    I'll give you all a liitle incite when it comes to cam gears. The reason aliminum is used on the cam is two fold. 1 is obvious, dissimilar metal. 2 is the big one. In the valve train there is a ton of harmonic vibration, in the crank there is also harmonic vibration. The aluminum helps too dissipate the harmonic vibration between the two and calm down the valve train. Like VW, magnum gears used to make a steel on aluminum gear set, it was awesome! The only downside was wear in a high load valve train, all they had to do was hard anodize the aliminum gear and it would have been the perfect straight cut gear set.
    Still enjoy watching your videos, although I've built hundreds of these engines it's still fun to see what others are doing, and what challenges they deal with along the way. Keep it up and thank you.

    It looked like the utensils had hammer marks were they in bulk like mass produced or did you just find them by them self in a box? I cant wait to hear that monster when darrin gets it done.

    Have you had to replace the oil galley plugs? Where do you get the plugs for the Autoline aluminum case. The small plugs on the flywheel side. We need a video on these plugs

    • @TheEZGZ
      @TheEZGZ  2 года назад

      The plugs came with my aluminum race case. The folks that sell those blocks stock them. The are just american thread pipe plugs. you use an alllen hex wrench to screw them in with a little sealer on the threads. No magic of any kind required and if you get a leak it's easy to access without disassembling the engine

    Great videos... I learn a lot form watching. Building my first VW motor for adune buggy project.I'm curious to know why you chose a lower compression ratio for your 2 liter dune buggy motor?and...do you use a stretch gauge on stock connecting rod bolts or otherwise?

    • @TheEZGZ
      @TheEZGZ  8 лет назад +1

      +roger ballard The Gene Berg Blue books go into great detail about compression ratio recommendations. The 80 + air cooled VW's had 6.6 CR and ran great. You can run more timing and some times more HP. In the future if you want to add a turbo you are ready to go. Hope you have a good build on your engine.

    I built an aluminum case once and was very happy with it but it wasn't a big monster engine although it would give the Honda's a hard time. I like that flatware ...might make a good project.Use at the next BBQ.. Yoga , I would like to understand all the benefits, interesting. Take care EZ

    The only aluminum case I bought was a total mess. There was casting flash inside and out with pockets of sand and other debris. I had taken it to the shop twice to boil it out and each time was still coming up with sand in the galleys and most likely in other important oil passages. I finally gave up on it after getting no response from several letters to the manufacturer. I sold the case with documentation and receipts for what I purchased it for to a brave soul that was willing to give it a try. I used my funds to purchase two good never align bored cases, and AS21 and an AS41 and built two good engines out of them. That's my story, I'm sticking with it

      +alphahr Generally you get what you pay for. CB performance cases are top dollar but top quality with my personal experience. Thanks for sharing. Wish we could still buy new AS21 cases.

    Hey EZGZ, I am building my first motor and have done the GB cam gear mod along with the full HVX mod. Fingers crossed it works good, I don’t know how to share the images of it on here with you.

      Hi! How your engine goes with the HVX mod? I did it to mine and goes really cool, even I'll increase CR as soon as I can!

    Great video. I wonder if CB Performance has an opinion on this. They have a video on their website of some of the machine work on the case, but unfortunately there is no commentary.

      +malkucken Makes one wonder if it is just a machining short cut or an oversight. Casting molds are very tricky. Now I have something else to worry about. LOL

    I just bought 1974 Super Beetle and within 2 weeks it has lost it's ability to shift. Within the the short time I was able to drive it; it would grind into third and try to pop out of third while driving. Upon investigation the coupler appears to be good; but the shift bushing under the gear shift has totally worn away. Would that cause it not to shift?

    i have seen old engine have 1/2 inch of sludge in the bottom. that little slot gets clogged up. at that point the mains are bleeding much more. so they drilled the cam gear area drain. because it can hold over a 1/2 quart of oil in there instead of at the sump.darrin will never let his new motor sludge up plus he is using a add on sump he shouldnt have any trouble.

      You are very kind. The loveland hot rodders got together at Dairy Delight in HWY 34 west of wilson last night. I stopped by but didn't stay long. Next Friday it's at Freddys on 287 next to the north wall mart. Usually a good turn out around dinner time
