I use mini carabiners (1.5 inch size) to secure the double zippers on my backpack. It’s almost as good as a suitcase lock and much more convenient to secure your zippers. I had zero issues in Rome, Florence and Venice. Felt very safe.
3:39 That's exactly what happened to me in Rome. Two teenage girls followed me in the metro and one of them pushed the other - as I tried to keep her from falling, the other girl put her hand in my pocket and took my wallet. They both ran away laughing. Fortunately, I had only a few € in my wallet. I wish cops would do about this huge problem.
Thank you for all your useful tips! I was very aware of it last trip I took in very touristy cities such as Venice, Rome, Naples. I was very cautious and always aware of my surroundings, avoiding crowded public transportations etc overall I was relaxed, not stressed out and enjoying the beautiful 🇮🇹
To be fair pick pockets and theft happens everywhere there are tourists. Be aware of your surroundings, be careful in crowds and it’s probably best not to accept the offer of taking your picture with your phone from a stranger. Your videos are getting better and better 👏🏽
While in Rome back in 2005, I put an empty wallet in my back pocket to see if someone on the subway system would lift it. It didn't get picked. I always use money belts in Italy. Other people to watch out for are the ones wanting you to sign a petition. Your signature in a foreign country is worthless. They may be using that as a ruse to pick your pocket. Or, identity theft.
I lost my passport and vax card in Naples in 2021. I learned from it. I found these “locking” S clips on Amazon that I now use to connect the zippers of my backpack. They are really fiddly so it makes it impossible for a pickpocket to get into your pockets.
Someone tried to pickpocket me at Lucca but failed I kept my bag around me and had my hands on it. I had to hold it high because it were Roma kids who tried to pickpocket, they saw that I saw them trying to steal, but still wanted to try to capture it so I had to move it while holding it, after I left the place I left them behind.
I’m very aware of my surroundings. And will engage anyone, and yes I have on a few occasions, who I deem to have any nefarious intentions. My wife and I use back packs when travelling in Europe. I am most aware of pickpockets in Rome, Florence and Venice. Paris, we’ve been followed more than once. When we do walk around. We use our good old Tumi backpacks with a single compartment double zipper on which we put a combo lock on. Short of being being mugged. The zero amount of concern from being pick pocketed is refreshing with this set up. As for being followed. At 6’2” and athletically built. Once I turn around. The individual backs off very quickly.
I had my wallet stolen on the Rome Metro on the way back from the Stadio Olympico about 23 years ago. It was especially frustrating as I was the one telling all my travel companions to be careful and look after their valuables. It was a very busy metro train and at some point an attractive young woman got very close to me which I am embarrassed to say was very distracting. I assume that either she or an accomplice then extracted my wallet from the front pocket of my trousers. I only realised it some time later when back at our hotel and it was a terribly sickening feeling. It really put a downer on the rest of the trip! Having said all this it’s the only issue I’ve had in over 30 years of travelling there. Love these videos - even as a regular visitor to Italy I still learn some new things!
A "pregnant" young lady attempted to help herself to my wallet from my trouser pocket on the Rome metro. Fortunately I was already suspicious, saw her start to make her move and moved away, so she missed. If you see someone holding something like a jacket or coat over an arm covering the front of their body and potentially other arm, this is a bit of a clue.
Why wouldn’t the city, region or country police/government do something about the pickpocketers? I mean people on vacation shouldn’t have to be this careful or anxious about their items being stolen. I’m supposed to go to Florence in a few weeks and now it feels like it’s a mistake.
we are booked this August 2024 going to Italy and we paid 300$ for city tax, 😢😢 and you feel scare and anxious for the entire 8days..😢😢 ..just to prepare and get incounter with people like this😢😢
@@yola156 - It’s not that bad if you’re PREPARED and you are not alone, if you have a spotter and a code word to say when suspicious characters are nearby! No need to be anxious. Just don’t get too drunk and assume everyone loves you! A nowise pickpocket once sat next to me in Prague metro. He was so nervous that he was noticeably shaking. I started paying attention to him right away. All of his actions were so clearly readable, that I felt pity for him. At some point he tried to reach into my right pocket thinking that there was my phone (*it wasn't*), but I didn't move a muscle. While he was searching for the phone, I slightly leaned towards him and whispered into his ear: "It's in my left pocket". The expression of utter terror on his face was delightful! He turned pale and launched from his seat into the opening doors as a rocket!
Hello, can someone advise me some cheap mobile internet (60 000 Mb) in Italy and where I can buy it with SIM card in Bologna? Preferably near the airport or train station😊
I don't have the answer to that but some service providers in your home country may have a vacation option for internet service. My friend from the US was able to pay a bit extra for service here in Europe.
Unless they use a razor to open it and yes, that happens. My mother-in-law's canvas bag that she was carrying under her arm was slashed open and her wallet taken. She thought she was being smart by putting it in the bottom of her bag. 😢
I'm sure the locals care. Unfortunately most of our local governments in big cities all over the world are run by wanna be marxists with open borders and lax policing.
Your video title is a bit confusing. It's like telling pickpockets to be extra careful so they're not caught. Helpful video content though. I saw a victim in the train who was wearing his backpack in front. He was practically hugging his bag already. And yet 3 girls surrounded him while the train was full. They stole in a blink and left while the train door was still open. It's shocking how they've almost elevated this sin to a skill, without realizing there are painful consequence that will one day haunt them.
Nice video and advice... just wandering why the local government/police do not handle these pickpocket issue seriously...it's damaging european countries image as a safe place to travel...
I was looking through Italian videos and their news websites. What I learned is that the laws there are very lenient. I don't know about other European countries, but in Italy, the prisons are full, and the pickpockets end up with a slap on the wrist even when arrested. Judges would commute their sentence or give a house arrest. They are often underage, pregnant women or women who have small children. In Italy, they don't put them to prison. So, they keep having babies to keep themselves from prison. They are also very good, have been stealing for centuries and teach children to steal. They don't just steal from kids, Italians are upset too.
I’ve been to Asia many times and never had a problem, even the US there’s not much problem ,but anytime I go to Europe it’s a huge problem, like graffiti. Southern Europe is a scum hole.
Their laws are very lenient. Even when they get arrested, they are let go. Most of the thieves are gypsies, often from Eastern Europe, but some are born there. Many of them have been stealing for generations, so they are very skillful. They are often underage or pregnant or have small babies. They don't put pregnant women or those with small children in prison. Rome now also has Peruvian gangs in Rome as well as others, so one needs to be careful of everyone.
Never going to Italy. Since the government decides not to do anything about the crime in the pickpockets, then they don’t value my dollars to visit so I will never go there. Going on vacation and spending the money for vacation is supposed to be relaxing. You shouldn’t have to defend yourself and your belongings every single second so why bother
I am currently in Rome and I totally agree. You have to keep your head on a swivel when walking around with your hand on your bags, it’s so annoying. I just spoke with someone at our 5 star hotel who was just pick pocketed on the Metro. Since I’ve been here we have only taking a taxi or Uber.
I don't think they have the resources and, as long as tourists come, where's the incentive? I am leaving for Rome tomorrow and am taking a €50 flat fare taxicab to my hotel rather than the Leonardo Express or a bus, since I would have to take a taxi from Termini to my hotel anyway. I hate European train stations and I live in Europe. Just too stressful.

I'm glad you had a lovely experience! It's totally possible if you take even just a few precautions
Safety pins also work.

The issue isn't as much cops as the laws. Even when they are arrested, they are often free the same day.

Naw.. it truly is an epidemic here. Super bold and everywhere.
Not true
Not in the US
Not in Japan
It doesn’t happen “everywhere”. Singapore, Japan, Korea laugh at your acceptance of crime.

If I went naked, my 73-year-old body would scare everyone away and I'd have Rome all to myself. 😅

Your bag can still be cut open with a knife. You can be left with a hole. I wouldnt carry my backpack on my back, but in front of myself
When I travel (especially in crowded areas) my best friend is my fanny pack.
And hopefully, not kept above your fanny...😊
Why don't the locals rise up and tackle this issue? Tourism is a big industry and it's a shame the locals don't care.

also, if getting robbed. its nice to have a non working phone in your pocket, so you just give that one away
I'd rather put razors in my pocket. Those safety covers slip off so often. I might even forget to put them on.
You would think that in heavily touristed areas there would be a better police presence.
The fact we just accept this criminality as a normal part of living in or visiting a city is disgusting
Dont go
