I'm going to buy one of these right now for my 84-year-old neighbor who struggles with getting the ice out of traditional ice cube trays. She's got pretty bad arthritis in her wrists and hands and can't easily "twist" the ice cube tray to knock the ice cubes out. She's often embarrassed to ask me to knock out her ice cube trays when I go visit her. This one I think would work terrific for her - just simply press on the lid! It's worth a try, and I don't mind spending a few bucks to surprise her with something like this that will help her continue feeling as independent living as possible.

I have a variant of this that I got from Amazon. It was just a bit more luxe, as it came with TWO ice scoops and a small pair of ice tongs, if you're gonna be scrupulously sanitary. It works as advertised, but if you're gonna stack everything together, it will take longer for the ice to freeze, and notably the bottom tray will take longer than the top. I pour the cube water before bed and then after I get up in the morning, I rotate the trays. Everything should be frozen in 18 hours or so, sooner if you lay out the trays in the freezer like you normally would. I don't, 'cause the compactness of the whole affair is a definite plus.
I've found that it's best to let the trays thaw for five minutes before dumping them out in the basket (bucket?). It just loosens things up a bit so you're not getting so much of a workout trying to pop the cubes. Even so, for some reason one tray will give it up easier than the other. Go fig. All in all, though, I've never had a better experience using ice cube trays! 👍
Oh, and to get perfectly clear ice, I think you have to boil the water you're gonna use first, of course letting it cool to room temperature before pouring it in the trays. From someplace I remember hearing that it's the oxygen/air in the water that makes the cubes cloudy, and bringing it to a boil gets it out. Don't quote me on it, though.

I bought a set of three silicon ice cube trays, with individual covers, on Amazon for around the same price. They work great and have regular size cubes. All silicon trays release much easier if you let them sit at room temp for a few minutes first. This is why the second tray empties much easier. One thing I find interesting is that the ice cubes I make with regular tap water here in Montreal are clearer than even the ones you made with distilled water. But we have excellent quality tap water here in Montreal, in fact I would put it up against any bottled water on the market. This ice tray seems to be well worth the money, however, and I wouldn't hesitate to buy it if I needed one.

The bin is handy because I can keep it topped up with ice and use the trays for a new batch; so much so the trays won't stack but its a small price to pay for convenience.
Granted you could do that with any old bowl or bin but its perfectly sized to fit in the door.
Also I can confirm as a negative it does take longer to freeze, but I haven't run out of ice before more was ready. May not be great if you go through a lot of ice a day though

Putting the ice trays in the freezer with the storage container allows for more cold air to hit the bottom tray, which allows all of the cubes to freeze faster. If you put the trays in the freezer without the container, you won't get as much cold air hitting the bottom. It's not really necessary if you don't have any time constraints.

I have this ice tray and it's great, only gripe is if you have ice in the storage already I guess it freezes the closest tray harder and it's much harder to release so you'll have to wiggle it and slam it to release those but the very top tray will release very easily. It's also true that it takes longer to freeze the water but it's fine if you're not in a rush.

The only way to make clear ice is to go big. The impurities in water that become cloudy in ice are always the last to freeze. What you do is fill a cooler with water then stick it in the freezer. it will freeze from top down, and as long as you pull it out before the bottom is frozen you'll get perfectly clear ice.

It's not impurities that cause ice cloudiness, it's air in the water coming out of solution as the water freezes. The cloudiness is tiny air bubbles and pretty much nothing else. The only reason the distilled water cubes were a little clearer is it was bottled and therefore the water wasn't able to absorb air.

What if you want some of the ice in the container while water is in the trays above? Too much hassle.

We used to use distilled water in our pressing irons - I tried tasting it once and it was horrible to drink! Wouldn’t regular bottled water be preferable if people wanted clear cubes? Where I live we actually have very good water and I get clear, clines from my old fashioned ice cube trays. I used to live in Phoenix (for ma y, many years) and our water there was never even close to being clear!

Very interestign presetation. I have heard that hot water makes clear ice cubes. Still an interesting product

All I can say is I do really like mine. The smaller square ice cubes also cool the liquid faster and do not create dams while you are drinking.

Nice to finally see an ice cube maker that isn't completely overpriced trash.
