With all respect but promoting this "platform" is really like selling "snake oil" - countless security issues - within HA and with "integrations" not to mention HACKs, and when you addressing this with examples - "developers" banning you from official forum without warrning. There is also politicaly correct bias with community so if you not following current trends you will also get banned. Deveopers started even banning russian developers:)))) Which is just crazy. And last but no least - non existing stability which has long lasting tradition and it seems that it will never end. Great video Paul, because of this I finally took the leap to HA. One thing though, you may want to note that the SD card should be removed after turning off the Pi and turning it back on to load from SSD. May be common knowledge to HA/RPi pros, but not for a noob like me.....FOUND THIS OUT THE HARD WAY :)

I may have missed this - but a silly blocker for me as a complete newbie to Raspberry Pi 4's and Home Assistant is that the SD card may need to be removed before it can boot via USB (SSD). So after you've put USB Boot via the Raspberry Imager on the SD Card, you've inserted the SD Card into the Raspberry Pi 4 and let it boot to copy the boot-up instructions to the Pi... Turn it off, take out the SD Card and the USB Boot should work.
This took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out why the SSD would not boot up Home Assistant.

This will backup your HA every few days to your google drive account automatically, keeping all updates and changes you make to HA current in case of a drive failure. Can even set it to delete the old versions so it doesn't take up all your google drive space. But i agree with all you've said and done. Again keep up the good work. 🙂

Some advise I started in Pi3 but has I have 80 zigbee devices it seems to struggle and was getting slow already. I moved this to a Small computer with a celeron processor and like rapid now. But local backups and/or manual backups is the same as no backups at all.
It's going to work for a few days then weeks from now it has been forgotten and all you have is a month old backup, and that probably equals several hours of development lost.

what I like about node red the most besides the interface is the fact that's easy to store the state of your room. So for example, my lights are rigged to remember their last state when they were turned off. That way I don't have to faff about with scenes and settings 99% of the time. Also, much easier to expose to the outside world - you don't need an amazon account for example. I'm on the fence though about exposing my server directly, still digging into security.
I'm realizing now that automations are the tip of the iceberg with node red.

Amazing Video for beginners for sure. Really enjoyed it, even I am not a HA beginner anymore :)
Step 1 to 7 and all the raspberry pi crap you can avoid ( and all the pain with it ) by just getting a Odroid N2+ with pre-installed
Homeassistant Image :) odroid UK and amerdroid US has them ( can not post link here I guess ).
I personally use in both houses Homeassistant Blue which are bascially the same just neater looking case.
Also when you first startup HA I would highly recommend to not let HA all import what it finds, especially if you have already a lot of Smart devices.
I would rather recommend doing that manually one by one from Settings > Devices/Services later and immediately start renaming the entities and devices to names
that actually make sense to you.
Otherwise you can end up with hundreds or even thousands of entities you have to rename, disable, etc. makes things easier.
Would assume a lot of beginners in your audience also would appreciate a HACS Video, without it, Home Assistant is only half as good :)

There's a design issue with USB 3 and RF wireless devices (like wireless keyboards, mice and things like zigbee). These wireless devices use a frequency of around 2.4GHz to transmit and receive data.
USB 3 sends and receives signals at 5GHz but this creates radio interference of around 2.5GHz so if the USB 3 cables or sockets are not shielded properly they will interfere with any RF wireless transmitter/receiver if they're too close. This sort of thing can also happen if you plug 2.4G transmitter directly into an unshielded USB3 socket.
This is why it's advisable to always plug those little antenna dongles into USB2 ports if you have them. If you have no choice, Moving the dongle a short distance away from the USB3 port will fix the issue (just 20cm away is usually enough) so if you only have USB3 ports, just get a short USB cable and stick the dongle on the end.
So many people have thrown away or dismissed wireless keyboards or mice as junk simply because of this widely occurring design oversight.
Nerds can Google "USB 3.0* Radio Frequency Interference Impact on 2.4 GHz Wireless Devices" if they want the full explanation.

Got my zigbee coordinator connected - reset and added a few bulbs and a sensor and I'm already pretty frustrated/angry at the whole process.
Replicating the basic "sensor makes room lights bright during day, dim at night, turn off after 5 mins no motion" rule that Hue makes easily was pretty painful. If it's going to be that hard to re-make the routines I have in there and Alexa this is not going to be for me and I'm in awe of the patience anyone has that can do this.

  • @fjrichman
    @fjrichman 2 года назад +2

Personally I'd create a second dashboard for customization, so that on the automatic dashboard all the new stuff shows up. Just because sometimes an integration updates and adds more useful information and you wouldn't know it in your regular dashboard. But that additional info will show up in the automatic dashboard.

Say you plan to use HA for 5 years. That's 60 months times $6.50 for their cloud, or $390 (assuming they will not raise the price, assuming you will quit HA after 5 years). Doesn't it make sense to spend 30 minutes to define Alexa or Google locally? (15 minutes for the video, 15 for the actual definition). I don't know of many people (none, actually) who make $780 per hour. Plus, if you define it locally you don't need to rely on the cloud and on your Internet connection anymore - one of the main goals of HA is cloud independence (BTW there's also a LocalTuya integration).

You might want other services they provide, like not having to fiddle with port forwarding ect. It's a good point though!
I know I could do this stuff, but I don't mind paying to help the Nabu Casa team running. Having them actually pay devs to work on stuff is good, especially since they've got ESPHome, ZHA and Rhasppy in house now.

This informative and educational video led me to conclude Home Assistant is still too much work. Dear Paul, do you think there is a sexier alternative to HA? An alternative which offers less tinkering and more time for life, sex and actually using the smart home rather than setting it up in a meh-bleh web interface? (I love web interfaces, please don't get me wrong, it's the ugliness and the utter lack of UX that turns me off in both HA and Hubitat web interfaces, they are ungodly and should be smitten down by our lord ) I feel that, for example, Hubitat videos you gallantly made for us are not enough, and I believe your witty and humorous elaboration on sexier and less geeky HA alternatives would be a much-anticipated blast.

For remote access you have 2 other FREE choices:
    1. With DDNS (Duckdns), for an extra layer of security i would suggest you to use a reverse proxy
    2. Setup a vpn (I used Wireguard) its probably the most secure option, but you have to turn on your Wireguard vpn on the client device anytime you want to access your HomeAssistant
(PN you could also open your port of HomeAssistant and with your public ip just access your HomeAssistant installation Thought i strongly suggest you do not go that route.)
Also for everything exposed to the internet make sure you have a strong password.

I tried HA hosted on my Windows Server and was never really stable. I am tempted to go down Pi route but I have The Home Remote which does it all. Have a look, Alexa integration is a bit weird tbh and doing custom tiles is geeky (watch their tutorial videos is geek heaven) but no host required, literally sign into integrations, add buttons to screen and done.

Hey Paul and whoever else happens to buy the case. I am not sure if they came out with a new model or if they send a different model to US but the version of the case that I got had a different look on the inside(also a cheaper fan :/) I still followed your instructions(swapping which USB ports) but nothing connected so I followed the case directions and nothing, finally I just unplugged the usb3.0 to ssd(basically the whole top) and used the connector you had me get to hook up the ssd and no more interference. I still love this case and want to use it for another project but with the ssd adapter not working great I have to go with something else lame :( the rest of the video was spot on and perfect, thanks for your videos helping guide me through the process!!!

I run HA in a VM on (one of) my UNRAID server but I still enjoyed the vid and learned a couple of things (also it reminded me to make a backup)
I personally like to have a clone of the installation as a backup to, that way you could just deploy the image and it's all setup (witch is much easier for a VM to be fair and I understand most people don't have a server ((or 3))

At long last, I installed HASSIO (or whatever they want to call it these days) many months ago and could never get past the install and start. everything was SOOOO complicated. I have it on Raspi4 sitting there not doing anything, all integrations are sort of set up but just not doing anything. Then wam bam you made this vid, so I am trying it on the Odroid XU4 as a fresh install, nb: make sure you use the correct install as there are 2, one called Core and the other is the OS. The OS is better as you seem to have more control ie: addons... here's where I hope to do a Paul Hibbert hip thrust lol. Time will tell.

In practice, for me HA only discovered 3 Televisions and 50 other devices that could not be used immediately because they did not have an integration, for a lot of these (e.g all my smart sockets) the process was considerably more complicated to even get them recognised. I’ve watched a few HA “simple” set up videos where every device immediately appears in a dashboard and I think it’s misleading.

Late to the party but here's a tip. You can also setup a VPN on a device in your home to login to your local network from outside. From that moment your local IP address are reachable from your phone. I've setup a shortcut on my iPhone to open the VPN connection when I use the Home Assistant app and voila I can reach my home remotely.

Great video (and entertaining as usual 😁). just a few comments (related mostly to HA).
First thing, first, you convinced me to try the Home Assistant (after you convinced me in the past it is a lot of tinkering and maybe not worth it).
So bite the bullet ordered an SSD, grabbed a PI3 that I have laying around and 4 hours later:
    - managed to finally boot from USB on my RPI3 (btw the RPI imager utility boot from usb does not work for PI3, there is a bit of good ol' linux cmd line typing)
    - created account & waited 20 minutes & voila! all my smart devices in one place ... 'but wait' (to quote you)
    - dashboard showing only 4 devices (chromcasts actually) - one NvidiaTV, one chromecast, one google nest mini, one TV (android)
None of the smart devices: two Nest thermostats, three temperature sensors (WIFI), Samsung smart washer (WIFI), Broadlink bridge & switches (also WIFI), smart plugs (WIFI).
Was too late last night to check if I missed something, but I start to remember your frustration with the HA. Also the dashboard is very bland (I'll try the themes later maybe).
I see now that you have a more recent tutorial for HA, hopefully that will show me where I went wrong.
Once again, thank you for all these great videos.

My wife thanks you Paul for giving me another project to work on :). I do have a quick question that you or someone else may be able to answer: I am after a high amperage safe smart plug that will work with Home Assistant and the ConBee II stick and in the UK format 240v. Has to be capable of running a heater (say 2kw) and, preferably, has power monitoring included. Everything I have seen for Zigbee sound good until you see the disclaimer regarding high current devices. I would prefer not to burn the house down this winter but find that this sort of plug with a temp sensor could save a pretty penny this winter, especially now that UK electricity is reaching for the stars!
