Nice casting Charles. I wish we could say they were made here. All of the rules and regulations make it almost impossible. The machining and tolerances look pretty good. I think that you could make decent cylinder heads out of these Charles. Thanks for sharing. Take care, Ed.
Nice to see that they improved in the areas that really needed improvement. Great review! I can't wait to see what you can get out of a head that has ample thickness in the areas that matter.
Casting tech has greatly improved in the last 20 years not to mention last 70 years. In a limited market for a head like this, design and quality have to be top notch. These are not the typical Chinese product made to dump on the American market. They are engineered and managed by folks other than the Chinese. China can produce and manufacture quality products if you hold their backs to the wall. Read my other reply posted as to why these are not cast in the United States.
I've always heard these heads weren't as good as the new Zealand heads. Please do a comparison of the stock flows and modified flows. You do awesome work! Thanks for sharing!
I bought a pair of Speed Master cast iron 4V Cleveland heads for a project that i have to do. Flowed them against a standard Ford 4V. Both are closed chamber heads. China for the win, by about 4cfm average. That said, the quality of the casting appears excellent, with equal or more metal everywhere than the original head. No porosity, excellent finish on the machining, excellent valve seats, and guides out of the box, for a factory cast iron head. There are a couple of things that I'm not to happy about, like they have increased the throat area to almost 90% which I don't like. Doesn't give me room to work my ideas. I like your honest assessment. It doesn't matter which country you live in, national pride is important, but it's ignorant to think that your country is always the best. A smart person takes the best of everything, and makes it better. Looking forward to seeing how these develop. Regards Greg
Charles, thanks for all the work on the mopar heads. Spoke with Rob on forabodiesonly, he said I should reach out to you. I have a set of stock RHS X magnum type heads, as well as stock edlebrock magnum style aluminun heads that you might be interested in playing with.
....no...all of this machining is done in China...I just received a pair...identical in every way as Charle's head....directly from China... 130 Euro a piece....well packaged.....greetz from Germany....
Speedmaster, Promaxx, Jegs, all have their own version of what appears to be the same casting. Engine Quest however are the only one's who sell it with the LA intake bolt holes.
Still no way in hell I'd buy them but it's good to see they're putting out a better product. So many people learned the hard way that too good to be true is too good to be true from Chinese heads.
Until I go through... It is curved so the sonic has a problem with it. The back has a casting rib which makes the Helgeson E and I bar useless unless ground out.
It’s not about the quality. It’s about the human rights abuses which don’t matter to the greed of wanting all of the money and not paying American Labor. Buy local.
The problem is you can’t buy local. The EPA has made it impossible for anyone to run a foundry in the United States unless you are a government contactor casting parts for the DOD. And it is truly not a case of being cheap, it’s become impossible to cast parts cost effectively because of the environmental Constraints. In a 30 mile radius of where I live, we have lost all foundries but one.
I am not entirely opposed to importing things, but only where people make a decent wage and don't turn the environment into a cancer village. One thing I like about working with VWs is that you can still get auto parts from all over western Europe. Besides, if we all just "Bought AMerican" we wouldn't have cars that were decent competition to the Toyota Corolla. We'd be stuck with the equivalent of more Pintos and Vegas.
Hey Charles, Tim here, well those chambers are a bit horrid, nice that the plug is biased twds the exh valve, but the chamber shape isnt all that great......for a build of 400 hp, ok, it'll work, but its a limiting factor......i'm sure you know.....chamber shape is VERY important......during overlap, we get the first pull of fresh charge in, the chamber ur workin with, wont allow a strong first pull....for a mild build, i'd be fine.....i've often wondered about GM manufacturers, and their chamber, my Pontiac #48's , have an AWFULL chamber, no plug bias, yet, one can make 400 hp all day.......just sayin.....dont know what power ur customer is expecting, but besides obvious issues, the chamber will NOT pull very strong during overlap......just not shaped right, you cud grind on it, get better shape, at the expense of compression, i'll take less comp, if we get a better ovelap period....and make a MORE efficient 400 hp dude.......(shud end up with better VE) just thoughts, sorry if i bug you, yesterdays chat was AWESOME....and i shud shut up, as i can be quite the IDIOT.......just my thoughts Charles, PEACE to you sir!!
You do realize I was a teacher for 16+ years so please use proper sentance structure and spelling. I am not making fun, it makes a difference how people perceive you. I do not think you are an idiot, you make good points about the chamber. You are right, but....what if I put a killer high velocity exhaust port in it?

Charles thanks again for your detailed examination of the Chyna eq head, now the fun begins.
The amount of grinding they need is insane!
Really good seeing the data laid out like that. Thanks Charlie. This is going to be interesting!

I agree on the smaller throat! I forgot to mention this casting has only one inclusion I have seen so far where the stock Magnum was peppered. Thanks

I will check with EQ/ aa midwest but I think the seats and guides are done in the USA. At least that is the impression I got from previous research.

Im interested to see what they flow compared to the old enginequest, this is the only aftermarket head we can run in Imca racing.
Stay tuned
Thank God we have you on these? The casting in the combustion chambers is horrible.
They require a stupid amount of grinding. Thanks

There are people that take pride in their work all over the world. And sadly the opposite is true too.
You are right.
Those look like Odessa/Clearwater china castings. 🤔

Intersting. Thanks
That vane on the short side probably speeds up the flow to the right of it.
I thnik you are right, I think it moves the flow to the cylinder wall of the ssr.
It looks like it's ready for a better guide with that real estate in that area
Mill it out and install a thick walled bronze. I really need a mill.
