@Dorian Ferguson A bit of an obtuse point Dorian. It "overperforms" in the high altitude area that literally nobody uses because the maps are FAR too small for top tiers. At low altitude, it's underperforming by something like 20% off its IRL counterpart.
@@Reddsoldier Wouldn't make that much of a difference I think. It's just a plane that doesn't fit the game, a bomber hunter when there's no bombers to hunt
Snape that’s not really much of a point. The F-4 phantom was designed as an all weather interceptor and ground attacker as well, but in war thunder we see it mainly in the role of being a fighter.
they're super slow dude, dont launch them at 2km at near supersonic speeds and expect it to hit, it won't, they HAVE to be used either closer or on slow targets.
The lightning was the only aircaft ever to be able to zoom climb and intercept a U2 - and proceed to go higher than it. in 1984 a lightning also intercepted Concorde in tail chase - something that all other NATO fighters failed to do at the time, including F15.

it wasnt a dogfighter, it was a fighter interceptor for our quick reaction alert. get into the sky as fast as possible and as high as possible, to fire missles at russian bombers. :) during test excercises it managed to weapon lock concorde, and U2. so its not all doom and gloom.
you have to relise what the lightning was designed for , it was nota dog fighter but a intercepter . designed to get to high lvl and intercept russian bombers over the north sea .
The reason why the Lighting sucks in Wt is the same reasons why RB EC failed, people are just not patient enough to play it properly are you seriously surprised that a plane made to intercept and engage at high altitudes sucks at low altitudes? you can say that it still sucks on high altitude combat, and yeah of course, if most rb maps it fights are the size of a peanut, you just simply don't have the space to engage the enemy and disengage using your Superior speed and acceleration to lose the foe and relocate to re engage, an EC map or even maybe the british channel map wouldn't be big enough for these Craft and given how fast they can fly forget hyping planes like the Tomcat or any Future high altitude interceptor in this game, because the only planes that will always fit the meta are the ones that are decent enough at low altitude battles as the playerbase push for shorter and faster matches
Elinzar Not to mention the Lightning was made to intercept nuclear bombers, not fighters. Everyone overhyped the hell out of it. It’s very good at doing its job, but it can’t do its job in War Thunder.
@@turkeyboy5543 It was a well respected plane in its day, like alot on here though, its getting bad press because it's not a low altitude dog fighter that everyone wants.
The Lightning was the only plane able to catch the U-2 Spyplane. So it climbes like hell. This is a citation from Wikipedia: In 1984, during a NATO exercise, Flt Lt Mike Hale intercepted a U-2 at a height which they had previously considered safe (thought to be 66,000 feet (20,000 m)). Records show that Hale also climbed to 88,000 ft (27,000 m) in his Lightning F.3 XR749. This was not sustained level flight but a ballistic climb, in which the pilot takes the aircraft to top speed and then puts the aircraft into a climb, exchanging speed for altitude. Hale also participated in time-to-height and acceleration trials against Lockheed F-104 Starfighters from Aalborg. He reports that the Lightnings won all races easily with the exception of the low-level supersonic acceleration, which was a "dead heat".[78] Lightning pilot and Chief Ex.
Ever heard of the lightning that climbed to 88,000 feet to practice an attack on a U2, was faster then said U2, and overtook Concorde when the other interceptors in the challenge couldn’t? All the same pilot to
In alot of lightning articles. They said the best climb technique will be 25-35 deg. using ur speed to climb. anything more than 45 actually slows u down. With the old mentioned techique. U can climb at 50 000 ft per minute.
The radar merely "slaves" the seeker head. It isn't really an IRCM alternative. But it sure does make for some nice shots on prop climbers or weird angle shots
I think the unequal afterburn seen behind the plane is due to the fact that the engines are not directly on top of each other, but staggered. So one has longer to the exhaust than the other.
War Thunder as a concept is amazing , with truly skilled developers, however the execution of that concept is done horribly wrong. They will add wonderful vehicles but the game play mechanics, the maps and objectives are utter garbage.
This game still has many of the same problems it did 4-5 years ago; ground forces meta has been to bum-rush and spawn camp for waaaaaaaay too long, and the BR compression is horrendous in most game modes. But as long as people still buy Premium they don't care.
Reality of the Lightning was to be launched from dispersal airfields at very short notice, short take off and exceptionally rapid climb rate (one held as a record for decades). The high speed was also used to intercept high flying Soviet Bombers. They would aim to shoot them down with guns and missiles while allowing the V Bombers to head to the USSR to drop their nuclear payload. The Lightning's were later bolsted by the Phantom 2 and Tornado in their latter years. However the Lightning still played a role in quick reaction interception until nearly the end of the cold war with a operational history of being a proven and effective asset from its appearance just after WW2 in the 50s thru it's career until just a few years before the gulf war! I believe the RAF retired them in 88. Sleek, manoeuvrable, capable and ridiculously quick. (It's near vertical take off angle is something to behold) it was known for feeling like you were riding a rocket, although given the fact that it's engines were 2 (used normally to power bombers (Vickers valiant) and Airliners (dehavilland comet)) mounted on top of each other with afterburners, a set of wings a gun and some nutter up front trying to fly the maniac! They were highly agile and aerobatic, one of the very few planes capable of interception of U2s and the SR71 - which was HIGHLY classified at the time and occured over the North sea and also capable of Mach 2+ and yes it could easily out pace concorde... Overall a magical plane and awesome bit of engineering.
Leandis Floyd or it’s meant to intercept Russia’s nuclear bombers and goals fast as “lightning” it wasn’t meant to engage or fighters, it’s an interceptor
i think they muddled the afterburner, here's why: The lightning's top engine is further back than the bottom, so the afterburner on the top should be longer and the bottom shorter, but its the opposite.
This aircraft was designed to get as high as possible as fast as possible to launch its missiles against incoming bombers. Nothing else. It was essentially a missile for carrying and launching missiles. It was basically 1950's technology and could climb faster than any other aircraft of its day, right up to 85,000 feet.
Don't forget its Red Top and Firestreak are subsonic missile, it can't even catch up a B-57 800m away if fired when both aircraft at 400km/h, if B-57 decided to do an non-defending dive.
way to fix this, increase the ceiling on warthunder games map height, introduce proper high altitude bombers. also the lightning could climb straight up with its afterburner. highest climbing plane to ever exist even now. reading up about it, at low level altitude the acceleration should be very similar if not slightly faster than the f104 starfighter.
As a "Selling point" I believe Gajin will be adding the SEPECAT Jaguar, Panvia Tornado, and some form of the Harrier before they touch the Eurofighter Typhoon and the patch will be called Tornado season :-)
Zetaris made a video stating that it's actually overperforming in more areas than it's underperforming, but this can probably be said for most planes. It underperforms with turning and speed acceleration at low altitudes if I am correct.
The asymmetcial look of the afterburner flames is because the engines are off-set. The top one is further ahead than the bottom one. You can see this on the x-ray view in the hangar.
I worked on various aspects of the EE Lightning, cant expand further as i'm bound by the official secrets act. They were designed for short range intercept missions to take out Russian Supersonic Bombers.
I know this may sound dumb but I like how it’s name being the Lightning with how you should play this aircraft. You climb and build up your strategy and then strike from the clouds like a bolt of lightning carrying a payload of missiles. That just me trying to be stupidly poetic I guess.
The fact that it can be out-climbed and out-accelerated by the MiG-21 at high altitude is a joke... The Lightning was the only aircraft to catch up with AND overtake Concorde while it was going mach 2.04... F-15s, F-16s, F-14s, Mirages and F-104s all attempted the same thing and failed... It also had a lower wing load than the Phantom, so should be able to out-turn it at subsonic speeds...
Time flies fast. You'd be surprised. And it would probably be sooner than that. More like in 3 years for *late* F-16 variants and 4 years for F-22 Raptor.
Lot's of people saying the lightning is missing some speed here or there, but the main issue is timing and compression. The reason the lightning gained such a reputation was because it's a jet designed in the 50's and was revolutionary in many aspects, breaking a lot of records and incorporating a lot of groundbreaking designs and technology, still out performing most jet's in raw power well into it's old age. Gaijin could have handled the British top tier jet's much better if they focused more on keeping balance top tier and less on greed. Of course other nations should have had jet's added at points (still a disgrace that some nations don't have mach), but in terms of Britain, i'd have gone as followed: -Lightning P1A which was a prototype, didn't have near as much power to weight, was only mach 1 and only had twin ADEN should have been added with the origional mach 1 jet's. -The SEPECAT Jaguar should have been added (for Britain and France) to round out ground strike capability. -Then the Lightning f6 should have been added with the origional Phantoms. With the Phantoms having better top end speed at altitudes that most games take place, and access to much more armament, but the lightning having the edge with acceleration, turning and missiles that are more deadly if radar lock is achieved, but limited to 2, it would be a much more even fight. -Then finally the FGR, which still out accelerates and climbs the Phantom e's, and has flares, but less armament and worse turning should have been added the patch just gone. -As premiums, the Hunter FGA9 was a good choice, no complaints there, they could also add the Lightning P1B at some point as a premium, which was the last prototype that improved on the P1A by adding in better engines, a radar and a ventral pack that could either fit two more cannon, two retractable rocket packs or two Firestreak missiles. And if they're feeling generous in the future and want to add something paper, they could add the variable sweep wing Sea lightning... I can dream. That way, instead of leapfrogging nations between who's better, and disappointing everyone when the most highly anticipated jet for their nation under performs, Britain would have remained balanced, but with their own play style, and the lightning would have had a chance to shine at the things it was known for.
Yes the lightening may have a better sustained turn rate due to massive energy loss when turning however, the F4 has a way better first turn at 800kmh+ and in jet combat apart from the draken sustained turn fighting means absolutely nothing
I feel like it acts like its name suggests. It comes soaring out of the clouds and strikes its enemies down like a bolt of lightning with the speed to match. So fast that your prey is unable to react.

After some research I've found the reason the Electric Lightning turns so slow. This is due to the fact that the Lightning was simply not designed for fighter to fighter combat it was a design to counter the suspected Soviet supersonic nuclear bombers during the cold war these are the reasons it climbs so well (to reach bombing altitude) and so fast but turns slowly and is slow at low altitude as it is only real designed for high altitude combat. It apparently serve well as a ground strike fighter though being capable of these "boom and zoom tactics" using it's combination of high speed and fast rate of climb to make it difficult to target.
This aircraft was able to take off and then climb straight up to just outside the earths atmosphere. The aircraft is still flying in south Africa and you can if u have the money take a trip in one. This was designed to intercept Russian bombers which could fly higher than fighters of this period.
The problem is that the lighting was an interceptor not a fighter. It main roll was for intercept incoming USSR planes at high altitude. Not low level dog fighting like you see in WT.
BAC Lightning is sorta an example of why there have been basically no gun kills of fixed wing aircraft by another fixed wing aircraft since the end of Vietnam. Planes are too fast and have missiles that can hit from so far away that guns are practically useless for air to air combat.
The real lighting was capable of from takeoff to 50,000 feet without leaving the length of the runway. When introduced into service it was the only aircraft that could constantly climb in the verticals. Today the F15 can do as well not sure about any other aircraft.
The thing is, boom and zoom doesn't work in top tier jets because even if someone is slower than you, if you burn too much energy zooming back up, people can just nose up and fire a missile and you don't have the energy to dodge it.

@Dorian Ferguson overperforming at high alt and underperforming at low alt specifically (in terms of speed and climb). Turn rate is overall pretty damn accurate.
@Dorian Ferguson A bit of an obtuse point Dorian. It "overperforms" in the high altitude area that literally nobody uses because the maps are FAR too small for top tiers.
At low altitude, it's underperforming by something like 20% off its IRL counterpart.

The reason why the Lighting sucks in Wt is the same reasons why RB EC failed, people are just not patient enough to play it properly
are you seriously surprised that a plane made to intercept and engage at high altitudes sucks at low altitudes?
you can say that it still sucks on high altitude combat, and yeah of course, if most rb maps it fights are the size of a peanut, you just simply don't have the space to engage the enemy and disengage using your Superior speed and acceleration to lose the foe and relocate to re engage, an EC map or even maybe the british channel map wouldn't be big enough for these Craft and given how fast they can fly
forget hyping planes like the Tomcat or any Future high altitude interceptor in this game, because the only planes that will always fit the meta are the ones that are decent enough at low altitude battles as the playerbase push for shorter and faster matches
This is a citation from Wikipedia:
In 1984, during a NATO exercise, Flt Lt Mike Hale intercepted a U-2 at a height which they had previously considered safe (thought to be 66,000 feet (20,000 m)).
8:24 I think it might be because the bottom engine is placed farther back than the top engine.

A way to try and overcome flares is by locking on planes on the radar, cause the missiles are controlled by the radar and IR signature.
Yes but, certainly I'm not the only person who has issues picking on with plane radar
The radar merely "slaves" the seeker head. It isn't really an IRCM alternative. But it sure does make for some nice shots on prop climbers or weird angle shots
Great if the radar ever worked when you needed it.
@@piscessoedroen it's like missiles, they always seem to prioritise locking on to allies. Even if the enemy is closer
They'd rather spend money on dancing exotic girls to promote the broken shit game instead of using said money to fix and change it for the better.

Hence the name "Lightning" it's supposed to come from the clouds and strike on a targets :)
Leandis Floyd or it’s meant to intercept Russia’s nuclear bombers and goals fast as “lightning” it wasn’t meant to engage or fighters, it’s an interceptor
i think they muddled the afterburner, here's why:
The lightning's top engine is further back than the bottom, so the afterburner on the top should be longer and the bottom shorter, but its the opposite.
I played this game for 5 years and im still waiting for the sturmtiger

This aircraft was designed to get as high as possible as fast as possible to launch its missiles against incoming bombers. Nothing else. It was essentially a missile for carrying and launching missiles. It was basically 1950's technology and could climb faster than any other aircraft of its day, right up to 85,000 feet.

BnZ doenst exist at this high of BR, missiles and other planes with burners completely negate what ever potential energy you have
way to fix this, increase the ceiling on warthunder games map height, introduce proper high altitude bombers.
also the lightning could climb straight up with its afterburner. highest climbing plane to ever exist even now.
reading up about it, at low level altitude the acceleration should be very similar if not slightly faster than the f104 starfighter.
Phly perfectly summed up British vehicles in once sentence "it just doesn't fit the meta"

This is a lazy model. One big give away is the 'take off flaps'. Lightning flaps were either up or down. No in between.

You can display IAS AND TAS at the same time
The fact that it can be out-climbed and out-accelerated by the MiG-21 at high altitude is a joke...

Of course other nations should have had jet's added at points (still a disgrace that some nations don't have mach), but in terms of Britain, i'd have gone as followed:
-Lightning P1A which was a prototype, didn't have near as much power to weight, was only mach 1 and only had twin ADEN should have been added with the origional mach 1 jet's.
Hey phly the lightning actually has a better turn rate than the f4
not 1000khm a plus
Yes the lightening may have a better sustained turn rate due to massive energy loss when turning however, the F4 has a way better first turn at 800kmh+ and in jet combat apart from the draken sustained turn fighting means absolutely nothing
My gran's mobility scooter has a better turn rate than the F-4.
Unnamed probably would yeah

It's also because the flight model is wrong for altitudes below 5k
Play the ASU-57 and ASU-85's dad, The SU-122-54.

Attempt #49
This aircraft was able to take off and then climb straight up to just outside the earths atmosphere.
The aircraft is still flying in south Africa and you can if u have the money take a trip in one. This was designed to intercept Russian bombers which could fly higher than fighters of this period.
this thing was made in the 50s right so the fact it can fight against late 20th century vic's is a testament to how good it is
Doesn't help that the Lightning is directly competing with aircraft 10-15 years younger than it like the F4 FGR and EJ or MiG-21 SMT
The AB difference is due to the Engines are not level with each other and the upper one sits in front of the lower one.
The real lighting was capable of from takeoff to 50,000 feet without leaving the length of the runway. When introduced into service it was the only aircraft that could constantly climb in the verticals. Today the F15 can do as well not sure about any other aircraft.
Such an unfortunate situation for Britain's first homegrown supersonic aircraft. Loved that first missile kill, though!
The thing is, boom and zoom doesn't work in top tier jets because even if someone is slower than you, if you burn too much energy zooming back up, people can just nose up and fire a missile and you don't have the energy to dodge it.
