  • *Update 8/4/16, I have had two problems with the Powercore 16000. The first, is that the USB connection became unseated. It sunk into the case. The second issue I had is that I took this charger on travel and it totally bricked out. No lights, no charge, no power. I tried to connect it to different micro USBs, gave it a few days, nothing so I had to throw it out. My advice is to go with the 2nd Gen Astro E5 for these quality issues which I have not seen in other Anker products before. 2nd Gen Astro E5 still works great after all this time.
    Anker's PowerCore 16000 is the new battery charger on the market. It is an update to Anker's 2nd Gen Astro E5 16000 mAh battery charger. In my video, I not only review the Anker PowerCore 16000 but I compare and contrast it against the 2nd Gen Astro E5. I figure folks who are in this market will need help deciding between the two models and figuring out which one will be best for them.
    Anker is the leader in battery chargers, hands down. I have reviewed many other battery chargers and theirs consistently come out on top. They are the ones that I and my family use while the others collect dust. This large power brick can deliver a walloping charge and is essentially the same as plugging your device into the wall charger that it came with. What you give up in portability you gain in performance. Anker also makes small lipstick sized chargers that are much more portable and lightweight but only deliver up to 1A in charging devices (this one can go up to 2A for each port, simultaneously).
    In my video, I wanted to compare this new edition versus the 2nd Gen Astro E5 as I know a bunch of folks are probably looking at that as well and want the real quick low down and skinny on what the differences are. The PowerCore 16000 loses the light, which I don't think many people ever used. The PowerCore 16000 can charge up to 4A across the two ports and the 2nd Gen Astro E5 can only supply up to 3A across both ports. Both have PowerIQ technology which automatically senses the device connected and optimizes charging speed. The PowerCore 16000 comes in a nice, matte black finish whereas the 2nd Gen Astro E5 is glossy and will show some fingerprints. The PowerCore 16000 has a little bit better button intelligence, for example it will automatically turn on when you plug in a USB cord. The last difference between the two is VoltageBoost Technology in the PowerCore 16000. This technology senses the resistance of the cord and will adjust the output voltage of the port to compensate for it. This ensures that you are delivering the absolute fastest charge to your device.
    In my testing, the PowerCore 16000 has been every bit as good as the 2nd Gen Astro E5 and charges devices lightning fast. The are very similar in size, weight and price. My advice would be to pick the finish you want and go from there as performance will be pretty similar. If you can't make up your mind, then go for the PowerCore 16000 as it is newer and slightly more potent as far as charging and features are concerned.
    Truth be told, you can't go wrong with either device. They both have overcurrent, overvoltage, short circuit and all kinds of protection built-in. Do your research but Anker is the leader in external battery chargers and stands behinds their products with an 18 month warranty as well.

    The 2nd gen astro e5 actually gives a maximum of 3 amps per port. I did my research and found this on Amazon's description.

    Jo, what do you mean we got to turn it off, turn it on at 5:08 ? It will charging automatically when it's connected to a device right ?

      V. Kansil 2nd Gen Astro E5 needs to be turned on and turned off. PowerCore 16000 does this automatically. Just plug in a USB cord and it automatically turns on. Pretty sure it turns off automatically as well. Charging is automatic once a device is plugged in.

      Joseph Daly Sorry.....Are you sure the E5 doesn't automatically turns on ? because I've seen in other videos it turn on automatically.

    Will this simultaneously charge itself when plugged in and charge another device at the same time (pass-through charging)? Also, is there a power button on the charger? In other words, Can I turn the charger on and off while it is powering a USB powered fan?

    So I just got the 10400 powercore. How do you know when it's done charging? Will all of the blinking lights turn off, or stay on. Or will the whole unit turn itself off when it's all charged?

    How long does the power core take to charge?

    • @josephdaly5309
      @josephdaly5309  9 лет назад

      TheNinjaCustard It takes a long time, at least overnight. Think of how long it would take you to charge your phone 6 times over. However, once it is charged, it stays charged for a long time.

    What's the difference between the Astro and Astro E?

    • @josephdaly5309
      @josephdaly5309  9 лет назад +1

      Jason Honingford The E indicates is a value oriented product from Anker's web site, probably stands for economy or economical. My guess is less than top-of-the-line batteries and chipset because there really isn't much more to these devices. Let me check with the manufacturer and get back to you.

    • @josephdaly5309
      @josephdaly5309  9 лет назад +1

      ***** I have asked the manufacturer for clarification. I got the "value" part from Anker's product page when you click on products and then external battery packs. The description for the Astro 2nd Gen Series reads, "Full-speed, highly efficient power for phones and tablets." The description for the Astro E series reads, "High capacity power for phones and tablets at a great value."I would post the link but then Google would block it. Interesting on price though because I found the Astro 2nd Gen 9600 mAh for $30 on Amazon and the 2nd Gen Astro E3 10000 mAh on Amazon for $22.

      Joseph Daly Thanks, I have the Gen Astro2 9600mAh already and it is fine, but I would like to know what their best models are before buying more.

      +Jason Honingford From Anker...
      There are several series on our portable chargers as below:
      1. PowerCore - Newly released series with excellent performance cost ratio.
      2. 2nd Gen Astro - Full-speed, highly efficient power for phones and tablets. Check how much you've got left with a simple shake.
      3. Astro E - Full-speed, highly efficient power for phones and tablets.
      4. Astro Mini - Classic lipstick portable charger with different colors.

      Very odd marketing. Most companies have a "flagship" line. This company just has different designs. I guess just go by the specs and hope it performs.

      Any micro USB charger will work, just make sure it is coming from a 2.1A outlet so you can quickly charge the battery pack as it takes awhile.

    • @josephdaly5309
      @josephdaly5309  9 лет назад +1

      JCJOKER97 External battery packs are only about 70% efficient once you factor in all of the losses and there are lots of losses. Please keep this in mind when deciding how much capacity you will need. 16000 x 0.70 = 11,200 mAhIPhone 5S - 1560 mAh11,200 / 1560 = 7.18 timesHope this helps!

      +Joseph Daly Have you ever tested what efficiency rate this 16,000 powercore is ? I remember coming across one review of anker's older model powerbank by JJCEO in Amazon and the efficiency rate is higher than 70.

He has also tested tons of these devices so he really knows what he is talking about. He is stating 30% losses...www.amazon.com/review/R3MANX4EBYUZJA/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B00X5RV14Y

    This isn't working with my S3 but it works with my moms LG. Like wtf? It said it worked with S3

    • @josephdaly5309
      @josephdaly5309  9 лет назад

      mw2akimbomaster It should definitely work with an S3. I am assuming this is a micro USB connection and can't think of any reason why it wouldn't work with an S3. Even if it doesn't optimally charge it, it should still charge it. Very weird, have you tried everything, different cords? I would call Anker, they have an 18 month warranty and good customer support. You might have gotten a bad unit.
