  • Snowmobiling conditions were ideal in Eustis 🏔 Maine 🌲 earlier this week after the snowstorm ❄️ last Saturday. I went out at around 4:30 PM Monday afternoon, March 14, 2022 for a ride to the Kibby Mountain Range wind towers with a GoPro camera on my head to capture these great riding conditions on a nice sunny day, taking my sled across fresh snow to access the Interconnected Trail System (ITS) maintained beautifully by the groomers from the Arnold Trail Snowmobile Club, ATSC, Maine's largest snowmobile club.
🧭🗺 To be able to see exactly where you are on a map at any point during my ride on the ITS trails, I used GPS data from the GoPro to show my position in real time. I also show the elevation, distance travelled, compass heading, current time, and speed in mph and kph, all in real time using a program called Telemetry Overlay (99 🦌s). I tried to configure the gauges so they are out of the way but still useful.
⏩ Move around to any point in the video as you watch the dot 🔴 move along the map, or choose a place based on elevation.⏪ If you'd like a version of this video without gauges, let me know.
When I arrive at the wind towers, I have a brief look around. Such a beautiful day at that point with a clear blue sky. Then I return on a different route and go all the way down onto Flagstaff Lake 🏞 via the Hyde (school) Trail and see the sunset 🌄 there. I go to Pines Market for gas ⛽️ and then home via headlight.
I hope you enjoy the beautiful winter scenery and the ride in great conditions! ☺️

Thanks for another great ride. Awesome view to the south when first coming down off Kibby around 44:00-45:00 👍🏻

I like how the map inset is tracking your location as the video goes along. This looks like fun!

My hope is that people can use my rides as reference videos to see what the trail looks like in reality anywhere along the way by sliding the video progress to where they’d like based on the position of the red dot 🔴 along the track on the map 🗺 ☺️

Just saying that I would have totally missed the trail leading up to the mountain at 32:32 like you did!

@@Kevin207Photography I haven't been up there this year but, I have heard the trail leading up to the towers is not open.

@@johns9694 yes there is a lot of logging going on in that area so Weyerhauser chose not to open up the trails to the towers. Hopefully next year!

How is it that you can have the map going on this and the speed? I am curious

I bought a piece of software called TELEMETRY OVERLAY for $99 a few years ago. It allows you to capture the GPS data from many devices you might make recordings from: GoPro cameras, drones, and an increasing number of devices. I think it is $50 more now. Completely customizable gauges. I just updated it for free today for a new snowmobile video I did yesterday! They have a trial version you can try out.

@@Kevin207Photography thanks for the reply and info! So this software knows the local trail systems somehow? The with the GPS coordinates it populates where you were on the trail through your ride? If that is correct it seems like a great software!

@@upthewayproductions it puts your path on a map, not knowing anything about trail systems. The data from the GPS capturing device (GoPro, DJI drone, and others) is plotted on the map and stays in synch with the video. You can even choose standard map, satellite map, or hybrid map like Google Maps or the Apple Maps app.
