    Hey guys! Just a few little things! Bath and body crafters use weight measurements, not volume because volume is incredibly imprecise. The 64 ounces was definitely in weight and not fluid. Xanthan Gum is not oil soluble, I couldn't have mixed it with the fragrance oil first. I followed the instructions to the letter, this was not user error. XD

    • @elliotwhitehouse3036
      @elliotwhitehouse3036 Год назад +32

      Im suprised they opted for Xantham gum as its known for being such a pain with incoporating and usually has to be done first before any further process is done. The seperation could be from the stick blender as the surfactants cant always handle high shear mixing which causes separating and the chain of molecules to seperate and not be able to re join. My advice would be to add some glycerin and hydrate the xanthan gum in the glycerin first before adding it to the main mix as once it touches water it becomes instantly hydrated and almost impossible to mix in.

    • @sjean2166
      @sjean2166 Год назад +15

      If you put the xanthan gum into an oil first, it will disperse but not dissolve. When you then mix that oil-xanthan mixture to the water/bodywash, it will blend in more smoothly and not form those clumps.

    • @tommyali5790
      @tommyali5790 Год назад +3

      You should mix the Xanthan gum in vegetable glycerin first. That is the only way it will dissolve and spread evenly.

      it blows my mind that resin crafting makes you measure in volume and not weight maybe i should switch to soap lol i miss weight measurements

    • @briannahudson6329
      @briannahudson6329 5 месяцев назад

      But 64 fl Oz is half a gallon and they gave you a gallon of body wash. So maybe they wanted you to measure that by volume and the rest by weight since you could only make 2 batches so half the base would make sense. But I agree with you going by weight is far more reliable and accurate than by volume.

    I love how you still show the products even if they don't turn out how you expect, it gives others confidence to trust it's not a human error, that makes it curdle, rice, seperate or get glycerine rivers.

  • @Juni_for_short

    I can't say as I've made soap with it but as a coeliac I use xanthum gum and other painful to mix ingredients in baking. I will say using a whisk would actually work a lot better than the little immersion mixer. You need a really small amount of liquid and a fair amount of force to break down the clumpy texture especially xanthum gum wants to form into. A small whisk works better as its not about mixing it into a smooth runny mixture but more a thick almost dough like paste that you can thin down and incorporate into the mixture. There really just isn't enough power in those little mixers to do that as well as the gaps in the "whisk" head veing too small and working basically just like a stick and all the product gathering on it like you saw in the video. Moreover, as soon as you add even a little too much liquid the clumps will just move around rather the thinner mixture rather than being broken apart by the forces of the thicker mixture. It sounds really counter intuitive but they were actually right to specify a small whisk and a small amount of liquid, I've done it many many times with xanthum gum and cornstarch both of which notoriously like to form non-newtonian fluids which is actually why the method works. Think of cornstarch slime when you push against it it hardens but when you let it sit it becomes fluid again and incorporates; as you push the clumps into the mixture the force breaks them apart and as it settles they incorporate. Same as making a slurry for sauces and gravies for all the non-bakers out there.
    Edit to say I do absolutely adore your videos and this is in no way meant to be a jab or jibe just a possible solution to that problem.

      Yes! As a baker I was thinking the same thing. The point of no return was when too much body wash was added before fully mixing the xanthan in. Reminds me of way too many cornstarch clump fails 😅

    You shoud've used a whisk! Not a stick blender, not a milk frother! The stick blender caused that its so runny, because for something to become slimy and thick, it have to be able to generate long chained molekules and by using a stick blender you are breaking those long chains apart! That's why you were able to get a smooth consistency when using just the yellow stick in the smaller container! Also it's way to thick and again long chained for you to be able to use a milk frother (also you could risk harming the motor inside the frother, because the slime was way too little viskos for the frother, because it was build for very viskos thing (e.g. milk). Hope this helps for the future! Sorry for my bad english.

After watching day 3 I had to go watch the others I had missed! Many of their kits are way too high price din my opinion with makers having no way to make a profit. This kit especially! I dont see too many folks paying that much, and if they did, I can only imagine their frustration after making it according to the directions and no stick blender! The second go around was definitely much better. If not for you doing this, most folks likely wouldnt have figured it out and spent all that money to dump the products in the garbage calling it a total failure, emailing the company!

      Xanthan Gum is not oil soluble. It is water soluble. It also should not be mixed with a warm/hot liquid because that will increase the likelihood of clumping which are called fisheyes in manufacturing. The oil used with Xanthan gum works to prevent clumping as it separates the individual Xanthan gum granules before the water is added to activate it.

    Xanthan gum in soap is not a good idea. That stuff takes ages to wash away. I love the idea of slime bubble bath. But not with xanthan gum. As soon as it touches liquid it will clump. You need to already be mixing it before you add any liquid to it. When I use it for baking I always mix it in with dry first before letting any liquid touch it.

    Yikes, those instructions were bogus. Xanthan gum is best prehydrated in glycerin, and no need to heat it. Whisk it together to make a slurry, let it sit for about 5 minutes, add your water phase to the slurry a little bit at a time, and stir thoroughly between each addition (gently, try not to create too many bubbles, because once the formula starts to gel, those bubbles will get stubborn, and they'll add volume and keep your formula from fitting into the packaging). Stir the mixture occasionally over the next 10min to 1hr or so, till any "fish eyes" (visible clear lumps) disappear. If there are still lumps, just leave it to sit overnight and it'll stir smooth easily in the morning. And that wasn't enough xanthan gum to create a solid, unfortunately. I use xanthan gum soft at 0.8% for a fairly thin gel cleanser. For slime, I'd start with a small test batch using 5% xanthan gum.
    Note - you *can* predisperse xanthan gum in oil, including fragrance oil. It will help reduce clumping. But prehydrating in glycerin is more effective, IMO.

    the problem is they gave you YELLOW for a bubble bath when the scent says green lime mint was it the purple thoughi love purple but that scent could go green too but BLUE would be better as you said
    and its soooo expensive to do yourself & the instructions are just wrong off by 12 oz & saying to mix gently when it requires a stick blender not everyone has & isn't included

    Why would the yellow color be problematic? Also, hope you and your family are safe in all the Texas storms!

      I think because it turns the water a light yellow color…like urine.

    I thought neons were not approved for bath bombs, bubble bath - anything not a straight rinse-off.

    I’d call it a bubble bath snot based on the yellow one’s texture. Slime is just a buzzword for their marketing I think.

    I just wish they chose better colors. The bright purple and bright neon yellow is just atrocious. Not colors I’d ever put in my bathroom, or give to kids. But I love the 12 days of soapmas!

    Xanthan gum in soap?! NO MAAAAAAMMM!! Speaking from glutenfree baking experience it takes AGES, and lots of water to wash off Xanthan gum leftovers... so adding it to soap seems counter productive to me...

      I get that it would be an easy way to make it gummy/slimy, but I’m with you. Wouldn’t you have to blend it thoroughly with something eat more fluid than bubble bath anyway? Poor Katie. $120 for chunky gloop.

      @@MrsTrafford it can take about a 1:100 or up to 1:1000 ratio of xanthan gum to liquid... So yeaahh... And soap doesn't bind with it as good as water... So you add loads of XG in the soap, but need A LOT of water to wash it off hahahah

      It works when done right, it’s an ingredient in the blue land packs for body wash🙃
