I'm going to buy one of these right now for my 84-year-old neighbor who struggles with getting the ice out of traditional ice cube trays. She's got pretty bad arthritis in her wrists and hands and can't easily "twist" the ice cube tray to knock the ice cubes out. She's often embarrassed to ask me to knock out her ice cube trays when I go visit her. This one I think would work terrific for her - just simply press on the lid! It's worth a try, and I don't mind spending a few bucks to surprise her with something like this that will help her continue feeling as independent living as possible.

    • @NiSE_Rafter

@@NiSE_Rafterhow does faster melting mean fast cooling? Less surface area touching the water would actually mean less cooling, not more.

I have a variant of this that I got from Amazon. It was just a bit more luxe, as it came with TWO ice scoops and a small pair of ice tongs, if you're gonna be scrupulously sanitary. It works as advertised, but if you're gonna stack everything together, it will take longer for the ice to freeze, and notably the bottom tray will take longer than the top. I pour the cube water before bed and then after I get up in the morning, I rotate the trays. Everything should be frozen in 18 hours or so, sooner if you lay out the trays in the freezer like you normally would. I don't, 'cause the compactness of the whole affair is a definite plus.
I've found that it's best to let the trays thaw for five minutes before dumping them out in the basket (bucket?). It just loosens things up a bit so you're not getting so much of a workout trying to pop the cubes. Even so, for some reason one tray will give it up easier than the other. Go fig. All in all, though, I've never had a better experience using ice cube trays! 👍
Oh, and to get perfectly clear ice, I think you have to boil the water you're gonna use first, of course letting it cool to room temperature before pouring it in the trays. From someplace I remember hearing that it's the oxygen/air in the water that makes the cubes cloudy, and bringing it to a boil gets it out. Don't quote me on it, though.

  • @barcham
    @barcham 10 месяцев назад +6

I bought a set of three silicon ice cube trays, with individual covers, on Amazon for around the same price. They work great and have regular size cubes. All silicon trays release much easier if you let them sit at room temp for a few minutes first. This is why the second tray empties much easier. One thing I find interesting is that the ice cubes I make with regular tap water here in Montreal are clearer than even the ones you made with distilled water. But we have excellent quality tap water here in Montreal, in fact I would put it up against any bottled water on the market. This ice tray seems to be well worth the money, however, and I wouldn't hesitate to buy it if I needed one.

I have one of these and have been quite happy with it! Rather than waiting I just run the bottom of the trays under a little cold water to loosen the cubes and it makes them pop out effortlessly
The bin is handy because I can keep it topped up with ice and use the trays for a new batch; so much so the trays won't stack but its a small price to pay for convenience.
Granted you could do that with any old bowl or bin but its perfectly sized to fit in the door.
Also I can confirm as a negative it does take longer to freeze, but I haven't run out of ice before more was ready. May not be great if you go through a lot of ice a day though

I think the half-moon ice cubes my freezer makes has lead to killing my blender. I still allow it to sit in my counter, for some reason, because it does have a little blending power but unless I'm going to use it to help with thickening soups (pour a little of the soup in a blender, then add it back to the pot), I think I need to say goodbye to it. I'll make sure to pay more for a better blender that will last longer.

Putting the ice trays in the freezer with the storage container allows for more cold air to hit the bottom tray, which allows all of the cubes to freeze faster. If you put the trays in the freezer without the container, you won't get as much cold air hitting the bottom. It's not really necessary if you don't have any time constraints.

The reviewer found that the double-decker ice cube tray generally performs as advertised, meeting expectations for its intended purpose of making ice cubes efficiently. Despite some minor flaws reported by users, such as difficulty in releasing ice cubes and longer freezing times compared to regular trays, the tray's features largely deliver on their promises.
One of the notable features highlighted in the review is the easy-release mechanism, which is designed to allow users to extract ice cubes effortlessly with a simple press. Although some users experienced difficulties in this regard, the reviewer found the release system to work adequately overall.
Additionally, the tray offers benefits such as a compact design, odor prevention, and BPA-free material, which contribute to its appeal. However, it's acknowledged that there were some reported drawbacks, including the smaller size of the ice cubes and issues with freezing consistency.
Despite these limitations, the reviewer concludes that the double-decker ice cube tray provides a satisfactory ice-making experience. It produces a reasonable amount of ice, is relatively easy to use, and generally lives up to the expectations set by its advertising. Therefore, the verdict leans towards a positive assessment of the tray's performance and effectiveness in fulfilling its intended purpose.

Here's a problem scenario I could envision happening: You are running low on ice, so you refill the trays with water and place the whole thing back in the freezer. A few minutes later, your son/daughter/spouse/roommate goes to the freezer to get some ice. They have to move the trays full of water off of the storage to get to the cubes and spill the water all over the freezer and into the storage bin. Maybe not a huge issue, but putting a drawer in the lower compartment might solve this problem… maybe?

Small cubes are freat for ubsulated bottles but I despise them for drinking glasses. Having said that, this works surprisingly well for an ice gadget.

My take-away from this review is that it seems to be crucial to say "HI YAA" when releasing the ice 🤷🏼‍♀️😂
Seriously though, I kinda like this one but not crazy about the price. I think the reason that the second tray releases better is simply because it's out of the freezer for a minute longer than the first one. I could be way off, it just seems like it could be the reason.
    Thanks! 💜💜💜

Little bit of broth with a little bit of water mixed up pour it in there and your four-legged kid will thank you for it. It's their version of a popsicle.

I do like you can have two batches of ice in the box and have two already frozen. So you can swap when you used the box up.

Nice, but hope they have a bigger size cube option, or maybe the long strip where you can easily insert in a bottle.

Other, older, ice-gadget reviews of yours were recommended to me today and I (re)watched them. I ask again: Why is the ice cube tray a device we're trying to re-invent?

This feels like an episode of Afro Samurai, where the dollar store ice tray has the number 1 headband for a very long time, and now, this double decker ice tray has caught up to claim the number 2 headband.

Use something similar but with a different way of getting the cubes out of the tray. Only issue with mine is that after about a month or 2 one of the ridges that holds the tray while emptying it broke off, so now I just basically use the trays like any regular one and use the container to store them but just dump them out like you would with any other icecube tray.

Whoa I just bought this a few weeks ago at Winners! Not the same packaging and I think different brand but it's exactly the same components. My dollar store tray needed an upgrade and they were just putting these on the shelves.

I have this triple layer ull need to have some kind of separation between the rest or it won’t freeze, for the ice to dislodge place the ice tray into the catcher you can the add normal tap water on top it will loosen the ice n u can push without trouble.

Ya want clearer cubes boil the water. Boiling releases the oxygen air bubbles that make the cubes cloudy. You also have to flash freeze them for 100% clear which most home deep feezers will not do.
