- Bending heavy duty wires for your big game lures really can be a pain when using a plier, and the result is often inconsistant and hard to fit into your mold. By building this little wire bender, I have reduced my production time a lot while also getting much more precise and consistant results. Cost - Less than $5

The smartest person for wire bending I have ever seen.
A small piece of flat steel with a ~2mm hole close to one end would be perfect for wrapping the wire around at the end & less awkward than the pliers. Great video & tool, Thank you
Hi there 👋 this is one of the easiest ones to do 👍 no welding needed 🙂 since I don't have drill press, my accuracy will be little off, so I think I will downscale the diameter of the pins a little, anyway I'll be using max 1.2mm wire 😉

Some kind person set my workshop afire last year I lost everything along with all my tools I'd collected over 45 year's so to make something like this would be impossible. GOOD LUCK EVERYONE.

I read through some of the comments looking for someone mentioning adding a drop or two of oil to the tip of your drill bits. Trust me, your bits will cut better and last much much longer. Good video by the way.

Instead of those wood/deck screws or the 4mm bolt you can use cheap or worn out/broke drill bits,they're usually high speed steel unless they're very cheap.They're very strong and resist wear a lot more than screws and the usual grade 5 bolts you get at a hardware store and come in all kinds of sizes.
When marking the bolt you can use a Sharpie or Paint Pen then scratch your mark on it.You also need to use a center punch,even on a drillpress the bit can "walk" throwing off your hole placement....and do use a oil to drill the holes,doesn't matter what type/kind of oil,it does help the bit to cut better and adds to it's life.
I was actually thinking that when i found a broken drill the other day, Better steel and the holes would match exactly. Thanks for sharing anyway

Nicely done. Thank you for the time and effort to make and post this video. About your cutters...I'd hazard a guess you natively speak German so, if that's right, you may like this: Knipex 71 12 200. Baby bolt cutters, made in Germany. Absolutely amazing. I use them for fencing (barbed wire, woven, high-tensile, and for cutting small aircraft cable (1/16, 3/32, and 1/8). Great cutters and I think they're smaller and yet would provide more cutting power than it appeared your set has. FWIW. Thanks again.
Actually not german, but danish - I think it sounds alike if you don't speak any of them.

@@SplishSplashFishing Yeah, that's a hazard of not being in a diverse population (where I am)...it's hard to accurately pinpoint accents. I'm sorry for my confusion. And I wrote the wrong model number for the Knipex, it should have been 71 01 200.

You can save yourself a lot of filing by using steel collars then one of the collars and be adjusted up and down the shaft and held in place with a set screw, then you can remove the set screw in the other collar and replace it with a long bolt for the handle. I know I know....Cost. Anyway, it's worth it. Great job! Fantastic video!

Great video !! A small suggestion... Just before bending at 90° (at 13:00 in your video) you can put a sleeve just above the buckle for even more solidity 😉

Thanks. You could do that, but I am not sure its needed with this lure. Once the wire is embedded in resin it wont move. However, if using the wire for wooden lures it could be a sound idea.
@@SplishSplashFishing not the way I make traces in wooden lures. Everything gets epoxied in. Takes a bit longer but you could pull a truck out of a ditch with it.

Beautiful tool with common tools. I would have welded the handle to the nut, but the epoxy should be plenty strong.
It has been working well with the epoxy through wires for more than 100 lures now. But welding would be easy if you have a welder :D

Instead of glue use low temperature solder so if you need to replace a part of the bender you can just heat it up and take out the bad part and replace it. Just a thought.

Just an idea for you. Instead of using the pliers to wrap the wire inside the mold, use a small diameter pipe with the length needed for torque to wrap your spirals. The wire wont slip out like the pliers allow.

I just made one very similar to this but for 1/8th wire, I had to use a 7/8" bolt and it worked great.

Question: if the two pins on the bolt were of the same diameter, would that affect the bending process? Does the cornering pin have to be smaller than the loop pin? Obviously, I have bolt options that are big enough for those considerations. Thanks!

No doubt it works, but the making is a LOT harder than the watching, the drilling with coated drill bits was incredibly difficult, because the bolts are generally very hard steel indeed so blunted a few drills and even with pilot holes drills wandered and made holes larger than intended.

Awesome Video!! I see you have a Ender 3d printer, do you think a version of this could be designed using PLA for use on smaller wire?
Hi, Jergen. This is a wonderfully simple, rugged design. I know, however, that if I try to make one, I'll run into a problem with the tiny bit of side-to-side movement in my drill press. Drilling the pin hole in the narrow edge of the steel nut-where there's no room for error-will be VERY difficult. You're right that using a small-diameter bit to drill a pilot hole helps with this step in the process, but . . . Any ideas?
On a somewhat related note, I REALLY hope that you'll create and post videos on designing and making the large saltwater lures (including the poppers) that you plan to take on your trip next year. I fish salt water almost exclusively, so I would be VERY interested in seeing how you built these baits! Best, Chris
Hi Chris. It surely can be difficult drilling that close to the edge, but any other option than using a nut, will propably be a bit more costly and also require a lot more work. If you coull find a piece of metal that has roughlyu the same thickness as the nut is high, and the drill both the 12 mm hole as well as the 3 mm you might be able to make a nicer and more sturdy turner. But it will require more work.
About the saltwater lure movies they will surely come. Right now I am mostly practising making poppers :D
Hi Chris. You could try and see if a 2,5 mm pin would suffice for the job. I know the difference isnt much, but it might be just enough. Good luck.

You could file the hexagonal surface of the nut first which would give you more surface area in the corners to start drilling...sorry if I misunderstood
@@SplishSplashFishing Not sure about metric, but imperial “extra heavy” nuts have a thicker wall than standard nuts, and would give more room for error. For example, a 5/8” imperial bolt has a 15/16” hex head, but an extra heavy nut is 1-1/16”. A cheap automatic center punch (spring loaded) is a very helpful tool also! As I’m having to watch this with no sound, you might have talked about all this and I just couldn’t hear it! Great video though!
