Therefore, Bb2 is a common and effective move in the French Defense: Horwitz Attack can be countered by playing 3...exd4 accepting the gambit they can play 3...NF6, threatening to target the d4-pawn. Black can also play 3...d4 to challenge white's control of the center. This Gambit was invented by Richard Reti. Reti first played this line against Geza Maroczy in 1920. Many GMs have played this variation. This is absolutely not a Gotham opening.
Thomas Johansson has written a book about 2.b3 about 20 years ago. It's called The Fascinating Réti Gambit. So I've known since a long time: 2...b6 or 2.. c5.
A nice way to relegate your opponent's 100 hours of studying the French to the trash heap. And one reader's suggestion that 3...Nc6 gives Black a slight advantage (a dubious claim - being completely equal is not equivalent to having any kind of advantage) may be valid to some extent, but how likely is your opponent to even consider that move? And even if he does, I'm fine with an equal position where I can expect to have good winning chances if I'm the better player - since my opponent can no longer play the first five to fifteen moves from memory. One caveat - White should be prepared to play the Snyder Sicilian should Black play 2...c5.
Being equal means white is losing since they would've likely wasted a move that put him in that position because the white pieces start out with a clear advantage.
I’m new to chess, what if they don’t follow this at all and play queen to F6? Moved pawn to c3 to cover but that shuts down the plan entirely how do I punish the early queen move?
This is a cool line, though i find it a bit passive if my opponent plays the move 3 c5 very early to break my center ( in fact i play this line), me personally i find 3 Nc3 BB4 the Winawer the most fun line against the French. On a side note I think a underrated opening that works is the Trompowsky Attack with d4 Nf6 which i get very interesting playable positions no matter what my opponent plays after Nf6
In the 4...Nf6 main line, 7g4 isn't really the best move, but an attempt to take Black into tricky territory. And it prompted an immediate inaccuracy in response, 7...c5. Stockfish prefers 7...a5 or 7...Nc6, and assesses Black as better. 7...Nc6 looks fairly obvious, so I think that line needs looking at if you are to play this as White. 9...Nc6 was another inaccuracy, 9...Bd7 was better. Then 10...f5 is another inaccuracy. 10 ...Nd4 is best, though that's not so easy to find. White is now somewhat better, because it made only one (deliberate) inaccuracy (7g4), and otherwise played like Stockfish, while Black has made 3 inaccuracies. The first poor move by Black is 11...a6. It wouldn't occur to me to play that. 11...Nh5, Nd4 and Bd7 are all playable and Bd7 at least is obvious. 12...Qc7 is another poor move, 12...Nh5 was now necessary, though perhaps that isn't easy to see. 13...Nf8 is obviously poor, 13...Bd8 was necessary and reasonably obvious. Though Black still has some tough defending to do. If you can take your opponent somewhere they haven't been, along trappish lines that you know, then you are in a good place to prompt inaccuracies and worse from them. Even strong GMs can fall into the traps unprepared. But ultimately this isn't really a good line. Best play leads only to equality, and you can do better than that against the French. If your opponent is a regular French player and has sensibly had a look at the "how to beat the French" lines around, they won't be surprised. They will either know how to equalise, or else have their own surprise in return for you.
The b3 Bb2 line is not bad, but it is calculated only at Black taking at e4. Instead of 3....de, Black can play 3. ...a6, postpone the decision, and possibly play d4 and c5 later, burying the bishop. This is the reason why stronger players avoid the line

Bb2 Nc6....one recommendation might by 4. e5 but after 4....d4 the e5 pawn is a bit astray. 4. exd5 exd5 looks very okay for Black, 4. Qe2 is interesting....I'd say 3...Nc6 is a pretty good reply to 2. b2 :-\
