Nirvana only released their debut album Bleach in early 1989. The Pixies had already released their first eight-track mini-album, Come On Pilgrim, at the end of 1987. This was soon followed by their first proper album, Surfer Rosa, released in early 1988.
There was an existential, blues-like pain in Kurt Cobain's death rattle. Charles Thompson, aka Black Francis, the lead singer of the Pixies, on the other hand, had a sarcastic, more theatrical approach, staged in the good sense of the word. Black Francis always gave the impression of embodying different characters in his voice, in the manner, all things considered, of David Bowie, who adored the band. What's interesting about the Pixies is that they were influenced by the sounds and spirit of British post-punk rock.

I was so in love with Kim Deal back then. The innocent yet sultry way she sings this still gets me to this day. I’ve always loved how huge her bass line is in this.

They were also a huge influence on Radiohead. When Radiohead started dropping the guitars and changing their sound a bit, Johnny Greenwood said (I am paraphrasing here) 'you can only make so many Pixie ripoffs'. Thom and Johnny both loved the Pixies.
While their songs are simple arrangement-wise, if you dig into their chord progressions, they are pretty weird a lot of the time.

I was a young student and a guy from Boston brought it to my architecture school listened to it in 1988 when I was 22 and have still has me so blown away...I guess i know why Kurt Cobain ..was just crazed for them there is a intense Intelligence and free mind from Charles Thomson or Black Francis...you will be puzzled forever by their brilliance, glad you're on board what took you so long LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh the amazing sounds of KROQ of the 80's it's a alternative station in the USA....Southern California to be exact and we heard everything back then including the Pixies and of course Primus!!!! I'm happy you're exploring these bands it was interesting back then with some pretty groundbreaking music from all over the world heard on this little station in California...thanks for the reaction love the Pixies!!! I am wondering if you have heard of Oingo Boingo? If you have great if not it would be a band I think you would love... if you have I'm interested if you like them or not?
