd7+, the king has a rook on c8, and three pawns on c7, b7, and a7, and it mist to gi to h8. We have two connected rooks on the first horizontal, and one of them stays on a1, and we sac the rook for a pawn, and mate the king with another rook.
      I hope I explained it normally, I met this mate many times in puzzles, but very rarely in real games

    Your videos are SO helpful. I'm in the sort of beginner-intermediate stage, where a lot of the advanced guides seem too theoretical, and the opener tutorials are usually too rigid because the opponent plays weirdly. But the beginner videos are too basic. These videos hit that perfect sweet spot!

    I won using the Traxler today during a bullet game. My opponent was completely unprepared and resigned 10 moves in. They only had like 9 seconds left and I had only used 9 seconds. I got 100% accuracy and a brilliant for the knight sacrifice on g3 move. I learned it all from your channel. Thanks!

      @@RepentInReprise I know right? It's so wild. I cross my fingers every game as black hoping white tries it. As white, I cross my fingers hoping black allows a four knights game so I can use the Halloween gambit. Again, something I learned from this channel.

    There is another important knight trick to think about: Forks. When you see pieces on the same colored squares, there may often be a potential fork. This is also an important clue for avoiding being forked yourself. One final tip is that if a piece is diagonally two squares away from another piece, even though they are on the same color, there will never be a knight fork. It’s the same idea that Nelson showed to avoid checks, just applied to forks using a little more forethought.

    • @ThaddeusMcMonster
      @ThaddeusMcMonster 3 месяца назад +6

      I can't tell you how many rook vs knight endgames I've lost to forks. The simple strategy - never put your rook on the same color square as your king- no need to calculate anything, you cannot be forked.

    7:33 what you call the sneaky pawn grab, i call "The boomerang trick". it can also be done with other pieces like a bishop, if the bishop can grab something and in an exhange and that piece the bishop is grabbing looks defended by for intsance a pawn, if the opponent then has to do a intremezzo, capturing something, the bishop can boomerang back and take back on a piece they took.. saving the bishop from beeing captured by the pawn. I call it the boomerang as its a pices you throw out to the dogs usualy its a discovery attack, then it come back having a double meal, when they did not get time to take it.

    The other condition to look out for in the Legall’s trap is the d5 square has to be undefended also, so if black proved his pawn to c6, or the knight to e7, that would also prevent the mate as the knight needs to get to d5 to deliver the coup-de-gras. I’ve lost track of you many games I’ve won with this trick, even against higher rated players. The nifty part is understanding the tactic so you can get here from other king pawn openings. 😊

    There's another easy way to avoid checks that I will use in long-term endgame positions. You have the 2 squares diagonally away but if you move three squares away straight away from the knight, exact same effect and if I'm playing defensively that is sometimes slightly better because you can make it very difficult for their knights to have an impact when they are in your position.

    Legal's trap also works with Nc6 (pedantic comment, it's not pronouced like the "legal law", I think it's "leg -gall")
    With Nc6 though, you have to play h3 and if the bishop goes back to bh4, you can knight capture in the middle (still the best move). If they take the queen you got the trap. If the knight on c6 takes the knight, you can take the bishop. The difference is that with h3 pushing the bishop back, the black knight capture will not defend the bishop. It's still +2/+3 for white

      @MattTrevett Usually people disclose that it's a paid advertisement, since that isn't said I'd be inclined to consider that he is simply promoting the game for free.
      Other RUclipsrs I watch occasionally advertise something without gaining compensation for it, especially if it's a game resource that can be used for free.
