Bravo to the team for being able to pull this off even on PC with Unreal Engine 4. Many larger developers have games that performed much worse with the same engine.
I’m really interested in hearing their thoughts on the PC version. I found it to be fantastic and one of the best PC ports out there. No stutter or frame drops at all.

The degraded shading is suggestive of some kind of real time GI right? I would usually expect baked shadows to have very minimal performance impact, this is actually one of the most noticable settings downgrades I've seen recently from quality to performance, and it feels like it's in a different way than I expect
I’m playing on ps5 and this game is fantastic, I can’t believe it was made by such a small, relatively unknown developer! And the fact it runs at 60fps and still looks that good on series s is amazing
I was expecting it to run at a dynamic 1440p resolution on the performance modes. It's insane that's it's lowest resolution count is still above 1440p while keeping a steady 60fps and occasionally getting to a near 4k resolution. That's some great optimization.
Finished the plat on this a few days ago and it was phenomenal. Really looking forward to both the planned DLC and whatever this studio does next. A definite must play for any fans of the genre.

Really good release. Refreshing that a new game just works on all platforms. I switched between playing on max settings 165fps on PC to my Bedroom Series S in Performance Mode and the Series S held up completely well.
I think the weapon building mechanic is the most fun. Mixing the effects is cool too, I just love the reliance on straight melee and timing vs magic (my souls go to is magic, its pretty easy lol). It forces me to actually get good at the very precise timing. Its just an overall precise game
I’m having a blast playing this at the same time as a couple friends. We’re all at the exact same spot in the game which makes it so much more fun, giving each other tips and seeing how our builds and choices differ from one another.
The developer should be praised for delivering not only a fantastic game but one that looks better than most “next gen” games but also runs better as well.
PC version deserves a look. Well optimized and no stutter. You guys should highlight games that are well made on PC instead of just looking at the terrible ones.
I used the 40 fps mode and didn’t really notice any issues. It felt very smooth and if there was frame pacing issues I just don’t notice it as I’m playing. It felt great and looked great
Well there you go AAA Western devs it is possible to release a game that is feature compete, runs very well and looks really nice. All while providing a quality game with lost of depth and variety. Hats off to lies of p and the hard working people who made it. Thank you for doing your job and doing it well. After this success I hope that your company continues to grow and gets all the praise it deserves. 👏👏👏👍👍👌👌👌👌👌
This is impressive for sure this game but the thing is also many companies or devs go for open world games and don't optimize, have many boring NPC's and such things. They think we all need Witcher 3 Far Cry Creeds that aren't even good video games but we actually need more games that are like Lies of P and like PS2/PS3 era in modern with refined gameplay and machanics, awesome locations. They don't even make or rarely make normal action adventures or games like Bioshock. Triple A is terrible these days.
True 4k on PS5 and Series X and 1440p on Series S, THAT’S WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT!!! That’s how you make a game for these current generation of consoles 👏👏👏👏👏👏
After seeing NotebookCheck's benchmarks on LoP (lower end gaming laptops easily getting 1080p 60fps) and stable performance modes on all consoles, a fairly well optimised Souls-like at/above 60fps feels illegal, something's not right.
I feel like the reason the game has frame pacing much like bloodborne is that it's running adaptive vsync - which cuts the input latency in half compare to vsync at 30 fps, and for a game like this that needs quick button input it's understandable
Ι finished the game yesterday, it's truly a great game. Maybe a bit too hard in some areas but still very fun to play It looks great too. Definitley recommended to soulsborne fans The optimization here from the devs is great in all machines, really good job from them!
Not sure if it's mentioned, but two things I've noticed. I had to turn off vrr on xsx because the game flickers nonstop with it enabled. And... In the game options, hdr off means it's actually ON. So if you're wondering why it looks dim and washed out on your hdr display, that's why.
What a beautiful looking game that runs almost flawlessly on the Xbox Series and PS5. Design decisions make a difference and decision to use UE4 paid off in spades as the resolution stays high even in performance mode. The protagonist remains fully visible at all times unlike Jedi Survivor and FF16.

Being my first souls-like I cant compare to previous games so I judge the game for what it is, and cant miss out other games feature cause I never experienced those.
I put about 40 hours into it, even did a NG+ and overall I can say it's a great game, really enjoyed it. I also want to let people know that IT HAS A FANTASTIC SOUNDTRACK some seriously great tracks. I really had no issues with the game in general. The voice acting, story, combat, atmosphere, music, pretty much everything was awesome. The devs hinted at their next project/sequel possibly in the game, so I'm really hoping we see that down the road, they really have a pretty solid series/idea here if they can start making Souls-Like games based off fairy tales.

Nothing but good things to say about performance and gameplay alike. Amazing job by the Devs👍
I knew I was going to love Lies of P from the first time I saw it. Felt the same way the first time I saw Bloodborne. Awesome game. Awesome year in gaming.
Series X has some flickering issues when using VRR. The fix was to make sure FreeSync is enabled and then change the settings in my TV from "Wide" to "High". That completely got rid of the flickering.
I'm able to play this game in upscaled 4k using fsr, at 60fps on low settings using my rx480 and fx8370... I've not even been able to play recent games at all, let alone with good settings. Crazy good optimisation.
If anyone has issues with stuttery character movement on Series X, it's the controller's fault, not animations. Try a 3rd party controller like 8bit do Xbox pro 2, or a DS4/Dualsense with an adapter and no more stutters ! Series X and Xbox one controllers analog movement is stuttery for some reasons.
I don't get why some developers constantly complain about Series S, yet some just create a perfectly crafted game for the smaller brother of X - somewhat out of the blue.
Interesting is it not? While it is clear the Series S will have cuts in some titles, it makes one wonder just how badly optimized a lot of the game releases really are.

I can play on a smaller monitor and pretend I can't see the difference But at 9:32 in the video I can see that performance mode removes the waifu... That is a sacrifice I am not willing to accept!
It's remarkable that this game is able to achieve on Consoles what both Bloodborne, Dark Souls and Sekiro failed - this is a true Love Letter and Spiritual Successor of Sekiro and Bloodborne - perhaps the Bloodborne 2 of this Generation. I am glad to see there is finally a developer who knowns how to properly implement a high framerate mode. I didnt get the game at release because the framerate in the demo was not 100% stable, but after watching this video, i will get it at full price to support the developers. Maybe its time to get another option : "Super high framerate mode" which guaranty 60 fps without frame pacing issue with even lower graphics setting. I bet it would be popular.

Yep, this game is weirdly optimized but I’m also not surprised about it considering it’s an amateur dev who made a copycat game for easy recognition. Very little original ideas went into this.
The performance mode on this game makes the shadows flicker on my LG C2 when in 120 hertz with VRR enabled. Had to cap to 60 hertz to stop the shadows flickering. It's a known LG OLED bug with VRR and 120 hertz
This is a great technical review and helped guide my purchase of the game, knowing I'd take 60FPS and seeing it was a smooth experience to do so. Thanks Tom! My one tiny critique is that those guys whom you identified as policeman are actually more akin to guardsman or watchman (probably tending towards the latter based on one of the later boss battles). You first encounter them at the abandoned train station, they're holding STOP🛑/GO 🟢 signal signs as you would for marshaling old fashion train systems, so that's what they are. If they were policeman, based on the gothic/Victorian type setting they'd be more likely to have flatter caps and whistles

The trick that worked well for me was waiting for his dash attack, dodge backwards when he starts it (its length is based on your position when he initiate it) then strike some few hits and run back to the opposite side of the arena
@xxxshinomorixxx you're almost about 10% through the game at that point. I dont remember what it drops but i always kill all enemies regardless.
I would say it's heavily inspired by, as in it takes what was good, adds some variety and refines/innovates core mechanics. Not a complete rip, not totally original, very much in-genre but yep I'm more excited to see what they'll do next than I am to see what From do next, because this is a highly polished experience right out of the gate. If you compare it to the original Demon's Souls which was a lot more rough and had fewer tutorial notes, it is more player friendly too, despite still being pretty hard in places.
Such a wonderful game! Got all achievements a few days ago on XSX n was left wanting even more 😈. Can’t wait for DLC hehe. Played it on Performance mode w/ High FR off. I did notice (sometimes big) drops in framerate against certain very large enemies (won’t spoil it for anyone still playing) especially when they r surrounded by other enemies. Great video/tech analysis!
Door guardian ruined the game
@@dogenaire69420 How? Just hit his leg and he falls down easily.
What's the issue?
His attack patterns are really basic too.
If you don't like big, slow boss with large attacks, then shouldn't you complain about the rematch with the Parade Master?
@@dogenaire69420 The door Guardian is a joke. Lol
Major kudos to Neowiz, apparently it is possible to release a good looking AND properly performant game at high resolutions to boot! 40 fps quality mode for me, wish more games had these, if they fix the uneven frame pacing it would be perfection.
Have they fixed it ? I'm thinking about jumping into it soon
@@alexispicard1566 sorry I have not played in a while and my PS5 is currently in storage so I can't check but honestly the pacing issues were not enough to stop me from enjoying the game, it is a good game so if you want to play it and you can get a good deal then I say go for it
Bravo to the team for being able to pull this off even on PC with Unreal Engine 4. Many larger developers have games that performed much worse with the same engine.
Like Jedi survivor lol
Well done with the optimization of this game!
I’m really interested in hearing their thoughts on the PC version. I found it to be fantastic and one of the best PC ports out there. No stutter or frame drops at all.
Agreed, it runs amazing on both the 4080 and the Rog Ally. Becoming my favorite game of the year!
Played it at launch and I was surprised by how well optimized this game is and even supports ultrawide. Unlike Fromsoft's games like Elden Ring for example, you had to dig in the files to make it work..
I agree, it surprised me to see how stable and consistent the PC version is and it made me wanna support these devs even more.
Runs at a stupidly high frame rate at 1440p maximum settings on my 4070ti, smooth as butter and really happy with it. Don't even need to use DLSS or any upscaling which is a welcome change.
Well, that settles on what platform I'm buying my copy on, once I have the time. PC it is!
I was absolutely amazed by the fact that not only is this game a consistent 60fps on Series S it also looks fantastic. This being on gamepass was a bigger win than Starfield for me.
Why’re you celebrating the fact that you’re borrowing games? 😂😂
@@hakangokhan9434 gamepass is good for trying out games. Yeah you don’t own the game, I prefer to buy mine. But for gamers on a budget, it’s a fantastic deal.
@@hakangokhan9434he is playing the game and likes it....whats the problem?
@@ctestdummy83 he’s not just playing the game and liking it he’s mentioning lame pass hence my question wtf is wrong with you?
@@hakangokhan9434I really don’t like microsoft either, but you’re being weirdly aggressive here
When I tried the demo, I left unimpressed. However, I tried it out again on Gamepass and loving it. It took playing for a couple hours to get into it and really appreciate all the interesting gameplay mechanics that open up as you play.
Haha, it was the same for me, was very hyped and played the demo, and i didn't like it much.
Then i played it also on game pass, and after 3-5 hours it just "clicked" and since then i LOVE this Game!
I can say...it's a Masterpiece
40 fps team hands up!
Best of both worlds!
Finished the plat on this a few days ago and it was phenomenal. Really looking forward to both the planned DLC and whatever this studio does next. A definite must play for any fans of the genre.
You're absolutely right, it is truely Phenomenal!!
Just got the platinum trophy a few days ago, and I gotta say this might just be one of the best games I've ever played; I enjoyed it immensely, a solid 9/10 imo. Souls fans are eating good rn.
So turns out you CAN make a beautiful soulslike game, that works great on every console since day one without dozens of patches... interesting
I've only been playing on pc and I have to say, this game runs absolutely beautifully. it's so refreshing to have a well running game at launch.
Every new game now should have a 40fps mode on console
40fps 😂😂 console really sucks
I used the 40 fps mode and didn’t really notice any issues. It felt very smooth and if there was frame pacing issues I just don’t notice it as I’m playing. It felt great and looked great
With vrr its not very noticeable.
40fps steam deck mode lol.
Agreed, on my XSX using VRR it felt butter smooth.
The PC version is an absolute joy. It runs like a dream, even on the Steam Deck at 720p/40fps on Medium settings.
Well there you go AAA Western devs it is possible to release a game that is feature compete, runs very well and looks really nice. All while providing a quality game with lost of depth and variety. This is how all AAA games should be on release day but more and more we are seeing games that are released years before they are ready and it is nothing short of robbery.
This guy's proved that it is possible to optimize unreal engine games. The Pc version is also pristine.
I feel like the reason the game has frame pacing much like bloodborne is that it's running adaptive vsync - which cuts the input latency in half compare to vsync at 30 fps, and for a game like this that needs quick button input it's understandable
I'm on NG+ and i play it on performance mode.
It's flawless ❤
Ι finished the game yesterday, it's truly a great game. Maybe a bit too hard in some areas but still very fun to play It looks great too. Definitley recommended to soulsborne fans The optimization here from the devs is great in all machines, really good job from them!
Not sure if it's mentioned, but two things I've noticed.
I had to turn off vrr on xsx because the game flickers nonstop with it enabled. And...
In the game options, hdr off means it's actually ON. So if you're wondering why it looks dim and washed out on your hdr display, that's why.
Can't believe they emulated Fromsoftware down to the frame pacing issues! Seriously, this is a polished and honestly classy release. Well done!
I was hoping Tom would review this, as he looks quite like the games protagonist! Nice review
Damn, that's some dedication. They even included the frame-pacing issues at 30 fps that Bloodborne is famous for.
One of the most polished games this year. Which sadly is a rarity and not a norm. Great work by NEOWIZ
I’m a DS1 purist, this game has been incredible so far, really stands on its own
I feel
One of the best optimized game that came this year. Plus its on gamepass😂
100% fact. Not one of the best tho..its THE BEST. And after more patches come out it will run even better
@@gunstreets2944 surely it will, this game singlehandely removed all my boredom after spending like 2 weeks on starfield. I cant love that game but lies of p ,man o man
My first souls-like (thanks to gamepass Series X). After the initial pain (like dying 30 time to early bosses), once you start upgrading and getting good, the game found its charm. I like the aesthetics, the game performance run smooth, the story is decent, gameplay very good, and bit too linear.
100% THIS!!
You nailed it! 😉
7 hours in and I'm loving this game. Bloodborne is one of my favorite games of all time and this game kind of makes me feel like I'm playing a Bloodborne sequel in a different setting😎
Indy devs actually optimizing how it shouls be. On the other hand we have AAA devs releasing halfe done games, and saying that well made games are "anomalies".
love all these options on console. played most of the game and its a gem. Runs completely smooth with TONS of resources to spare on my PC at 1440p 120fps using R7 5800x, RTX 3080 12GB, 32GB DDR4 3200MHZ CL16. Nothing but good things to say about performance and gameplay alike. Amazing job by the Devs👍
I love these videos but I'm also so happy I almost never notice any of this stuff when I'm playing.
How did the publisher/dev go from Bless and Bless Unleashed to Lies of P? Amazing game can't believe they pulled it off
Not sure but in performance mod on PS5 looks like there is some artifacts around hands (for example) from image reconstruction
I knew I was going to love Lies of P from the first time I saw it. Felt the same way the first time I saw Bloodborne. Awesome game. Awesome year in gaming.
40 FPS + VRR is the way to go
Series X has some flickering issues when using VRR. The fix was to make sure FreeSync is enabled and then change the settings in my TV from "Wide" to "High". That completely got rid of the flickering.
I love the game. It’s easily one of the best Souls-likes out there if not THE best.
how would it compare against Nioh games?
@@JaimeIsJaime Similar I guess in gameplay and everything but it’s much closer to Bloodborne in terms of look and themes
40 fps is best mode in my opinion. You get all visual effects, and only drops resolution slightly
I'm able to play this game in upscaled 4k using fsr, at 60fps on low settings using my rx480 and fx8370... I've not even been able to play recent games at all, let alone with good settings. Crazy good optimisation.
Why? Play high setting 1080p
I beat it on PC and with a 3080 I got rocksolid 165FPS at 1440p Ultra DLSS Quality and my GPU wasn't even sweating.
@@davidandrew6855 exactly, I am playing on Series S and I was like - wtf, how 😆 The same with Starfield, Cyberpunk, The Witcher. I guess some devs are a bit lazy.
Game runs like a dream on my pc. 1080p all settings to best. strix 980 ti cranking at a steady 1507 mhz. Looks and plays amazing. 980ti is still pretty bangin' in 2024. If you don't care about raytracing and play at 1080p your golden.
Lol I know its not the same thing, but I remember the days when less fog went to the more powerful console. Fog was used to hide the lack of processing power. Turok is a good example.
Lower the brightness on Performance mode for the deep black shading
Played it through twice on Series X and performance mode was flawless, plus being free on game pass was a big bonus
@WesOtsutsuki920or just also have a PS5. Mines been turned off mostly since the FF16 demo failed to capture my attention plus the performance was really bad. But maybe Spider-man 2 will get it rolling again.
@WesOtsutsuki920on top of which Spider-Man 2 isn't out yet and damn sure won't be on PS plus when it comes out. So using that to argue against Gamepass is just dumb
@WesOtsutsuki920someone is salty, damn.
@WesOtsutsuki920 just stop
@WesOtsutsuki920 superhero games are boring trash. Enjoy your boring single player, cinematic "games."
I got a series X to play third party games on the best console, not exclusives.
Would be interesting to see you guys analyzing the MacOS port of Lies of P, it's one of the first in the upcoming "wave" (if we can even call it that) of AAA games coming to Apple platform.
AA studio puting a lot of big AAA juggernaughts to shame with how well they optimised the game and how many options are there.
The fact that they have an uneven 30fps mode is hilarious. True respect for the format.
Awesome example of a game made with series S in mind
What’s going on with DF constantly omitting the PC versions of new games now? Still haven’t see an Armored Core 6 PC tech review. Used to be that DF would include all the consoles plus PC in the initial tech review. Now we are lucky if we even get a separate PC tech review at all.
Finally, I was waiting for this game on DF. Now we also need a PC analysis.
I accept to lose most things on the name of performance.
Shadow quality? Take it away, I am scared of the dark
Resolution? I can play on a smaller monitor and pretend I can't see the difference
But at 9:32 in the video I can see that performance mode removes the waifu...
Or maybe it will get Sony to make an official Bloodborne 2 now - well done Neo Wiz from South Korea!
There's a bit of pop-in on the Series X and frame pacing issues in performance mode too.
I was hoping they would touch on the HDR problems. It currently looks better in SDR than in HDR. Would have liked to see that addressed
I also ended up turning off HDR. It seemed like it just washed the image out.
@@bauul. yeah it's a shame too because proper HDR would seriously elevate the lighting and SSR's in this game. Which are good, but HDR would make it pop. Thankfully SDR is actually pretty well done in this game. Definitely doesn't look bad
I play on XSX using hfr mode 40fps/120 Hz . For me is the best choice
Love to see more games support 40fps mode on 120hrz displays
I rather see them focus on making 60fps. I have a 2021 TV and it doesn’t have 120hz. Many people don’t have TVs that support 120hz.
I agree, I really wish we would see a lot more games provide 40fps modes
@@wertywerrtyson5529you should really get one
@@wertywerrtyson5529what? The games that offer this already DO have a 60 fps mode. Your comment makes no sense “I don’t have a 120hz tv, so that means NO ONE should benefit from one” like bruh what?
@@tehCostHD I mean they should focus on making a good 60hz experience rather than focusing their resourcing on something only a minority of people can enjoy. If they do offer a good 60hz mode than of course it doesn’t hurt to also have a 40hz mode. I’m just afraid developers will forget about 60 and just target 30 and 40 fps.
Game of the year for me. I’d buy a sequel in less time it takes to time a perfect guard on here
Looks pretty cool! I've been using the Otaku switch for a couple years now. It seems fine too. I like that it's completely mechanical and just simple.
I am glad to see there is finally a developer who knowns how to properly implement a high framerate mode. I didnt get the game at release because the framerate in the demo was not 100% stable, but after watching this video, i will get it at full price to support the developers.
I wish other studios would do the same thing... Most of the time the high framerate is just a name. Maybe its time to get another option : "Super high framerate mode" which guaranty 60 fps without frame pacing issue with even lower graphics setting. I bet it would be popular.
Depending on your rig the framerate is not 100% stable either. I played with an i5 12400 and a gtx 1660 and still got the occasional stutter but overall a very smooth experience like 99% of the time, same as the demo pretty much.
VRR doesn't work on this game for series X. With VRR enabled, you get some strange flickers in series X
It's more BloodBorne and Sekrio than it is Dark Souls.
You do realize Bloodborne is built opon the dark souls formula right? I love it when yall mention bloodborne as if its something different from the dark souls blue print. And on top of that..its made by the same developer as Dark souls
@gunstreets2944
Yet the art style and direction of Lies Of P is clealry inspired by BloodBorne with the combat being closer to Sekiro and BloodBorne than it is Dark Souls.
No one who has played Lies Of P has thought, you know what this reminds me of, Dark Souls.
I’m surprised the PC version has seemingly no issues. It even runs beyond 60 fps, though the 30 fps cloth physics are still there.
Great game, finished it few days ago and now eagerly waiting for the DLC.
I have had exactly same flickering issue but my issue was flickering 1 or 2 Times per hour. I turn off hdr and hdr 10 in my xbox Series x and that issue is solved thank you so much for your info
I really hope you can take a look at the MacOS version. I would like to listen your take on it. Thanks!
Shocked no PC coverage. Game runs great on PC even with Denuvo.
I was shocked how good 40fps works on my TV. I thought it was 60, since there was no description how this higher frame rate mode works in quality mode. Game looks and feels great. Hope for DLC and def. will buy next installments.
Pretty hard to tell the difference as analog gamepad sticks are inherent with massive input lag.
1080p and 60fps? Absolutely worth it, it should be how all games are at minimum
I'm blown away that this game managed to come out of nowhere and stand toe-to-toe with other major releases in one of the most stacked release windows we've ever seen. I'm currently still knee-deep in Armored Core 6 and Phantom Liberty, but Lies of P will most definitely get some time out of me before the year's out.
Just gotta get through Spider-Man 2 and Alan Wake 2 first, lol. What a year for great games.
Finally we got an optimized game at launch, and those details are unnoticeable when you dive into the story & game, you'll focus on progress only because the game captivates your senses.
Excellent elocution. Thank you.
What’s crazy is my 1080ti from 2017 runs this at 120fps at 2560x1440 without any hitches. The next gen hardware is selling itself short. It should be able to deliver 90fps+
I assume you are using FSR?
If this game doesn’t make BluePoint or FS collaborate on the BB remaster then idk what will! Haven’t had this much addiction for a FS game since the launch of Elden Ring but BB really does hit the spot when played at 60fps! Give me 1080p 60fps with RT and BB is another GOTY!
Wow, almost a whole 3 weeks for the breakdown. Great game for sure I can’t wait to see how Lords of the Fallen stacks up to Lies of P
it's a soulslike released for 3 separate SKUs with 3 different modes. so i guess tom had to play at least the first few hours of the game 9 times. it get's tiring at that point. while i love the game, i don't envy this particular breakdown assignment for sure!
The first Lord's of the Fallen was great. As much as people hated on it. The hand gauntlet was a neat addition to it.
