Lies of P - PS5/Xbox Series X/S Tech Review: 30fps/40fps/60fps Modes Tested - But Which Is Best?
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 2 июл 2024
- Despite a heavy borrowing of ideas from Dark Souls there's much to love about Lies of P - a new Unreal Engine 4 effort from developers Neowiz Games and Round8 Studio. The technical execution here is on-point: we get a 30fps quality mode, a 40fps high frame-rate mode for 120Hz displays, and finally a 60fps performance mode with pruned back visual settings. PS5, Xbox Series X and S are put through their paces here, as Tom picks apart of the merits of each mode.

The uneven frame-pacing is just the devs trying to give us the authentic Bloodborne experience
You aren't wrong lmao.
Ah yes soulsborne games flaws are actually features
Hey, the frame pacing gives us an excuse to blame when we die 😂
💯
however BB has no 40 let alone 60 fps mode 😢
The fact for me this game just worked at launch and ran smoothly is such a rarity nowdays
it really looks good, its really good optimized for pc...and it was their first big game ...game devs are weird...i wonder why its so random
@@yoool7137and it's also UE4 which is common for issues
Atomic Heart also ran really well, despite being a UE game as well (though I really didnt like the game, but to its credit it put UE games from bigger studios to shame in terms of performance.)

@yoool7137
Laziness and greed.
Devs will tell you the game is in a finished state and they're just putting in the finishing touches, the game then releases, and it's an absolute s**t show.
Greed has taken over the gaming industry, with the large majority of games being an unoptimized mess.
Remember when they said they were taking the time they had left in development to give the players the experience they deserved, then the game released and was and still is a broken unoptimized mess.
That game is Jedi Survivor.
AAA game development is in the worst state it has ever been in.
I bet Lords Of The Fallen is a right mess at launch. I'll be surprised if it ain't.
I hope I'm wrong.
Wow a well optimized game in 2023 by a small studio. Great job to the dev team.
People thought it would get delayed too, and it didn't. Everything proceeded at a good schedule it seems
@@cosmosofinfinity The game actually did get delayed. It was supposed to come out in August of 2023.
And on UE4 no less
Oh yeah, its Perfectly optimized and the Game itself also looks Brilliant, too.
+ The Game itself is just pure excellence!!
I am 60 hours in now and can say, its by far one of the best Game i have played in YEARS!
It is also better then Bloodborne (the World itself is a huge improvement, the variety)
On PC, the game also supports ultrawide resolutions. That shouldn't be a big deal, but for whatever reason From Software refuses to allow in their games.
Even when playing Elden Ring, sometimes it will mistakenly be in ultrawide when you first load your game, but then black bars appear after a few seconds. You have to get a mod if you want ultrawide support which can potentially trigger anticheat software.
This seems like one of the most competent unreal engine games this generation. Especially the Series S version looks really good for what it is.
Maybe because it's UE4
Jedi survivor, redfall and Gollum are also UE 4. This is just really well optimized game on front-end and back-end.
Hi-Fi Rush was another great UE4 gamr this generation
@@crestofhonor2349 yeah and one of my Goty with Baldur's Gate 3 that far, and it's to say optimisation and dev care and talent was the reason why some games are well optimized and why some are completely broken. UE4 or UE5, no matter, devs has to understand and use properly the tools at their disposition, because they are just that, tools.
@@Ast0sHbaldurs gate runs terribly that's not a good example.
Such a beautiful and well polished game. Deserves alot of respect
Looks good indeed, too bad Souls style games are not my cup of tea.
It's very polished, but i still think the perfect parry window is too small and the backstab is wonky
@@kmj4nsenI’m not a big souls fan either, but if you have game pass, I recommend giving it a shot. I’m loving it and also playing it in tandem with a few friends, which makes it even better.
@@shreder75I agree about the parry window. Sometimes I feel like I got it perfectly, but it doesn’t register, saying I was too late. But I’ve made it all the way to the grand exhibition so I can’t be that bad at the game. I try every boss solo, but it’s nice to have the summon option in case I’m tired of beating my head against the wall and just want to progress.
Lol an “unreal engine” game being polished. They all look and play the same.
Started on Series S in performance mode, then moved to PC a few hours in, absolutely smooth experience in both cases, can't remember the last time a new multiplatform release worked this well.
Lol series S
Same here. Just started today. Series s version was surprisingly good
I love the 40fps option. I can barely notice the difference between 40 and 60, but the difference between 30 and 40 is night and day.
Agreed
Typically, I go for performance mode. This game tho, is straight up gorgeous. Can't stop walking around and just enjoying the visuals.
Quality mode @ 40fps is just perfect for me. Uneven frame rate/pacing and all. Doesn't bother me as much as I thought it would
@@LeiaPetz personally can’t even notice it. 🤷♂️ lmao.
@@leanlifter1 okay lol.
The frame pacing issue is negligible at 120hz, compared to let's say a steam deck at 40hz. The stutters only last for a third of a frame
I really liked this game a lot. Not just a decent clone of From Software's games, it truly lives up to them. Amazing first game out of this studio, and for a country that doesn't typically make games like this.
Second game actually if I'm not mistaken. Bless Unleashed was their first.
cant agree more. its not souls-like game, its souls game on its own for me
@@ahriikwe dont talk about that
Agreed. Lies of P is a great game. Looks fantastic, plays very well and runs smooth. Can't wait to see more of them.
Major kudos to Neowiz, apparently it is possible to release a good looking AND properly performant game at high resolutions to boot! 40 fps quality mode for me, wish more games had these, if they fix the uneven frame pacing it would be perfection.
The fact that this game was made by like 40-70 people from a south Korean dev team that only has 1 other game under their belt is remarkable.
I played on PC and it's one of the best optimized PC games released this year. From graphical fidelity alone, it's probably the best looking souls game of all time. The art direction is great as well to go with the great visuals.
This is one of my favorite souls games ever, right up there with my favorite From Software games.
Really hoping the same can be said for Lords of the Fallen on PC. That game looks very graphically demanding tho so we will see
@@CheckmateStallioN
I am having a really hard time getting excited for that. They've hyped up the graphics with it being in Unreal engine 5, but honestly....I think Lies of P looks better, like, a lot better. Especially in some of the gameplay for Lords of the fallen things like blood splash effects and other effects look straight up bad. And even the best parts just look average to me. The art design just doesn't do it for me. The combat and enemy a.i. just doesn't look great to me either. I'm hoping I'm wrong, but so far I'm just not excited for it. Especially coming straight from Lies of P I feel it'll be disappointing in comparison.
@@Trio3224 Lies looks very good but I wouldn't be surprised if the footage you are referring to from Lords is pre alpha footage or console footage. I'm sure on PC maxed out it will no doubt impress. The earlier footage of LotF doesn't look near as good as the latest footage they showed
@@CheckmateStallioN
No I'm talking about even the new footage they just released like 5 days ago. For me, everything just looks kinda bland and generic, and many of the effects like blood splashes just look like low res stock elements they just stuck on. And I feel it will not look anywhere near as good as Lies of P.
And obviously, games always look better when they're not running thru RUclips compression. I'm sure the game will look better running natively on a high end PC. But the kinds of issues I have with the art direction and poor effects aren't things I think will look better once I see the game in person.
That's just my opinion tho. I feel like many souls fans are excited for Lords of the Fallen and I genuinely hope it changes my mind and delivers.
@@Trio3224 we will have to wait for Steam reviews and DF's deep dive. I hope it delivers as it has the potential
Absolutely love this game. A true love letter to Fromsoftware. But having played through it, I can confirm it stands on its own.
I agree. At first I thought it was just a bloodborne type game, but it does do its own things
Im trying to gage how far I am in the game right now (for time allocation for other games i am and will play). Im early in the actual factory of the factory area. Also is the drop you get from the bot that drops through the floor worth fighting it for?
@@xxxshinomorixxxreaching the end of the first quarter I would say. As for the loots, some upgrade mats if I recall correctly. The trick that worked well for me was waiting for his dash attack, dodge backwards when he starts it (its length is based on your position when he initiate it) then strike some few hits and run back to the opposite side of the arena
@xxxshinomorixxx you're almost about 10% through the game at that point. I dont remember what it drops but i always kill all enemies regardless.
I would say it's heavily inspired by, as in it takes what was good, adds some variety and refines/innovates core mechanics. Not a complete rip, not totally original, very much in-genre but yep I'm more excited to see what they'll do next than I am to see what From do next, because this is a highly polished experience right out of the gate. If you compare it to the original Demon's Souls which was a lot more rough and had fewer tutorial notes, it is more player friendly too, despite still being pretty hard in places.
Such a wonderful game! Got all achievements a few days ago on XSX n was left wanting even more 😈. Can’t wait for DLC hehe. Played it on Performance mode w/ High FR off. I did notice (sometimes big) drops in framerate against certain very large enemies (won’t spoil it for anyone still playing) especially when they r surrounded by other enemies. Great video/tech analysis!
Door guardian ruined the game
@@dogenaire69420 How? Just hit his leg and he falls down easily.
What's the issue?
His attack patterns are really basic too.
If you don't like big, slow boss with large attacks, then shouldn't you complain about the rematch with the Parade Master?
@@dogenaire69420 The door Guardian is a joke. Lol
Bravo to the team for being able to pull this off even on PC with Unreal Engine 4. Many larger developers have games that performed much worse with the same engine.
Like Jedi survivor lol
I think the weapon building mechanic is the most fun. Mixing the effects is cool too, I just love the reliance on straight melee and timing vs magic (my souls go to is magic, its pretty easy lol). It forces me to actually get good at the very precise timing. Its just an overall precise game
The degraded shading is suggestive of some kind of real time GI right? I would usually expect baked shadows to have very minimal performance impact, this is actually one of the most noticable settings downgrades I've seen recently from quality to performance, and it feels like it's in a different way than I expect
Well done with the optimization of this game!
I’m really interested in hearing their thoughts on the PC version. I found it to be fantastic and one of the best PC ports out there. No stutter or frame drops at all.
Agreed, it runs amazing on both the 4080 and the Rog Ally. Becoming my favorite game of the year!
Played it at launch and I was surprised by how well optimized this game is and even supports ultrawide. Unlike Fromsoft's games like Elden Ring for example, you had to dig in the files to make it work..
I agree, it surprised me to see how stable and consistent the PC version is and it made me wanna support these devs even more.
Runs at a stupidly high frame rate at 1440p maximum settings on my 4070ti, smooth as butter and really happy with it. Don't even need to use DLSS or any upscaling which is a welcome change.
Well, that settles on what platform I'm buying my copy on, once I have the time. PC it is!
I was absolutely amazed by the fact that not only is this game a consistent 60fps on Series S it also looks fantastic. This being on gamepass was a bigger win than Starfield for me.
Why’re you celebrating the fact that you’re borrowing games? 😂😂

Finished the plat on this a few days ago and it was phenomenal. Really looking forward to both the planned DLC and whatever this studio does next. A definite must play for any fans of the genre.
You're absolutely right, it is truely Phenomenal!!
I’m having a blast playing this at the same time as a couple friends. We’re all at the exact same spot in the game which makes it so much more fun, giving each other tips and seeing how our builds and choices differ from one another.
I was expecting it to run at a dynamic 1440p resolution on the performance modes. It's insane that's it's lowest resolution count is still above 1440p while keeping a steady 60fps and occasionally getting to a near 4k resolution. That's some great optimization.
Very well presented! Informative and easy to understand.
When I tried the demo, I left unimpressed. However, I tried it out again on Gamepass and loving it. It took playing for a couple hours to get into it and really appreciate all the interesting gameplay mechanics that open up as you play.
Haha, it was the same for me, was very hyped and played the demo, and i didn't like it much.
Then i played it also on game pass, and after 3-5 hours it just "clicked" and since then i LOVE this Game!
I can say...it's a Masterpiece
So turns out you CAN make a beautiful soulslike game, that works great on every console since day one without dozens of patches... interesting
Not sure but in performance mod on PS5 looks like there is some artifacts around hands (for example) from image reconstruction
I was hoping Tom would review this, as he looks quite like the games protagonist! Nice review
PC version deserves a look. Well optimized and no stutter. You guys should highlight games that are well made on PC instead of just looking at the terrible ones.
Really good release. Refreshing that a new game just works on all platforms. I switched between playing on max settings 165fps on PC to my Bedroom Series S in Performance Mode and the Series S held up completely well.
After seeing NotebookCheck's benchmarks on LoP (lower end gaming laptops easily getting 1080p 60fps) and stable performance modes on all consoles, a fairly well optimised Souls-like at/above 60fps feels illegal, something's not right.
I feel like the reason the game has frame pacing much like bloodborne is that it's running adaptive vsync - which cuts the input latency in half compare to vsync at 30 fps, and for a game like this that needs quick button input it's understandable
Would be interesting to see you guys analyzing the MacOS port of Lies of P, it's one of the first in the upcoming "wave" (if we can even call it that) of AAA games coming to Apple platform.
Not sure if it's mentioned, but two things I've noticed.
I had to turn off vrr on xsx because the game flickers nonstop with it enabled. And...
In the game options, hdr off means it's actually ON. So if you're wondering why it looks dim and washed out on your hdr display, that's why.
The performance mode on this game makes the shadows flicker on my LG C2 when in 120 hertz with VRR enabled. Had to cap to 60 hertz to stop the shadows flickering. It's a known LG OLED bug with VRR and 120 hertz
Series X has some flickering issues when using VRR. The fix was to make sure FreeSync is enabled and then change the settings in my TV from "Wide" to "High". That completely got rid of the flickering.
I love the High Framerate Quality mode on my series x. Feels veeeery smooth and looks insanely good. I wish every new game would offer this (looking at you starfield).
Been waiting for this. Thanks DF!
I have had exactly same flickering issue but my issue was flickering 1 or 2 Times per hour. I turn off hdr and hdr 10 in my xbox Series x and that issue is solved thank you so much for your info
How did the publisher/dev go from Bless and Bless Unleashed to Lies of P? Amazing game can't believe they pulled it off
I love these videos but I'm also so happy I almost never notice any of this stuff when I'm playing.
Looks pretty cool! I've been using the Otaku switch for a couple years now. It seems fine too. I like that it's completely mechanical and just simple.
Every new game now should have a 40fps mode on console
40fps 😂😂 console really sucks
I’m playing on ps5 and this game is fantastic, I can’t believe it was made by such a small, relatively unknown developer! And the fact it runs at 60fps and still looks that good on series s is amazing
This is a great technical review and helped guide my purchase of the game, knowing I'd take 60FPS and seeing it was a smooth experience to do so. Thanks Tom!
My one tiny critique is that those guys whom you identified as policeman are actually more akin to guardsman or watchman (probably tending towards the latter based on one of the later boss battles). You first encounter them at the abandoned train station, they're holding STOP🛑/GO 🟢 signal signs as you would for marshaling old fashion train systems, so that's what they are. If they were policeman, based on the gothic/Victorian type setting they'd be more likely to have flatter caps and whistles
I used the 40 fps mode and didn’t really notice any issues. It felt very smooth and if there was frame pacing issues I just don’t notice it as I’m playing. It felt great and looked great
With vrr its not very noticeable.
40fps steam deck mode lol.
Agreed, on my XSX using VRR it felt butter smooth.
I’m playing on the 60fps performance mode on Xbox Series X and the volumetric fog is definitely present in the same way as it is in the quality mode in this digital foundry video and I’m for sure so I’m wondering if this video was made prior to the most recent patch cause the volumetric fog isn’t reduced or disabled at all in the performance mode for Me on XSX and that includes the hotel lobby and all the other areas I’ve seen so far
Nice, love me a Tom joint. Good video.
I really hope you can take a look at the MacOS version. I would like to listen your take on it. Thanks!
I've only been playing on pc and I have to say, this game runs absolutely beautifully. it's so refreshing to have a well running game at launch.
Indy devs actually optimizing how it shouls be. On the other hand we have AAA devs releasing halfe done games, and saying that well made games are "anomalies".
Thanks for all the information, Tom, this might say, is a game really taking the Xbox Series S as a base for the game to offer solid 60 fps experience and also bring not much, but a little more of a touch of quality with the XSX and PS5 versions and the quality shown really invites to play
Love to see more games support 40fps mode on 120hrz displays
I rather see them focus on making 60fps. I have a 2021 TV and it doesn’t have 120hz. Many people don’t have TVs that support 120hz.
I agree, I really wish we would see a lot more games provide 40fps modes
@@wertywerrtyson5529you should really get one
@@wertywerrtyson5529what? The games that offer this already DO have a 60 fps mode. Your comment makes no sense “I don’t have a 120hz tv, so that means NO ONE should benefit from one” like bruh what?
@@tehCostHD I mean they should focus on making a good 60hz experience rather than focusing their resourcing on something only a minority of people can enjoy. If they do offer a good 60hz mode than of course it doesn’t hurt to also have a 40hz mode. I’m just afraid developers will forget about 60 and just target 30 and 40 fps.
Just got the platinum trophy a few days ago, and I gotta say this might just be one of the best games I've ever played; I enjoyed it immensely, a solid 9/10 imo. Souls fans are eating good rn.
Great game, finished it few days ago and now eagerly waiting for the DLC.
Love your videos, but where ia The crew motorfest review?
Great breakdown as always
There's a bit of pop-in on the Series X and frame pacing issues in performance mode too.
Finally, I was waiting for this game on DF. Now we also need a PC analysis.
Excellent elocution. Thank you.
was the locomotion stutter fixed on xbox because they df didn't mention it at all here
I’m really impressed with the Apple silicon version. With more native Mac OS games coming out does DF plan to do analysis on them?
I have a question: if I set the game in quality mode 30 fps on my PS5 it doesnt look like this, it feels like the game slows down. Like choppy and laggy (Dont say it's how it is, it's my eyes, cause i replayed bloodborne at 30 fps last week and i have no problem with 30 fps). I use a Samsung tv 4k resolution with 60 Hz, what can be the problem? I have to set the output on the tv at 30? Can i even do that?
I do own a SX but I also own a 1X (SSD upgraded), I decided to play on my 1X to save couple of GBs on the SX and I was quite impressed. It works really great on 1X! I'd be curious to see the numbers haha
One X with good internal SSD like MX 500 or 870evo Is a Beast.
I hope they add VRR for the 40fps mode in a future update
What’s going on with DF constantly omitting the PC versions of new games now? Still haven’t see an Armored Core 6 PC tech review. Used to be that DF would include all the consoles plus PC in the initial tech review. Now we are lucky if we even get a separate PC tech review at all.
Are you ever going to make video about FSR 3 ?
It seems like a 60FPS mode running around 1440P with the quality settings could be future option for XSX and PS5.
Lower the brightness on Performance mode for the deep black shading
i was kind of waiting for a fsr3 video, but i guess this will do for now
The PC version is an absolute joy. It runs like a dream, even on the Steam Deck at 720p/40fps on Medium settings.
I would have loved to see the 60 fps mode have the higher light settings and a lower resolution. I think that makes a lot more difference than the extra, idk, 300-ish p would have made
With FSR2 to upscale the resolution back to 4k, yeah. Otherwise it's probably not worth it
Wow, a game with performance that makes sense!
I wander if they could even pull off a 120fps mode, even if they have to go as low as 540p on Series S. Reconstruction can do wanders at such high frame rates, but it works better when the starting image is at least 1080p.
Damn, that's some dedication. They even included the frame-pacing issues at 30 fps that Bloodborne is famous for.
love all these options on console. played most of the game and its a gem. Runs completely smooth with TONS of resources to spare on my PC at 1440p 120fps using R7 5800x, RTX 3080 12GB, 32GB DDR4 3200MHZ CL16. Nothing but good things to say about performance and gameplay alike. Amazing job by the Devs👍
How does the 40fps mode look compared to PC settings. Is it the equivalent of high or max?
I've been playing it on Series S in the performance mode. Except for some bluriness of character's faces during dialogue and some blurry particle effects, I've found the experience to be great. The visuals are full of style, so I'm not bothered by any detail i miss.
Have you had jagged geometry inside the hotel? That's been a major problem for me on Series S in performance mode. The character models can be really rough as well, with the hair being a big issue for me. Not enough to ruin the experience, but man it was a shock the first time I got to the hotel.
I knew I was going to love Lies of P from the first time I saw it. Felt the same way the first time I saw Bloodborne. Awesome game. Awesome year in gaming.
I'm able to play this game in upscaled 4k using fsr, at 60fps on low settings using my rx480 and fx8370... I've not even been able to play recent games at all, let alone with good settings. Crazy good optimisation.
Why? Play high setting 1080p
Lol I know its not the same thing, but I remember the days when less fog went to the more powerful console. Fog was used to hide the lack of processing power. Turok is a good example.
I was hoping they would touch on the HDR problems. It currently looks better in SDR than in HDR. Would have liked to see that addressed
I also ended up turning off HDR. It seemed like it just washed the image out.
@@bauul. yeah it's a shame too because proper HDR would seriously elevate the lighting and SSR's in this game. Which are good, but HDR would make it pop. Thankfully SDR is actually pretty well done in this game. Definitely doesn't look bad
Why does the hfr toogle does not work with perf mode ?
It should allow an uncpaped framerate for vrr screens
I put about 40 hours into it, even did a NG+ and overall I can say it's a great game, really enjoyed it. I also want to let people know that IT HAS A FANTASTIC SOUNDTRACK some seriously great tracks. I really had no issues with the game in general. The voice acting, story, combat, atmosphere, music, pretty much everything was awesome.
The devs hinted at their next project/sequel possibly in the game, so I'm really hoping we see that down the road, they really have a pretty solid series/idea here if they can start making Souls-Like games based off fairy tales.
100% THIS!!
You nailed it! 😉
Fuck yeah! Was wondering if you were gunna do this, I’m loving the game.
Did they fix the flickering VRR issue on Xbox consoles? I've had to disable VRR in a system settings on launch, otherwise all the blacks are flickering as if contrast setting is constantly changing
VRR works fine at 60hz, the flicker only occurs at 120hz +VRR for me (LG C1, Series X)
How long are the loading screens?
I saw a lot of screen tearing in the demo. I'm glad it seems to have been fixed now
Well there you go AAA Western devs it is possible to release a game that is feature compete, runs very well and looks really nice. All while providing a quality game with lost of depth and variety. This is impressive for sure this game but the thing is also many companies or devs go for open world games and don't optimize, have many boring NPC's and such things. They think we all need Witcher 3 Far Cry Creeds that aren't even good video games but we actually need more games that are like Lies of P and like PS2/PS3 era in modern with refined gameplay and machanics, awesome locations. I'm blown away that this game managed to come out of nowhere and stand toe-to-toe with other major releases in one of the most stacked release windows we've ever seen. I'm currently still knee-deep in Armored Core 6 and Phantom Liberty, but Lies of P will most definitely get some time out of me before the year's out.
Just gotta get through Spider-Man 2 and Alan Wake 2 first, lol. What a year for great games.
Nobody mentions Steelrising when talking about this game. Very strange. They have the same plot/setting, basically.
Honestly, I wouldn't mind if they turned on the GI back with lowering resolution to like dynamic 1440 to 1620 -ish. Also, why do frame pacing issues happen at 30 and 40 FPS, but not 60? Like, Performance mode runs well both on 60hz and 120hz screens, but 30 and 40 don't for some reason? Or does this only occur when the framerate doesn't match the refresh rate, and it doesn't happen in Perf. mode because it runs at 60hz and doesn't turn on 120hz on the TV?
Having to turn off VRR because of the terrible flicker is unfortunate. Otherwise, this is a very fun experience if you’re a souls style fan.
I'm on NG+ and i play it on performance mode.
It's flawless ❤
Can't believe they emulated Fromsoftware down to the frame pacing issues! Seriously, this is a polished and honestly classy release. Well done!

Is it normal dynamic resolution? or does it implement FSR?
What a beautiful looking game that runs almost flawlessly on the Xbox Series and PS5.

I was shocked how good 40fps works on my TV. I thought it was 60, since there was no description how this higher frame rate mode works in quality mode. Game looks and feels great. Hope for DLC and def. will buy next installments.
Pretty hard to tell the difference as analog gamepad sticks are inherent with massive input lag.
