- Jason logged onto Brian's computer to look up Brodyquest but he couldn't move the mouse without accidentally clicking on something lewd, improper, embarrassing, or incriminating. It's time Brian learned how to hide files inside of other files, for you know, safekeeping.

Who dislikes Modern Rogue videos? Is it because of the doctor thing?
The Modern Rogue what is the gross porn Brian?
Brian I love the Houdini shirt
why was there a folder named GROSS PORN
These are my FAVORITE kind of episodes, couldn't click fast enough. Anything to do with espionage, hacking, hiding things in plain sight.
Same! I like them and love the same type of shows you said but like the beer, fighting with a longsword and other average stuff is just so boring to me. For example that time they were at the bar with that guy learning how to make jello shots. I can search that up on RUclips and make it myself I don't need a 15 minute video talking about it's history. Ygm.
It's like having shots with a girl and telling her about how vodka was made in russia by vladmir putin and his 4th soldier invented adidas jackets its just boring. It's stuff nobody needs to know.
I'd like to see more hacking based videos. Scamming methods, modern popular hacking methods(much like the thing with hijacking sim numbers now-a-days), viruses and malware, stealth gadgets, etc.
Desperadox23 I dont enjoy listening to how beer was invented and why it was made, it bores the living hell out of me. So does deciphering the law
MATi it might be boring, but it has its place - if everything is up to good standard, it becomes bland. Plus, i just enjoy hearing these two guys, id listen to a podcast they'd make
MATi - if you don't enjoy learning about beer, then i don't believe you've ever done shots with a girl.
Tickleshits beer is for pussies who drink two shots of vodka an pass out
225 GB drive, 3 GB free. Brian & Jason, you guys are monsters
225 GB isn't a lot, you'd burn through that on video or apps instantly
I just figure it's all porn

So I got to the Hitler part, went and read the synopsis of Contact, then watched the whole movie. Then came back and watched the rest of this video. Thank you, @TheModernRogue, for finally convincing me to watch a movie that I think might be in my top 10 favorite of all time now.
That's awesome, Contact is a really excellent film.
dude, that's amazing! so glad you enjoyed it as much as I did.
now I got to watch it
I just did that, can't believe I haven't watched it before.
everyone picking up on the empty "gross porn" folder, not as many looking at the "quit snooping" "and go to" "the modernrouge" cmon brushwood, we know to look for these things by now :D
so it didnt have to do with the suggested videos at the end about bad passwords and subliminal messages?
Dan Farmer There's also a manatee folder :D!
Dan Farmer it was steganography inside a video about steganography! Steganograception!!!
Dan Farmer dont forget the manatees
I also saw a text file called "how to stay married to an asshole" just figured that's something worth noting (6:43 incase you were wondering)
30 seconds in and my impression of jason murphy being the greatest treasure america has ever given to mankind grows even stronger
One of the best case uses for this kind of technology is copyright, all public images that you don't want copied and you want to take said thief to court you can prove they stole it.
Also for pre release material, if the director, the producer and editor of a movie, all got a different copy of the same movie, and they all had a different embedded image, then when one of the copies gets leaked you can find out who leaked it.
unless they ran it through an "optimizer" that could very well strip that out...
that's very smart
Other than the fact that its only in the metadata, not the raw pixel data. Most websites strip metadata, and the only way to hide data in raw pixel data is in PNG's, but will be destroyed if compressed.
I wonder why this cat picture is 35gb.
don't giv'em any ideas
to whoever edits these videos: I Appreciate You
Thanks! I appreciate you, too!
at 6:19 , that misspelled "a" is some real attention to detail my dude, i love that.
If you are editing those episodes. You are doing insanely good job.

Hacking the system:
Brian is all knowing teacher, Jason is clueless student
Modern Rogue:
Jason is all knowing teacher, Brian is clueless student
Yeah exactly, I was thinking that!!
I first discovered these guys in youtube and when I saw an episode of Hacking the system in tv, I was like "Why Jason playing dumb!!"
I looked at the thumbnail and thought what is a Steganog Raphy.
"the city of Japan" England is no longer our city
All hail the return of Jason's mighty beard!

Ummmmmmmmm the folder “gross porn” ?
Alvaro Munoz it’s just a joke, it’s empty
i always had a folder called "pornography" in school, empty of course, and whenever someone saw it they were like "duuude, you got porn on a school computer!?" :P
ecMonify it might be part of the secret idkkkkkkk
stop snooping and go to modernrogue.com
+ParaVet It's not a registered domain yet!!! They should totally buy it
Jason: I had sex with a dinosaur
Me: oh god barny
The Modern Rogue is Cicada 3301 confirmed.
I just watched the @lemmino Video about cicada 3301
Holy shit
Ah,a man of culture
Two things - 1. Welcome back, Jason murphys beard.
2. We used to do it in the 90s with the simple DOS binary command of "append" in pictures. The process is simple if you know DOS. Sadly computer users now depend too much on the software and less on themselves.
I'm going to take this and write a tutorial for people in Venezuela.
Thank you for doing this!
You might want to look up a more detailed video, especially one that takes more modern software into account. Steganography is way easier to detect (when using outdated techniques) than these guys think/ say. I'd recommend the Computerphile video about this topic
Im still waiting!
We need help brother...
I just noticed that at 8:18 when he types "great ideas incoded" the first thing that pops up is "GROSS PORN".
I love this channel.
Me: hears *doctor who related stuff*

I had a whole book in middle school on codes, ciphers, and steganography.
One of my favorite examples is where they took a tiny photo dot, only a few millimeters in diameter, and hid it to look like one of the periods in a document. There's another where you take a pen or a pencil and make tiny dots under certain letters or words in a newspaper to spell out a message. And then there's the classic one where a woman whose name currently slips my mind that tied knots in a long piece of yarn, knitted clothing, and when it was unraveled, could be held up to an alphabet and the knots reveal the letters in the messages.
At one time magic instructions use to be delivered as packing material to keep anyone not in magic from seeing it. So a magician may order a "How To" set of instructions and he may receive a cheap vase with paper wadding to protect it in shipping and in the paper wadding he finds the instructions. This was found in the Tarbell books of magic.
J Lathem That’s fascinating!
I tried to learn about this a couple of months ago.
It never really occurred to me that this is exactly your type of video, but of course it is!
Thanks.
Fuck the Stegosaurus
I just realised given the size of the Stegosaurus, it might require some climbing up ... there
Good luck
Out of context, this is a very strange exclamation.
Random Guy lol
Random Guy I think that's the plan.
In context this is a very strange exclamation.
nice work on everything, the background on the PC, the annotation at 4:56
Jason:Knock knock
brian:who's there?
Jason:boo
Brian: boo who?
Jason: ;)
Brian : BAHHHAHAHHHAH WOOWWWW!!!!!
ME: love you guys BTW!!

Also, the rest of the filenames are great too lol.
This whole video is fantastic.
I HAVE THAT YODA POSTER
Just....thought I'd share...
Roem Daug Cool dude.
Awesome
I like the subtle bit in the title card that says “Audio.” What a great way to foreshadow an episode, by doing it.
I just have one word to describe this episode, hornswoggle :D
Nice!
You *totally* didnt see the video explanation, did you
figured it out myself, was quite a lot of fun and took me quite a few hours
suuuuuurre
I'm pretty sure FIX94 was the last to figure it out before the explanation video went up, I think it was same day but before I started recording that.
Why hide your secrets in pictures when you could just hide it in Jason’s beard
Ever since I was in middle school I name my porn folder an acronym for porn. Something boring. Like Panels Over Relations for Nanotechnology
Lunar Bro Phantom Orchestra (Retro Nightcore)
It could easily pass for an obscure band.
Even better yet I just set the folder properties to hidden, then go to document settings and select: do not show hidden files. It makes folders invisible on the desktop.
6 years later; still one of your best cold opens
There's also a way to hide entire file systems in .JPG files... There were some issues on Reddit with people passing around pirated content that way a while back.
smashhawk Fascinating! I’m gonna look into that.
Jason Murphy Also, I would recommend you check out JSteg - It let's you hide other images and text in JPEG noise, and allows decoding of it later. The larger the original image size (Such as a 4.2K pic of a sunset) the more text and data can be stored, without the suspiciously large file size.
That t-shirt actually sounds awesome! Being the only person able to see the little message cuz youre wearing it. Thats incredible.
The trick here is the in the file formats... ZIP uses the back end of the file to store it's Table of Contents data and BMP uses the beginning of the file. So the files can be combined and not break one another's structure. The ZIP format supports passwords/encryption, that's not a product of the tool they're using. Also ILoveBees ;-)
Chris Monroe
I remember ILoveBees. At least, the ARG, unless you're referencing something more obscure than a viral marketing game from more than a decade ago.
SkuzzyJ No I meant the ARG. That was what introduced me to the format trick, as well as the more obvious hiding strings in the image format that caused the image to look corrupt or poorly encoded. Good times. :D
Out of everything in this episode, my favorite part was Brian mentioning the 13th doctor.
Can you guys do a video on how to make a hidden file on your computer that has no icon and can only be found through a secure search?
i see what you're up to... ;}
Cydonian Games
that's presumably a carryover from the Unix base that Mac OS is written on as every Linux (or Unix-like) operating system works in a similar way, even Android. The files are simply "hidden," though, much like ticking that box on a folder's properties in Windows, and any "show hidden" command (like Control+H in Linux systems) will immediately reveal them to anyone that knows what to do.
Cydonian Games
True. At that point, it's security through obfuscation.
Ideally, you could hide a folder full of weird shit (ya know, "gross porn"/tubgirl style) with whatever messages or information you mean to hide buried within the files. If someone find your stash of internet1.0 shitpost files, they'll likely just assume you're a freak, not some kind of OGA spook with a hidden agenda. Hiding notes or some kind of cipher with a hex editor is another method.
guitargod10940 go to cmd, type "cd (File path)" (the file path for the location of the file that you want to hide). Now that you're in that folder, you type "attrib +s +h (filename)" (the file name should be whatever file you want to hide). To access it again, follow the same process, but use "-" instead of "+" before s and h.
Press properties and select hidden file
90% of the fun of these videos is just brian getting exited about things working/him understanding
I like the Video, but VeraCript is a WAY better tool for this, it has more security, supports every type of data and has a better UI 8User interface). You can hide a VeraCript "Container" and mount it with the password, than you would see a new drive when looking at MY Computer that you can use just like a normal drive. when shuting down it hides the Data back in the Container (The File) and removes the drive (you can also remove it in the program).
I actually played around with VeraCrypt a bit while making this episode. It was pretty easy to have a non-descript file act as container for another file hidden within it that unlocks when you mount it, but I wasn't able to easily have that container file act as though it was just a normal file with nothing unusual in it (like the BMP in the video). Not sure if that's just not something it does very well, or if I just didn't have enough time to test it out properly.
yep exactly this. Vera Crypt is for hiding sensitive data. Like Documents projects & a more secure porn drive. lmao. no one is getting my 1tb rule34 collection niggas!
That's just straight up encryption though, not exactly steganography (except if there are some functions I'm not aware of, haven't used VeraCrypt that much)
Try appending a zip file to your veracrypt file. Zip files index from the end so it should still work.. veracrypt header info is at the start so that should work as well.
Of course forensic tools will probably flag the file as interesting and get a person to examine it.
I'm pretty convinced that new you guys will send each other a bunch of pictures with funny hidden messages:)
I love your original and interesting ideas of your episodes.. im so excited to watch more. Best channel ever
Thanks so much!
FaresHab Thanks!
they totally have to send out a video on how the giveaway steganography is done afterward, id be really interested
Wait.......so i'm a werewolf?
I like to think of this in terms of the message categories in GEB.
Cryptology is hiding the internal message (the info you're trying to convey) and quite often the external message (how to get the info). Steganography also hides the frame message (the cue that there's info to be extracted).
Did anyone else notice the hidden message at the beginning that said “AUDIO”?
That second column of icons though, that was a nice touch
This seems interesting and all, but my only concern with digital steganography is the possible use of hidden malicious software that could fry one's computer.
Definitely. That's always a legit concern.
Software that could fry your computer? Wipe your hard drive, maybe, but not fry it.
I liked the "stop snooping" and "GROSS PORN" in the background.
Windows 95 lmao
For a moment I thoought I was viewing this episode on Internet Explorer!!!
How are you in the comment section of every video I watch?
Kimeshan Naidoo watch the same type of channels
The Nocturnal Alchemist lol
You can also add a second video track to a video file. Imagine all the possibilities with that one.
The opening credits has the word audio hidden in it
Possibly a hidden message in the audio possibly reversed
I see that but I dont get it.
Sounds like voice guy says "the modern rogues are in Florida (inaudible) today" while the audio letters are on screen.
Kenneth Ginger I think the inaudible part is the word “purchasing”
captions say that they "are in four a hertzing"
My favorite intro yet, love the logic
Thumbs up if you love Brandt. Let's make this Brandt-day :D
\(• ◡ •)/
My favorite application of this technique is embedding book pdfs in photos of the cover.

Rebecca is that bit64?
I made it myself, sooo possibly but I highly doubt it.
Inside some CAD drawings, it isn't unusual for someone to zoom in on a period and leave initials or some other brief note. The only giveaway was when it was actually drawn on a plotter, it would spend extra time drawing that period to the point it could go through the paper. If you print such a drawing on a standard printer such as a laser printer, you would never know there was anything extra there.
Any hints on where to start with the hidden message in this video? I saw the intro text said "audio"...
JASONS FACE WAS JUST LIKE “OF FUCKING COURSE IT SHIULD BE GRILLED FUCKING CHEESE BRIAN”
No, you marry the stegosaurus.
Imagine a friend wanting to have you and your mister or missus over to talk over some tea, and you just roll up with a stegosaurus.
Wait, what kind of vehicle would you need to transport a stegosaurus?
A pretty big flatbed lorry?
Or would you just ride the stegosaurus?
Wait, isn't that just the answer he chose?
These are all important questions.
This reminds me of something from a book I read where people being held captive hid an encrypted a coded message in an image. They then used that as an email signature and spread it around until it eventually reached the person who decoded it. That was one of the books in the Shadow series by Orson Scott Card.
yeah! that's a classic example of it.
Thanks for the video and the reply! I would definitely recommend those books if you haven't read them already.
I want to say it was Shadow of the Hegemon.
Heads up, @4:32, "Stenography" is not the same as "steganography". :) Keep it up with the Awesome videos!! ^_^ Always love watching!
I love that there's a "GROSS PORN" file in Brian's computer.
I and many others have been thinking long and hard about this over on the modern rogue sub reddit to no prevail. I love a challenge and all, but you guys may need to throw us a bone.
You should do an episode where you make the rogue's mask. You're always wearing eye protection and stuff so why don't you try to look cool and also be protected? Maybe there could even be a way to attach the gas mask charcoal filter. If you found something like a glass for jam, which is made of plastic, you could glue the lid to the mask and than screw on the filter whenever you need it.
Love these spy themed episodes. Also, Brian! How has you being a Doctor Who fan not come up before?! Love Doctor Who!
awesome video guys. I'm always learning awesome stuff from these.
Thanks!
steganography could easily be combined with encryption, one-time-pad. and the pictures could be published on a popular website(s) with only the intended recipient be in on the msg. don't vary much from the original photo (in terms of individual pixels) and don't change many pixels
Umm. When they saved the bitmap at around 6:00, one of the folders for where to save it to was literally “GROSS PORN” it was all caps too. Idk if it was intentional or not, but I suggest using .25 speed around the 6:00 min mark to check for yourselves
:-D
Yes Brian, i will quit snooping and do that thing now.
Love that you hid something there.
now i’m thinking about the many missed opportunities i had to look for hidden messages in pictures that i’ve came across
Oh my god, back to jasons glorious beard
you can do this already with any type of file including images, mp3, exe, doc, zip etc
I've even seen one where 2 videos where merged and only because the header data got corrupted did I find the hidden movie
I know this is an old video, but I am rewatching this, as I am learning about this in an Ethical Hacker class.
First 10 seconds, Brian what does that leave
7:53 I always like looking at the desktop icons :)
Does the hidden message have anything to do with the strange white dots on the desk that appear to move around without much reason?
Espionage type episodes are the best!! MORE
The intro has AUDIO written in it, and on the laptop's desktop it says, "Quit snooping and go to the modern rogue.com".
And, "GROSS PORN".
There is another way to hide files in images.
1. Create a new folder
2. Select the files you want to hide and zip them up. You can password protect this zip folder if you wish.
3. Place the zip folder and the picture you want to hide it in inside the first folder you created
4. Open command prompt
5. Redirect the file path of the prompt using this line of code cd (file destination) such as cd D:\New folder
6. Type this next line of code. copy (image)+(zip file) (new image)
Example.jpg + hidden.zip hidden.jpg
The best thing about this is that you can really combine any file type you like so long as they can be opened using separate programs.
To access your hidden file again right click on the image you have hidden the zip folder in. Then go to the "Open with" option. Select the needed program to open the hidden files. If it's a password protected zip file then when you go to open it it'll prompt you. Best thing about this is a zip file is already compressed but it doesn't show the image as being compressed allowing for slightly larger files to be hidden.
This video is an example of why you should keep annotations on
Orson Scott Card had an instance of this in his novel "Shadow of the Hegemon" One character was kidnapped by the antagonist and was forced to write propaganda on the internet under a pseudonym in Forums. She attached a picture to her signature of a dragon with a coded message in the corner by using dots. It was a cipher that she knew the protagonist would get using their shared experiences. The Dragon itself was a signal to the receiver that caught his eye. the Cipher started with some personal identifying information to give the clues to break the cipher and let people know exactly who the message was for. Otherwise it looked like a picture of a dragon.
yeah! that's a fantastic example. Loved those books.
Oh yeah! I’d forgotten about that. Brian actually loaned me that book like 15 years ago.
My question is: could i upload that image to a social network and the receiver could just download it and open in o s tools?
really curious if it would work. Thank you for all the cool stuff brian
i love that there is an actual folder called "GROSS PORN", hidden in plain sight @ 5:49
people used to hide stuff on plates and you could only read it through its reflection in a round object like a tea pot or something, pretty cool
The desktop icons were a good touch.
Brian, I noticed you have Hexchat, what IRC servers do you go on?
Easiest Way: Just open a file with a hex editor, copy all and append it to another file (i.e. image) using a hex editor. This works because files have endpoints where the viewing program stops reading so whatever you write after that point is ignored.
Love your videos! Could you guys do a video on using public/private keys, please.
I wish you had done more about how this is actually used today in places like corporate espionage. You need to get a file out, so you throw it into an image and post it to twitter, thus circumventing the corporate firewalls.
I recommend watching the Computerphile video on steganography. This one is nice, but not exactly detailed (especially when talking about detecting steganography)
Why this channel is not on the trending page?
Mahmood Jazmawy Because the trending page is rigged.
jetnut89 i know, i meant that this channel is awesome and it deserves more
"I had sex with a dinosaur" -Jason Murphy 2017
Use this to rickroll a discord day after day and at the end just say stools and let the mayhem begin
@TheModernRogue any chance we could get a hint with the code? been all over Reddit and and twitter and don't think anyone has found it out
At 11:03 Revenge of the sieve.
Yes I am Star Wars fan.
It's really easy to do this with windows. (at least back in XP)
- Take picture
- change extension to .Zip
- open file and dump data into zip file
- change extension back to original format (jpeg)
I think that’s the reverse of what we did?
