  • This week I am unboxing and introducing everyone to another denizen of Madagascar, and in my opinion one the most amazing looking lizards, Uroplatus pietschmanni, the Cork Bark Leaftail Gecko. If you thought the Mossy LTGs were hard to see, this species ability to remain unseen will put the most skilled sniper to shame!

Great looking gecko. So cute. From what I've read (according to Dr. Fran Baines), specifically in the Reptile Lighting Facebook group, almost all moonlight lighting is disruptive to reptiles. Disappointing, I know, since we keep quite a few nocturnal species of reptiles and would love to be able to view them more easily in their enclosures. But, ultimately their well being is most important. Love the videos! 🦎🐢👍

Great point, thank you. My familiarity with Dr. Baines work is probably what had that little voice in my head telling me moonlighting is cool, but may not be right for the animals within.

Like the video, that guy would be hard to spot unless he was moving when on cork or wood. The enclosure is cool I love those type of enclosures. Will be good to see his tail when it grows back.

Thank you. From what I have seen from other keepers, the grow-back process is about a 3 month endeavor. So when it appears to be done, I will definitely update.

I had one about 29 years ago and it used to live in a 30liter UK fishtank with a heat lamp at 1 end. a blue tailed skink and a green anole..feed a diet of mealworms and crickets but it rarely was active in the days purely nocturnal.. it escaped once and buy the next day it was back under hes cork bark in the tank it's cold here in the winter. I wish I knew any for sale in the UK? I'd defo try breeding them as iv 2 exo terra 45x65s spare.. I'd love to know more about them as back then there was no calcium, d3 . Supplements Ect ect.. the only advice you could find on the cork bark geckos was non existent..

Nice. I've never away from a lot of gecko because of them being nocturnal. I have a tank of tree frogs and all anyone see are 3 lumps on the glass. Boring.

My wife watches some show on Netflix, the premise is if it doesn't bring you joy, get rid of it. So if you are not happy with your frogs, why not find someone interested in them, sell them and invest in a critter that you find more appealing? Now if that is not a possibility, let me suggest changing their light cycles. My timer give the entire jungle corner 9 hours of daylight. So long before bedtime, while my room lights are still on, these guys begin to comeout anyway. That gives me a few hours of overlapping time to watch these guys with out the Need for flashlights. The same is tru for the mornings before they turn on. Even with my bedroom lights and TV on, the Mossy frogs are calling away and the Geckos are rummaing around their enclosures driving my cat crazy. So either get rid of 'em or change up the environment, either way, you'll be happier.
