I don't fully agree with the idea you never gain anything. Its true that every activity or purchases requires us to trade one resource for another be it time, money, space or another opportunity. However if you look at the outcomes of the trades in terms of your development as a person you absolutely can gain. The person you are now can only exist because of the past trade offs and decisions you made. There are probably dozens of choices that if changed would have resulted in a very different person today.
I would be carful with the houseki no kuni example most of the things Phos traded where not by choice but where forced upon them as part of a plan to lead them down a very specific dark path. Plus Phos wasn't exactly happy to begin with. well that's my ramblings anyway.

Be mindful of your limitations. Don't let anyone make you exceed them.
They will not add anything more to you. At best it is a trade.
I have thought a lot about the reason this incoming wave of artificial intelligence is such a big obsession in the tech world right now and I think it is because it has infinite potential. AI is not constrained to biology and neural networks can be configured for any task. The entirety of technological development of all history has lead up to this moment and the allure is irresistible to some people because it promises freedom from limitation. Tools and machines were always invented with the intention that they would extend onto humanity, so the question is, will there really be net-gain when the AI surpasses the human brain?
