the fact people made fake screenshots of that one artist saying the n word just to get away with bullying a child is INSANE and should've never happened. having an art style with your eyes a bit high isn't going to kill anyone and that "drama" should've never happened

This is kind of a hot take but when black artist pointed out that nawnii didn't even speak up about the harassment artist were receiving during blacktober people immediately jumped on that to justify their harassment of Croaket_ and avoid saying that they were in the wrong in the first place. Also, Nawnii was a bit hypocritical when it came to that situation because they made of gacha kids before and they should've spoken about what was going on in blacktober and given a better apology and then not immediately delete it because they couldn't handle the critism people were giving them because some of it was honestly valid.

It reminds me of those stupid discussions when someone says "I donate to charities that help the victims of Ukrainian war" and someone responds with "oh so you don't care about the war going on in [insert any other country]?" People can be generous to whoever they want and can care about multiple issues at once but at the end of the day, even if they don't, they have no obligation to donate to every place/charity. No one should explain themselves when they try to be helpful in a particular issue
When it comes to making fun of gacha kids.. from what I have seen, she was not giving any information on who they were and was not bullying them like Pkrussl did, she always stated she wishes them well and that they have a great future ahead of them. I get it, I did cringy shit as a kid too and if someone made fun of it, I wouldn't blame them. Perhaps she was harsher in her older videos, I have no idea, but it still doesn't mean she is irredeemable or a hypocrite. People change, improve, make mistakes. Some listen to their own advice that way everyone is happier
I'm not writing this comment to attack you in any way. I believe to see the best in people and not assume negative things that aren't confirmed about them. Nawnii apologised and told her audience how she tries to improve and it's a very difficult journey to her because of her past traumas. I think she did what she could and even though her apology wasn't "perfect" it doesn't have to be. It has to be good enough, show remorse and the desire to change and she checked all of these boxes

    • @BitchboyOzzie
      @BitchboyOzzie 2 года назад +6

As somebody who's video got viral on TikTok as a semi beginner artist, I kept on getting "oh" and Multiple other comments and a person made an entire argument on how I'm the worse person ever cus I used a art term wrong by accident and was arguing everyone.
I got a bunch of followers and a bunch of people who liked my art though, I guess I did get something out of it but the feeling of dread of opening up a app and then immediately thinking about quiting art is a feeling alright.
Edit: Looking at the replies, let me explain what happened.
I made a video saying "This was literally my rendering process." And it was me showing how simple the process was and this was replying to comment that was made on a speed paint.
A person in my comments said "So we're calling anything rendering now? 💀" And the only reply I did was "Actually, this was helpful." Because I got educated on the term rendering and also wanted them to calm down and know that I got their point.
Anyways, everyone was arguing them and they were not backing down. I think I did one petty reply but that was when it was in the middle of it besides that, I literally did nothing but used a term wrong.
#2 edit: changed some terms cus they were incorrect and did kinda made it worse by accident, it wasn't that bad but it was still bad.

A more recent event that also kind of disturbed me: A young artist was a bit too cocky and bragged about how people in their beginner art class were in for a surprise, and then their art was... Not above a beginner's class, so to speak.
Now, I do understand and am on the side of people who explained that they did not need to dismiss those in a beginner class, that we all can learn a lot, older artists explaining their own experience and how this sort of attitude does not benefit you, and even those who were a bit more acid and said things on the line of "kid, you got a big storm coming".
But jesus christ, a great deal of people were absolutely *ruthless*. The template of their tiktok was used and reused for memes (some that did make me laugh ngl, specifically the ones that featured meme art that clearly took more effort than whatever is on my sketchbook right now), sometimes with the kid's face, had their art (that wasn't even really bad tbh) mocked, and I was just there like "????????????"
I saw the comments on the original tiktok. People were straigh out bullying and sending threats to the kid. And when I was checking their other art tiktoks, there were already a couple mean comments coming from the og.
All this harassment to a beginner artist who commited the deadly sin of having a bit of an ego that honestly is quite common around their age, and did not need this level of "punishment".
I bookmarked their apology video because I wanted to give my own reply, but I kept pushing it off due to my anxiety, and now it's gone. I don't really remember their @ to check if they simply deleted the tiktoks or if their whole account is gone, but considered how it all went down, I wouldn't be surprised if it was the latter..

Hey Celestia, your video reminds me of something I've noticed on IG. Over the past few months/past year, I've seen what feels to be more and more comments that don't seem to treat creators as people. I get that trolls have always existed, and of course not everyone is going to agree on everything, but so often now I see posts talking about random cool things and people with "who cares", in surprisingly frequent amounts. As in they weren't even watching content or engaging with that creator AT ALL and the fanart was old. It's clear that they were just trying to cancel a creator because they didn't like the art-style of all things. It was disgusting to watch.
Now I wanted to just touch on how black artists are treated on tiktok. Like we are CONSTANTLY targeted by people who oh, you know, are hella racist and spam report our accounts because they deem our content "inappropriate." So many of my art friends are constantly shadowbanned, because they dare to call out the racist harassment that they face. Not just young black artists, but just poc artists in general. I'm not surprised that the TikTok community is toxic considering TikTok's notoriety.
Lots of people on that platform will find ANYTHING to get unjustifiably pressed over.
There was a house decorator whose whole house is decked out in Disney merch (one of her bathrooms is Little Mermaid themed) and there were people in the comments shaming her for liking Disney. I remember one mean comment saying: "Does your husband not like adults?", insinuating that she is too old to like Disney. And another that says "Tell you're single without telling me you're single." Ironically for that hater, the decorator is married and I wasn't surprised she's married. It shouldn't be surprising if someone is married or single.
As an adult Disney fan, it grinds my gears when ppl view liking Disney as an adult as if it's a crime and unforgivable sin, and by extension, a personal attack against them.
Another instance, a beekeeper TikToker, Texas Bee Works, she shares videos about honey bees and moving bees to new homes to save them. She would always do so without wearing a typical beekeeper suit and lots of ppl assumed she is being careless and reckless not realizing she is a bee expert and understands bee behavior. Some Karens even went as far as to insult her appearance, accusing her of being vain for "showing off her looks" just because she happens to be attractive not realizing she lives in Texas and it's very hot (I know because I live in Texas and the summers feel like living in an oven.)

For the Cookie Run Kingdom remark. They do know these are gingerbread cookies right? They're not human they're cookies they're inanimate objects. In the story they were literally made to be eaten! The whole story revolves around sweets. Their animals are literally cake and they eat jelly. How someone interprets an inanimate object as a human is entirely up to them. If someone wants to interpret a character from the game having light or dark skin then that's their choice. Cuz that's how they interpret the character in their eyes. But at the end of the day they're all just gingerbread cookies. Cookie is literally in their name and they say that they crumble and they have jam for blood. Seriously they're not human they don't have a race. They're literally sentient food get over yourselves!

There are so many videos of dangerous trends that TikTok REFUSES to take down until the LITERAL LAW gets involved, like with the whole ice cream licking fiasco. I mean RUclips lets SOME of that go, like with fractal wood burning videos until Ann Reardon of How to Cook That spoke up about it, but not to the levels of TikTok. It's next to impossible to get the banned account back because tiktiok doesn't care to get legitimate human involvement to assess why anyone would be banned. They just leave it to the bots and the bots have no ability to disprove any claims made against a creator.
People have lost thousands of followers this way and those people struggle to pick the pieces back up, or leave the platform entirely.

I also agree that unsolicited criticism is wrong (unless the artist doesn't care), here's why:
    1. Like you said, some people are more sensitive about it and are still learning, there's nothing wrong with that.
    2. Sometimes a person's criticism is not valid and is extremely biased or rude. They don't take consideration into the artist's feelings. And as for the biased part, the critique's views and opinions aren't always the same as artist's views and opinions. Let's just say the critique says purple and orange don't go together, that's opinion-based, and the artist doesn't have to agree with it, and since it's *their* artwork, *they* get the final say. Just because someone claims something's wrong with their art, it doesn't actually mean there's anything wrong. The artist gets to decide that with their *own* artwork.
    3. Alot of people are too quick to criticize the artist's artwork without actually trying to understand them. The artist drew their art the way they did for a reason, instead of just telling them they're wrong how about actually try to understand WHY they did it and what they were going for?
    3. Not all artists need critique to improve. Some artists are pretty good at improving their art on their own. Not everyone needs to have someone verbally point out their mistakes.
    4. Some artists are already critical about their art, they don't need someone else doing it for them.

Tiktok is the only platform I've ever had to deal with mass unsolicited advice on because for some reason people don't see it as disrespectful like on other platforms. I also absolutely would argue that tiktok is much more toxic then twitter as someone who is on both- i've seen dozens of artists harassed, doxed, and even followed in public now. you seriously don't want to be tiktoks "artist of the week"
I very briefly was on that radar and ended up having to turn off comments when it got out of hand- I had drawn princess Rosalina and had made a normal video that got around a million views when suddenly my comments sections were full of people saying stuff like, "she looks like a cyclops" "she looks like she has cancer on her face" and eventually turned into people commenting hateful and racist comments to people leaving positive comments which is when I decided to turn the comments off. It didn't bother me until my followers were being attacked but I cant imagine being a younger artist and receiving comments like those.

They kind of were. Until the Nsfw Tumblr and former extreme left nutcases from Twitter when it transformed to X (still refuse to name it X) flocked to TikTok. Along with the unfair striking by the platform itself and the platform encouraging predators to roam free (and TikTok SIDING with them), to the moderation being a joke it chased most of the good people off the platform.

which social media is the best hub for artists? where are you posting guys your art? I feel like no matter how toxic the art community is over twitter, i cannot let go because just from my observation its the intersection of all art social media.
    - a lot of pixiv artists are on twitter
    - skeb artists
    - deviantart artists
    - instagram artists would probably claim their username on twitter too and post as well
    - discord artists
    - tumblr artists would cross-post as well
    - i logged in to artfol app but it so quiet?
    - pillowfort paywalled
    - ko-fi isnt rly that social-media optimised
    - facebook i completely forgot this exist
Where are your comfy social media places, artists??

Discord servers and DA. DA isn't the best (I mean, I think they're becoming pro-NFT) and you kinda have to pick your servers wisely.

I've been drawing for around 5 years and I'm still nowhere near being knowledgeable enough to teach others. I don't understand how people who've been doing it for a couple months can believe they can teach others with any level of efficiency at all

one time i saw a tiktok shaming people who draw “pinterest art” (eyes, flowers, disney princess edits, like 2015-style stuff) and I commented like, “yeah it may seem boring but you can’t just gatekeep art from people??” and they kept flooding me with variations of “oh, did you just learn that word sweetie?” “look at you trying to defend this” “try getting some ✨personality✨” and that was when i stopped putting any faith in people who use tiktok

This is very true like right now its a trend going on dogpiling on some kid saying they improved drawing plus size characters. What they shown it didn't look like a plus size character but all the stitches with it is not helping them it's just mocking them and calling them fatphobic for it. Like I understand their reason for not drawing them were iffy but like bullying them jesus christ-

I remember one time I had a tiktok go somewhat viral in the art tok community. it didn't have actual art (it was about animation unions) but I couldn't get over how so many of the popular comments were focused on my appearance. I was compared to a lot of unattractive white boys that day (I am neither white nor a boy) and while I do have thick skin, something about people's eagerness to point out perceived flaws, compare you unprompted, etc. was extremely offputting. it probably has something to do with art tok's young age as well as the fact that all these kids probably have screen times that would make my eyes water. ergo these are very poorly adjusted, immature individuals who aren't interested in being nice on the internet. definitely do not envy those who are tiktok viral. especially on art tok. lol

A lot of the cruelty comes from the age of the people in the app too. Teens and kids unfiltered behave sociopathically and encouraged by this being the norm they just assimilate. That said, Tiktok trending of everything is ruining art, singers have to go viral pressured by their agencies and most art is just refurbished better art from another artist that is not there.

As someone who only just started really getting into pen and paper drawing my only tip for anyone looking to start is DO NOT USE ANY SOCIAL MEDIA, don't post your art anywhere (until you feel comfortable) and most of all don't let other more professional and clean art get you down it will only cause you to envy other artists and only makes you hyper critical and hateful for your own art.

    Thank you for this video.
With that particular example, it felt like the artist was being bullied for no reason (only their art style). Then as people started calling out the bullies, they struggle to come up with justifications for why they were all dogpiling on them in the first place. I have seen stuff like this happen multiple times on Twitter and Tiktok.

I remember one time I posted a video on TikTok that something to do with some dumb argument about Gacha users not being artists (I know, pretty dumb) and some random account (they were a cosplay account) posted their comment saying that I traced my all of my drawings (I only draw with pencil and paper) and there was an argument with people defending me and the Commentator.
Which, unfortunately, made me never post my artwork ever again on that platform.

I'm not a TikTok user- I generally dislike it because I hate social media platforms with algorithms, including RUclips although liking the content here, they use psychological tricks to get me to stay longer and it works too well xD. But the 'terrible art tutorial' problem where they 'give you a fish instead teaching you to fish' is common in RUclips shorts as well- probably because they are the same thing (although having a break with 30 minute long-hour long videos, which is what i personally like)!! So many RUclips shorts give you such a tiny piece of a strategy, that often only works in SOME situations with SOME art styles and especially with only one type of artistic intent. You are left figuring out WHY it is helpful for yourself, usually with the help of those 'could honestly replace the stuff taught at art school' type videos.

The fact that art communities in every social media platform tend to lean toward the toxic after a while is an aspect that needs to be looked into further, especially when you consider that this phenomenon is more prevalent now than in the past, though one wonders what and artist like Picasso would have had to endure had social media been a thing in his time considering we know what the consensus was without it.
Also let's be real, if you don't have an attention span of more than 1 minute, then you really don't want to be an artist.

I'd be interested in hearing more about giving critique online, because the common opinion seems to have shifted drastically since my early Deviant Art days from 15+ years ago.
When I started posting online circa 2006, while "hate comments" did exist, a thoughtful well-meaning critique was seen as a great thing. Nowadays giving unsolicited advice seems to be very controversial. And while I personally go with the trend (as I don't really see the point of giving advice if the person is not receptive to it), I can't really agree with it. From where I'm standing, the internet is a public place and placing your work on a public arena invites reaction from said public. In this way I see it as no different than bringing an artwork to a public park or something. Doing that and then saying "you voicing an opinion about this piece is rude" is weird to me.
Makes me wonder why people post their art online if they're not open to other people's reactions to said art. It's not wrong per se, I just don't understand the mindset.

lmao i was watching tiktok mostly for funny genshin and honkai videos and edits for two years and deleted it recently just because i fed up of a local "art community" and their dramas about birthday arts q_q like... they think that art styles with big eyes somehow a lolicon 🤨
it kinda triggers me because i don't understand how people can be so rude to artists no matter if they draw it for company or individual
its so disrespectful to artists with similar artstyles too
i tried to ban them from my fp but they still appeared there and i just gave up

i remember one time i got unsolicited "critique" on tiktok a few years back because at the time i used an art style that purposefully didnt add pupils to the eyes, since it was inspired by old emo/scene art styles which often did the same thing. i made a video explaining why i made that stylistic choice and showing that i didnt like the look of pupils on my art and it went viral with most people being supportive but some people being downright fucking nasty to me for this apparent "mistake". a similar thing happened when i posted a speedpaint of some cookie run fanart using that same style (with the added bonus of some people being weird about giving the character body hair even tho it was a humanized version of him). that taught me pretty quickly that regardless of if its an actual error or an obvious stylistic choice, the tiktok art community will have a field day with you telling you all the ways they think your art looks bad. i no longer use tiktok and dont plan to go back any time soon >_>...

I'm not sure if this a feature that all users have, or if my account specifically has it for a period of time (another drawback of the app unfortunately), but lately I've noticed if you click a creator's profile from their video, it'll scroll down their page to the video you just viewed. I have found this EXTREMELY helpful in regards to "part 2+" style content.
As for the darker regions of ArtTok, I consider myself lucky to not be on it. Most likely because my account personally isn't all that large, so I don't get many eyes on my content. Even so, I consider it a blessing since it's allowed Tiktok to be a pretty positive place for me.
