Yeah! It's one thing for people who can't draw to help them gain muscle memory or study how clothing works on bodies. But it's a different ball game when self proclaimed professionals do that! What's the point? You're paying for their style. If they're giving me base art, I might as well do it myself.
I feel it's ok if it's ych, or the artist explicitly tells the commissioner is doing it on a base, as long as the base belongs to the artist. But I would be pretty annoyed if I paid an artist money just for them to use a base without my permission.
ikr. Using bases is okay as long as you 1 - Give credit 2 - Do not use them to make money 3 - GIVE CREDIT 4 - dOn'T sAy iT's cOmpLeTeLy yOUrS, GIVE CREDIT.
So glad to see a person, who does not bash young kids /or people, who are just starting out/ with tracing/base using, I did that myself, a lot, hell, I sometimes use bases still, for ref sheets and such, because damn, they are pretty fun to do edit XP
When I started drawing as a kid I also used bases and copied art I liked. I felt very guilty when I heard people bashing this practice. And it's not ok, because I was not a professional artist, I was just having fun and exploring. We shouldn't shame young children.
I never used bases but I still think they’re a great tool for beginners. I started out with no knowledge of anatomy and my art was all over the place until I tried emulating manga like Fairy Tail
mmmm..... for anathomy is way better idea to learn from real images and anylise them with simple shapes. the reason is that if you learn from a stylised drawing you are learning from someone interpretation of reality and you will be stuck with that interpretation or style, but if you learn from reality you will know how it works any style and your own style will have a good base. i know that learn from realistic images it can be less exciting, but in the end it is the best way to improve your skill
If you're using them for learning anatomy they're not. Most of the bases use stylised anatomy. And you need to understand the structure of the body to be able to draw it well and in different positions. You're not getting that if you're tracing or drawing over bases. If you can look at a skeleton and simplify it into shapes first then practice the proportions that would be better then you can later stylize it once you're comfortable.
@MARVELOUS FANG I like anatomy models, but not the wooden ones. They don't move like people do and the poses you can make with them are very limited. There are lots of great plastic alternatives that look more like real people and that can do very dynamic poses.
@MARVELOUS FANG There are a lot of fake ones that break easily but the 'real' ones (also more expensive unfortunately haha) don't break as quickly. Something might fall off once if you're making a weird pose, but it doesn't happen super often and you can put everything back like it's supposed to
I use mlp bases all the time when I was 9 or 10 (mostly the human versions ngl) and now my style looks more like mlp than anime even tho I like anime a lot more now.
I absolutely love how you're doing shading & sketch-work these days! I used to follow you on deviantart really actively, and it's good to see you getting more active online art-wise again! As for bases, I agree. I never really used them actively outside of once or twice for those dA "Base collabs", but I think that if people like them that they're a perfectly fine way to get a start in art. In the long run it doesn't hurt anybody, and in my opinion it's kind of a great way to kick of a child's creativity too.
@@Yukibunns Of course!! You're super talented and you've always been really friendly/easy to talk with! We actually added one another on Skype there for a bit before it died but we didn't talk much lmao
I started out tracing and not crediting the bases on amino. No one braught it up to me which actually ended up leading me to admit myself since others didnt constantly harrass me over it. They told me afterwards that it was kind of obvious and they just didnt wanna bother me since i was a beginner. Now i draw my own art and ive improved alot. Bases can help!
I've been on amino since 2015, get out of the app while you can, that app only brings toxicity, it made me depressed, hatred, and filled me up with anxiety, it matured me so fast, before I was even a tween I came mature. amino can be fun, but I wouldn't stay and I finally left after losing a group of friends, I had enough of losing them, most of the people on there don't care enough to get to know you, it isn't always easy to spot them, but if you're new, be safe.
@@michselbstangepisst8533 i cant uninstall amino- its the only form oc contact i have with my boyfriend and its where i met my internet brother and sister. I have no other way of contacting them
@@WinglessCanary I'm sorry about that. I've had my fair share of horrible experiences, but the friends I have met there keep me there. If you are comfortable with it, you could maybe get snapchap and talk there? I feel like it would be best to have more than one place to communicate with someone, if something goes wrong.
The only thing I don't like about base makers and users is when they don't credit the original artists. But other than that, it's a good thing that it's becoming easier to kids to get into art. Hopefully, they'll actually enjoy it and go further with it... Unlike me, who never put my whole heart into it, since I didn't actually enjoy doing it, and only kept forcing myself to do it because it was the only thing people knew me for. If only I had realized that sooner. Oh damn, sorry for the rambling. Also, that's a very good drawing. No wonder it took 8 hours to make.
Exactly. The issue is that a majority of young artists that use bases DON'T give credit. If they gave credit, then so many people wouldn't be bashing it in the first place.
This is a great video, I love that you didn't bash people that practice with bases! I love Love Live Sunshine and this is one of the best fanart drawings I've seen of Chika! Keep it up!
I don’t watch much anime (I only really watch Tokyo Mew Mew and Diabolik Lovers) so I thought you meant Chika Mirahaka from Sakura School Simulator and got confused
Eek! I completely agree! Back when I was a wee little lass I used to draw on Anime, MLP and Powerpuff Girls bases on my cousins' laptop and eventually tried to draw my own. Of course, me being a wee little lass I couldn't do much and the lines came out wonky because mouses are hard to use, but I eventually got a grip of it. I downloaded an MS Paint-ish program on my Mac as well, where I just tried to draw on my own without bases, though I occasionally used them. Eventually though, I dropped digital art for a while and stuck to trad art. It took me getting a phone and a new laptop that wasn't mac to get back into digital art lol, and now I got a tablet for Christmas! Though I still need to practice anatomy and all that jazz, but I'll get there. Tbh I still use bases occasionally, but I moreso use them as mannequins. I think some bases r rlly good for mannequins so that I can make clothes for my ocs, which i then draw on Ibis or Medibang lol. It's fun! But yeah, I find it kinda upsetting when ppl talk about young artists in horrible manners for using bases. It can discourage them and I honestly hate that bc they could become great artists in the future! People are mean sometimes. Bases are great for learning basic stuff before moving to anatomy... Another way I used to use bases was practicing anatomy lol. It was short lived, but basic skeletons were fun to draw! idk i kind of rambled on. great vid, pretty art, i am love.
"tracing isn't a way to learn" *my younger self looks away* "bases aren't a way to learn" *my younger self has entirely left the chat* I agree with you entirely in this video and was there doing the same thing when I was younger XD I wouldn't be here today if not for bases and learning via tracing, not to say i'm great, but that my younger self definitely would look up to my art. :P
It isn't. Using bases and tracing is just cheating. Why wouldn't you want to make your OWN art that you can be proud of and worked hard on instead of copying off of others? Make no sense.
@@thestrivinghero9536 Cheating? No. If you aren't claiming the art as your own it isn't, especiallyif you're just learning. It helped me learn things that help me in my art today. It definitely isn't for everyone but for some young and new artists, tracing and bases ARE how they learn how to draw. I know several people who aren't artists(people who do not draw often, everyone can make art, but not everyone is an artist) who use bases as a way to visually make a character for a story or role play and more. So no...this is not cheating, but it isn't for everyone and not everyone learns this way. It is one of many ways that people learn.
@@alexlion8458 Lol whatever you tell yourself to help you sleep at night. I still consider it the lowest way to make art, and an incredibly lazy one at that. I'd be so pissed if someone traced my art and then tried to say they were just "learning" or some shit. It's tracing. That's all it is. It's not even your art. You have no right without the artists permission, which fyi, most of the bases are from shows or artists that never gave people permission to make in the first place.
@@thestrivinghero9536 oh get over yourself, what's a show going to do about some beginner artist doing a screenshot redraw? Nothing, they dont care. And as long as one credits the artist or even better, gets permission, its totally fine. It's not lazy. Plus it's just a base, which has the explicit purpose of being used. Tracing isnt bad. Trying to pass it off as your own is. And tracing is learning, whether you like it or not. Not everyone is trying to become a proffesional artist, let kids have fun in any way they want, whether it's by using bases or drawing free hand
I agree I feel that I would probably still be drawing without shading today if it weren’t for bases 😅. I used to just colour then I was done but when I had to use bases it pushed me to do more. I can’t just stop there I haven’t done enough to the drawing yet.
Hm. I think I used bases maybe once or twice? I never really got good at using them the way they're intended; rather, I turned to using them as pose references instead. It just felt more natural for me to be the one to draw the whole thing out, and it's been helping with my anatomy along the way. Also, when you said Naruto edits, I felt my inner 12yr old scream a little. I did my share of them (mostly to turn Sasuke blonde for some reason), and doing those edits are what helped me learn the ins and outs of MS paint. I.e, If I had my edit with no BG in one tab, I could copy it and paste it into a new tab with the original image and BOOM- edit with full BG. Of course that only works if the transparency behaves, which is 50/50 because Microsoft. And YES, the eraser thing for the red lines. Its red primary, white secondary, and right click to erase (For Win. 7 version).
Yea I get you! I use bases a lot as references bc I get real uncreative with poses for some reason. It does help me with anatomy and I really like using them as references.
I used to export (read: screenshot and copy/paste) Warrior Cats “coloring bases” on Scratch to a decent drawing program my dad got in a bundle with his photo editing program and trace the lines in a better color and color it then upload it back to Scratch. We were all inexperienced at some point, I definitely agree with not bullying children for being children.
I started art through tracing Chris Hart’s “how to draw anime” book and telling other kids in school it was mine. I’ve now developed a lot in my art and anatomy. Sure, I still hate myself for taking credit back then, but I still think tracing really helped me get into art.
Hi! I'm 13 and I use bases all the time because I just got into digital, and I use a mouse. (Yes, I am indeed a magical mouse artist.) I always credit my bases, and I find it extremely upsetting when people say that my drawings aren't art because I use bases. Bases to me are almost like a sketch, so I can change and transform them into what I want it to be.
Im not gonna lie, i was kinda off put with your channel for a tiny bit but kinda hovered over your channel. You have really good art and stay to the point of the point you want to make!! You come off really sweet and honest and it give me some warm feelings. Def subscribing
Thank you!! I'm glad to hear you feel that way after watching my stuff! 😭 I probably have to change around some stuff if I'm leaving a bad impression though haha, I apologise! I definitely don't mean ill will!
Reference sheets is really good for drawing when you don’t know how to draw like humans or animals I use them ALL the time and my art is meh average currently And usually good color palettes may help the the drawing too-
References are great people! People are just haters. Don't show to them. Show to people who actually care about u. Friends, family, grandparents. Don't care what people will tell u on internet. U get from here only things what helps u to improve faster(artworks, tutorials and etc). When I was a kid I was really *proud* of my *traced artwork* . I was literally showing that work to *everybody* ! And I got very positive push to go further. *IT WAS A TRACE!!!* Now of course I do original art mostly. But you know... sometimes even that original work lacks of something. I should use references more TT
my opinion on bases: I think you can use them and young artists should for these reasons: bases can help you with anatomy. You can train your anatomy and get used to it by tracing over the base. another thing. If you're using a base for practicing your shading, or colouring, or experimenting with new art. It can be useful because you don't have to go through all the trouble of making the figure even if the figure is not the main focus. So I think that using bases is OK, the problem for me comes in when someone does not give credit
LMAO ok so ted talk time whenever i was younger and was a mega undertale fan and i saw this one sans drawing and im like omfg that looks so cool do i just kept drawing from the reference and bro i learned so much from just one drawing :triumph:
this got recommended to me and i was like "oh no" but i gave it a watch anyway and i'm really glad i did. i initially started digital art with a tablet and actually switched to bases for a period of about 3 years. my pixel art got pretty fucking good (i got a daily deviation using a bunnystick base back when the digital doll category had a moderator and lost my marbles lmao) and my anatomy actually improved drastically because i would typically always redo the base. i had started out pretty much exclusively using and making traced anime bases but later switched to making my own or using original bases. i do feel bad about the traced bases that i made and some of them still live on even though i deleted my first base account (rip royaled-pixels lmao) but i don't regret having used them. i learned a lot about art through them and i don't think they held me back at all because i never used them as a crutch. they also helped me unlearn the idea that using references makes you a "fake artist" and that was definitely an important thing to learn. thank you for making this video and for being so positive about a topic that usually gets a lot of hate. also, your art is lovely!!
your story reminds me so much of my childhood and my gateway to digital art. I started out with dolls and making dolls too, mostly because of the dollmaker community, I loved designing clothes and outfits to my OCs back then, so I just can't help myself but be happy when very young people use bases, because it means they have some sort of outlet for their creativity. transitioning into "real art" comes naturally I think ^^
The only reason for why I still use drawing bases is for the posing ideas in order to get a feel of how it looks like drawn down instead of taking a picture of myself to figure out what looks good or not.
You just healed a part of me. For years I've felt ashamed of how I used bases and tracing when I was a kid/early teenager. I was one of those kids posting the really chunky hair and clothes with no shading or detail. After I quit, I never went on to drawing on my own or anything. I stopped altogether out of shame because I wasn't a "real" artist. It's an understatement to say I didn't have a good home life either, and with my family treating anything expressive I did as cringy/bad already, when the internet made fun of my attempts too, I thought "well shit, I guess I suck and should just stop then." But your kindness and wisdom have really inspired me to try again, 10 freaking years later. Thank you.
Remember "Everyone can make art, But everyone is not artist" Understanding all fundamental of art , how to use them and pushing your creativity through it is what make you an artist! Being artist is a journey which cant be describe in just one line!
As somebody who’s made fairly popular bases in the past, the begin was perfectly nice. Seeing my work be used by so many people made me really happy but I didn’t expect so many people to ignore the rules and take advantage of it. Finding uncredited uses of my bases became daily, and spread to places outside of the original site where it would be harder to recognize it as mine. Eventually it ruined my name in my eyes, so it threw me off the platform permanently. After your name is tried to something, it feels like I can never just go back to doing what I love because of it.
I'm not an artist, just stumbled here. But as a layman, if the picture you just drew during this video, had started off as a hairless naked outline you found on the internet, I wouldn't think you any less an artist. I'm not sure consumers care about process.
Bases are a very helpful art tool for you to learn from and in my opinion that tracing as long as you’re not making any money from it is ok bc when i was little i used to trace a lot of my dad’s artwork bc i wanted to be good at drawing like him Ps proud to be the 600th comment :3
As a former tracer and base artist, I used to be really young when I started drawing anime art on my small iPod before and basically trace a lot of illustrations from the internet without any crediting other artists and share around with my family. Even though years later, I got really bored on tracing/base drawing because I ran out ideas of creating my own original characters. So I eventually gave up and realized it’s art thieving. I’m glad that I watched your videos and comnenting about topics that I like. I’m officially suscribed to your channel!
"being a December baby... those holidays are a long time away.." finally, someone understands the pain of being born in December. if people don't forget your birthday, you tend to get Christmas presents for your birthday. some friends are nice though and give you normal things. don't do that, it's annoying because our birthdays aren't related to Christmas in the same way everyone else's aren't. sorry, rant over XD
My one friend (lets call her M) has her birthday on December 21st. I made her a whole picture of her favorite Love Live girl(Rina) and she said she forgot her birthday- I, however, am born in June so I dont have that problem
This made me feel more at ease because I use to use bases and felt so bad doing so but know how good you are at it and you making an absolute masterpiece. Although I'm not using bases anymore it was a good way to start out. P.s. I live for the ruffles of the drawing.
to this day i still use bases. i can draw a whole thing all on my own just fine but I'm a huge OC creator. I get new ideas for them all the time and some days, i just don't want to draw a whole lineart so I'll find a base close to what I have in mind and i'll edit it if needed. i usually only use bases when I just feel like testing out a colour palette or designs and once i decide on what i like i'll move on to original art of that character. i dont want to spend 2 hours fighting myself on lineart and be burnt out by the time i finally decide on what i like. using a base is convenient and fast and i appreciate them a lot. i didn't have any art programs or a drawing tablet until i was 17 and finally had a job. it was one of the first things i ever bought with my money and it helps a lot. bases also help with anatomy too. i usually just use bases as a reference for a pose since i find too much detail on a reference distracting. bases really are the foundation for the digital art community. i'm sure at least 85% of the community has used a base before at least ONCE. and theres no problem with still using bases to this day as long as you follow whatever rules the OP has set for them and you give credit where it's due.
There was a time I used bases, and like you, I wouldn't be where I am today if it where not for them. Later I started getting away from that and started doing this thing that I like to call "mind tracing". I have a reference picture and just draw what I see on a separate paper but not actually tracing the normal way. This helped me look into poses, proportions, styles, and I even picked up on how to draw the thing in the process! One example would be looking at pokemon cards, and drawing the exact picture on a piece of paper. Then I started doing the same thing with pictures, but instead just using them as reference. All of this lead me to improve vastly different art styles, and then slowly finding what I liked best. It all comes down to not giving up. Yes it's frustrating at times to come up with something original. That's ok! If it gets hard, draw some fan art, or take a breather with a loose pencil or pen. You do you. If you draw for you, you will see change. Look at really old art, and draw it like it's not yours. Make it as an inspiration. Then when your done, you will see for yourself that it's possible. To everyone reading this, please keep doing art.
I started art by doing pose breakdowns on Disney screenshots and official images and then building on from there (thank Ethan Becker for teaching that technique on his "Fixing Avatar Art" vid). I still do traditional art (and it's just been 6 months since I started) and I've seen a lot of improvement with poses, esp feet. I can't bring myself to trace anything (even bases) but the pose breakdown + grid thing and then replicating that is a good way to develop muscle memory (I'm 19, so I don't think 11 is too "old" to start drawing hehe.)
this hit home so hard, i know this is like super late but all the junk you went through is extremely similar to my own art past, and this really made me feel better about my own past about bases, i've come a long way and its nice to know that someone else has come so far from bases.
Sorta off topic but like- I tend to find speed paints a bit boring to watch, but I can actually sit my booty down and watch your 's without skipping anything! I find your speed paints and your voice so calming! And I just like actually get hooked onto watching and listening without getting distracted! So yea thought id say that lmao 😂😂
I feel bases are a very important part of learning art in many ways, personally I used them to learn anatomy (kinda) and they helped me with just using them as reference while I drew on paper.
I recently found a flash drive that contained all my old mspaint drawings of my warriors and mlp ocs, and oh boy it was so nostalgic. Bases got me so far in art and I never would have gotten into digital art if I hadn’t used them
I appreciate how chill you are in your videos. I blindly tapped on a video that was recommended next and was OVERWHELMED with shouting. It made me miss your soft voice so I had to click back lmfaO
i use bases and stuff for designing characters (i write story’s) and i don’t post them anywhere or anything, but it just makes it easier when describing characters because i can physically see what i’m describing
This made me feel a lot better, I use bases at times when I'm stuck or want something a little bit easier. I take the base and draw over it on my phone because I don't have an art tablet or computer and it works quite well. I'm currently saving up for an art tablet because I'm scared to ask my parents 😅 but this made me feel so much better, thank you for this 🥰💖
Thank you for making this. I first was just watching because of something I told my younger sister. My sister is a hobby artist and is pretty young. She doesn't really believe that her art is good so she goes and traces other drawings and then changes certain aspects, generally the hair or outfit. I myself haven't been big on the tracing thing for many years now so finally I had told her to go and use a base instead. But after seeing this video. I got an appreciation for my sister at least trying art still and despite how much she seems to hate her art, still doing it in the form of tracing certain aspects of others art (luckily 1. she doesn't post it anywhere and 2. it's from art books anyways.) My only thing now is that she expresses how much she wants to be like me and use my so called "anime style." Even if using others art as a way of getting there. I really want her to express her own art. So even now somewhat excepting this tracing she does, how can I kinda coach her from here?
This brings back a lot of memories... Man I feel old. I remembered when I first learned about Bases, I don't think DA was even a thing yet. Those were vary much not Anime. Not gonna lie, at first I was real bad, but so were my friends who showed them but it would bug me to the point that eventually kept noticing what it was that I was lacking. It's a lot easier in pixel art to notice shading or a lack there of. Not sure if I would have picked up on shading so quickly if not for bases.
I didn’t start out tracing (at least not that much lol) or using bases or anything, but even I don’t crap on people that did/are starting that way. In fact, bases are a perfect place for people to realize they have an interest in art, and claiming they’re “bad” will just discourage people from starting.
I actually heavily used bases when I was around 10-14 and I think it's a really good resource for people learning + at least at the time it provided another avenue for people to get into art. I predominately used them to make graphics for characters I role played as on a Harry Potter forum. Before that I hadn't had any real interest in getting into digital art but I really, really got into it and eventually transitioned into making non-base digital art.
so pretttttty! the end result is wonderful also i big agree about what youve said as someone that also started out with copying and using bases as a kid i soon learned and realized that i needed to do things on my own ^^;; theres nothing wrong with bases as long as you dont claim you made them (when you didnt) and you dont completely rely on them for everything!
Ew, please don't listen to them. That's not right at all. Please don't trace other artists hard work!! I know I'd be very upset if someone did that to mine. :(
@@thestrivinghero9536 there's a difference between tracing for practice while giving credit to the original artist and tracing posting it and claiming it's yours the latter is clearly wrong but there's nothing wrong with tracing for practice as long as you're not claiming the art is yours and posting it.
After studying realistic figure drawing for a while, I decided that it's actually incredibly practical to use anime bases for pose references when you're doing stylized drawings. I don't have tools for digital art or tracing, but if I did I'd definitely use bases to study figure drawing/anatomy more. Those kids drawing over bases or tracing are getting familiar with a lot of basic skills that'll help them down the line.
bases helped me learn how to draw hair and cloth because i didnt have to worry about anatomy. bases are relaxing too, all my art are what ive drawn myself but bases are always a blast either way. i dont think its a but deal if people dont claim it as their own thing.
I agree with you all the way, I think it's wrong to shame and harass kids for using bases, I would have not gotten to where I am with my art if it wasn't for bases. As long as they credit the base, leave them be and let them have fun and improve on their own time. Also I found it wholesome hearing you reminisce on how you used to use bases. Great video❤
in my opinion its easy for me to draw clothes on my own drawings bc its just that i know how it works better but i do try bases from time to time and it nice to practice clothes and other things like accessories soo... it's just practice
I remember tracing bases on ms paint. I learned a lot from it and it really made digital art accessible since i was on a touchpad or mouse which makes it near impossible to sketch it yourself. I only stopped when my mother got me a tablet years later
I only use bases/references for pose ideas and treat them like you said: as a sketch. When I was much younger, I used to trace images of video game characters I liked like crazy until I finally found my own way of drawing. Eventually, I got into digital art by using IbisPaintX on my phone, and I've gotten a lot better than when I started using it over a year ago. Much like you said about yourself, I firmly believe I owe much of my improvement to the bases/references I use.
I myself make free bases for others to use and put just as much effort into them as I do my other art. I put effort in the line art and the light shading that I ad to it. Thank you for having a more positive view on it all. I post mine on many different sits so more people can access them.
I'm 16, I use bases every once in a while. I always credit the artist like 3 times, say that I didn't make the lines, showing and linking back to the original base. I also edit the base a lot, changing the proportions, hands, arms, legs, expression. I also don't use bases that are traced, only the ones people made themselves. I also create bases for people to use! (Not traced from other artists' work, I make them fully myself)
I used to use a lot of bases before I new how anatomy works. I haven’t used a base in years but I do you based as references for poses sometimes. Hardly ever but sometimes
The bases I use are the ones I make myself on an app (cause I’m not used to using a program on pc ;-;) I try to grasp the anatomy on my own with a few real life photos or artworks and use those bases i make myself as a reference cause it’s one of the ways i feel comfortable which is by recreating the poses myself to understand them and then recreate them again on paper by hand to know how either female or male anatomy works by drawing it myself. It sounds like a lot of work (and maybe confusing) but it’s my way of learning anatomy without tracing. I prefer learning by hand than tracing over it but that’s just me, u can trace to also learn but I just don’t like how certain ppl post it online and claim it’s their own original work without any credit to the og base😅
Wen you brought up DeviantArt and scanning, it reminded me of 12 year old me drawing fusion pokemon. I used to scan them onto my computer, and use GIMP to lineart and color. I miss those days!
I like this, because as a starting artist, I usually try to draw my stuff all myself but I struggle with drawing body types, and i dont have much access to very highly rated art supplies, tablets or stuff like that. I tho do try to draw all my stuff myself but I do use body bases or poses. I don't ever trace hair or eyes or clothes, I draw those all myself, but I like this because she doesn't bash kids like me who use bases, like a lot of others youtubers do. And of course- I do draw my own stuff at times, and sometimes I like it, sometimes I don't. But it works for me, and I shall stay like this until I feel comfortable with my style. And as a 6th grader now- Nah you aren't alone, I just started or got into digital art, and my best friend is my inspiration, cause his art is amazing.
Bases are good for beginner artist mhm. Good for learning proportions and that transition to pure references can go pretty well done. But other than that it often can make artwork very stiff especially for (commissions which should credit) like comic styles(manhuad)
As someone who started art by using bases thank you for the validation. I started with mlp bases I found on Google images and over several years of using bases I gradually expanded, making additions that go slightly against the base e.g. making fluffy chests and hooves for the ponies and now I'm in an animation course. While I'm still not confident at art I'm definitely way better at it because of my experience using bases and every now and then I still go back to them to test out a hair/clothing style I've never done before to get more confident and to see how well I can do it. I'm currently working on making a main artstyle for myself as I've been using more circle based character design and want to branch out a bit more into other kinds of shape based characters. (I'd also use references for backgrounds and always made custom backgrounds for the ponies :])
I think drawing bases help you a lot because it helps you understand human form under the clothing. That’s really important and I think thats why it helped you to improve so quickly
Though while I have been drawing/doodling for 4 years,I feel like I have always wanted to touch bases. I didn’t use the internet when I was younger,so I was unaware of them. And though I’ve been on this art journey for 4 years,I’m still very amateur,so I feel that could slightly help me in my artistry. Idk, I was so obsessed with dressing games at the time, which makes me have a large appreciation for bases.
bases only bother me when people start using it for commission without telling the person who is buying (yes I know someone who do that)
Yeah! It's one thing for people who can't draw to help them gain muscle memory or study how clothing works on bodies. But it's a different ball game when self proclaimed professionals do that! What's the point? You're paying for their style. If they're giving me base art, I might as well do it myself.
I've seen it happen before as well 😅 definitely not cool
I only used a PERSONAL base made by ME for big coms, for example one com that wanted 7 ref sheets
@@crowcove that's ok in my opinion
I feel it's ok if it's ych, or the artist explicitly tells the commissioner is doing it on a base, as long as the base belongs to the artist. But I would be pretty annoyed if I paid an artist money just for them to use a base without my permission.
I don't give a single damn if someone uses a base
I only want to see them give credit-
and not to use them for commissions too
Yep, I think bases are completely fine as long as you give credit.
Yea

So glad to see a person, who does not bash young kids /or people, who are just starting out/ with tracing/base using, I did that myself, a lot, hell, I sometimes use bases still, for ref sheets and such, because damn, they are pretty fun to do edit XP
I also started digital art by using bases. And still occasionaly use them.
When I started drawing I used bases and now I understand it better and I can draw without one :P
@@bloopitsbloob Same, I can draw without them and simply reference the pose I want my character to be in
When I started drawing as a kid I also used bases and copied art I liked.

WEEEEPS
Thank you!! I'm always blown away that anyone would follow me like that at ALL lol

I've been on amino since 2015, get out of the app while you can, that app only brings toxicity, it made me depressed, hatred, and filled me up with anxiety, it matured me so fast, before I was even a tween I came mature. amino can be fun, but I wouldn't stay and I finally left after losing a group of friends, I had enough of losing them, most of the people on there don't care enough to get to know you, it isn't always easy to spot them, but if you're new, be safe.

show your old base drawings. i wanna find mine
She should redraw them
The only thing I don't like about base makers and users is when they don't credit the original artists.
@@thestrivinghero9536 i mean there young artists im guessing that they don't understand it
This is a great video, I love that you didn't bash people that practice with bases!

Alyssa Skits Tokyo mew mew! That was a first anime lmao

I agree with you entirely in this video and was there doing the same thing when I was younger XD I wouldn't be here today if not for bases and learning via tracing, not to say i'm great, but that my younger self definitely would look up to my art. :P
Dude, same. :/

I was literally showing that work to *everybody* ! And I got very positive push to go further. *IT WAS A TRACE!!!* Now of course I do original art mostly. But you know... sometimes even that original work lacks of something. I should use references more TT
this makes me feel really comfortable using bases :D
my opinion on bases:
I think you can use them and young artists should for these reasons: bases can help you with anatomy.

100% agree I started off using bases and such now I'm going to an art collage soon as an illustrator.
I actually thought this was gonna be one of _those_ videos, glad to find out i was wrong :^)
I also find that bases are good for figuring out how an oc would look like or wear, and then drawing them on your own if you want..!
this got recommended to me and i was like "oh no" but i gave it a watch anyway and i'm really glad i did. i initially started digital art with a tablet and actually switched to bases for a period of about 3 years. my pixel art got pretty fucking good (i got a daily deviation using a bunnystick base back when the digital doll category had a moderator and lost my marbles lmao) and my anatomy actually improved drastically because i would typically always redo the base. i had started out pretty much exclusively using and making traced anime bases but later switched to making my own or using original bases.
i do feel bad about the traced bases that i made and some of them still live on even though i deleted my first base account (rip royaled-pixels lmao) but i don't regret having used them. i learned a lot about art through them and i don't think they held me back at all because i never used them as a crutch. they also helped me unlearn the idea that using references makes you a "fake artist" and that was definitely an important thing to learn.
thank you for making this video and for being so positive about a topic that usually gets a lot of hate. also, your art is lovely!!
your story reminds me so much of my childhood and my gateway to digital art.
The only reason for why I still use drawing bases is for the posing ideas in order to get a feel of how it looks like drawn down instead of taking a picture of myself to figure out what looks good or not.
major agree! also i love the way you shade...that skirt and those eyes are just 👌👌👌
Your art is so beautiful! Your line art is smooth and your colors and blending speak life. I’m glad I randomly stumbled upon your channel!
I think any creation is art, therefore, using a base is still 100% art ❤️ keep doing what you love
It's an understatement to say I didn't have a good home life either, and with my family treating anything expressive I did as cringy/bad already, when the internet made fun of my attempts too, I thought "well shit, I guess I suck and should just stop then."
But your kindness and wisdom have really inspired me to try again, 10 freaking years later. Thank you.
Remember "Everyone can make art, But everyone is not artist"
Understanding all fundamental of art , how to use them and pushing your creativity through it is what make you an artist!
I only use bases for concepts for Oc's. Then I draw my own art using the color pallet and design
Bases are a very helpful art tool for you to learn from and in my opinion that tracing as long as you’re not making any money from it is ok bc when i was little i used to trace a lot of my dad’s artwork bc i wanted to be good at drawing like him

"being a December baby... those holidays are a long time away.."
finally, someone understands the pain of being born in December. if people don't forget your birthday, you tend to get Christmas presents for your birthday. some friends are nice though and give you normal things. don't do that, it's annoying because our birthdays aren't related to Christmas in the same way everyone else's aren't. sorry, rant over XD
My one friend (lets call her M) has her birthday on December 21st. I made her a whole picture of her favorite Love Live girl(Rina) and she said she forgot her birthday-
I, however, am born in June so I dont have that problem
This made me feel more at ease because I use to use bases and felt so bad doing so but know how good you are at it and you making an absolute masterpiece. Although I'm not using bases anymore it was a good way to start out.
P.s. I live for the ruffles of the drawing.
to this day i still use bases. i can draw a whole thing all on my own just fine but I'm a huge OC creator. I get new ideas for them all the time and some days, i just don't want to draw a whole lineart so I'll find a base close to what I have in mind and i'll edit it if needed. i usually only use bases when I just feel like testing out a colour palette or designs and once i decide on what i like i'll move on to original art of that character. i dont want to spend 2 hours fighting myself on lineart and be burnt out by the time i finally decide on what i like. using a base is convenient and fast and i appreciate them a lot. i didn't have any art programs or a drawing tablet until i was 17 and finally had a job. it was one of the first things i ever bought with my money and it helps a lot. bases also help with anatomy too. i usually just use bases as a reference for a pose since i find too much detail on a reference distracting. bases really are the foundation for the digital art community. i'm sure at least 85% of the community has used a base before at least ONCE. and theres no problem with still using bases to this day as long as you follow whatever rules the OP has set for them and you give credit where it's due.
those oranges look SO beautiful, love that mikan girl!
I love how supportive you are
Came for the art talk, stayed for the art. Your coloring style is absolutely gorgeous! ❤👌

Before that I hadn't had any real interest in getting into digital art but I really, really got into it and eventually transitioned into making non-base digital art.
so pretttttty! the end result is wonderful
also i big agree about what youve said
as someone that also started out with copying and using bases as a kid i soon learned and realized that i needed to do things on my own ^^;; theres nothing wrong with bases as long as you dont claim you made them (when you didnt) and you dont completely rely on them for everything!
I started with bases as well. Honestly it helped me with clothing folds and hair. It actually shaped how I draw today and my style.
im doing gcse art and we're literally taught that tracing is good and encouraged to do it for some topics and peices
I'm waiting for you to become popular!! I love your work so so much and I really hope you get the attention you deserve!!
😭 you are too sweet
Your shading and color schemes are just perfect 👏👏
Refreshing to see an actually GOOD artist doing commentary!
Great video❤
your art is amazing and your voice is so pleasent to listen to! looking forward for more speedpaints with commentary
in my opinion its easy for me to draw clothes on my own drawings bc its just that i know how it works better but i do try bases from time to time and it nice to practice clothes and other things like accessories soo... it's just practice
I used them for a long time and it really helped me figure out how to draw more! I always credited.
(Not traced from other artists' work, I make them fully myself)
i have a pose app (magic poser) and i do a sketch trace over the pose that i made then use the sketch trace as a reference
Yeee
I remember using bases a lot when I was younger and I thinks it helped me to improve so much. You just have to learn how to let go of them
I used to use a lot of bases before I new how anatomy works.
I used them for practicing hair and clothes :,)
Wen you brought up DeviantArt and scanning, it reminded me of 12 year old me drawing fusion pokemon. I used to scan them onto my computer, and use GIMP to lineart and color. I miss those days!
i expected this to be one of those snotty rants but this is the sweetest thing i ever watched thank you
ur art is gorg btw
(I'd also use references for backgrounds and always made custom backgrounds for the ponies :])
trust me, these days, adopt pages are everywhere on instagram
I honestly don’t even understand that
Oh yeah I remember bases! I saw those and tried one for fun. But, yeah! Wow! I haven't seen those things in a while!
