Terrific doco - we (Schtung) owed a lot to the Enz, they paved the way. Happy memories of their Wellington visits, Phil dropping by our house on The Crescent, lunch at The Matterhorn in Cuba St. chatting about 'these Supertramp guys'.
I loved the Swingers, and loved the songs. I also thought Phil's voice had amazing range and was completely unique. I remember a longer doco on the Swingers that used to be on RUclips, although in bad quality. Would love to see it again.
I'm from Liverpool England and love most progressive rock and have to say that I've just got on the mental notes album and think it kicks ass, best song is spellbound, the singing is like family and the guitar and bass line is very similar to what floyd were doing on animals
Looks like Youth at 12:28 that crazy mutha, lol. There's something about smallish island's that create's unique artist's and music, UK, Jamaica (as Neil said) and NZ , not Australia though that's too big ! Great to watch vid thanks Mr.Phudd.
"Like I'd had an affair and broken the magic circle." That's exactly what happened with the Strokes. Something definitely breaks when one goes off and records a solo.
Have all the respect in the world for Neil but Crowded House is just a regular band - Split Enz was a remarkable one of a kind side show pop circus that will always stand alone.
Bones is playin a Kramer aluminum neck bass...people loved those for a minute in the 80s...I think they sound like crap and the neck is so heavy you let go of the neck and it dives to the ground:-(
Phil is undoubtedly a unique musician, extremely talented, amazing songwriter and very artistic is so many ways 💙🎸

Loved Schnell Fenster too. Viva Phil!
#RIP Buster Stiggs and Bones Hillman of The Swingers
Neil has never not been adorable. The world was never gonna keep a guy like him down.
Nice story! Good job, Finn Bros.!
It aint what you dance is a great song.
The Enz, The Swingers and The Fensters have always been in my top ten kiwi bands. Guess that makes me a Phil fan by osmosis alone. :)
Add The Mutton Birds and the Feelers to that list, and you've got some mighty music there.

I recall the video in question. It was something the “The Making of Practical Jokers”. I wonder what has happened to it?
Great doco...all three parts.
Amazing, was unaware of all the links between the guys in these bands, plus another fave band...
that footage of the bowl of brooklands is great around the 5 min mark. New Plymouth!

paulo!
Phill is a national treasure. That he wasn't invited to the Split Enz reunions was spiteful and mean.
Not so sure about the Travis Bean bass..
Andrew McClennan was mentioned. Any relation to Grant?
Andrew's from New Zealand whereas Grant's from Queensland. I'd be surprised.
