As a professional entomologist, that is a Excellent cicada!! These are beautiful❤ The beetle's "shells" are called elytra. The actual wings used for flying are folded up underneath. Caterpillar "pads" are prolegs.
Caterpillar paws is the cutest thing I've ever heard I'm calling them that now!! Also I've heard them called shells on beetles but more often called armor. Beautiful work and inspirational thank you!!
I love this video and have been rewatching it mainly for the use of how to use those symmetry lines. Could you do more videos that demonstrate this? It's been insanely helpful for me getting back into drawing and relearning after years of time off!
That’s beautiful! I like drawing bugs. At the moment I’m working on a set of bugs on wooden slices with pyrography instead of ink, but ink always stays one of my favorite art mediums.
Thank you so much! And that’s amazing! I never tried pyrography, but any time I see a video on it I wanna try. Maybe that’s my sign! Hahah and yes, ink is my favorite too :)
These are so awesome! I do insects myself in either colored pencil with ink or watercolor with ink and this helps a lot to see exactly how to shade and achieve certain effects. Your channel is criminally underrated.
Your drawings are so beautiful. Please slow down and show us more your technique for the hash marks and stippling. And let us know what size tip you use for each section. I couldn't get mine to look anything like yours. the lines were too heavy, the "fur" looked too messy. I slowed down the video and watched the same sections over and over but there were parts missing in the process. I know you don't want to bore people with long repetitive parts but maybe sometimes you could do a video just on the bee's legs for instance or how to get the stippling just right.
Thank you for this video. I really love your process and that you are consistent. Even thought these are fast, they seem attainable. Do you have full videos on Skillshare? Also, when you do the hatching lines, are you using a 005 (heavily used, so the lines are faint)?
Glad you like the process! I do have some classes on Skillshare that are longer and more detailed, but not of this specific drawing. I've been thinking about sharing a long, follow along video with the real time process. Would that help? Each insect took me about an hour so I could post each one separately. And yes, the pen I use the most is the 005! I have some new ones for the darker spots and old, used ones for the hatching. Sometimes I use an old 003 for really light shading too. :)
Thank you for taking the time to respond. I would love to see the full length videos of at least a few of these (or more leaves, etc.). Every time I watch you sketch, I learn something...I just need to keep practicing to make mine look right. HA. @@gio_vescovi
@@lorichristensen7427that’s so nice to know the videos are helping you! I’m actually working on a real time version of this butterfly, should be up next week! I plan to release more real time videos, I think I was insecure cause they are gonna be looong! But if it helps I’ll be happy to post more! Thanks for letting me know and for watching, it means a lot!!
I can appreciate that and am wondering if there's a way to create full length and shortened versions of some videos that you already have footage for so that your followers can choose? I'm guessing that not everyone (like me) wants to see the process / how's / when's and why's of every video. You, as the artist and content creator, get to be selective. HA. thank you so much in advance. I'll be the first to watch with popcorn in my lap. @@gio_vescovi
@@lorichristensen7427 This is exacly what I'm planning to do! Release 2 types of videos for each drawing and see what works best :D Thank you for you input, it helps sooo much!!
Just FYI, bees have 4 wings. That thicker darker line that bisects “the wing” is actually where the bottom and top wings overlap. Flies only have 2 wings.

Awesome tutorial, just so you know, caterpillars are immature butterflies or moths... they spend time growing and then transform into them.
Oh I had no idea they were already butterflies before becoming butterflies if that makes sense hahaha that makes sense!! Thanks for letting me know :)
Thanks to your lesson, I drew cicada and a bumblebee, it turned out no worse than yours.
Thank you))
