Season 1, I believe, was meant for Aang to move on from the past and learn what it means to be an Avatar, that's why they didn't have him waterbend whatsoever.
If you noticed, they never called this 'Book 1: Water', it's just season 1. With a time skip happening between the end of this season and season 2, we'll probably see him waterbend at the beginning of season 2, with flashbacks to him learning, I hope.

My biggest issue with the show is just the "norm" about streaming services in general. I absolutely hate how shows on Netflix and other services are only like 8 one hour episodes. This remake should've never only received 8 episodes for 1 season. If they increased the amount of episodes for the remake, it would've flowed much better. Can you imagine how much less clunky and rushed it would've felt if there were 15 episodes? 12 would’ve even sufficed.

It dawned on me, after this episode, that the book names weren’t for Aang, but the masters he encounters along the way. Maybe this was Kataras book on learning to be a water bending master…. Next book is Toph.
Aang is the vehicle through which these people learn what they are capable of. Which actually dovetails nicely into Aang learning his own capabilities.
Each character in the story has their own hero’s journey. It’s not just Aang.

I do however hope the showrunners take some of the good criticisms that the show got and take it with them into another season to up the quality.
Regarding a potential Season 4 I have to be honest in my personal opinion they should just let Avatar Studios focus on the stuff that would take the characters we know on that journey. Loved Yue. Sokka's sense of loss felt more believable than the cartoon to me. Amber Midthunder was of my favorite supporting actors.
The Momo moment was touching to me. Way cute seeing Sokka now cuddle this little guy he considered tasting at one point.
Koizilla was amazing. Loved the last scene with Zhao (whonwas also amazing) and Iroh finishing him off, but seeing a hint of the ocean spirit claiming his body in the end.
That was so sad for Zuko too and Dallas gave a fantastic performance as he did the whole show.

I think my biggest irk with this episode as the lip service without the action or story follow through. Zuko saying the classic "you've found a master, haven't you?" without Katara finding an actual master is odd, and Iroh saying the classic "I'll unleash on you ten-fold" followed by him basically just standing there. I don't like that Zuko didn't really even get close to capturing Aang. Dropping Koh was odd, the momo fakeout death was not ok, and I'm not really a fan of the war balloon here.. But aside from that it was a good finale.

Zuko said that line cause Katara improved so fast since their first battle on episode 2. On the Iroh part I agree, for the Zuko's part he did almost captured the Avatar with the help of June. On Koh getting dropped that quick I agree, for the Momo part i think it was necessary so they have an excuse to go to the spirit oasis and for the war balloon they did a good job replicating it from the cartoon.

On first watch through koizilla was pretty underwhelming for me, but it had a lot to live up to from the original. Visually the original was almost overwhelming with the bright blue glow contrasting with the grayscale, and the way it moved and the way the waves rose up and moved with it with the blue glow flowing into the water, it really felt like an unstoppable force of nature, the ocean come to life to avenge the moon. By comparison, the live action felt like a generic kaiju beast mindlessly destroying what’s in front of it. Looking at it again though and knowing what to expect this time, I can appreciate what they were going for. Less a force of nature itself and more a force of primal rage and sorrow, a beast that’s lost itself in the face of overwhelming loss, much like the anger and sorrow Aang could have given into after all that has happened over the last hundred years. I can see what they were going for too with the whole idea of Aang becoming one with the beast and being lost forever, though it was a little clumsy to me and didn’t do much to enhance it.
Overall, I can say with confidence that I like the show! A solid 7/10 overall, both as an adaptation and as its own show, and a definite 8 or maybe even 9/10 for everything to do with Zuko and Iroh. I’m happy this exists if only for the Zuko and Iroh parts.
Thank you for giving your honest thoughts and reviews on the show, it was nice to see someone approach it with an open mind and provide both fair criticism and praise amid all the unnecessary hate. I’m curious what your thoughts are for what you want to see if we do get a second season. Will you continue to make videos to update us on (hopefully) a season 2? Also wondering what you have heard about viewership. I know one thing that matters is how many people that start a series finish it. I not only finished it and agree this final episode was great - I've also already re-watched it.

And they could have just completed the entire show. And also not worried about actors aging. Plus since I binged it so fast twice I'm still hungry for content 😅

Doing three seasons all at once would be impractical. This series is very expensive, so they wont spend more than just one series at a time. The series cost $120 million, with each episode costing $15 million. Assuming the other two series get the same amount of episodes and money spent on them, altogether the budget would come to $360 million. Thats way too much to spend on a tv show all at once. If the show flops, it will not be money well spent. Also, this series took 6 months to film. Doing two more seasons at the same time, would take another year of constant filming.

    • @uncleirohsteashop

Lol has filming 3 seasons of television back to back ever happened? That sounds like an expense not worth going forward with given how big this show is for Netflix. As we've so far seen from the data it's not flopping at the moment people are watching it.

I have to say that Azula was the weak link for me of the main cast. Azula is cold, calculated, and unlike her brother level-headed and certainly not prone to the temper tantrums displayed even as a child, it was only after losing her best friends and feeling betrayed by those closest to her that her cold blooded facade began to fall. I hope that we get true Azula in Season 2, and her bending is completely blue from the start instead of just seeing hints of it, and we see her characteristic 2 fingers bending for everything, including lightning bending.

I feel like if we do get a season 2, we’ll probably see a more cool and calculating Azula like from the original. Since they’re anticipating a time skip they may have been wanting to show how Ozai’s manipulation was affecting her here, then contrast with how being out in the world and in command of others lets her true, cold and ruthless self come out. Here she’s feeling caged and increasingly fed up with her father’s games, but when we see her next, she’ll have been free from that cage for a good while and we’ll be able to see what an affect that has on her.

I just find it kinda stupid that they never let Aang learn any waterbending, I found the entire premise of Aang potentially 'being lost forever' kinda weird (as the avatar, you should be able to break free of a spirit I'd say?) and the way they portray Azula, being a fearsome warrior rather than a cunning, intelligent and evil villain is something I don't really like. That my friend right there comes down to the directing of the actor from the directors. To give you a famous example I’ll go towards the Star Wars prequel trilogy. It’s been very well-known in the space that George Lucas is not very good at directing actors. We saw that as much in those films with Hayden Christensen for example and I don’t think Christiansen was given the service that he deserved. I’m not saying that the directors were bad here for the show but they definitely could’ve done more.
