For the controversy around 7:20 I would say that I didn't actually see him pull, instead I saw his hand go up and then sideways, into the FDJ rider's side, in order to make sure that the rider knew he was there are if he kept going they both would likely go down, so it may have helped them both stay in the race.

The FDJ rider has a name: Ramon van Sinkeldam. The defending champion that year. He himself said Mathieu fairly beat him.

But back on topic: Sinkeldam would have pushed MvdP into the barriers if Mathieu hadn't signaled him with his hand. Pure self preservation. No controversy at the time and no controversy now. Such a shame you feel like you need to smudge this 'typical' great MvdP victory.
What makes him unique is his enormous capacity to recover during a race. So even when he has attacked, he's still able to win a sprint a little later.
A one in a generation talent with a kind heart and a good moral compass. Enjoy him while you still can.

No not at all. There are quite a few cyclist better than MvdP even his contemporary Tadej Pogacar is arguable better on the road. He is may be a little less well in one day races but he is by far superior in grand tours. When we look at cycling in a broader sense, so we take in Mountain Biking, Road and cyclocross than yes MvdP is the best cyclist ever. No one comes remotely close to him.

LOOK at VDP in the last seconds - in NO way did he pull or shove ANYONE ! VDP simply guarded his lane to make sure the other rider didn't push him into the barrier. NO foul play whatsoever !
